Adolescence is one of the most difficult stages in life beginning in biology and ending in society.

It is a period filled with both physical and emotional growth, a turbulent, confusing passage from childhood to adulthood.

The teen years are dominant with anger, self doubt, frustration, confusion, and alienation.

There is no doubt that for most families, the teen years present a challenge for both parents and children.

Challenging Role of Parents in Caring Adolescents

Although the nature of relationships is changing, the continuity of family connections and a secure emotional base is crucial for the positive development of young people.

The teen era is said the mirror image of toddlerhood.

Research at the Department of Education in England found that children whose parents made bad decisions regarding their upbringing were more likely to have behavior problems.

Challenging Role of Parents in Caring AdolescentsParents’ own behavior plays a crucial role in

defining what is normal for their children. Risky parental behavior is associated with risky adolescent behavior.

In times of deep feelings, most adolescents feel like their parents are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Researchers found that youth from families high in authoritative parenting generally had higher academic performance.

Challenging Role of Parents in Caring AdolescentsOne study found that working mothers

average eighteen hours per week of housework, plus ten to fifteen hours per week of child care, while fathers average three hours of housework and two hours of child care per week.

Today, however, there are challenges to this traditional gender-based struc-ture. In many families both fathers and mothers are bringing home paychecks.

Challenging Role of Parents in Caring Adolescents

Today teens face smoking and drug addiction, Internet and mobile addiction, virtual bullying in addition to physical bullying, and trouble with vicious texting.

Adolescents need a safe, caring space so they can come to terms with their identity and adjust to their changing looks and plan a future they are happy with.

In this situation, parents are important to their children. They can rebuild this relationship with time, care and patience.

Measures for Developing Healthy Family Roles in Caring AdolescentsIncreased arguing between parents and children is very

common as children enter the teenage years. We should not give unnecessary pressure on teen/s according to our wish at this age.

Listening is a powerful way to build bridges where none existed before. We should spend family time with our adolescent and when our adolescent talks with us, then pay attention and watch, as well as listen.

We should show respect our teenager’s feelings. One way we can respect our child’s privacy is by knocking before entering their room and making sure that any care workers involved in their care do the same.

Measures for Developing Healthy Family Roles in Caring AdolescentsParents should allow freedom to teenagers within

limits and use logical consequences for their behaviors instead of responding with anger or punishment.

This is a time of formulating new ideas and ideals, and our child may be paying more attention to the world than he ever has. So, we should help our child to develop critical thinking skills by talking and expressing opinions and feelings.

Some adolescents suffer from depression or anxiety and they have emotional ups and downs. Then, parents should talk openly about the problems.

We should use smaller sentences speaking with our teenagers to convey our requests. Lecturing does not usually produce real results because they often tune-out after the first few sentences.

Religious beliefs and practices have the potential to influence many aspects of life, including family life and parenting. Parents should engage in Religious activities as we know that this is a foundation for a ‘good life’.

A sense of self-esteem is one of the most important gifts a parent can give a child. Parents should encourage their teen to pursue his or her interests and find ways to involve their child in school or community activities where his or her talents can be expressed.
