I remember the day as if it was yesterday; the sky was cloudy and on the verge of unleashing a nasty storm. I had just finished gobbling up my Cobb salad and catching up with my good friend and publisher, Tom Britt, at a local eatery over lunch. The conversation suddenly turned to business.

“Michelle, it’s time,” he said. He had been helping me set up my website, and was patiently trying to school me on the fine art of uploading pictures. This isn’t a new role for Tom to play, as he has held my hand through electronic developments and computer programs for over 15 years.

“Please Tom,” I begged. “Don’t say it. I’m not ready.” Tears were hovering in the corner of my eyes, and my lower lip started to quiver. “I just don’t think I can do it.”

He tried to reassure me as he lightly covered my hands with his and fiercely stared into my doubting eyes. “You can do it.” He gave my fingers an extra squeeze of encouragement. Then, without dropping his gaze, he reached over and pressed “Enter” on my laptop. And there it was. It was done. I had entered the world of Twitter.

I’m a late bloomer, and I understand this. I have avoided this membership for years. While my friends and associates have continually been shocked, and dare I say punitive, at my refusal to tweet, I have stood fast in my resolve.

I understand the importance of tweeting to followers from a business marketing perspective. I think. I just don’t really want to be a part of it. I have enough problems keeping up with everyday demands … like brushing my teeth, remembering to start the dishwasher and showing up at various business meetings and community events on time.

I finally (and extremely reluctantly) joined the Facebook crowd only after being publicly shamed at social gatherings for not having an account. But I always felt that becoming a part of Twitter represented a line in the sand, so to speak. And now I’ve crossed it.

“You really want to use this is an opportunity to name-drop,” Tom later explained once my first round of convulsions simmered. I wasn’t expecting such a dramatic physical response.

“Why do I need to drop names? I do not hang out with any

celebrities,” I said. Do you have to be famous to tweet? I didn’t know there were requirements.

“No, I mean like places you go, people you meet or spend time with … that’s the point,” he stated.

Why would anyone care at all as to the places I go or people I see? Did I need to tweet about my oil changes, or my cost-cutting trips to the closest wholesale club? What about when I go to the dry cleaners. Did that count?

I could see Tom was getting frustrated and had reached his limit. “Just see what other people are tweeting about and follow suit,” he said. “Maybe link to interesting sites or tweet about your humorous observations during the day.”

This was even more disturbing, as I didn’t want to have to be funny in 140 characters or less. But then the bigger worry presented itself. What if no one follows me? I felt like I was in high school all over again, worried about being noticed at a big dance or getting a date for Homecoming. Would others find me worthy? Will I be able to handle rejection?

All I know is that since becoming a part of the Twitter world, I feel a little more up-to-speed with technology. The only problem is that now I have to figure out what to say. I wonder if George Clooney is available for lunch.

See what Michelle has to say on Twitter, @MichelleFreed, or read more of her blogs on www.MichelleFreed.com.

So, you haven’t painted since kindergarten? Perfect! You will love “Wine and Canvas” – a new social event that involves a paintbrush, a glass of wine and no previous experience.

It’s a simple process; you book your spot in front of an easel for one of the classes and an artist will help you step-by-step to replicate the painting of the day … all while you sip some wine/beer and socialize with friends.

I recently checked out a class, along with about 30 other guests, at the Keystone Crossing location.

Some came fresh from the office; others were on a well planned night out; and one couple made it a date night. No kids – little Picassos have their own event called “Cookies and Canvas.”

Then the fun begins. Owner Tamra Scott introduces the artist for the evening and points out the apron, brushes and palette of acrylic paint at each seat. “We use acrylics because it will come out of your clothes,” explains Tamra. “Just in case!”

Local artist Eric Swenson then takes the stage to start the instruction of painting a scene of tree tops against a blue sky. “The leaves should just be blotches of color,” says Eric. “Don’t think about painting leaves.”

There were a couple of breaks so the class could let their paint dry and refresh their wine/beer.

After a little over two hours we had all completed a masterpiece. Although

mine looked more like black sticks stuck to the canvas instead of beautiful long limbed trees reaching for the sky, it was still a lot of fun.

You can come back as many times as you like; one guest was on her 12th visit and gives the paintings away in lieu of gifts. Another guest said it wasn’t about the art; it was just a fun night out with the girls and an alternative to going to the bars.

