Airbags are designed to supplement the

protection provided by safety belts.Even though today's airbags are alsodesigned to help reduce the risk ofinjury from the force of an inflatingbag, all airbags must inflate in milli-seconds. It will then deflate so quicklythat people are usually unaware of theirexistence.

All of the airbags in the vehicle willhave the word AIRBAG embossed onthe trim or on an attached label near thedeployment opening.

For frontal airbags, the word AIRBAGwill appear on the center of the steeringwheel for the driver and on theinstrument panel for the outboard frontpassenger.

When the ignition switch is turned ON,the airbag warning light will illuminate

briefly. This shows that the light bulband airbag system are functioningproperly.

See Warning Light for Airbag on page58.

    AIRBAG SYSTEM*

    Warning

Because airbags inflate with greatforce and faster than the blink of aneye, anyone who is up against, orvery close to any airbag when it

inflates can be seriously injured orkilled. Do not sit unnecessarily closeto any airbag, as you would be ifsiting on the edge of the seat orleaning forward. Safety belts helpkeep you in position before andduring a crash. Always wear a safetybelt, even with airbags. The drivershould sit as far back as possiblewhile still maintaining control of thevehicle.

    Warning

The airbag system may be triggeredabruptly by improper operation.

    Warning

You can be severely injured or killedin a crash if you are not wearing yoursafety belt, even with airbags.Airbags are designed to work withsafety belts, not replace them. Also, airbags are not designed to inflate inevery crash. In some crashes safetybelts are the only restraint. SeeWhen Should an Airbag Inflate ? on

    Important Note

    Remember that rear-facing child seats

must be installed on rear seats. Childrenshould use rear-facing safety seats. Donot install these on front seats. Ifinstalled on front seats, deployment ofthe airbag may cause severe injury oreven death.

    Children Should Sit On RearSeats

    According to statistics on accidents,

12-year-old or younger children aresafer when sitting on rear seats withproper protective devices than on frontseats. Children should always sit onrear seats whenever possible.

The reason is not only that children maybe injured by airbags, but research alsosuggests that children are safer in rearseats even if there are no front airbags.

    Correct Seating Position

Adults or teenagers sitting on the driver

seat or the passenger seat should also sitin a correct manner to ensure safe andeffective function of airbags.

The best seating posture for adults andteenagers is as shown:

    HEX0045

    (Right posture)

    Always fasten safety belts.

    All passengers including the driver

should always fasten safety belts sothat the risk of injury duringcollisions can be minimized.

Airbags normally do not inflate on

a rear or side impact. In these kinds

of collisions, passengers who do notwear safety belts will not beprotected by protective devices, thus resulting in casualties.

Before collision, braking maycause passengers who are notwearing safety belts correctly tomove forward, bringing theirbodies close to or in contact with theairbag assembly. The deploymentof the airbags may cause injuries ordeaths.

Adjust your seatback to a com-fortable and safe position.

Keeping your seat away from the airbag assembly will not reduce the pro-tective effectiveness of airbag. Thefarther you sit from airbag assembly, the lesser the chance of injury when

the airbag inflates suddenly. Butremember not to move the driver'sseatback too far away to enable com-fortable operation of the steering

Slightly recline the seatback andlean your back against the seatbackwhen sitting. Do not lean orotherwise move closer to the airbagassembly, i.e. the distance from theairbag should be minimum 25 cm.

Do not bring any part of your bodyinto contact with or close to theplastic decorative cover of airbagassembly (at the central part of thesteering wheel or the instrumentpanel above the glovebox which isin front of the front passenger seat).Keep your head and body more than25 to 30 cm away from the airbag. The farther away, the safer.

Do not put any articles, childrenor pets between yourself and theairbag.

    The airbag assemblies in your

vehicle are located at the steering

wheel and in the dashboard abovethe glove box. Depending onvehicle models, your vehicle maynot be equipped with the airbag inthe dashboard above the glove box.If any object is placed on, above, orclose to the plastic cover of airbagassembly, the object could bethrown onto your face and yourupper body when the airbag is

    inflated, resulting in serious injury.

Children and pets must not sit onpassenger's laps. Anything that mayhurt the passenger when the airbagis being inflated should not beplaced on his or her lap.

Do not install any non-geniuneaccessories on the steering wheel orinstrument panel since they may

hinder the airbag from beinginflated, interfere with operation ofthe system or hit the passenger andcause injuries.

Never make any change to the

    components of the airbag system.

Improper operation may causeaccidental inflation of the airbagand may injure the driver and frontseat passenger.

If the car has been driven intodeep water, seek help from yourCHEVROLET retailer.

Dismantling of steering wheel orinstrument panel can only be

    performed by your CHEVROLETretailer.

The airbag is designed to be inflatedonly once, and once it has beeninflated, it should be replaced byyour CHEVROLET retailer.

Do not stick or place anything onthe steering wheel and the airbagcover. Use only a wet cloth to cleanthe surface of the airbag cover.

    Caution

If your car is severely damaged andthe airbag is not inflated or your caris not severely damaged but theairbag is activated, this does notnecessarily mean there is a fault withthe airbag system.Collision sensors detect the rate ofchange of speed in an axial directionrather than the extent of damage.

    Overturning or rollover of the car;

Hitting a lamp post or a tree at a lowspeed without great force.

