not only about the repurposing of materials, but also about our ecological relationship to everything on this planet, ten assemblage artists were invited to
participate in the Art From Scrap Gallery exhibit, The New Oceanscapes. The invitational art exhibit will open with an artist reception and Hollister Awards presentation on Friday, November 16th, from 6 to 8pm.
“Chris Silva who curated the show with me described it as a collection of work that challenges our understanding of what it means to be environmentally aware. In the show there is humor, darkness, play, criticality, and spirituality all working towards the same visual understanding,” shared Ashley Woods Hollister, President of the Board, Explore Ecology and Co-Curator. “After viewing the show I want people to take with them a heightened consciousness of how our current actions influence our future.”
The exhibit, juried by Charles Donelan of the Santa Barbara Independent, Kip Fulbeck of UCSB, and Nathan Hayden of Santa Barbara City College features 32 works by the following artists: Bessie Kunath, Rimas Simaitis, Tim Brown, Sommer Sheffield, Chris Silva, Ryan Bulis, Jack Fulton, Karen Lehrer, Kit Rosenberg and Erick Andino.
Celebrated assemblage artists Joe Shea, Dug Uyesaka, and Jeanine Brinkman redesigned the Hollister Family Awards. The awards will be unveiled the day of the reception and awarded to three of the ten artists.

at 855 at the Arts Center will stimulate your mind and get you into the holiday spirit. A Study in Color will open at the center on Saturday, November
17th, from 2 to 4pm. The show was juried by Thomas Van Stein and will be on view through January 6th.
Van Stein is an accomplished plein air painter who has been painting for 25 years. His work has been shown in California, New York, and South Carolina. One of the places he trained was The Pasadena Art Center School of Design.
who artistically capture everyday moments on canvas were invited to show their work in the Waterhouse Gallery’s annual
exhibition, The Great American Figurative Show. An opening reception is planned for Saturday, November 17th, from 4 to 7:30pm. An artist demonstration will take place from 1 to 4pm.
“The works in this show are done by leading Figurative artists in the U.S.,” shared Diane Waterhouse, co-owner of Waterhouse Gallery. “I find Figurative paintings compelling, interesting, and unique. Every collector buys landscapes and still lifes when they first start collecting.”
The Figurative Show dates back to 2006, when Diane and Ralph Waterhouse set out to bring more figurative painting to the Santa Barbara art scene. This year’s invitation-only
exhibit features 55 artists from all over the country. Some of the featured Santa Barbara artists include: Ray Hunter, Mary Carol Kenney, and James Taylor Gray, a talented young newcomer.
“People love the variety. When we say Figurative we don’t mean nudes. We mean ‘conversational figurative’ - people doing things i.e. drinking coffee, shopping, having conversations, going to museums, having dinner,” shared Waterhouse.
The Waterhouse Gallery starts planning the show in July because national art magazines work two months ahead. The annual show provides an opportunity for the artists to meet each other, network, and paint in the La Arcada
Courtyard. This month the gallery celebrates 28 years with 22 years in La Arcada. “For 28 years, we have always chosen works that we love and would personally love to own,” noted Waterhouse. “This show is a visual feast and a joy for me. I look forward to it every year.”

Santa Barbara Strings will present its Winter Concert on Sunday, December 9th at 6 pm at First Presbyterian Church, 21 E. Constance Ave. Santa Barbara Strings is a non-profit premier music education program for youth aged 4 to 19. Participants include 55 children from 26 schools who study the string orchestra repertoire following the natural progression of music history from the Renaissance/Baroque Period to the Modern Period. There are three orchestra levels and seven chamber music ensembles aimed towards creating the next generation of classical musicians. For info visit www.santabarbarastrings.org
ICAN was founded in 2005 by a group of individuals who believe that all young people should have access to quality arts learning opportunities. The organization’s mission is to bring high quality arts programs to children in Santa Barbara County, particularly those least likely to receive them. ICAN has instituted a Visual Arts Program in five Title 1 schools throughout Santa Barbara. The ICAN music program at Franklin Elementary School is inspired by Venezuela’s el Sistema model through which Gustavo Dudamel, conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, received his early music education. Through sustained creative learning opportunities, ICAN seeks to effect positive change in the community. The ICAN after-school Music Program was started in 2011.