Wine and Canvas costs $35-$40 per session, depending on the night. You can register online at www.wineandcanvas.com, and choose the painting you would like to recreate. Wine and Canvas also can set up at restaurants and private parties. They are franchising this around the country, so if you haven’t heard much about it until now, you will probably see a lot more of Wine and Canvas in the future.

So go ahead, unleash you inner Picasso, and enjoy a fun night out!

By J. Andy Murphy

I t all started when I was just a little girl. I loved Roy Rogers and his beautiful horse, Trigger. I decided to write a letter to

Mr. Rogers and ask for a picture of Trigger. I told him that I had seen all his movies and that I wanted to grow up to be a cowboy who did good things just like he did. It was a small gesture, and one that came from the encouragement of my Aunt Myrtle.

“If you take the time to write to someone you don’t know, you should understand there may never be an answer. It’s a risk, but it will only cost you a stamp,” she said softly, as she addressed the envelope with the supplied official Roy Rogers Fan Club address.

The letter was written. I sighed as I opened the big metal mailbox slot. I dropped the letter in and walked home with the wonder of some day getting the picture I so wanted, and content that I may never receive an answer.

Two months later, my grandmother called me into the kitchen.

“Jeannine, you need to make me a promise to say nothing to anyone about what I am about to tell you,” she said firmly.

“Okay,” I said.

She looked deep into my eyes. The corners of her mouth slowly turned upward.

“Do you remember the request you made to the Roy Rogers Fan Club for a picture of Trigger?” she asked.

“Yes,” I replied.

“Well, you are getting that picture, and … Roy Rogers and Dale Evans are coming to our house for a fried chicken dinner this Sunday.”

I was too stunned to say anything. Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. This must be a dream. I pinched my arm and it hurt. No dream.

The look in my grandmother’s eyes softened. “Remember what I said. You can’t tell anyone about this visit,” she added.

I kept my part of the bargain, but when

Roy and Dale pulled up in front of our house in their taxi cab, they were dressed in full cowboy splendor – the big white cowboy hats, colorful shirts and cowboy boots with spurs that jingled when they walked.

They caught the eye immediately of the softball team playing across the street in Spades Park. Within minutes, word spread that the King of Cowboys and his sweetheart Dale Evans had just entered the house on the hill. In a matter of a half hour, hundreds of screaming kids and their parents surrounded our house. The police showed up as it was bordering on a near riot. The chanting of “Roy, Roy, come out” drowned out the conversations going on inside the house.

At 10 p.m. that night, I was given a signed picture of Trigger as well as a picture of Roy and Dale together. I smiled and softly thanked them for

coming to see me. Roy bent down and whispered in my ear, “Thank you for being a fan and writing such a lovely letter to us. I wish I could have brought Trigger here for you to ride. Maybe next time we’re in town…”

This mind-picture of actually sitting on Trigger with the King of Cowboys has never dimmed. Neither has the habit of writing letters to people I didn’t know. In today’s world, we email, text and Facebook. Letter writing has all but disappeared. I plan to share with you the journey of my letter writing and the people who did in fact take the time to answer them personally. An ordinary person with a stamp in hand and the collection of responses from famous people I never expected to hear from.

To be honest, Roy Rogers deserves all the credit for getting me started in this lifelong adventure of letter writing. Hats off to you, Mr. Rogers, and Happy Trails to all of you!

Carmel Moms Tri to Stay Fit

By Stephanie Curtis

What do 19 children, nine pairs of goggles, nine bikes, 18 running shoes and a heap of determination have in common?

Triathlon Moms.

A triathlon is a multi-sport event that involves swimming, biking and running various distances with transitions in between each sport. Competitors race to complete the

course with the fastest overall time.

Speed may not be the goal for these moms, but they aspire to keep in shape, challenge themselves mentally and physically, and set a healthy example. The thrill of competition and companionship keeps these moms motivated to swim, bike and run in the midst of balancing families, jobs and a multitude of responsibilities.

When the kids are in school, these Carmel housewives dive into the pool, pound the pavement or hit the road for a brisk

bike ride. “Once the kids get home, it’s non-stop juggling to sports practice or school functions,” said Julie Knox.

