A new year has begun. And what a year last year was! Different feelings and new experiences were brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. We are grateful to God for the opportunities He provided in the midst of the pandemic, to find new ways to keep in touch, to support and encourage each other even with "distancing". Amazingly, during overwhelming loss, grief, sadness and fear, it was emphasised that God indeed is in control and that His grace is sufficient for us.

My prayer is that during 2021 you will seek to improve your relationship with Jesus Christ who will continue to guide and protect you in this year. The checklist below may give you a helpful start.

Note From the Editor

Unit Overview: In this unit the prophet Malachi levels charges against the Israelites which emphasise the need for believers to live lives which offer meaningful worship which is acceptable to God. It calls for us to have a good and consistent, relationship with God and with one another. The unit also highlights the importance of meaningful giving of our resources to God’s ministry and obedience to God in giving the kind of service which He expects of members of His Church. Background to the Book of Malachi

Author: Malachi. Except what is found in this book, nothing is known of the prophet’s life. He was probably a contemporary of Nehemiah. The conditions described in the prophecy best correspond to that time.

Recipients: To the priests and people of Jerusalem and Judah who had become faithless in their covenant relationship with YAHWEH.

Theme: The need for radical reform and covenant renewal in the spiritual life of Judah to prepare for the coming Messiah and “The Day of the LORD”.

Style of the Book: Malachi is written in an unusual form. The Lord is presented as having a dialogue with His people.

Historical Background: Malachi prophesied in the period after the exile. Judah was experiencing a general moral decay around the fifth century BC. The promised prosperity and dominion to follow their release from Babylonian exile had failed to materialise.

The small faithful group attempting to restore the glories of ancient Israel was discouraged because of drought, famine and social disorder (Haggai 1:6; Isaiah 59:3-15). The nation was experiencing spiritual depression. The Temple was neglected and some pagan practices were prevalent. There was violation of the Mosaic law and widespread scepticism regarding God’s justice and love for His people.

Malachi’s Message: Other prophets preached to other Near Eastern nations in addition to God’s people, but Malachi’s sole audience was the covenant community comprised of post-exilic Jews.

Malachi was sent as “messenger” to address Judah’s spiritual decline. His charges to the nation came through six oracles, representing six burdens of the Lord. In them, he rebuked Judah’s moral and spiritual condition and reminded them of their responsibility to keep the Mosaic covenant.

The prophecy’s contents were the Lord’s words and they were a first-person ad-dress from God. The term “through Malachi” literally is “by the hand of Malachi”.

Conditions Addressed: By the hand of Malachi, God responded to the attitudes, actions and comments of His people. They had become dishonest in their dealings with each other and with God. They were an ungrateful people led by an unfaithful priesthood. Malachi addressed the following sins: 1) robbing God of divine love, 2) dishonouring His name, 3) disrespecting God with blemished offerings, 4) justifying impiety, 5) dealing treacherously with others, 6) intermarriage with unbelievers, 7) divorcing their wives, 8) sorcery, 9) impurity and 10) oppression.

CENTRAL TRUTH Genuine acts of worship of God

renew the worshipper’s faith

in Him.

On Monday, Shania got up late and shouted at her mother for not waking her up earlier. On Wednesday, Shania forgot the Math assignment was due, copied it from a friend, and submitted it to the teacher. On Thursday, Shania teased a classmate calling her fat and ugly. On Friday, Shania went to hang out in town with her friends after school. She got home late and told her mom she had been at school working on a group project. On Saturday, Shania went to her boyfriend’s house and they “made out”. On Sunday, Shania went to church and sang a ‘special’ before the congregation. Shania said that she was a Christian and felt that nothing was wrong with the way she was living because she was just acting like other teens. Do you think God accepted the worship that Shania brought on Sunday? Give reasons.

Give four words that described the kind of sacrifices that were being offered to the LORD?( v.13-14) __________________________________ 10. Did the LORD find those sacrifices acceptable? (v. 1) ______________________________________________________________ 2. How is this living sacrifice to be presented? (v.1) _________________ and ________________________. 3. What two things must we do to live lives that are pleasing to God? (v. 2) _________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________

Genuine and acceptable worship results when we acknowledge God’s awesome greatness and holiness.

Respect and reverence for God is the mark of such worship. The priests and the people of Israel however dishonoured and disrespected God by bringing unacceptable sacrifices to God in worship. God deserves true worship, and when we offer this to Him God renews and strengthens our faith.

CENTRAL TRUTH God honours

covenant relationships

and judges those who violate them.

Jamal was happy to get a Saturday job working for Mr. and Mrs. King. He would cut their yard, wash the vehicles, clean the garage and do other small jobs they requested. They were a nice couple and they paid him well. Jamal was happy for the money he earned because it helped with his bus fare for school and allowed him to pay for some of his personal items. His mother was pleased because Jamal was learning to be responsible and he was easing a little of the financial strain from her.

One Saturday, Mrs. King was home alone and asked Jamal to help her move a piece of furniture. When he went into the house, Mrs. King hugged him and tried to kiss him. Jamal pushed her away, rushed out of the house and ran home. A few days later Mrs. King called and apologised and said it would not happen again. Jamal accepted her apology and went back to work for the Kings. However, a few weeks later, Mrs. King did the same thing again. In light of this, what would you advise Jamal to do concerning his situation?
