Locomotive bogies for GE Transportation Special challenge – 3-axle locomotive bogie In December 2010, Molinari was awarded the contract for developing a concept for mod- ular bogies on the basis of the previously engi- neered bogie for UK. Following a positive assessment of the con- cept by GE Transportation, Molinari was also commissioned with the detailed design. Molinari was responsible for: • Detailed assessment of requirements from European standards • Configuration of coupling elements according to the requirements of dynamic behavior • Definition of the interface with the locomotive’s underframe • Dynamic behavior simulation • FEM stability calculation • Detailed design except for wheel sets and traction motors • Supply of welded bogie frames • Static and fatigue limit testing on one bogie frame • Support for tests on finished locomotives Technical data for locomotive • GE Type PH37ACai «PowerHaul» • Axle sequence: Co’Co‘ • Capacity: 2750 kW • Max. speed: 120 km/h • Starting tractive effort: 540 kN • Weight: 120 - 132 t • Axle load: 20 - 22 t Special requirements • Weight savings • Lower production costs • Better negotiation of curves • Easy adaptation to different track widths and axle distances • Possible enhancement for higher speeds • Compliance with TSI and corre- sponding standards (EN and UIC) • Reduction of shear forces through hydraulic cross coupling Molinari Rail AG Merkurstrasse 25 8400 Winterthur · Switzerland Phone +41 52 320 60 60 Fax +41 52 320 60 61 [email protected] Successful implementation of specifications The 3-axle bogie designed by Molinari comply with all contractual and regulatory require- ments. The locomotives are approved in the respective country of destination. Compliance with the various national regula- tions and the installation of antennae and sensor for the various train protection sys- tems represents a particular challenge. In addition, maximum shear force is reduced to less than 60 kN through the installation of a hydraulic cross coupling. Molinari Rail delivers the installation-ready bogie frames as well as the crash compo- nents to GE. CASE HISTORY 03.2019/250 www.molinari-rail.com Technology · Manufacturing · Projects