Amy Crossen admits she could not compete in triathlons without the support of her spouse, Kirk. “I get up quite early in the morning, fitting the longer workouts in while they’re at school, begging my husband to pick up my slack at home, especially in the summer.”

Behavior specialist Gaye Kerschner squeezes training in whenever she can – while waiting for her kids’ piano lessons, her son’s baseball practice, her daughter’s softball practice and choir rehearsals.

Each woman incorporates their own unique needs into a training routine, but their reasons for racing are mutual.

“I love being in the best shape of my life and meeting great people,” said Wendy Inglis, who got involved with triathlons through Team in Training, the organization that raises money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

“I try to be a role model for my kids and show them my drive to succeed,” said Carmen Berglund, a nationally certified group fitness instructor who is employed at IU Health North Hospital.

Teresa Joyce thinks exercise makes her a better mom. The former college soccer player finds the swim the most challenging aspect of triathlons. “I’m not a good swimmer, but my swim coach has helped me so much.”

Linda Firenze agrees the swim is tough. “I really have to get mentally prepared to swim. It can get pretty scary in the murky lake with all those kicking legs.”

Mallory Counihan, a college field hockey player, hopes to join the rank of TriMom someday. “I work full-time, my fiancé plays for the Colts and we keep a very busy schedule, but I miss the competitive aspect of sports.” Counihan participated in her first sprint triathlon last summer and is challenging herself to complete a Half Ironman. YuChong Sanders-Holl, Inglis, Joyce and Crossen are also competing in the Ironman 70.3 Muncie.

According to USA Triathlon, the first known swim, bike, run contests were held in San Diego in 1974; since then, the popularity of multi-sport events has exploded and continues to grow as more athletes become triathletes.

Many times athletes turn to

cross training due to an injury. Planter fasciitis forced runner Sanders-Holl to find another way of staying in shape. Five years after her transition to triathlons, she competed in her first full Ironman. “The training brings together a great group of friends, old and new, with a common goal of fun and pain during training and on race day. I love hanging out with my tri gal pals.” Watch Tom Britt’s daily video

If you’ve recently been given the responsibility of planning a child’s

birthday party, you are very aware of the fact that today’s kid parties are serious business.

There are almost endless theme ideas to choose from, and there are hundreds of cake, cupcake, and decoration options available. For Kevin Mendell,

children’s parties might be his business, but the finished product is anything but serious.

In 2002, Kevin and his wife Danya created Oogles n Googles, a children’s theme

party planning business, after becoming frustrated in trying to create a party for

their seven-year-old son. “He was really into Harry Potter, and at the

time it wasn’t a popular theme

for kids’ parties, and we couldn’t find anything for the party. My wife said ‘What if we started our own party business?’ and it grew from there,” says Mendell. The business was such a success that in one short year the Mendells decided to franchise the business, and there are now about 20 franchises across the U.S. and 3 international franchises, with two in India and one in China.

Party planning services have been around for quite some time, but what makes Oogles n Googles different is that each party is scripted. The Mendells created 15 different themes, such as Princess, Wizard, or Rock Star, and each theme aims to tell a miniature story with the birthday child as the central character in the tale. Oogles n Googles provides costumes for all the children in attendance, coordinating with the chosen theme, and guide the party through different activities that help tell the story. Mendell states, “We wanted to return a bit to traditional, old-fashioned imagination. Kids don’t have to use their imaginations that much anymore with the abundance of technology available to them. Why use your imagination when the X-Box is using it for you? But our parties allow the kids to really create their own fun.” The kids also have to utilize reading and problem solving skills while participating, so the parties have an educational aspect as well.

