The one included in this work, perhaps less often encountered, was collected from the village of Helston, in Cornwall. Good People All, This Christmastime The text comes from Country Wexford in Ireland, and is known by many as simply “The Wexford Carol.” The tune that supports it was transcribed by local musician and historian, William H. PROGRAM NOTES
Four treasured carol tunes from Wales, England and Ireland comprise this colorfully scored and emotionally varied medley:
Sougan (pronounced: see-oh-gahn) With a title taken from the Welsh word for ‘lullaby,’ the tune dates from the early 19th century. Astonishingly, its captivating melody uses only the first three notes of the major scale.
I Saw Three Ships Over the years, several tunes have been used to set this delightful carol.
Grattan Flood (1859–1928), and was taken down as performed by folk singer Jack Devereux (1910–1999).
The Seven Joys of Mary This carol and its rollicking tune have been favorites of the English people for well over a century. The source for this use is the Bramley and Stainer “Christmas Carols New and Old” (1871).

NOTES TO THE CONdUCTOR
The form of this work generally follows the plan: slow-fast-slow-fast. The slow ballad sections should be played with long, sustained phrases and quick breaths between. In the quicker sections (starting at measures 20 and 57), care should be taken not to play eighth notes too short. The tonal center and full weight of each note must be present. Keep the tunes prominent by following indicated dynamic levels. Percussion should always be kept in the background, and not be permitted to overpower the wind lines.
