creating the cover

The Staff: This issue we decided we needed a big change. We chose senior Jaden Hambrick be-cause he would be the easiest to contact and he had great drawings. On the far left is Paul Marik, directly behind him is Lil’ B, and on the far right is Miley Cyrus.

Surrounding are pictures from Jaden’s facebook of other drawings he has done.

donut PollWe scoured Fond du Lac for the perfect dough-nut. Here is what we found.Brittany Ecker // News Editor

The Fondy editors got together and decided to have a big poll on the best donuts in Fond du lac. We picked local stores to buy and rate the donuts at. The places we picked are as followed, Donut one Piggly Wiggly, donut two Walmart, donut three Festival, donut four Pick N Save and donut five Kwik Trip.

#1 donut- Kwik trip ($1.50)#2 donut- Walmart ($3.48 )#3 donut- Piggly Wiggly ($4.50)#4 donut- Pick n save#5 donut-Festival ($3.54)

“Donuts are good for your soul,” senior Mariah

Spletter said.

“I love these donuts,” junior

Marcus Pickart said.

“Number five was a krispy kreme,

its the best of all,” senior

Quincy Armon said.

“Num-ber one tastes the best,” junior Katie Matysik said.

the Music Man is a classic love story where the bad boy becomes good to get the girl. The Fond du Lac

performances this November went well and met every expectation that was set. “The Music Man was chosen because it’s a well-known, kid friendly show that a lot of people will enjoy,” senior Josh Gutzmann said. He was a member of the barbershop quartet. It challenged the students and provided a high qual-ity of entertainment. “This particular genre has not been tapped,” director Steve Wilson said. “It is very famous show and we really wanted to tackle it.” Students on stage, in the pit and be-hind the scenes rehearsed every day after school for a few hours since the end of August. “There were lit-erally 100s of hours of work by ev-eryone involved,” Mr. Wilson said. The cast gave a performance to the lo-cal middle schools. Some of the vis-iting students from Theisen were ipressed. “I think it was wonderful,

and it was like f an tabu lous , ” Theisen seventh grader Chloe Wisom-Peterson said. “I loved it.” “It’s cool how they talk so fast in the begin-ning,” Theisen seventh grader Anna Koepke said. The Music Man is a cap-tivating story of Professor Harold Hill, played by senior Henry Dhonau, who is a con man who ar-rives in River City, Iowa looking to make some money. Professor Hill makes his money from charging the town’s families for instruments and uni-

forms for an all-boy’s marching band and then plans to leave town. Little does Harold know, the local librarian Mar-ian, played by junior Maya Mockert, sees right through his plan. However, when Harold helps Marian’s younger brother overcomes his shyness and lisp, the li-brarian and the con man fall in love. Many people involved felt that the stu-dents putting on the show should be supported by their peers and community.“I think that there is just a lot of cool mu-sical effects and there’s lots of puns. It’s really really quite funny,” junior Mariah Loehr said. “I think everyone should al-ways see the musical because it’s a mu-sical and they’re good, and they’re your peers so you should go see them just like everyone goes to the football games.”

The Advanced marketing students at Fond du Lac High School are ganging up to help out Park-

side Elementary. They are responsible for the entire retail operations of it’s school-based enterprise. but they also understand that one area of operating a business that is just as important as customer satisfaction is social respon-sibility. They are helping them raise enough Box Tops, Milk Moola caps, La-bels for Education, and Tyson Food’s Project A+ labels to help fund the pur-chase of new playground equipment. Collecting these items isn’t a new concept for Fond du Lac students. Most have been doing it from an early age as all of the elementary buildings in the Fond du Lac School District col-lect them and offer some type of reward for the students. Since these corporate consumer loyalty programs are specifi-cally designed for K-8 schools, often-times families will stop collecting them when their children get to high school. The Cardinal’s Nest is hoping that all lo-cal residents will reconsider rather than throwing those “dollars” into the trash can, dropping them off at their local el-ementary, middle school, or high school. “I was having a conversation about the various playgrounds at our local el-ementary schools with my Cardinal’s Nest team at the end of summer, and we talked about how students at some schools have access to more playground equipment options than others,” said Jennifer King, advanced marketing teacher and school store advisor. “I mentioned that many of the PTO’s at the schools use the money they receive