    Warning

Children who are up against, or veryclose to, any airbag when it inflatescan be seriously injured or killed.Airbags plus lap-shoulder belts offerprotection for adults and older

children, but not for young childrenand infants. Neither the vehicle'ssafety belt system nor its airbagsystem is designed for them. Youngchildren and infants need theprotection that a child restraintsystem can provide. Always securechildren properly in the vehicle.

    Warning

The best protection can be providedonly when the seat is in a properposition.

No obstacles are allowed within theinflation area of airbag.

Wear the seat belt correctly so that theair bag can provide protection.

    Front Airbag System*

The front airbag system includes an

airbag in the steering wheel and anotherin the dashboard on the passenger side.Depending on vehicle models, yourvehicle may not be equipped with theairbag in the dashboard on thepassenger side.

These airbags can be identified by themarking AIRBAG.

The driver frontal airbag is in themiddle of the steering wheel.

The outboard front passenger frontalairbag is in the instrument panel on thepassenger side.

Frontal airbags are designed to inflatein moderate to severe frontal or near-frontal crashes to help reduce thepotential for severe injuries mainly tothe drivers or outboard front passen-gers head and chest. However, they areonly designed to inflate if the impactexceeds a predetermined deploymentthreshold. Deployment thresholds areused to predict how severe a crash is

likely to be in time for the airbags toinflate and help restrain the occupants.

Whether the frontal airbags will orshould deploy is not based on how fastyour vehicle is traveling. It dependslargely on what you hit, the direction ofthe impact, and how quickly yourvehicle slows down.

Frontal airbags may inflate at different

crash speeds. For example: If the vehicle hits a stationary

object, the airbags could inflate at adifferent crash speed than if thevehicle hits a moving object.

    When Should an Airbag Inflate?

    Where Are the Airbags?

    43Seats and Restraints

  • 8/10/2019 CarManual SAIL Petrol 24Sep13

    47/204

If the vehicle hits an object that

deforms, the airbags could inflate ata different crash speed than if thevehicle hits an object that does notdeform.

If the vehicle hits a narrow object(like a pole), the airbags couldinflate at a different crash speedthan if the vehicle hits a wide object(like a wall).

If the vehicle goes into an object atan angle, the airbags could inflate ata different crash speed than if thevehicle goes straight into the object.

Thresholds can also vary with specificvehicle design.

Frontal airbags are not intended toinflate during vehicle rollovers, rearimpacts, or in many side impacts.

Always wear your safety belt, evenwith frontal airbags.

In any particular crash, no one can saywhether an airbag should have inflated

simply because of the damage to a

vehicle or because of what the repaircosts were. For frontal airbags, inflation is determined by what thevehicle hits, the angle of the impact, andhow quickly the vehicle slows down.

    What Makes an Airbag Inflate?

In a deployment event, the sensingsystem sends an electrical signaltriggering a release of gas from the

inflator. Gas from the inflator fills theairbag causing the bag to break out ofthe cover and deploy. The inflator, theairbag, and related hardware are all partof the airbag module. Frontal airbagmodules are located inside the steeringwheel and instrument panel.

    How Does an Airbag Restrain?

In moderate to severe frontal or nearfrontal collisions, even belted occu-pants can contact the steering wheel orthe instrument panel. In moderate tosevere side collisions, even beltedoccupants can contact the inside of thevehicle.

Airbags supplement the protectionprovided by safety belts. Frontal

airbags distribute the force of theimpact more evenly over the occupant'supper body, stopping the occupantmore gradually.

But airbags would not help in manytypes of collisions, primarily becausethe occupant's motion is not towardsthose airbags. See When Should anAirbag Inflate? on page 42 for moreinformation.

Airbags should never be regarded asanything more than a supplement tosafety belts.

    Warning

When an airbag inflates, there maybe dust in the air. This dust couldcause breathing problems for peoplewith a history of asthma or otherbreathing trouble. To avoid this, everyone in the vehicle should getout as soon as it is safe to do so. If you

have breathing problems but cannotget out of the vehicle after an airbaginflates, then get fresh air by openinga window or a door. If you experi-ence breathing problems followingan airbag deployment, you shouldseek medical attention.

What Will You See After an Airbag

    Inflates?

After the frontal airbags inflate, theyquickly deflate, so quickly that somepeople may not even realize an airbaginflated. Some components of theairbag module may be hot for severalminutes. For location of the airbags, seeWhere Are the Airbags? on page 42.

The parts of the airbag that come into

contact with you may be warm, but nottoo hot to touch. There may be somesmoke and dust coming from the ventsin the deflated airbags. Airbag inflationdoes not prevent the driver from seeingout of the windshield or being able tosteer the vehicle, nor does it preventpeople from leaving the vehicle.

    Caution

If an airbag covering is damaged, opened, or broken, the airbag maynot work properly. Do not open orbreak the airbag coverings. If thereare any opened or broken airbagcovers, have the airbag coveringand/or airbag module replaced. Forthe location of the airbags, seeWhere Are the Airbags? on page 42.See your CHEVROLET retailer forservice.

    Replacing Airbag System Parts After

    a Crash

    Warning

A crash can damage the airbagsystems in the vehicle. A damagedairbag system may not workproperly and may not protect youand your passenger(s) in a crash, resulting in serious injury or evendeath. To help make sure the airbagsystems are working properly after acrash, have them inspected and anynecessary replacements made assoon as possible.

If an airbag inflates, you will need to
