Hello, reading on Sora is a good app that I use to read books. It keeps me entertained and I enjoy reading on it. Recently I have read a book called Mockingbird that I definitely recommend. It is about a young girl with Asperger's syndrome and she and her dad must deal with the loss of her brother. It is like a rollercoaster for Caitlyn because of her Asperger's. But I definitely recommend this book.

City of Culture
www.cncs.school
This week marks the beginning of our City of Culture journey.
Why Coventry?
This is the city where movement began, from innovation in the transport
industry to a history of activism. Our city has moved people for centuries. For a
whole year, we will celebrate our city with events, music, dance, theatre, and
large-scale spectacle.
Our first enrichment activity celebrates inspirational characters from our great city. These talented individuals all went to Cardinal Newman and grew up in Coventry. We have some fantastic ex pupils who have gone on to inspire others on a global scale.

• Over the next month we would like you to contribute to our celebrations by producing a biography of someone you find inspirational that is from/lives within Coventry. This will need to include:
• Who they are? (Name, age, background)
• Where locally in Coventry they are from?
• Why they are an inspirational character to you?
• This needs to be displayed in the most creative and attractive manner possible. There will be a winner selected from each year group whose work will be displayed and they will receive a prize.
• Deadline for this first task is the 1.3.2021. You will submit your work via your tutor on Teams.
Ms Oakman’s inspirational
character, from Coventry, is a man called Mark
Woods. He has taken part in 35 major
expeditions over 18 years, covering over 10,000
kms of polar ice and connecting with 1 million
children in 34 different countries. He was born
and lives in Coventry.

Dear Year 8,Another week of remote learning has passed us by, we have
continued to shine in our engagement and attitude to towards our learning. Your snow photos have been a highlight for me this week, seeing you all outside and happy brightened my day. Keep
up the hard work , please ensure regarding your lessons you email your teacher directly. Remember this month in our daily
emails we will be participating in Friendship February, take part in our daily challenges and spread kindness during this difficult
time. This week's article was written by Kelsey Powell 8LHR:
Miss Oakman
Holocaust Memorial Day,
This week in assembly we focused on remembering those who lost their lives
during the Holocaust. We learnt that Holocaust memorial Day is celebrated on the
27th of January every year. It is a day where we remember all the all those who
lost their lives in the genocide that took place during WW2. The Holocaust went
on from 1941 till 1945. This was not just Jewish people but others that Hitler
persecuted for being different.
It is important that we celebrate Holocaust Memorial Day because we need to
remember how far we have come, how we have learnt from the past and how we
need to continue to educate ourselves, so this never happens again.
Holocaust Memorial Day is a day for everyone to remember the millions of people
who were killed, or whose lives have been changed, by the Holocaust.
On this day we also remember the people who have been affected by Nazi
persecution and terrible crimes committed during conflicts.
Holocaust Memorial Day is a key event highlighted of the national calendar. What
could be more important to celebrate every year on the 27th of January other
than the Holocaust?, My point of view is that most people think that Holocaust
Memorial Day has been with us since the end of the war, but according to my
research and learning inside and out of school that’s far from the truth. There are
genocide's that still take place today and we must stand up against this.
By Kelsey Powell.

Student Article
COVID-19, Lockdown, Isolation: this is the reality we all currently face. This isn’t what we want, and it certainly isn’t what we need especially when we face the thoughts of our GCSE’s, but this isn’t forever. Remember that. I know it seems tough now, but I promise it will get better. This is our opportunity to take time for ourselves, think of your future job and how to get there and just enjoy what we have currently.Remote Learning: how do you find it? Can you say you’re trying your absolute best? This time for us is the most crucial for our future especially with the uncertainty ahead. We must try our hardest every day and have no regrets. Treat each day like a normal day of school and always keep a routine, this is the only normality we can get, and it is the best thing you can do. The use of Microsoft teams allows us the opportunity to have high standards of learning, we should utilise this opportunity. Teams is a simple and easy way to send work to teachers, where the live lessons in my opinion are almost as good as normal lessons, but of course there are limitations. We just must make the best of the situation. When it comes to the weekend or after school it is so important to keep motivated, keep active, keep happy. It’s ok to not be ok. So, share your feelings with friends and family; it’s so important right now to keep contact with friends and talk to the people closest to you. Your concerns may even help your family and friends; we’re all in this situation, so be kind and mindful! Especially as we all know that life right now can be like watching paint dry; so, try to keep your daily routines as normal as possible and keep yourself busy. It’s also vital to get some fresh air and a change of scenery, so try to go out for a walk, however just getting active is beneficial. Why not set yourself some goals each week? Or challenges to keep yourself occupied? Like going for a run and pushing for an improved time, or just baking a cake, improving the recipe all the while! I’ve set myself goals and I couldn’t recommend anything better, something to focus on, something to push for. If running and baking is not for you, just listen to some music and take some time to yourself to wind-down. Use this gift of time wisely! This time for all of us is difficult but it’s not forever- remember that. Sometimes you must hurt in order to know, fall in order to grow, lose in order to gain because life’s greatest lessons are learnt through pain. Don’t give up because of one bad chapter in your life. Keep going, your story doesn’t end here. We’re in this together.

‘Strive for progress, not perfection’In uncertain and distressing times like these, we must
remember to be kinder to ourselves; nobody is perfect and continuing to put the effort in each day to improve and
progress is all anybody can ask of you. Think back to where you were this time last year, and you will realise how far you
have come as an individual since then. Be proud of how much you have already achieved, and excited for what you
are working towards next!

It is now approaching the time of year when students in Year 11 (and those in Year 13 not going to University should be making applications for next year.
CollegeA lot of students are unsure about making applications without having their estimated grades, but providers are asking students to make applications and leave out grade predictions. Colleges have advised they will interview and offer places on courses and will then put the student on the correct level of course when grades are released.
ApprenticeshipsThe government's own website is the best one to find potential vacancies:https://www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeshipStudents should start applying for any vacancies they are interested in as they come up and can register for alerts of relevant vacancies, so they don't miss any.
Vacancies will continue to be advertised via the school's Twitter account:

Coventry's Twinned places around the world
This week our pupils have been exploring the history of Coventry's twinned towns and cities around the world and the reason for these links. Please have a look at some of the great work they have produced.
CAEN
Caen, located in the European country known as France, is the capital of “The French Department of Calvados” in the region ofNormandy. In 1957, a link between Coventry and Caen was established and recognised when the Lord Mayor of Coventry was in Caen, attending the opening of Caen University. Althoughthe first link was officially recognised in 1957, some claim that an unofficial bond goes as far back as December 1946 when the BBC arranged an international broadcast with them on Christmas Day. This is what sparked contact between the mayors. The city is the location of which the University of Caen was founded by King Henry VI of England. It is a productive city with many factories and regular mining. Caen is a city in France located by the River Orne in Normandy.

VOLGOGRAD
Coventry twinned with Volgograd. As Coventry still lay in ruins, our Civic and Faith leaders reached out to other bombed citiesacross Europe and, as a result, we are one of the most twinnedcities in the UK. We twinned with Volgograd in 1944. VolgogradIs the capital of the Volgograd Oblast in southern Russia. The friendship between Coventry and Volgograd, former Stalingrad, was cemented because both cities experienced the devastation of the Second World War.
