Academic achievement has always been vital. But, in today’s changing economy the need for advanced skills and technical knowledge is growing. Showing our children that we value learning and education is important and will pay off in the long run as they mature. When parents are involved in their children's educations, student achievement improves. A very good way to show our kids we value learning and education is by joining the PTSA. We encourage parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, students and anyone who supports education to join. The membership is $6.00 per person. Please contact Jennifer Brock or Kimberly Collins for more information. Carver PTSA is also committed to helping our students acquire advanced skills and technical knowledge. We plan to enhance classroom technology through the funds raised at the upcoming adult fundraiser in November: Jazz & Jeans. Please plan to attend; if you cannot attend, please plan to help in some way, either through a donation of your time, money or talent. Contact Beth Delancy and/or Karen Bruns for more information. Have your students come out to support the football team and the 8

th grade by attending the Homecoming

Dance on October 12th. Also, mark your calendars for our 2

nd Carver Cleanup Day on October 27

th. This

month’s originally scheduled PTSA meeting is moved to November 8th, please plan to attend.

As always, feel free to contact me or any other PTSA board member with questions, comments, concerns. Thank you for your support. Shelley Cooper [email protected]

Carver 8th graders will begin their first interdisciplinary unit on October 1. Each core subject (American History,

Math, Science, and Language Arts) will work on a component of the project, and students will learn background and process information in the classrooms. All students will maintain a journal during the 2 weeks of the S.S. Wildcat unit. This journal must be turned in at the end of the unit, and represents a major portion of the grade for the first quarter. In addition to classroom lessons, 8

th grade students will work together in teams of 3 to construct a boat! Each

team will be given a large sheet of corrugated cardboard to use in building their boat. The only other item students are permitted is duct tape – and students are allowed to use as much duct tape as they wish. Parents, don't be surprised when your child comes home asking to make a trip to Home Depot or Wal-Mart to purchase duct tape! The S.S. Wildcat unit culminates with a trip to Booker T. Washington High School on Friday, October 12, where each team will launch their boat – with one team member paddling – in an attempt to race the length of the swimming pool. It's always a fun day, with competition, effort, and a lot of laughter.

Eighth grade students and teachers need parent volunteers to help in the construction of their boats. We need 8–10 parents on the morning of Wednesday, October 10 to help cut cardboard. If you are available to work with us, please contact Ms. Pam Ashford at [email protected]

S.S. Wildcat is an amazing cooperative activity, and we hope you will support and encourage your student to do his or her best. Information regarding dress and lunch on "launch day" will be sent home as we get closer to October 12.

th, the drama department from the University of Tulsa will be presenting a special

performance of their play, “Little Shop of Horrors” to the 7th grade class. We are really excited and honored

that TU is coming to Carver. SHELTER BUILDING PROJECT The seventh grade Shelter Building Project will begin October 15, 2012. Students are (or will be) reading the fictional adventure novel Hatchet, which is about a boy who has to survive in the wilderness until he is rescued. Throughout the novel, the boy has to use many life skills, like perseverance and problem solving. To create a similar experience, students will work in groups to build a freestanding, waterproof shelter in which one student can fit. A major part of this project requires each student to collect the following items to be used to build the shelter: sticks, leaves, grass, etc., (no bought or manufactured materials). Students will soon receive detailed instructions about this project. Please begin helping your child gather the above items. The seventh grade teachers invite parents to Carver on the last day of the project (Wednesday, October 17

th)

to eat lunch with your child and view the water testing to determine if shelters are waterproof.

October is recognized as Anti-Bullying Month. Carver Middle School invites you to join with us in

enhancing our theme of kindness and mutual respect within our entire school community and thus providing a high-quality, safe learning environment for all students. One of our goals every school year is to sustain a caring community where everyone feels safe and has a sense of belonging. To facilitate this effort, we practice a school-wide safety program called Bully-Proofing Your School. We will also be hosting two speakers to discuss issues surrounding bullying. Mr. Steve Hahn will discuss cyber bullying with each grade level, during AOI forums, at

the end of October. Mr. Kirk Smalley will be visiting Carver in early November to present his nationally recognized program called Stand for the Silent. As we get closer to Mr. Smalley’s

assembly we will be sending out emails and sending information home with all students. This program is most effective when the parental community, administration, staff, and students all have a shared belief that kindness and respect for each other is of great value in our school and contributes to a positive environment for better academic performance. With the Bully-Proofing program, bullying and aggressive behaviors do not have a place at our school and will

not be tolerated. A large number of our faculty members have attended training sessions and are working to adapt the Bully-Proofing program to our school’s specific needs. However, recent

budget cuts have hampered our effort to train the remainder of our faculty in this program. As a result, we are asking that, as parents in the Carver Middle School Community, you discuss The Bullying Circle and the components of bullying with your child since your support is critical to its success. If you feel that your child is being bullied, is the bully, or is a bystander, please do not hesitate to contact any member of the administrative staff so that we may effectively address the issue. Your input is not only welcomed, but necessary for the continued success of the Carver Community. Sincerely, Valarie Farrow
