Technically, the rules governing the sport have not changed that dramatically. One element that has dramatically changed the look of the cars for this year is surrounding the front of the cars. The rules state that the height of the front nose has to be 550mm above the floor of the car. This was for safety reasons, to help prevent driver injury from a ‘T-bone’ collision (where the front nose hits the side of another, perhaps at a tight corner). The teams were also asked to reduce the height of their car’s chassis, which was rejected – so instead, the FIA allowed the teams to have a step of 150mm from the chassis to the nose section. This resulted in the majority of teams going for a strange looking ‘platypus’ or ‘stepped’ nose shape. Mclaren had already made steps to reduce the height of their chassis – hence why no such stepped-nose appears on their car.
Another area that has helped to even the field out for this year, surrounds the development of the area of the car where the exhaust gases leave. In 2011, some constructors built their F1 cars in such a way which that it maximised the downforce levels at the rear of the car through the use of what became known as blown-diffusers – the exhaust gases were being channelled in such a way that extra downforce was made available – effectively improving the handling and giving extra grip – something that the Red Bull team excelled in, and Sebastian Vettel used to dramatic effect to trounce the opposition to win last year’s driver title. There were also major advantages during the ‘off-throttle’ stages of cornering where the exhausts were continuing to create downforce when cars were in their slowing-down stages. The governing body, the FIA, were getting concerned about money going into technology that effectively wastes fuel when cars are slowing down for corners. So for 2012, blown-diffusers are now banned.
However, the key for the formula 1 drivers and teams to make the most of the 2012 season, would appear to be how to get the best out of the current range of Pirelli tyres. Last year, Pirelli took over from Bridgestone as the sole supplier of formula 1 tyres. There is a range of tyre compounds that are taken to each grand prix weekend, and Pirelli will dictate which two dry-weather compounds will be used for a race weekend along with standard full-wet and intermediate-wet tyres.
F1Anyone who has not been following Formula 1 since the season started in March, who happened to take a glance at the current Formula 1 drivers standings after the fifth round of the championship might assume that things haven’t changed too much, with the Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel leading the way again this year. However, nothing is a simple as this, and the casual observer with this kind of thought couldn’t be further from the truth! This year is proving to be one of the most intriguing seasons for an extremely long time, as it happens to be one of the most open championships in years – for the first time ever, we have had 5 different drivers winning the first 5 races, all from 5 different car constructors!
The winners so far:Melbourne, Australia – winner: Jenson Button (Vodafone Mclaren Mercedes)Sepang, Malaysia-winner: Fernando Alonso (Scuderia Ferrari)Shanghai, China-winner: Nico Rosberg (Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team)Bahrain-winner: Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull Racing)Barcelona, Spain-winner: Pastor Maldonado (Williams F1 Team)