Imagination and make-believe are great, but what about the parents who love the convenience of hosting a party at a location outside of their home to avoid the cleaning and stress involved with having 20 seven-year-olds in their

kitchen? Luckily, Oogles n Googles and Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation have teamed up to offer parties at the Monon Center. There are multiple options to choose from, including a toddler concert party with “Mr. Kevin” (Kevin Mendell’s entertaining alter-ego), a sports themed party in the Monon gym, and a themed party in one of the party rooms at the Center. These parties are “all-inclusive,” meaning that everything from cupcakes to thank you notes are provided. The parties are also appropriate for occasions other than birthdays, as many people utilize Oogles N Googles for

Hosting parties with the Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation department makes Mendell a perfect fit to organize the KidZone activities for CarmelFest 2011. Mendell is a Carmel Rotarian, has been involved with the event for several years and has always had a natural interest in helping with the children’s activities during the festival. “When Gary Frey (CarmelFest chairman) asked me about KidZone, I jumped at the chance. I guess you could say we have given KidZone an

‘Extreme Makeover’. We have a Velcro wall planned, where the kids put on a velcro suit and jump onto a giant Velcro wall; we have giant inflatable obstacle courses; and we have boat rides and a miniature race track,” says Mendell about the revamped KidZone.

Although those activities alone would be exciting enough, Mendell’s voice truly lights up when he describes the events planned for CarmelFest’s south stage, which will be dedicated to KidZone. Although Kevin’s pre-Oogles n Googles professional career was in marketing and sales, he confesses that his heart and soul have always been in musical theater. Performing as Mr. Kevin for local preschools certainly satisfies that love, and he will be emceeing the south stage as Mr. Kevin during CarmelFest. “We really wanted to emphasize the community on the south stage. All of the acts will be local performers, and there are some really great ones here in Carmel.” Acts

planned for the south stage include local dance troups, magicians, and a Broadway review performed by the CYT theater group.

Between CarmelFest planning, hosting anywhere from nine to 11 parties every weekend, and touring around performing as Mr. Kevin, you might think Kevin Mendell would be seriously stressed out. But the joy is evident in his voice and on his face. “I just love making people smile. That’s another reason I’m so excited about CarmelFest, because it is what we do on a larger scale. You only live once – you should have some fun!” These are true words spoken from someone who has made having a good time serious business.

Every fall families flock to stores to stock up on school supplies, but Tools for School is shopping year round collecting a cache of inventory so needy families can acquire back-to-school items they could not otherwise afford.

“Children suffer ridicule when they have torn and tattered clothing and show up without the essential supplies for school,” said Jayne Slaton, director of The Merciful HELP Center. “We assist children pre-k through high

school, providing children what they need to start school with their head held high.”

The program, which has been in existence for about 18 years, started as a Girl Scout service project and has evolved into an organized, highly utilized ministry within The Merciful HELP Center at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church at 146th Street and Oak Ridge Road.

“The program has grown tremendously

in the last three years because the need is so great,” said Pam Curtis, who co-chairs Tools for School with fellow parishioner Jane Reese. “In 2009, we helped 450 children. This year we plan to provide supplies to 1,500 students.” Curtis notes glue sticks, washable markers and filler paper as pressing needs but the shopping list also includes new backpacks, pens, pencils, index cards, calculators, and colored pencils.

According to Slaton, OLMC collects

school supplies all year long, purchasing items when everything goes on sale after back-to-school shopping, and many in the parish contribute to or raise money to help fund the ministry. The staff at Keller Williams supported them with $3,000, and companies like Marsh and Forum Bank have also helped by collecting supplies.

“Many families cannot afford to spend $150 per child, or would have to make great sacrifices for this expense,” said Curtis.

Tools for School aids families countywide, but they must qualify for assistance through an application process. Forms are available from school counselors, social service organizations and online at www.toolsforschool.info.

While OLMC is the primary supporter, several other groups joined in the effort last year, including Grace Community Church, Green Valley Christian Church, Comfort Closet, and Kid’s Coats of Hamilton County. Not only do children receive a backpack filled with items on their classroom supply list, Samaritan’s Feet washes each child’s tootsies and fits them with a new pair of shoes, and the “Undie Sunday” collection crew distributes socks and undergarments. In addition, Tools for School is implementing a new program called “Book in Hand,” run by OLMC librarian, Laura Pitcock, which gives each child a book of their own to read.

Even the CYO baseball league is pitching in by encouraging teams to raise money to see coaches coach

barefoot, and the associate pastor will get in the game by throwing out the first pitch in his bare feet. “This is a fun way to get others involved in showing children that everyone believes in what we are doing,” said Slaton. “The need is astronomical since the economic downturn. We need donations and volunteerism to support these families in their fight against poverty.”