from loyalty program in-centives to purchase new playground equipment.” From there the stu-dents decided to be-come a “Big Brother” to Parkside Elementary and help in their col-lection efforts as they would like to see some new opportunities for those students next year. Local residents may drop off Box Tops, Milk Moola Caps, Labels For Education, Tyson Food’s Project A+ labels at any public school in the Fond du Lac School District. The Cardinal’s Nest is the collection site for Fond du Lac High School, elementary schools include Cheg-win, Evans, Lakeshore, Parkside, Pier, River-side, Roberts, Rose-now, STEM Academy or Waters, and middle schools include Sabish, STEM Institute, Theisen, and Woodworth. One of the big questions people keep asking, “How much have they collected so far and what do they need to collect to achieve their goal?” That really is kind of hard to measure be-cause we’ve had some e-mails and phone calls asking if the items can be taken di-rectly to the schools which is a definite yes! As far as here at the high school, the project was really introduced and launched last week and has since accumu-

lated 3 full quart sized bags of Box Tops, Milk Moola Caps, and Labels For Edu-cation. Of course the more that comes in the more excited the group becomes. But really, the goal in this case is creat-ing awareness and hopefully preventing any Box Tops, Milk Moola Caps,or La-bels For Education from going into the trash. Those simple loyalty program in-centives may seem like a piece of plastic or cardboard on a box to you, but they are dollars for our community schools. In a day of reduced budgets and creative spending, those are the dollars that can really make a difference for our schools.

Profile

a senior by the name of Paul Marik is not just a good freestyle skier, he’s great. Two years ago, he com-

peted in the Midwest Open, taking first place in the rail jam and big air. “The Midwest Open was a regional contest that allowed skiers from all over Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Min-nesota, and even some parts of Canada to come together and compete against each other,” Paul said. “The events in-cluded Big Air and Rail Jam, for both skiers and snowboarders.” Paul is sponsored by Les Moise, K2 Skis, Full Tilt and Orage Outerwear. You can see Paul riding and represent-ing these companies in the parks all over Wisconsin. Paul started skiing at the age of 5 and was influenced by his dad’s skiing. He didn’t start out trying tricks right away. Tricks came to Paul at the age of 12 when he watched a few freestyle videos, which drove him to learn some tricks. “The adrenaline after landing a new trick is very addictive,” Paul said. “It’s a way for me to just escape and have a good time with good friends.” Since the age of 12, Paul has learned

quite a bit. Now he throws down tricks like a switch bio 10 (taking off backwards, doing a backflip while spinning three rota-tions) and a switch double rodeo ten (tak-ing off backwards, 2 rodeos, which is simi-lar to a sideflip, while spinning three rota-tions). “Paul is an impres-sive skier who has been skiing his whole life.” senior Nathan Gunderson said. “He has an innate ability to make freestyle skiing look easy and simple, when in reality it is an arduous feat. I have only seen Paul ski in person once when he brought me on my first time skiing. Being the avid skier he is, he was having me go off jumps in no time.”

Of course you have to push your-self to get good and, unfortunately, things can go wrong every now and then. Paul had a compression fracture in his back. The compression fracture in his back happened when he fell on an 80 foot jump this past season. He also fractured his heal by landing flat by over shooting a jump.

Even with these injuries, Paul will con-tinue to ski this year and for years to come. “Filming is one of my top priorities.” Paul said. “I hope to continue making ski edits, which will hopefully help me get more well known in the industry. I plan on moving out to Utah to at-tend college and to enjoy the outdoors. Along with the filming, I will be com-peting in local events and stay involved in the industry.”

shine a Light

not many people know of Brandon Mccartney, also known as Lil B “THE BASEDGOD”. Some may

have heard of him through many inter-net photographs that say “Thank You Based God.” Others may actually know him through his music. I’m going to shed some light on the BasedGod. Lil B started his rapping career when he was 16 years old. He joined a rap group known as “The Pack”. Lil B and The Pack put out a song that became popular enough to noticed by Rolling Stone magazine. Soon after, Lil B the BasedGod distanced himself from The Pack and started making solo mixtapes and singles. As of 2010, Lil B had put out over 1,000 songs and many mixtapes and continues to release more to this very day. To this day, Lil B has put out 46 mixtapes since 2007. I would say at this point, Lil B has released over 3,000 songs. How does he have so many songs, you may ask? Lil B the BasedGod has so much time to work on mixtapes and can put them out in a short time. Not only does he put so many out, he also puts a lot of hard work and effort into them. “Wonton Soup” , “Like A Martian” , “Cook Steak Knife” , and “Ellen Dege-neres” are some of Lil B’s most popular songs. I would say Lil B the BasedGod mainly became somewhat famous through so-cial media. Back when MySpace was relevant, Lil B would put out mixtapes almost each week on his page and he