The 2012 Season is proving to be an unpredictable one!
So what is making the 2012 season different from 2011?
menandautotrader.com june 2012
Teams and drivers are restricted to the numbers of sets they can use at different points during the race weekend, and seven sets of tyres are available for use for both qualifying and the race. During qualifying, the drivers who get through to the final part of qualifying, have to start on the set of tyres they qualified on, so straight away, tyre choice is essential.
For 2012, Pirelli wanted the spectacle of 2011’s racing to remain for this year – so tyres were again produced in a way that would allow the tyres to degrade over a number of laps, meaning teams would take on different strategies for different drivers. Take the Barcelona race as an example – for the two Mclaren drivers; Lewis Hamilton, due to his qualifying penalty of failing to have enough fuel to complete his final qualifying in-lap, he was relegated to the back of the grid for the start of the race. Mclaren chose a 2-stop strategy for Lewis, while his team-mate, Jenson Button was on a 3-stop strategy from 10th on the grid. At the end of the race, Lewis finished in 8th place, 7 seconds ahead of Jenson in 9th.
It would appear that different cars react differently on different tyres at different tracks at different temperatures. This helps to explain why the Mercedes team did so well in the Chinese race – the tyres were working at the optimum temperature range for Mercedes to operate in, which lead to both Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher taking the front row grid positions in qualifying, and also lead to the team’s first win in it’s current guise, with Nico Rosberg achieving his first win in F1 after 111 times of asking.
It would also appear, the phoenix that is the Williams team (who had their worst ever season last year) also hit the sweet spot with their tyre management at Barcelona with their Venezuelan driver Pastor Maldonado getting
his maiden win, and Williams getting their first win since fellow South American Juan-Pablo Montoya won for the team back in 2004 in Brazil. Unfortunately for Williams, the Phoenix juxtaposition went a little too far, when their garage went up in flames 90 minutes after their driver won in Barcelona – perhaps showing another dangerous side to the sport which hadn’t shown it’s face until now. Mechanics were injured during this event, and I’m sure all aspects of team safety will be reviewed after this incident.
What else do we need to look out for in 2012? There are one or two team names that have changed since last year. The main one, which will cause confusion for some, is the Lotus team. This is the Enstone (Oxfordshire) based team that for the last decade were known as the Renault team. A court ruling has allowed them to use the Lotus brand, and the FIA have allowed the name change to Lotus F1 team. This same ruling also meant that the Malaysian owned team formerly known as Team Lotus, is now known as Caterham F1 Team, after the owner, Tony Fernandez bought the British sportscar manufacturer Caterham. All of this has meant that for the first time in over 30 years, 2 cars with Lotus branding appeared on the podium for the Bahrain race, with Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean getting second and third places respectively.
Speaking of Kimi Raikkonen, he is one of six former world champions on the formula 1 grid this year – the first time that we have had this number of world champions appearing in one season, the others drivers being Sebastian Vettel, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and the 7-times world champion Michael Schumacher. Half of these drivers have won races this year already, and given how open this year’s championship is, there is no reason why the others can’t also take at least one win this year, given the form of

nethe constructors they drive for. There is some doubt surrounding Michael Schumacher though, with one senior Mercedes official even go so far as to say his performances this year as being ‘mediocre’ – this was even before the incident in Barcelona where Schumacher ran into the back of the Williams driver, Bruno Senna.
French drivers in F1 arrive like London buses! There’s been none around for ages, and then all of a sudden, three arrive at once! One of these – Romain Grosjean, did have a brief spell with the Renault team back in 2009, when he stepped in to replace Nelson Piquet-Jnr after the controversial ‘crash-gate’ saga surrounding the team (when Nelson was found to have been party to deliberately crashing his car in Singapore as means of helping his team-mate Alonso to win). Grosjean was thrown in at the deep-end on that occasion, and this time around, he has had more experience and in fact won last year’s GP2 championship. With Grosjean getting 3rd place on the grid on his return to F1 in Australia, and already gaining a podium in Bahrain, he is certainly one to watch. The other two Frenchmen are rookies to the sport. So far Jean Eric-Vergne, who drives for Toro Rosso has four points in the championship, and Charles Pic, who drives for Marussia (who as a team have not taken any points since their entry for F1) will use 2012 as a means of finding their feet in the sport.
Of the other teams and drivers on the grid, progress has also been evident with the Mexican driver Sergio Perez, giving Sauber their biggest result since the team broke away from the BMW manufacturer. Sergio narrowly missed out on a win in Malaysia, instead having to finish behind the more experienced Alonso after a rain-soaked race. With Felipe Massa underperforming this year as Alonso’s team-mate, many rate Sergio as the next Ferrari driver-in-waiting. However, the 3-times world champion Sir Jackie Stewart has been openly praising his fellow Scot; the Force India driver Paul Di Resta, and predicts that Paul would be a great contender to partner Alonso at Ferrari. This follows Paul’s drive to 6th in the Bahrain Grand Prix, where Paul finished above both the Ferrari drivers and also ahead of Hamilton, Button, Perez and Schumacher in the race.
There is also no reason why we can’t see Mark Webber winning again, in a Red Bull that is competitive, but certainly without the armoury that took Vettel to the previous two championships. Some may even see this RB8 car as one which is more suited to Webber’s style of driving, which has resulted in four consecutive fourth place positions in the first four races.
For Mclaren to make the most of 2012, the team need to eradicate some of the errors that have cost the team lots of points already this year. Lewis Hamilton took provisional pole at Barcelona, and what would have been McLaren’s 150th pole position – however, a team error lead to a lack of fuel for qualifying, resulting in a penalty pushing him to the back of the grid. Then in the race, during Hamilton’s pit stop, the left rear tyre that had been removed actually got in the way of Hamilton’s exit, leading to a slightly bumpy exit and lost time. In Bahrain, Hamilton suffered twice from extra-long pits stops due to problems fitting the left rear tyre. This was also a problem for one of Button’s stops in China. Without such problems, it’s fair to say that Hamilton should really be leading the championship.
Of the newer teams that joined the F1 circuit back in 2010, all three have still much progress to make, with Caterham seemingly having the biggest pressure given the drivers and people behind the team. Heikki Kovalainen and Vitaly Petrov are proven drivers, and given the right equipment, I’m sure we should see them in the points at some point – whether it’s this year, who knows? Marussia is the team that first entered as Virgin Racing back in 2010, renamed Marussia after the Russian car manufacturer took a controlling stake in the F1 team. Both Marussia and HRT seemingly have an uphill struggle to get their driver’s cars further up the Grand Prix pecking order.
So the 2012 F1 race results are in fact a great indication that this year is proving to be the opposite of last year in terms of predictability. Some observers were half expecting a second wave of German driver domination with Vettel, like we had this time a decade ago with Schumacher. However, if Vettel is to become one of the few 3-times back-to-back championship winners, then he certainly has his work cut out for him this year.

