People often ask me, “Where do you get the ideas for your compositions?” My answer is always the same: “If I knew exactly where the ideas came from, I’d go there every time I set out to compose a new piece .” The fact is nobody knows where the ideas come from . Ideas just happen . The idea for Anthracite Blaze arose after a visit to my hometown in Carbondale, Pennsylvania . Located in the Lackawanna Valley, which is famously depicted in the breath-taking landscape by George Innes, Carbondale was founded in the early 19th century after the discovery of an enormous vein of anthracite coal . Tragically, a century and a half later, the same anthracite coal which had made Carbondale a boomtown, destroyed it when the mines caught fire; thus, the title Anthracite Blaze. Many of the descendants of the immi-grant miners who settled in Carbondale to pursue the American Dream have remained in this still beautiful, peaceful and secluded region . Among them are scores of relatives who share with me the lineage of the Campolo (now Compello) and Cogliandro families .
Performance Notes
Using only the first seven notes in the repertoire of a beginning band, I have attempted to convey in Anthracite Blaze the atmosphere of the dark and harsh world of coal mining . The descending scales in the bass line depict a miner’s entry into the mines, while the ascending scales of the melody suggest his struggle for a better tomorrow . Stylistically the music should be played marcato except for the brief contrasting section from mm . 29 through 36 . The mood is dramatic throughout .
Thank you for choosing this composition . I hope performing it proves to be a worthwhile endeavor . Your comments are most welcome .

About the Composer
Joseph Compello, a native of Carbondale, Pennsylvania, holds degrees in music educa-tion from the Peabody Conservatory and Towson University . During his 31 year career as an instrumental music teacher in Maryland, he wrote numerous compositions for his students . In 1994, Andrew Balent began publishing many of these classroom-tested pieces including his debut publication Cadets on Parade, and the 1996 best-seller Rock to the Max, Mr. Sax . Now retired from teaching with well over 100 published works to his credit, Compello continues to draw on his extensive background in music education to compose new music exclusively for Carl Fischer’s Performance Series .
His music for young players is now a model for college curricular study by music education students . A master’s thesis by Abel Borg entitled The resourceful and engaging compositions for beginning band by Joseph Compello is available at: http://gradworks .umi .com/MR/75/MR75572 .html .
Compello’s journey from school teacher to internationally published composer was recently chronicled in the Baltimore Sun . His ASCAP award winning music is now performed world-wide in venues ranging from school concerts to Carnegie Hall .