had many friends through the site. Today the Based God runs a Twitter page (@LILBFROM-THEPACK) and tweets either links to his new YouTube vid-eos or random tweets. He also makes sure to retweet things that his followers have to say about him. Not only does the BasedGod run a Twitter account, he also runs an Ins-tagram account and a Facebook page, although those aren’t used as often as his Twitter is. Some question as to why Lil B calls him-self “The BasedGod.” Lil B only calls himself the BasedGod because he says he has changed the “rap game.” Some question as to why he is “Based” and what it means to be “Based”. Lil B has said that being Based means being true to yourself and speaking your mind. It is basically being yourself and being posi-tive to others while showing no signs of negativity. Lil B is basically calling him-self the ultimate individual when he calls himself the BasedGod and it’s true. He’s completely different from other rappers. Some of his songs are full on “trap mu-sic” which is just a form of rap than is

completely different that mainstream rap music; some are a bit more calm, and he even has a rock song called “California Boy” that fully deviates from the tradi-tional rap genre. Some say Lil B’s music is bad. I dis-agree; he does have some somewhat unlikeable tracks out there (about two or three) but overall most of his songs are pretty catchy. He’s not signed to any ma-jor music label, but his songs sound as if they’re coming straight from a full on professional company. Lil B’s music just takes some time to adjust to. You need to be exposed to him for quite sometime before you can truly enjoy it and become Based. Lil B is a good person who has good ideas when it comes to peace and harmo-ny and could motivate others to change the world. Behind the rap and the social media lies a man who is ultimately Based.

There are some concerns about this year regarding injuries, but girls basketball players are ex-pecting to finish stronger than

last year. Last year, Fondy Girls Basket-ball was successful by ending the season with fourteen wins and 9 losses. There were several opportunities for the girls to improve their basketball skills in the off season. “I went to open gyms, weight lifting ,” senior Kelsey Schneider said. “I did the Y League in the summer.” “We have open gyms all summer, league, and working during the summer to im-prove their game,” Coach Follis said. There will be strong competition this year for the Fondy Girls. According to ju-nior Nicole Gietzel, Kimberly is the team

to beat. “They always have a good team,” she said. Along with the excitement of starting a new season, there is also some concerns about this year. “There aren’t many upperclassmen this year, so our team is going to be young,” junior Nicole Gietzel said. “We have a lack of varsity experience,” Coach Follis said. “Players should come to practice with a great attitude and de-sire to work hard and get better each practice.” Brianna Wagner, a senior who was first team all conference last season, has recently recovered from an ACL injury from last year’s basketball season. She has also played on varsity since she was

a sophomore. She is now able to play to start out this season. “I think playing at a higher level younger gets you more experience when you get older,” senior Brianna Wagner said. “It teaches you to push yourself and work hard to be like the older people that I looked up to as a sophomore. My biggest fear would be tearing my ACL again and not playing at the same level I did prior to getting hurt.” The first game of the season for Fondy Girls Basketball is on Friday, November 29. The game is at home against Waukesha Catholic Memorial. “I’m excited about being together with my team for one more year,” senior Kelsey Schneider said.

boys basketball The Fond du Lac high school basket-ball team finished the 2013 season with a 12-12 record, including a first round nail-biting playoff win against Neenah and a second round loss to Stevens Point. This year’s team has high expectations to build off of their first round win last year, and make it even further this year. This year’s team is only returning five players from last year’s team that will be seniors this year (Joe Schorse, Danny So-salla, Quincy Armon, Jared Quimby, and Matt Dilling). “Offensively we will rely on the returning players from last sea-son,” Head Coach Adam Zakos said. Even though this team does not have as much veteran experience returning as it usually does, it has an enormous amount of raw talent. ¨I compare our level of talent to an NBA all-star team, because we are all all-stars in my mind,¨ Senior Joe Schorse said. This team has numerous players that will need to contribute in order for this team to make it to state, but there are four specific players that should have huge seasons. These players are Joe Schorse (senior); Brian Luteyn (junior); Quincy Armon (senior); Robert Wind-sor (junior); Danny Sosalla (senior); and Jared Quimby (senior). The Cardinals start off the season with a tough schedule including having to play Oshkosh North in the fourth game of the season. Their schedule does not get any easier from there. ¨I think we should be able to beat any team in the conference, but every game will be hard¨, senior Joe Schorse said. The Fox Valley Association is always a tough conference to play in, but barring any suspensions or injuries this team will finish 3rd in conference. ¨If we can make it to the sectional fi-nals, it is held in Fondy this year so hope-

fully we can make it that far and have a packed field house to give us a push into state,¨ senior Danny Sosalla said.

swimming Members of this year’s swim team said they expect to have a good season this year. The toughest competition in the conference is Appleton North and Appleton East because they have a very strong program.