Línea Directa reportsHOW TO COMPLETE AN ACCIDENT REPORT FORM • This document is essential for determining who is responsible for a traffic accident, which has a direct effect
on the price that customers pay when renewing their insurance.
What is an accident report form?An accident report form is a document which outlines the circumstances which have occurred in a car accident. In addition to the personal details of the drivers and their vehicles, the document includes a jointly agreed description of the manoeuvres carried out by the drivers when the accident took place, which plays a key role in determining who is responsible for a traffic accident.
How should it be completed?Línea Directa offers the following advice to complete the form:1. Columns A and B (blue and yellow), are for the personal details of the drivers and their vehicles.2. In section 12, (Circumstances) the numbered column on the left describes the manoeuvres of car A and the one
on the right those of car B. If you are unsure which box to mark, leave it blank. Make a drawing of the accident in section 13 indicating the manoeuvre of each car.
3. If anybody has been injured or if you think they might have been injured, complete section 24.4. If there is more than one car involved in the accident, also complete section 23, on the reverse side of the form,
and include it in the sketch.5. Sign the form and keep a copy.

Why would I want one?Like for like, the Audi A4 tends to undercut premium rivals like the BMW 3 Series on price. Equipment levels are good too, as even the standard version comes with alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel and air-conditioning. Spend a little extra on SE specification, and the equipment list comes up to the level you would want to expect on an executive car.
The A4 accommodates four passengers and luggage better than most of the cars in its class. There’s plenty of headroom throughout and rear legroom is particularly generous. The boot is larger than those in both the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes C-Class.

About the carWhile the latest Mercedes may have two road-going personalities, it’s got one specific aim in mind: to topple the BMW 3-Series from the number one spot in the sales charts. For the first time, the C-Class will be offered in a choice of looks, providing buyers with completely individual driving experiences. Broadening the model’s appeal, the racier Sport will appeal to younger buyers, while the comfort-oriented SE and Elegance versions aim to keep traditional customers happy. The sport-spec model has a more aggressive front end than the Elegance, and gets a three-bar chrome grille with the famous three-pointed star in the centre, as well as a rather subtle AMG-styled body-kit. On top of the sharp evolution the C-Class has made from the previous model, these touches ensure it looks the part.

How does it drive?Under its stylish skin, the C-Class retains its traditional front-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout, and every variant now gets adaptive dampers all-round. Sport versions come with an Advanced Agility package, which, at the touch of a button, sharpens the damping control and steering feel, as well as throttle response. The add-on includes lowered suspension. The results are impressive. Overall, the C-Class feels secure through fast corners and offers loads of agility. In fact, only an over-light steering set-up really holds it back from bettering the 3-Series. However, the best news is that, while in normal mode, the new dampers provide a brilliant ride, which soaks up bumps and enables the car to float over them with ease.
