Coping with Mondays by deciding not to do them“But whenever Monday comes, you can
find me cryin’ all of the time”– Mama Cass
‘THE DOCTOR wants to see youagain in six months,” the receptionist said. She paged through her appointment book toschedule a time for me, and then announceda date six months down the line.
“What day of the week is that?” I asked.“It’s a Monday,” she replied.“No,” I said. “I don’t make any plans for
Mondays. Mondays are my days for doingnothing.”
She looked at me as if she were a maitred’ and I had just turned down a hard-to-getreservation at a very exclusive restaurant. Then she turned the page, and asked ifTuesday was OK for me.
“What time?” I asked.“9 a.m.”“No, I don’t make any plans before 10.”This time her look said, “don’t you know
people are dying for these appointments?”Fortunately she had an appointment at 11,
so we settled on that. I thought she deservedan explanation. But I didn’t give her one.
However, I wasn’t being obstinate orimpertinent. I was simply following amethod of living I had adopted since retiringmany years ago. You see, all of my life Idreaded Mondays. I either had to go back toschool or back to work on Monday, always at
a very early time in the morning. Now thatI’m retired I don’t schedule anything onMondays so I can look forward to doingnothing.
When I was growing up in Buffalo, N.Y.,we had many “snow days.” If it snowed dur-ing the night we would turn the radio onearly in the morning to listen to the schoolclosing announcements. We would shout for
joy when we heard the name of our school. The news of the closing was all the sweeterif it occurred on a Monday. We could stay inbed and think about snow forts and snowballfights, rather than trudging off to school.
Think about why we scream, “TGIF,” onFridays. Why do we look forward to week-ends whether we are in school or in theworkforce? Because that’s when we have theoption to choose what we do and when we doit — or even decide not to do anything at all.Psychologists tell us we feel better when weare autonomous, mapping out for ourselvesthe directions our minds and bodies willtake.
Mondays often take away our ability to bespontaneous. While working in the real
vents us from being in charge of our sched-ules, or the captains of our souls, as WilliamErnest Henley put it.
Of course, I don’t do absolutely nothingon Mondays. I take the psychologists’ adviceand schedule things that are pleasant — cof-fee with the guys, a crossword puzzle, a mus-cle-soothing suspension of tension whileusing the hot tub as a think tank, an almondcroissant at Lafayette Bakery, a quick peek atthe alarm clock before rolling over. Best ofall, whether or not I do any of these thingswill have no impact on altering or illuminat-ing our times.
This retirement policy may not work foreveryone. It works for me. It is my personalblowback against the more than 3,000Mondays between 1st grade and retirement.I’m not sure exactly how many there havebeen. I don’t want to think about that now.I’ll let you know the precise number onTuesday, sometime after 10 a.m.
world I often associated Mondays withcrises. Monday was the day calamity wasserved with coffee — Grandé problems pro-ducing Venti headaches. Running a salesoffice was much like running an adult daycare center. Invariably one or two of theoffice personnel called in sick on Mondays.Equipment seemed to suffer Monday blues, too, as frantic calls came in from customers
who needed emergencyrepairs or “loaners” to getthem through the day.
Psychologists suggest pre-venting the dreaded Mondaysyndrome by planning some-thing to look forward to. They
suggest having lunch with a friend, schedul-ing something pleasant to do, or setting yourown priorities by putting off answeringemails and phone calls. Had I done thatwhile I was working, the next appointment Iwould need to make would be at the unem-ployment office. It is that loss of autonomywhile working or going to school that pre-