“The 2013-2014 season will be one of the best yet,” senior Cameron Vanbeek said. “We have a lot of strong return-ing swimmers that will bring a lot to the team. In addition, our team will be dou-ble of what is was my freshman year.” Coach McBride said that swimming isn’t easy. “Half the guys on the team have been swimming for a long time,” Coach McBride said. “Cameron makes it look easy because he is All-State. After awhile it gets easier, the workouts won’t be as difficult.” “There are a lot of guys around the state just like me that are swimming year round in preparation for an intense sea-son,” Senior Cameron Vanbeek said.

WrestlingWrestling has officially started here at fondy. This season it seems like we have more team members going to state. Open practice started on November 18, but there was open mat workout . This

year there are some returning faces and some veteran guys who ended up leav-ing. “They will regret it when they are older, but it’s difficult to get a teenager to understand it,” Coach Rens said about the veteran wrestlers who left. “ Wres-tling is not easy, otherwise everybody would be doing it. u gotta be a special person. I’m pleased with the guys we got and will work hard to toughen’ them up.” According to Coach Rens, Josh Ad-

ams, a Sophomore here at Fond du Lac high school has shown that he deserves a shot at the state title. Josh Tosher, a Junior this year, was a state qualifier last year. Rafael Rodriguez, a senior who has been wrestling for four years , is one of the hardest workers out there.

hockey The boys varsity hockey team has played four games so far this season with two wins and two losses. “The team will defiently have some wins and losses this year with it being a rookie team,” Coach Ryan Sarazin said. “But, I think the guys will step up and try and get the wins we need.” An update on Jack Nejedlo, he’s start-ed to get skate, but is not ready to play games yet. His leg is getting stronger and

stronger with each day and the rehab. The team is still figuring out how to make beter plays and score more points. They are learning each others strengths and weaknesses with every game.

“I compare our level of talent to an NBA all-star team, because we are all all-stars in my mind.”

Jack Nejedlo has started toskating again.

E Q UA L I T YREDEFINEDA Four-Word Amendment Sends Citizens Flocking to City Hall

On Monday, Nov. 28, the city council chambers were alive, buzzing with an excitement,

an anticipation: the seating of the entire room at max capacity; an ex-cess of people lined the back walls by the dozens. On the opposite side of the wall sat Fond du Lac’s seven councilman: President Samuel Meyer, Dan Manning, Gary Miller, Catherine Block, Lee Ann Lorrigan, Karyn Merkel and Brian Foster. All seven of these faces seemed to poised with a precautionary sense of dread, some-how aware of the grueling and emo-tional the battle that would last more than three hours before their very eyes would be. However, one face seemed to be strained more than the rest, and that face was of Dan Man-ning, the first openly gay member of the city council. After all, Man-ning was the reason more than one hundred people were in attendance and seventy-five of them came to voice their opinions on a four-word amendment regarding housing equal-ity for transgender people. Every ten years the Fond du Lac City Code is up for recodifica-tion. This year newly elected coun-cilman Dan Manning proposed an amendment to ordinance 3535 or Fair Housing. This amendment would al-low for the words “Gender Identity or Expression” to be inserted into

the clause that gives other reasons for which an individual cannot be discriminated against. In a 5-1 vote, this amendment was rejected, with Catherine Block abstaining from the vote. This decision did not come as a surprise to many, as President Samuel Meyer had held a special meeting to deal with the amendment rather than allowing the public more time to be-come informed. However, the true story of the amendment is not simply the vote that overturned it but the im-passioned emails received by each of the councilmen, the citizens of Fond du Lac who attended the meet-ing to have their voices heard and the groups involved in polarizing the event. It was a night of theatrics, of whimsical rhetoric and a testament of the ability of people, both young and old, to care about the realm of local politics. “I think Fond du Lac has come a long way since previous years,” said Vicente Lezama, an openly gay student who graduated from Fond du Lac High School last year. “I’m just happy topics like this are concerning to the Fond du Lac community.” Several Fond du Lac students and alum came to the meeting, in-cluding several members of the GSA led by Ms. Struck, who was aware of

