ABOUT TIFR• The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) is a research

institution in Mumbai, India, dedicated to basic research in mathematics and the sciences.

• It is a Deemed University and works under the umbrella of the Department of Atomic Energy of the Government of India. It is located at Navy Nagar, Colaba, Mumbai.

• TIFR conducts research primarily in natural sciences, mathematics, biological sciences and theoretical computer science and is considered one of the outstanding research centres in India.

• TIFR has a graduate program leading to a PhD in all the major fields of study.

Introduction • The Indian Institute of Management (Indian Institute of Management) was one of the few

commissions that Kahn made outside the United States. It began in 1962 and that same year the architect was commissioned to another important work in Dhaka, the National Assembly of Bangladesh.

• Completing the project took more than a decade, but Kahn in his last trip to India in 1974, before his death to return to the U.S., could see most of the finished building your project.

• The commission initially offered to architect Bal Krishna Doshi, but he had met Kahn in Philadelphia and was aware of the importance of their work and the importance that the new project would have on both Kahn and for India, recommended that be given the new project to American architect.

Location

• It was built in an isolated rural area many miles away from the first point urbanized city of Ahmedabad, one of the most populous in India, in Gujarat state, west of the country and bordering with Pakistan to the northwest.

• Kahn conceived the Indian Institute of Managemnent as a mixture of austerity and majesty, including spaces for informal interaction and achieving a balance between modernism and tradition, which captured the timeless spirit of India.

Construction Details

Walls diagonalThese have been used as a unifying element between the different formal types of

buildings. Have been used subtly in the four corners of the school building and is the main organizing principle within the school buildings, residence and staff accommodation and service.

FeaturesDistinctive features of these buildings include the many square arches and brick structures on the walls with carved circles.

The library

• The library building is five storied structure with rectangular plan. • It is approached by a broad, imposing flight of steps from the parking lot. • The design has been conceived to entail movement from the active spaces to most private and quite carrels at the farthest reaches.

Materials• Building materials brick has been used as

primary building material for the entire complex walls, columns. Brick arches have been used for wide spans.

• Use of concrete has been restricted to foundations, floor slabs, and ties for arched openings.
