INTRODUCTION

Nursing is one of the fast growing professions in the health care field Nursing Council Act came to existence in 1948 to constitute a council of nurses to safeguard the quality of nursing education in the country.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN INDIA:Addictions Nursing Career.1.Addictions Nurse: Addictions nurses provide care for patients seeking help with addictions such as alcohol, drugs or tobacco. Where they work: Hospitals, Outpatient Facilities and Community Care Centres.Qualifications: Addiction Nurses need to qualify as a Registered Nurse (RN).

AMBULATORY CARE NURSING CAREER / EDUCATIONAmbulatory Care Nurse: Ambulatory Care Nurses are registered nurses who provide preventive care and treat patients with a wide variety of illnesses and injuries. Where they work: Ambulances, Day Surgery Units, Ambulatory Care Surgeries, Physicians Offices, Community Centres, Schools, Workplaces, Home Care and in Clinics. Qualifications: Ambulatory Care Nurses are qualified Registered Nurses (RN), with a minimum of two years experience.

CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION LAB NURSING CAREER Cardiac Catheterization Lab Nurse: Cardiac Catheterization Lab Nurses, are Registered Nurses working in the field of diagnosis of heart disease. Where they work: Hospitals and Clinics. Intensive Care Units (ICU), Coronary Care Units (CCU) or Cardiovascular Catheterization Laboratories (CCL) depending on the hospital or clinic. Qualifications: Cardiac Catheterization Lab Nurses are qualified Registered Nurses and need to have an advanced understanding of cardiac anatomy and physiology.

CERTIFIED NURSE ASSISTANT (CNA) CAREER

Certified Nurse Assistant: Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs) provide basic nursing duties under the supervision of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN).

CERTIFIED NURSE MIDWIFE CAREER

Certified Nurse Midwife: A Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) is a registered nurse with additional training in delivering babies and providing prenatal and postpartum care to women. Where they work: Hospitals and work in patients homes, clinics, birthing centres, schools and community centres.Qualifications: To become a Certified Nurse Midwife, the nurse must first qualify as registered nurse.

CRITICAL CARE NURSING CAREER EDUCATION

Critical Care Nurse: Critical Care Nurses are registered nurses who work mostly in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in hospitals. Where they work: Hospitals, nursing schools, outpatient surgery centres. Qualifications: Critical care nurses must first qualify as registered nurses. Although not mandatory, most critical care nurses choose to complete a critical-care training course. These programs consist of a written examination, extensive continuing education and clinical experience.

DIABETES MANAGEMENT NURSING CAREERDiabetes Management Nurse: Diabetes Management Nurses are registered nurses who assist patients to manage diabetes. Where they work: Diabetes Management Nurses can work in hospitals, outpatient clinics and often travel to hold clinics in regional areas.Qualifications: Diabetes Management Nurses are qualified registered nurses

HOLISTIC NURSING CAREER INFORMATIONHOLISTIC NURSE:Holistic nursing is now more widely accepted and recognized than ever before.WHERE THEY WORK:Works In Hospitals, Acupuncture Clinics, Holistic Clinics, Home Health, Health Farms.QUALIFICATIONS:Certified In Holistic Nursing, Must Complete Healing Arts Program. HNC(holistic Nursing Certification) Provided By American Holistic Nurses.17HOME HEALTHCARE NURSE CAREERSHome Health Care Nurse: Home Health Care Nursing is a growing area, as more and more patients prefer to receive care in their own homes.Where they work: Hospital settings, nursing homes, along with travelling to patients homes. Qualifications: To become a certified home health care nurse, the nurse will need to study an academic program in home care. Many nursing institutions work closely with home health agencies placing qualified nurses in suitable positions

HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE NURSING CAREERHospice and Palliative Care Nurse: Hospice and palliative care nurses are registered nurses who work in collaboration with other community and health care providers e.g. social workers, physicians .Where they work: Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses work in many locations including Hospitals, Nursing Homes and Hospices. They can also visit patients in their own homes.Qualifications: Hospice nurses must first qualify as registered nurses, and gain two years full time experience as a registered nurse in a hospice environment.

INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES NURSING CAREERSIntellectual and Developmental Disabilities Nurse: Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) , are nurses who provide care for patients suffering from a number of intellectual and developmental disabilitiesWhere they work: Hospitals, Schools, Worksites, and Primary Care Centres in the community.Qualifications: Registered Nurses can gain Certification in Developmental Disabilities Nursing (CDDN). To certify the nurse must provide documentation for 4,000 hours (2 years full-time) work in a developmental disabilities nursing practice.

MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING CAREERMedical surgical nurses are registered nurses who provide health care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. Medical surgical nurses also care for a patients physical and psychological health.WHERE THEY WORK:Medical surgical nurses can work in hospitals, acute care units, long-term care facilities, outpatient clinics and home care settings.QUALIFICATIONS:RN License, Two Years Experience As RN, 1 Full Year Experience In Medical Surgical.ONCOLOGY NURSING CAREER

Oncology Nursing: Oncology Nurses are qualified registered nurses who provide healthcare for patients with cancer. Oncology Nurses assist the oncologist/radiologist with the administration of radiation and chemotherapy. Where they work: Hospitals education, screening, detection and healthcare in relation to cancer. This includes hospitals, hospices, clinics and community care settings.Qualifications: The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) offers four certification examinations for registered nurses, all are accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Centre's Commission on Accreditation.

PAEDIATRIC NURSING CAREERPaediatric Nurse Practitioner: A paediatric nurse practitioner is a registered nurse and nurse practitioner with advanced training in paediatrics. Paediatric nurses provide healthcare to infants, children and adolescents. Where they work: Paediatric Nurse Practitioners can work in many settings including large hospitals, community centres, nursing homes, childrens hospitals and schools.Qualifications: To apply to a Paediatric Nurse Practitioner Program, the nurse must first be a qualified Registered Nurse with several years experience. Preferably the nurse will have experience working with children. As with all advance practice nursing specialties, Paediatric Nurse Practitioner Programs are two years in duration.

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING CAREERS

Public Health Nurse: Public Health Nurses provide a range of health care services to the community. Public Health Nurses are usually based in community health centres and are assigned to cover specific geographical areas.Where they work: Public health nurses are assigned to cover a specific geographical area. They travel to patients homes, schools, community centres, and other healthcare facilities within this area. Public health nurses can work in public health departments, home health agencies, and ambulatory care clinics.Qualifications: To become certified as a Public/Community Health Nurse must be a qualified registered nurse with a minimum of 2 years relevant work experience.

THE PROFESSIONAL ADVANCEMENT MODEL

Model ComponentsThe Professional Advancement Model contains four roles:1. Clinical Nurse I (CN I);2. Clinical Nurse II (CN II);3. Senior Clinical Nurse I (SCN I), andSenior Clinical Nurse II (SCN II).

PROFESSIONAL ADVANCEMENT MODEL OVERVIEWHiring Criteria: A nurse with less than 12 months of experience will be hired as a Clinical Nurse I. A nurse with greater than 12 months of experience will be hired into the roles for which they can show evidence of meeting that roles qualifications (minimum role for a nurse with greater than 12 months experience is CNII).

Cont...Promotion Criteria:A nurse may apply for a promotion after successfully passing the probationary period.A nurse cannot be in the discipline process when applying for a promotion.A nurse may apply for advancement to Senior Clinical Nurse I or Senior Clinical Nurse II when meeting the requirements of the roleApplicants manager must endorse application.Director must endorse SCN II applications.

ROLE OF NURSING EDUCATIONNursing education is the professional education for the preparation of nurses to enable them to render professional nursing care to people of all ages, in all phases of health and illness, in a variety of settings.Nursing education impart scientific and up to date knowledge in the area of medical, social, behavioural and biological sciences.Nursing education helps the nurses to inculcate the appropriate nursing skills and the right attitude to the students. Theoretical and practical knowledge is essential for rendering intelligent and efficient nursing care.Nursing education prepare nurses as good leaders to provide qualitative care.Nursing education helps to implement health care programmed and health care services in community.

Increase in health consciousness in India, the quality of health services has also improved. So, skilled and specialized nurses can get excellent employment opportunities in government or private hospitals Nurses can also get employment in clinics, nursing homes, orphanages, old age homes, industries, military services, schools and other places.Nurses can get specialized duties like taking care of patients in psychiatry, obstetric and other sections.Nursing education provides the scope in teaching, supervising and higher level of administration.

CONT...Nursing education has great scope for male nurses. They are valuable in activities of professional organizations where travel is necessary.Nursing has great scope in abroad. They can find jobs in specialized field like surgical, medical, ICU, CCU and Emergency Room (ER)Nurses get high pay packet in abroad.Nurses get many opportunities for studying and settling there in abroad.
