Use the MARS model of individual behavior and performance to diagnose the possible causes of the unacceptable behavior?

1. Motivation

- Low motivation from the officers. Usually, people will become motivated when they receives incentives, bonus or some credits. Employee (officers) will feel appreciated if their superior (captain) give some credits to them. We also believe that an employee who feels appreciated will perform more than their superior is expected.

2. Ability

- the police officers prefer the field word and trying to get away as much as possible from the office work. Their passion for the field work can be concluded where they have courage, enthusiasm and strength. They do not prefer doing the office work because it needs patience and diligence.

3. Role Perception

- The officers did not understand their job scope and did not know how to prioritize their work effectively. They only know how to apprehend the criminals, but they hate to do the paperwork.

4. Situational Factors

- Lack of financial resources (budget) to cater police officer's training on the report writing skills. They also might not have enough time or appropriate tool to facilitate in report writing. e.g: only one computer for the entire station which may cause delay in delivering the paperwork.

Has the captain considered all possible solutions to the problems? If not, what else might be done?

i. Set KPI (goals) for officers which they have to achieve.

ii. The captain itself has to show a good example to the officers,

engage or build a good relationship with them so that the officers

will feel appreciated.

iii. Divide the work in the form of shifts. (e.g. individual exchanged

periodically between field word and office work)

iv. Employ those who are enjoying the required office work

v. Give penalty for each report done inadequately or incorrect, (eg: they are

prevented to go on street and have to work in the station or reduce the

wages)
