AN INITIATIVE BY

Carnival of the Bold is a festival and movement of social change through the arts. It is a coming together of artists and other leaders who drive important issues of our time - to create deeper engagement around social causes.

It is fi rst and foremost a spirit or philosophy that the arts can be a powerful enabling force for social change. It calls on artists to take leadership. And it calls on the world to participate. We aspire to bring social issues into the mainstream agenda, raise public consciousness and shine new light on what it means to live with greater humanity.

Carnival of the Bold aims to inspire and awaken greater public consciousness. It is interdisciplinary and inclusive of all artists - theatre, music, fi lm, street performance, visual arts, you name it.

Artists bring interesting and unique perspectives to the mix, and engage audiences in new and different ways. They can strongly infl uence the way the world frames or feels about the salient issues.

Through Carnival of the Bold, we aspire to fi nd new ways, new ideas and new narratives that will shape our world and future.

Seven artists lead the ranks on the quest for social change with works that highlight cultural awareness, indigenous rights, sexuality, gender equality, diversity, feminism, youth and marginalised communities.

Carnival of the Bold presents a lineup that will captivate, challenge and inspire you. It celebrates artists who have used their art to enrich our cultural identity, explore shared values, spark imagination and empower communities.

Candy BowersEmcee, Performer & WriterBorn in Victoria and raised in Campbelltown NSW to South African parents, Candy Bowers is an award winning writer, hip hop artist, educator, director, arts worker, theatre maker and social activist.

A strong and passionate maker of political and raw performance, Candy is notorious for disturbing the comfortable and creating work that warms, cuts and tickles in equal parts. She is committed to building social inclusion for people of colour via theatre.

PoeTribe Indigenous Spoken Word ArtistPushing the boundaries of music, performance and poetry, PoeTRIBE is a collaboration between Wiradjuri/Gomeroi poet Lorna Munro and Ngiyaampa violinist Eric Avery. PoeTRIBE amplifi es the importance of relationships, culture, language, law and reconnection.

Brave and unapologetic, their work engages you with sparse musical compositions punctuated with passionate poetry, which condenses the modern Aboriginal experience into short and affecting pieces.

Mayu KanamoriStoryteller & Photographer Mayu Kanamori is a Japanese-Australian artist who works mostly in photography, documentary photography, and still photography video art, often using photographic projection and storytelling with emphasis on performance using interviews and narration.

Her works deal with themes relating to subculture and minority groups, and cross cultural and migrational issues, particularly within Japan and Australia. Her more recent work explores spiritual connections with people and landscapes of both Australia and Japan.

Luka LessonPoet & RapperLuka Lesson is a spoken word and Hip hop artist of Greek heritage. From dense rhyme schemes to a poetic vulnerability, Luka’s musicality is prevalent in everything he does.

Whether holding the focus of thousands of people at music festivals with nothing but his voice, or fl owing on complex beats and electronic production, Luka is a versatile artist whose infl uences are as diverse as his army of faithful followers.

Rani PramestiActor & Theatre makerRani Pramesti is a Chinese-Indonesian actor and performance maker based in Melbourne. She is passionate about producing and making work that engages with cross-racial casting and cross-cultural performance making.

Rani’s most recent project, Chinese Whispers, won Best Live Art Award and Innovation in Culturally Diverse Practice Award at Melbourne Fringe 2014. In 2015, Rani will be working as an Associate Producer at Footscray Community Arts Centre, through the Arts Victoria and Faculty of VCAMCM Professional Pathways Scholarship.

Fadia AbboudArab Australian Fimmaker Fadia Abboud is a fi lmmaker, fi lm festival co-director and community worker. Fadia’s works centers around themes of gender, sexuality, race, Arab heritage, migrant stories and love.

With her work at Information & Cultural Exchange (ICE) she has supported cultural programs using multimedia to empower diverse communities in Western Sydney. Her fi lms include I Remember 1948, Big Trouble Little Fish & I LUV U BUT. Recently, Fadia was an artist on DISCO DOME for Sydney Festival.

Kim ‘Busty Beatz’ BowersSound Artist, Performer & ComposerA musical director, composer, remixer and sound designer, Kim ‘Busty Beatz’ Bowers has been making music and theatre for over 20 years. Kim has performed with the likes of Bone Thugs’ n’ Harmony, Screamfeeder, Def Poetry Jam, Ben Lee, Silverchair and Powderfi nger.

Kim is the Co Artistic Director of Black Honey Company, a production house and cultural consultancy team that collaborates with the Arts, Entertainment and Community sectors to create fearless sticky performance for the International Hip Hop generation.

We need your help to defeat the massive cuts to the Australia CouncilAs you will know by now, Federal Arts Minister George Brandis has taken $104.8 million off the Australia Council, over four years, to start a National Centre for Excellence run by his own offi ce.

This will decimate the Australia Council's discretionary budget, and has threatened the new programs and initiatives that started only this year.

Please write to your local federal MP to tell them how poor this decision is, and how it threatens the fundamental democratic process of arts funding. It doesn't matter what political party they are from, they represent you and your interests.