Run for public office? The thought never crossed Carol Schleif’s mind. That is, until no one else stepped into the race for the new, open Carmel City Council seat created as a result of Southwest Clay Township’s annexation into the City of Carmel.

“I had never run for political office and really had no desire to seek a public position,” said Schleif, who won the Republican primary on May 3. “I was shocked that no one seemed to want to make history and become the first councilor to represent our area. It is imperative that we have a voice on the council that speaks for the people.”

Researching the open seat and potential candidates, she was aware that several very viable people were considering the seat. But just days before the January 21 deadline, no one had filed to run. Schleif got concerned and started weighing her options.

“Passion got the best of me. I love Carmel,” said Schleif, a

small business owner, architect and former member of the Carmel Plan Commission who is very involved in the community. “I knew I had the experience and understanding of complex issues desperately needed on the council. And, I have the desire and common sense to do the job effectively.”

Schleif credits the primary win to her husband, Ron, and 15-year-old daughter, Christine, as well as close friends and neighbors who knocked on doors, canvassed neighborhoods, distributed flyers, sent messages via email and Facebook and held events for her and current councilmen. If there is no contest in the general election, Schleif will take office January 1, 2012, beginning a four-year term.

Schleif, a fiscal conservative, notes her professional design and construction experience, background as a health professional, municipal and state government commission work as well as extensive community service as additional talents she will bring to the council.

After debating the annexation issue with Carmel for more than a decade, Southwest Clay became part of the City of Carmel on July 27, 2010, adding a 20% increase in Carmel’s revenue – approximately $1.3 billion dollars to the city’s net assessed property values.

Involved from the start, Schleif followed the annexation proceedings and was an active part of No Ordinance for Annexation (NOAX). She plans to be a strong voice in maintaining the character of Southwest Clay. “Becoming tied to Carmel was a challenging process. The residents of Southwest Clay finally agreed to become annexed and there are several items that still need to be addressed.”

A few of those issues include burying utility lines along collector streets, spending $40 million to improve roads and fix drainage issues, and updating Southwest Clay in the comprehensive plan.

“Checks and balances are the backbone to the success of our form of government,” said Schleif. “If there is honesty, transparency and free exchange of ideas and concerns then I see a team approach that will serve the city well.”

For people who appreciate fine wine, there is no need to travel to Napa Valley to uncork the robust character of a wide variety of reds and whites. Indiana vineyards are producing high quality flavorful grapes and cultivating their businesses by harvesting the fruit into original vintages.

According to the Indiana Wine Grape Council, the state grape acreage has increased 300 percent in the last 20 years. Currently, there are about 60 wineries in Indiana. Most offer a stop along the Hoosier wine trail, educating visitors on how to grow grapes and make wine, finishing tours with a tasting providing samples of various chardonnays, cabernets and other homegrown flavors.

Chateau de Pique, an 80-acre winery located in Seymour, Indiana, has taken an alternative route, moving tastings off site to retail locations. Recently, the winery opened a tasting room in a historic train depot on 82nd Street in Castleton.

“This building is charming, upscale and with some

remodeling turned into a relaxing tasting room and functional retail store,” said Emily Torres, events coordinator for Chateau de Pique. Wooden storage racks line the walls, displaying 3,000 bottles consisting of 21 varietal wines. “We hold tours and events in Seymour and people are welcome to visit. But now, wine lovers in Indianapolis can get a taste of Seymour’s winery in their own backyards.”

Gregory Pardieck founded Jackson County’s first winemaking enterprise in 2005 and dedicated the operation to his parents, Ralph and Marian Pardieck. Through several years of research and working with winemaking and grape growing experts based at Purdue University, Pardieck prepared and enriched his soils, determined a layout and designed a plan for his vineyard. “He planted his first crop in 2007,” said Torres. “Purdue helps us and other Hoosier winemakers with everything from soil testing to the winemaking process to marketing.”

Pardieck harvested his first grapes last year. The farm grows five grape varieties including Cabernet, Chambourcin, Stueben, Vignoles and Chardonel. The fruit is harvested in

the fall when it is ripe, the grapes are pressed, the juice fermented and poured into oak and stainless steel barrels for aging.

“We make dry reds and whites, semi-sweets, fruit and port wines,” said Torres. “People are shocked to see grapes growing in Seymour, but we are now the 5th largest winery in the state and we want Hoosiers to be aware that Indiana can produce very good fine wine.”

