CARL / ABRC Research Project on Social Media

An environmental scan of social media usage in CARL/ABRC libraries 2011Dean Giustini (UBC reference librarian & SLAIS adjunct faculty)

Background

The purpose of this 2010-2011 environmental scan is to provide an overview of social

media usage at twenty-nine (29) CARL / ABRC libraries’ websites. This scan was initially

undertaken prior to the development of our Phase I survey of Canadian academic librarians’ use

of social media. The social media tools ‘on view’ at Canadian academic library websites were

determined through simple visual identification and inventory at each of twenty-nine CARL /

ABRC libraries’ websites. The investigators created a list (see appendix I, page 5) of academic

libraries’ use of social media and sent it to contacts in each library for feedback. All suggestions

for improvement were added in April and May 2011.

There is considerable heterogeneity in the use of social media in CARL / ABRC libraries.

As of May 2011, the most commonly-used tools are blogs (individual and group blogs);

Facebook and Twitter (social networking); delicious and Zotero (social bookmarking and citation

management); collaborative writing tools such as wikis and GoogleDocs; and the very popular

multimedia-sharing sites YouTube and SlideShare. Undoubtedly, there are CARL / ABRC

academic librarians across the country experimenting with and using other tools (i.e. such as

Gowalla and Foursquare). We seek to document this activity more fully in phase II of our study.

Methods

The researchers examined the main websites of twenty-nine (29) Canadian academic

libraries (CARL/ABRC-members) and browsed their underlying directories and branch webpages

in 2010 and 2011. As new examples of social media usage were discovered through our

browsing or via contact with colleagues, these examples were added to the growing list of

social media in use. As many upper and lower level pages at these Canadian library websites

were examined and usage was again inventoried. Our challenge was to ensure that as complete

a list of websites was developed as possible. The researchers used a number of search methods

to uncover content; the scan including identifying the social media tools that were most

prominently-displayed on library pages as well as doing advanced Google searching by library

domain name. The resulting document captures an overview of the major social media usage at

CARL/ABRC’s twenty-nine libraries in mid-2011.

Observations

Social media usage in CARL/ABRC libraries in 2011 varies considerably from institution to

institution and from region to region. We discern heightened activity on several CARL / ABRC

member libraries’ websites in the first few months of 2011. Institutional and regional variations

can also be discerned by comparing larger CARL / ABRC member libraries (e.g., UBC, UofT,

UofA) and smaller institutional members (e.g., Brock, Dalhousie, Carleton). Judging from the

range of examples on library websites, there seems to be widespread interest in using social

Page 3: CARL ABRC social media environmental scan 2011

media at CARL / ABRC libraries: blogs, instant messaging tools and social networking sites such

as Facebook and Twitter are used with some frequency and several academic libraries are

announcing their participation in various online listservs and forums. With so little homogeneity

in adopting social media in CARL / ABRC libraries and no obvious leader in Canada, one has to

infer that most libraries are doing their own thing. However, we have tried to find examples of

best practices and there are clues available. In addition to website browsing, we searched for

examples of conference reports and other academic writing of the librarians at CARL / ABRC

member libraries; in addition, we initiated conversations with some of the librarians at those

institutions who are using social media with some regularity. Some of our conversations have

taken place on tools such as blogs, Facebook and Twitter, and will comprise a part of our work

in phase II.

A major difficulty in listing Canadian academic libraries’ usage of social media with some

accuracy is compounded by the sheer range of activities that is taking place behind the scenes

at these libraries. In addition, the list goes out of date very quickly. With respect to staff training

programs for social media, we sense that they are gaining some traction in the larger libraries

(UofA, UBC, UofT). We are also beginning to see that CARL / ABRC libraries are discussing the

impact of tools such as Facebook and Twitter in the academy (not to mention new technologies

such as smart phones, iPhones and mobile devices). In phase II of our study, we aim to uncover

why several CARL / ABRC libraries have abandoned some initial projects (such as blogs) for

Giustini – May 2011 Environmental scan’ of social media usage in CARL/ABRC libraries 3

Page 4: CARL ABRC social media environmental scan 2011

extended periods of time, or completely. We hope to extract information about academic

librarians’ successes and failures in using social media in their professional activities in phase II.

Statistics arising from our inventory of CARL/ABRC websites:

All CARL/ABRC libraries (29) are using RSS feeds in one way or another with a majority

using blogging tools (27/29), forms of chat (25/29), Facebook (24/29) and/or Twitter

(21/29). We believe academic librarians also use these tools in some way personally in

their work but are waiting for more accurate numbers and data in phase II.

The use of photo-sharing and social bookmarking tools is considerably less common in

Canadian academic libraries than in American academic libraries. That said, the

researchers feel that the numbers will continue to rise over time given the importance

of the visual arts in scholarship. It seems clear that many individual librarians use these

tools but they do not necessarily do so for professional reasons or in their daily work.

Phase II of our survey aims to obtain further information about the use of tools.

Regarding francophone universities (UQAM, UdeM, Sherbrooke, Laval), there are some

tools in this scan that are used by Anglophones only. It may be that French-speaking

universities use “French language” tools (“media sociaux” or “outils sociaux”) and not

the specific “English” tools that are popular at the moment.

Five (5) of the 29 CARL/ABRC libraries (Calgary, McGill, McMaster, Toronto, York) have

hired professional librarians with responsibilities that are similar to those of an

emerging technology librarian (or similar positions such as McMaster's User Experience

Librarian). At least three (3) libraries have created teams of academic librarians who
