Guiding Principles We – Collectively – are Brilliant & Can find an

Innovative Path and Create Brighter Futures

We must Think, Live and Act from a place of Abundance – We Have enough time, money, resources…

We Must Focus on Abilities!

Why Reuse AT?Assistive Technology (AT) reutilization

is a concept that was born out of need.

From local grassroots efforts, it has grown to become a nationally recognized response to providing AT to those people who would otherwise “go without”.

Page 6: Carolyn P. Phillips M.Ed, ATP Georgia Department of Labor Pass It On Center phone: 404-638-0384 email: carolynpphillips@mindspring.com .

Why Reuse AT?• The benefits in the lives of people able to finally tap

the potential of AT far outweighs whatever costs we have born in developing Georgia’s ReBoot program, Friends of Disabled Adults and Children, too! (FODAC), and G-Trade.

• We have, however, also experienced the incredible frustration of knowing that our efforts have been limited due to the lack of resources.

Durable Medical Equipment

FODAC provides wheelchairs, scooters, bathroom aids, hospital beds, walkers, quad canes, and a host of other items such as standers, corner chairs and numerous other therapeutic aids.

FODAC has collection sites around Atlanta andnearby cities that collect used DME. FODAC picksup these donations from local rehab hospitals, DMEcompanies, and homes. Equipment is checked out, cleaned by staff and volunteers, and issued toclients who have no benefits or who have to wait forbenefits from Medicare/Medicaid.

FODAC averages 2000 clients served each year, some with multiple items.

FODAC is unique among non-profit organizations in that the value of services provided to clients greatly exceeds the cost of delivering the services.

Donated equipment is received at no cost. It comes from people who have made progress and don’t need it anymore, outgrew it, got a new one, or died.

The refurbishing process adds value to the equipment and the new family saves the cost of purchasing the items.

The total value of services provided by FODAC since its inception has been over $50,000,000.

The cost of providing these services has been $5,575,036.

That means that for every dollar FODAC has spent, $9.39 in services were provided.

Are you a Connector? The Tipping Point - Gladwell

If Not – meet one! What makes someone a Connector? The

first--and most obvious--criterion is that Connectors know lots of people.

They are the kinds of people who know everyone.

All of us know someone like this. But I don't think that we spend a lot of time

thinking about the importance of these folks.

“Microsoft Teams With Tools for Life to Provide PCs To People With Disabilities”

Innovative Program Gives New Life to Old Computers ATLANTA, April 21, 1999 — As part of its continued effort to make

computer technology accessible to all individuals, Microsoft Corp. is teaming with Tools for Life, a program operated by the Georgia Department of Human Resources, to update and distribute 80 PCs for free to people with disabilities.

Microsoft's contribution to the project includes software valued at $23,000 and a long-term commitment to support Tools for Life's mission of enabling Georgians with disabilities through the use of technology.

"Microsoft is working hard both locally and at the corporate level to extend access and training to people with disabilities," said Marty Paradise, general manager, Southeast District, Microsoft. "A major part of this effort involves supporting the important work of organizations like Tools for Life."

What are Our Outcomes?Who are Our Partners?

Elizabeth Grossman - 5/31/2006 “The Digital Age was expected to usher in an

era of clean production…

Deep within every electronic device lie toxic materials that make up the bits and bytes, a complex thicket of lead, mercury, cadmium, plastics, and a host of other often harmful ingredients.

Americans alone own more than two billion pieces of high tech electronics and discard five to seven million tons each year.

If you sit at a desk in an office, talk to friends on your cell phone, watch television, listen to music on headphones, are a child in Guangdong, or a native of the Arctic, you are part of this story.

The answers lie in changing how we design, manufacture, and dispose of high tech electronics. “