Chateau de Pique offers wine tasting at no charge, but a bottle of wine retails from $9.99 to $29.95. “We start with the dry and work our way through the list,” Torres says of the tasting procedure, and suggests you come with a palate prepared to see, smell, taste and toast.

T he Bridgewater Club, a 750-acre golf course community just north of 146th Street between

Carey and Gray Roads in Carmel, has been booming for years. Beautiful homes of every price range and size

make up the vast neighborhood. One such neighborhood is Bridgewater Lakes, a low-maintenance community with custom homes and access to the social membership of the Bridgewater Club. Okay, so what does this have to

do with Carmel High School? Well, the Vocational Building Trades class at CHS built one of the homes for sale in Bridgewater Lakes. Unbelievable? Not really. This class has been building various homes around the area since 1976 – and for those of you who don’t do math – that’s over 35 years!

John Coghlan just completed his 15th year as “the” instructor for the Vocational Building Trades class. Prior to teaching, John worked for a builder and owned his own business, so he came well prepared. And as “the” instructor, John is the only instructor that teaches this class, and this is the only class he teaches. So he is 100% committed.

The class is dedicated exclusively to building a home each year. Rest assured, the kids do come to this class with some background experience. They are required to take a prerequisite class, which builds a smaller scale home inside the school. After completion of this entry-level class, they are able to jump straight into building an upscale, custom home. “The great thing is they come in with a set of base skills,” says John. “They understand the vocabulary and the terms used in building construction.”

The first step takes place in the spring, prior to the fall semester, where a floor plan is selected from a CHS Architecture student. “The top five are chosen from a sub-committee within the board,” explains John. “We choose a plan that we think we can sell in the current market. It is not necessarily the biggest or fanciest.”

During the first week of class, John looks at each student’s skill level,

goes over all the safety aspects and works on small building projects to refresh their memories. The second week, they go straight to the job site to begin their 9-month journey. But before I go on, I must say this: there are two classes offered, both are five hours long, and go every other day! So these kids are just as committed as their teacher. “Most of our students are seniors and juniors who are interested in some aspect of construction or the trade (straight after high school or college), such as an engineer or general contractor,” says John. “But we do have some students who just want to know how a house works, or just want to take the class for fun.”

As the class builds throughout the year, so does the kids’ excitement. “They really get excited about what they are learning at the job site,” says John. “The most difficult parts for the students are the details and finishes. As with most people, some are very detailed oriented and some are not.”

What John said would shock us are the quality of kids at CHS. “They are smart, dedicated and have such ingenuity. These things always amaze me, and the kids amaze me at the job site every day.”

The students build most aspects of the home, including the following:• Help pour the concrete

slab• All framing of the first

floor walls• Electrical rough-ins• Some insulation• Some drywall hanging

and finishing• Most of the painting• All trim work including

cabinets, baseboards, crown molding, etc.

• Electrical finishes including outlets and light fixtures• Some hardwood flooring• Some landscaping and paver patios• Punchlist completion such as door and cabinet knobs,

paint touch-ups

In areas of construction that are not completed by the class, John uses his background in the industry as the class plays the part of a job site superintendant. The class will inspect

the work to ensure a proper finish and use it as another learning tool. “I try to run the job site as a superintendant to show the kids what it is really like,” explains John.

When I took a tour of the home, I was dumbfounded. The kitchen was adorned with gorgeous granite countertops and fancy cabinets. The entire house had extensive crown molding, beautiful built-ins, a front door video monitoring system, built-in

speakers, solid wood doors, striking upgraded light fixtures and so many other upgrades … I’m still in shock that high school students put it all together. I was very impressed. And once again, Carmel High School has far exceeded my expectations.

John also mentioned that the majority of the kids do very well in class. “I require them to keep a written journal,” says John. “And their grades are based on work at the job site and

their participation. I give them a daily grade.”

The home is located at 15342 Mission Hills Drive at Bridgewater Lakes in Carmel. It is currently listed by ERA Real Estate Links, Mike Deck, and is being sold for an impressive $350,000. “The scope of the homes astonishes me,” concludes John. “The quality of the kids at CHS allows us to build such a distinguished home every year.”
