Why GrabTaxi? For me, what stood out with GrabTaxi was its social cause – that it was driven to turn a public transportation problem around, both for its passengers and providers. Joining the company at its startup stage has been particularly interesting – it has certainly allowed (and forced) me to take on new skill sets and roles that were previously alien to me. I've transformed from being a data novice to helping GrabTaxi optimise and standardise its data analytics practices. What made you move to Singapore and how did you handle your relocation from Malaysia to Singapore? The appeal of working at GrabTaxi's R&D centre was too big an opportunity to turn down. Thus far, my instinct has proven true – working with extraordinary engineering, data and business talent has really facilitated my career growth. The transition from Malaysia to Singapore was fairly smooth – the homogeneity of work culture across the Malaysian and Regional teams really helped me feel at home within my first weeks in Singapore. Also, it doesn't hurt that Singapore and Malaysia are so similar in both its culture and people. Tell us about your typical work day/week in GrabTaxi. A productive GrabTaxi work day really starts with a quick huddle over drinks and food at the beginning of the week. This allows us to come into the new workday stacked with new ideas, and the clarity to execute on these ideas from the get-go. How did you become a Data Scientist? What do you love most about your job? Coming from a business analyst and consultancy background, I started out in a business analytics role with GrabTaxi. I was quickly given the opportunity as well as the resources to pick up the skills necessary for the Data Scientist role. As there was such a data-driven culture, GrabTaxi was prepared to invest in my venture into the area of data science. Of course, that is only one third of the equation – I too had to be driven and interested enough to solve business problems using data we collected or already had. More importantly, my teammates, who have since become close friends, are important catalysts to my development. We coach each other, share ideas, demand high standards and thereby bring out the best in all of us. The emergence of data mining and analysis really opens up new and creative avenues for solving old, deep-rooted problems. Being at the forefront of this type of data use really excites me. Top 3 things about Singapore that you always share with your family and friends back in Malaysia. 1. Public transportation here is fantastic, the food not so. 2. People here are what make working in Singapore great. They're driven, passionate and make great and fun teammates. 3. It is a beautiful and orderly city.
