CREATING A THINKING ORGANISATION - CATO CARDIO uses ‘ ’ (a 360° individual relationship review) technique to enable staff to

safely examine issues and challenges with colleagues they work with frequently, whilst developing significantly better relationships as well as improved team working and communication

we provide a purpose-built to enable staff to concentrate on finding ‘live’ real-time solutions to your organisation’s most pressing challenges. By teaching a range of recognised and proven thinking techniques (6 thinking hats, mind mapping, force-field analysis, clustering and brainstorming…) we enhance existing thinking and planning skills whilst developing the ability to work effectively in cross-organisational, multi-agency or partnership teams

the CARDIO programme challenges individuals to think and act cooperatively across their own organisation, partner organisations, and within other sectors. Meta-Leaders utilise influence rather than authority and operate outside the scope of their traditional professional boundaries, providing inspiration, guidance and momentum for actions that extend beyond organisational limits

as in the field of competitive sports, coaching is the way the best get better, faster. is CARDIOs practitioner coaching practice, which combines thinking, systemic and psychological techniques and tools, with operational business experience to help individuals leverage their talents and add value to their organisations. PRIMARY TASK ANALYSIS – PTA

the Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) and the Imagine Methodology (IM) are approaches to organisational process modelling (including business process modelling) which can be used both for general problem solving and in the management of change contexts and issues

the primary use of SSM is in the analysis of complex situations where there are divergent views about the definition of the problem — "soft problems"

some examples of soft problems are - How to improve health services delivery; How to manage disaster planning; When should mentally disordered offenders be diverted from custody? What to do about homelessness amongst young people?

IMAGINE – CREATING SUSTAINABLE ORGANISATIONS

the purpose of the Imagine approach is to provide participants with insights into the ways in which a community can form and make personal and meaningful assessment of their own sustainability

the methodology guides participants through “events” that focus on either real communities in which participants have direct involvement or case study based scenarios where participants adopt roles of people involved in creating better places

the aim of the methodology is to give participants a wider understanding of what a sustainable organisation can and should be and to develop generic skills for knowing and understanding what constitutes such an organisation

Page 14: Cardio The Corporate Culture Consultants Big Brochure (2009 10)

TRIPLE TASK - TT The Triple Task technique is made up of three components (as the name suggests) and is a variant on the IMAGINE methodology described in Bell and Morse (2008) and which in turn is a manifestation of the ‘Systemic Sustainability Analysis’ (SSA) theory also put forward in Bell and Morse (2003) and an extension of ‘Soft Systems’ analysis developed by Peter Checkland and others: Seeks to encourage participants to arrive at a shared understanding of ‘what is’ and

‘what can be done’ in any context.

Provides an external analysis of group interactions arrived at by facilitators who are not within groups. This is a reflective review of the manner in which the groups work using Action Learning Cycle (including the Being, Engaging, Contextualising and Managing or BECM matrix).

Is a self-analysis by individuals within groups of themselves, and their group interaction using the SYMLOG approach. SYMLOG has a history going back to 1979 when it was first introduced by Bales and Cohen and has since grown to become a popular approach to the analysis of group work and has been applied in a wide variety of contexts. For a group of individuals the answers to the questionnaire generate a table and the results are mapped onto a ‘field diagram’ and interpreted. In the ‘Triple Task’ process the SYMLOG questions at the individual and group level help to generate the categories within the BECM matrix.

Task 1 (PTA).

Task 2 (BECM).

Task 3 (SYMLOG).

Page 15: Cardio The Corporate Culture Consultants Big Brochure (2009 10)

PROJECT MANAGEMENT – INCLUDING LOGICAL FRAMEWORK ANALYSIS AND PRINCE2 the Logical Framework Approach or LFA has been applied in a variety of contexts and, as with SSM,

has found its way into Open University Systems teaching

the LFA involves the development of a four by four matrix, containing the main story or the project (the narrative summary), the main assumptions or risks (a key item - often noted as being absent or under-represented in project planning) and the means of measuring success in terms of performance, impact, sustainability and strategy

the LFA can also provide a systemic, if highly structured, means to capture the outcomes of PTA and provide the community with a means to plan change strategies. LFA stands alone as an approach to project planning and management. It can also act as a lead into more structured approaches such as PRINCE2

ACTION LEARNING CYCLE – ALC

we value the use of Action Research (AR) as a means to understand complex scenarios, although the approach is often related to information systems contexts and challenges

AR has also been tied into tackling issues of self-reflection, vulnerability and learning from outcomes and as a viable means to deal with conflicts and competing stakeholder requirements

the notion of gaining a greater understanding of the value of others views: ‘starting from where the client is’ rather than from what the consultant might do if he or she were ‘in the client’s shoes’ (Bridger 2007)’ is a key theme within our Culture Curriculum
