Wolfgang Aulitzky, MD is the Medical Director of the American Austrian Foundation. He is Associate Dean for International Medicine and Distance Learning, Adjunct Prof. of Clincal Urology and Adjunct Prof. of Clinical Reproductive Medicine at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University/New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is also Associate Prof. of Urology at the University of Innsbruck and was Visiting Scientist at the Population Council at Rockefeller University, New York. He is a member of the American, German and Austrian Societies of Urology and was awarded the Zuckerkandelpreis of the Austrian Society of Urology in 1989. In 1995 he received the Silver Medal and 2007 the Golden Medal for Merits to the Republic of Austria. As Director of the Medical Program of the American Austrian Foundation he has initiated the Salzburg Cornell-, Philadelphia-, Columbia- and Cleveland Duke Seminars. Dr. Aulitzky earned his medical degree at the University of Innsbruck in 1977, was a research fellow at the University of Uppsala, Sweden in 1978-79 and at the New York Hospital - Cornell University Medical College in 1988-1989. He received his training as an urologist at the University of Innsbruck and the General Hospital of Salzburg. As a clinician he works as Medical Director and Chairman of the Department of Urology at the Confraternitaet-Privatklinik Josefstadt in Vienna. He is the author of more than 140 publications on Urology, Andrology and Health Care issues and is co-author of books on basic and clinical urology/andrology. Kenneth Stein, MD, FACC (Course Director) is the Associate Director of the Clinical Cardiovascular Electrophysiology Laboratory at The New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical College and Associate Professor of Medicine at Weill-Cornell. He is an internationally recognized expert on cardiac pacemakers, defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronization therapy. He has lectured and demonstrated implant techniques throughout the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Japan and China. Dr. Stein’s research interests include atrial and ventricular tachycardia mechanisms, noninvasive risk stratification for sudden cardiac death, cardiac resynchronization therapy, and selective site pacing, and he has published over 85 peer-reviewed manuscripts and over 130 abstracts in these fields in journals including Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the American Journal of Physiology and the Journal of Clinical Investigation. He is the principal investigator for the SMART-AV trial, a major international multicenter randomized trial of optimal programming for cardiac resynchronization therapy. Max Pichler, MD (Co-Course Director) is Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Vienna and the Paracelsus Private Medical School in Salzburg and Head of the Department of Cardiology at the Paracelsus Private Medical University of Salzburg. Since 1983, he has been a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the European Society of Cardiology. Dr. Pichler earned his medical degree at the Universities of Innsbruck and Vienna. During his internship and residency at the Department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology at the University Hospital in Vienna, he became involved with all important issues of Cardiology. Dr. Pichler served as a Max Kade Fellow during his Research Fellowship at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles from 1977 to 1979. He then became the Director of the Intensive Care Unit of the First Medical Department and in 1980 Associate Professor at the University of Vienna. In 1985 he became Chief of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center of Grossgmain-Salzburg, and since 1998 he is the Director of the Department of Medicine II and Cardiology in Salzburg, Austria.Dr. Pichler has published a great number of articles in cardiology (noninvasive cardiology, prevention and rehabilitation) and related fields of intensive care. He is known as an ambitious teacher with a strong interest in postgraduate education. Johann Altenberger, MD is working as cardiologist at the Department of Internal Medicine II of the Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg. After training in general medicine, sports medicine and internal medicine, Dr. Altenberger specialized in cardiology and intensive care medicine. His main field of work is heart failure and interventional cardiology. Dr. Altenberger built up an outpatient heart failure clinic and a nurse-led home based care system for heart failure patients for the whole region of Salzburg. Matthias Heigert, MD is Director of the Catheterisation Laboratory of the Medical Clinic II / Cardiology of the Paracelsus Medical School Salzburg. Dr. Heigert performs a number of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as angioplasty, stenting, rotablation, IVUS, OCT, pacemaker implantation and transvenous occlusion of PFO´s, and aortic stenosis valvuloplasty and revalving. Paul Kligfield, MD, FACC, FAHA is Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, and has been at the Cornell Center of The New York- Presbyterian Hospital as Director of the Cardiac Graphics Laboratory since 1977 and as Medical Director of the Cardiac Health Center since 1995. He is a 1970 graduate of Harvard Medical School and was an intern and resident in Medicine at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. He spent a year as a clinical research fellow in Cardiology at St. George's Hospital in London before completing his cardiology fellowship at Cornell. In addition to patient care activities and teaching, his clinical investigation is focused on various aspects of the electrocardiogram, including new algorithms in exercise testing and methodologic issues in standard electrocardiography. Dr. Kligfield serves on the Board of Governors of the American College of Cardiology and as a member of its Annual Scientific Program Committee. He is President of the International Society for Computerized Electrocardiology, President of the New York Cardiological Society, and he previously has been a Director of the New York Heart Association, Secretary and Trustee of The New York Academy of Medicine, and President of the American Osler Society. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of MDS Centralized Cardiac Services and consults with several manufacturers of electrocardiographs. Dr. Kligfield has published numerous research papers and editorials, and he serves on the editorial boards of a number of subspecialty journals. Gina LaRocca, MD received her MD from Creighton University School of Medicine, Omaha, Nebraska, and completed her residency at the University of Connecticut, Hartford, Connecticut (Internal Medicine Board Certification August 2001). This was followed by a fellowship at Columbia University, New York, New York (Cardiovascular Disease Board Certification January 2008). Dr. LaRocca practices General Cardiology and Cardiovascular Medicine, and is Director of the Adult Congenital Cardiovascular Disease Center in the Starr Pavilion 4 at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell. Her practice includes patients with hypertension, coronary artery disease and its complications, valvular heart conditions, and those who have undergone heart surgery or interventional procedures, as well as adults who have been diagnosed with congenital heart disease as a child. She works in close affiliation with all physicians in the Division of Cardiology, including sub-specialists in Cardiac Electrophysiology, Heart Failure, Diagnostic and Interventional Cardiac Catheterization, and Non-Invasive Testing. Dr. LaRocca has a special interest in non-invasive imaging with transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography both in adult cardiovascular disease as well as complex congenital heart disease. She also specializes in cardiac MRI to better delineate cardiovascular disease as well as congenital heart defects. Manish Parikh, MD, FACC, FSCAI is an interventional cardiologist in New York City. Dr. Parikh completed his undergraduate training at Rutgers University and graduated with High Honors as a bachelors of Science in Biomedical/Electrical Engineering in 1986. He completed his medical training at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School in 1990 and was awarded the Alpha Omega Alpha (Medical Honor Society) in his junior year. Dr. Parikh went on to complete his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at The New York Hospital and was Assistant Chief Resident in 1993. He went on to specialize in Cardiovascular Diseases and Interventional Cardiology at The New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Medical College of Cornell University and joined the faculty in 1997. After spending ten years on the faculty of the Division of Cardiology as Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine and Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program, he was recruited to Lenox Hill Heart and Vascular Institute in New York City beginning in July of 2007. Here Dr. Parikh has joined a prominent Interventional Cardiology endovascular group as Co-Director, Section of Coronary Intervention and Co-Director of Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program. Dr. Parikh enjoys a national and international reputation for excellence and expertise in clinical interventional cardiology, medical education, and scientific innovation. He has lectured extensively on complex coronary intervention throughout the US, Europe and India, and has dedicated his career to clinical education for trainees in cardiovascular medicine. He has directed the development of the Interventional Fellows Institute, a unique and comprehensive electronic core-curriculum (virtual textbook) currently used by nearly all 126 ACGME accredited interventional cardiology fellowship programs in the United States and available to practicing physicians worldwide. Also, a biomedical/electrical engineer, Dr. Parikh has collaborated in the development of several new interventional devices and technologies, and has championed the use of medical simulation to train and strengthen procedural skills for physicians in training and practice. Dr. Parikh is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine with specialty certification in Cardiovascular Diseases and Interventional Cardiology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Society of Coronary Angiography and Intervention. He resides in Manhattan with his wife and son. Tracey L. Shannon, RN is a registered nurse, practicing in New York State. She is currently the clinical research coordinator for the Electrophysiology Laboratory in the Division of Cardiology at Weill Cornell Medical College. In this role, she handles all administrative aspects pertaining to research protocols and collaborates with investigators in the screening, education, testing and follow-up of patients participating in over 35 clinical protocols. Ms. Shannon graduated from Boston College in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and is currently pursuing her Master’s level Advanced Practice degree in Adult Primary Care at New York University. She is expected to graduate in May, 2009. Ms. Shannon has 15 years of nursing experience in Cardiology in the areas of Interventional Cardiology, Research, Cardiac Transplant as well as Administration. Prior to her current role, Ms. Shannon had over 5 years of experience as the Patient Care Director for Interventional Cardiology. In this role, she directed and supervised both the clinical and administrative services for the Adult and Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories, Transesophageal Echocardiography and Electrophysiology Laboratories. She was responsible for 70 employees and a $32 million dollar operating budget. Ms. Shannon has won three awards for nursing leadership from New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical College. She currently serves as the New York Downstate representative for Cardiac Care Associates in the American College of Cardiology and is a volunteer for the New York City Medical Reserve Corps disaster response team.
