MAKING  A  MATCH  What  interests  you  today  may  not  seem  right  tomorrow.    Make  your  decisions  on  what  you  are  today.    As  you  grow  older  you  will  notice  your  choices  becoming  more  focused.        Choosing   a   career   is   a   process-­-­learn   about   yourself,   your   interests,  your   field   of   study   and   the   educational   requirements/training   needed.    Then  make  a  career  plan  and  GO  FOR  IT!

Four  year  colleges  want  students  to  have  both  a  broad  based  education  and  an  education  in  a  specific  subject  area.    Most  of  these  institutions  require  students  to  take

St.  Johns  River  State  College    

Ever  wonder  how  community  colleges  work?  Community  colleges  provide  affordable  (about  half  the  price  of  a  4-­year  college),  career  oriented  programs  that  enable  students  to  begin  a  career  after  one  or  two  years  of  study.  A  community  college  can  help  you  begin  your  college  experience  to  continue  at  a  4  year  college  while  working  with  a  2  year  AS  degree  or  college  credit  certificate,  making  more  money.    One-­Year  Programs  allow  the  students  to  specialize  in  a    specific  area.    He/she  receives  a  certificate  or  diploma.      

 Then  there  are  two-­year  specialized  program  after  which  he/she  will  receive  an  AS  (Associate  in  Science)  degree  in  the  area  of  study  or  

 Students  complete  the  first  half  of  a  four-­year  degree,  earning  an  AA  (Associate  in  Art  or  also  known  as  a  Transfer    Degree).  They  will  then  transfer  to  a  four-­year  college  to  take  the  last  two  years  of  study in  their  major criminology,  teaching,  ac-­counting,  pre-­

SJRSC  has  campuses  in                    St.  Augustine,  Palatka  and  Orange  Park.    Some  of  the  programs  offered  are

This  scholarship  will  help  pay    of  your  tuition  at  any  accredited    community  college  or  technical  center  in  Florida.  

 Maintain  a  B  average,  and  the  scholarship  continues  for  four  years!  

 How  to  receive  this  scholarship:  3.0  GPA  in  the  required  core  courses  3.5  in  any  Gold  Seal  Technology  Program  (three  credits  in  one  program)  Pass  the  CPT,  ACT  or  SAT  with  specific  scores    How  to  keep  the  scholarship:  Maintain  a  B  average  while  in  college.        Required  college  prep.  courses  include:  

4  credits  English  3  credits  Social  Studies  3  credits  Natural  Sciences  2  credits  Foreign  Language  (4yr  university)  4  credits  Mathematics  (Algebra  I  and  above)                    (See  page  19  for  more  details)  

FLORIDA  GOLD  SEAL  SCHOLARSHIP  

Did  you  know?    There  are  approx.  2,500  four-­year  colleges  and  universities  in  the  U.S.      The  average  cost  of  tuition  at  a  public  college  is  $4,000  per  year.      The  average  cost  of  tuition  at  a  private  college  is  $30,000  per  year.  The  average  cost  of  tuition  at  a  community  college  is  $2,100  per  year.                                      AND  COLLEGE  TUITION  KEEPS  GOING  UP!

READ!  There  are  many  resources  you  can  use  to  investigate    careers.    The  Federal  government  produces  the    OCCUPATIONAL  OUTLOOK  HANDBOOK.    This  book  is  a  good  place  to  start.    You  can  also  find  this  info.  on  the  web  at  http://www.bls.gov/oco/    

ASK  .  .  .    What  do  you  do  on  a  typical  day?  How  did  you  prepare  for  a  career?  What  do  you  like  best  about  your  job/career?  How  is  the  job  market?  Are  there  opportunities  for  advancement?  What  is  the  average  starting  salary?  What  training  do  I  need?  Would  you  go  into  this  field  again?  

MYTH    

There  is  only  one  set  of  responsibilities  for  every  occupation.                                WRONG!  People  in  positions  with  the  same  title  often              perform  different  tasks.    Their  duties  vary              according  to  their  interests  and  capabilities.  

School  is  what  YOU  make  of  it!    1.   Develop  Good  Study  Habits.  2.   Maintain  a  Positive  Attitude.  3.    4.   School  builds  confidence  and  self-­esteem.  5.   A  high  school  diploma  is  a  must  if  you  want  a  good  job!

 The  military  trains  individuals  so  they  can  protect  the  interests  of  our  country.    To  do  this,  they  offer  qualified  high  school  graduates  a  good  salary  and  free  job  training.    There  are  over  2,000  job  specialties!  75%  of  those  jobs  have  a  civilian  counterpart!    College  students  who  enter  ROTC  enter  the  military  as  an  OFFICER.    The  National  Guard  pays  for  your  college  tuition in  exchange  for  2  weeks/summer  and  1  weekend  per  month!    WOW free  college!    And  you  get  paid  for  those  weekends  !    Check  it  out  yourself!