the likelihood of the amendment fail-ing; she even acknowledged that she would be in the minority of those who supported the amendment at the meeting. (Though nearly the same amount of people spoke for the amendment as those who did against it, the people who chose not to speak but opposed the amendment nearly tripled those who supported it and chose not to speak.) She attributes the failure of the amendment to the lack of education in the community on the issues, but Ms. Struck wasn’t the only one disappointed. “My experience was enlight-ening, but not in the way that I had hoped,” said senior Anna Tursky, who attended the city council meet-ing hoping to see a win for equal-ity. “Of course, I was disappointed in the council’s decision, but I was shocked by the hateful, ignorant and incendiary remarks made by many of the amendment’s opponents. While I believe some of them were simply confused or uninformed, others were clearly trying to scare people away from the issue at hand.”The remarks Anna could have been referring to were several people who took the podium claiming to be scared by issues regarding public facilities such as bathrooms. Even councilman Gary Miller asked the city attorney if he was dressed like

Tanvi KumarEditor-in-Chief

Page 12: Cardinal Columns (December 2013)

a woman would he be allowed to access the women’s bath-room. To that city attorney responded, “It would probably depend on how convincingly you were dressed.” In a meeting that mostly dealt with housing, the general voice of opposition referenced bathrooms and locker rooms several times, arguing that they did not want this amendment to justify sexual assault. One woman who took the podium even said that though she did not believe all transgenders to be perverts, she did not want sexual predators to hear of this amendment and start flocking to Fond du Lac. This concern was also raised on Wisconsin Family Ac-tion Website. Among other concerns on the website include the fact that churches would not be exempt from this ordi-nance and that they too would be forced to allow transgender individuals housing. The WFA also argues that rather than pre-venting discrimination the amendment would allow for it by endangering innocent women and children. And while the opposi-tion has a hard set list of rea-sons of why they are opposed, many of the supporters of the amendment do, too -- beyond just the reasoning that “it is the right thing to do.” In a let-ter to the city council, Haruka Yukioka writes about how the addition of the words “gender identity or expression” would bolster the image of Fond du Lac in the eyes of businesses who may want to locate to Fond du Lac and thus improve the economy. “I’m incredibly displeased,” she said. “The final vote, with only Mr. Manning voting for the proposal, was disap-pointing for so many reasons. The fact that the council listened and gave in to the pressures of undereducated, overfwwunded national groups showed the cowardice of the people who are elected to serve a city of 40,000. Unrelated but pertinent-the fact that young kids, freshmen only 14 and 15, had to hear peo-ple say things like ‘you should have committed suicide because people like you don’t deserve to live’ and ‘you’re all perverts, and the women and children of this community need to be protected’ (sexism and so many other issues) was heartbreak-ing to me. The gall of these people to tell minors these things was incredibly unbelievable.” Haruka is just one of several youth who feel very strongly on the issue. In fact, one of the highlight speakers of the entire meeting was Sarah Kragness, Fond du Lac High School alum. “As someone in this community, living in this commu-nity, I’ve given back a lot,” said Kragness, “and I’m a lesbian. I’d hope my community would be progressive enough to rep-resent my well being.” “And just because I have extra time I’m going to go into this

part. I know it’s really confusing understanding sex and gen-der,” she said before elevating her voice, “Sex is in your pants. Gender is in your head.” At this point city council president, Samuel Meyer, told Kragness to keep her voice down and not yell. Kragness continued speaking in a more normal tone of voice. “It’s all perceived. It’s all perceived. It’s a societal construction, and I think that needs to be known. I look androgynous. I don’t look like a woman, but guess what I am. I have a vagina.” “Ma’am please keep the profanity to a minimum,” inter-jected Meyer which led to a collective uproar from the audience. “That’s profane? Vagina is not profane. I’m sorry that’s my -- that’s what I have in my pants. That’s a biologi-cal term,” responded Kragness angrily. “I’m lucky enough -- I know I’m a woman because my gender and my sex align. Not everyone has that privilege. Not everyone is lucky enough to

live in that world. But that’s the reality.” Perhaps this debacle and a line spoken by one of the speak-ers at the meeting gets to the root of the real issue. “We are not liberal cities like Madison or Milwaukee. Fond du Lac is a very conservative city.” In a town where claims were made that

saying that ten percent of the population is homosexual is a “gross exaggeration” or anatomical parts on a woman’s body are considered “profane” when uttered aloud, one must ask -- is Fond du Lac really ready to make such a monumental deci-sion? Even if the answer to this question is yes, the votes of the city council suggest otherwise. By the end of the night, and after 140 minutes of arguments from both sides, there was one man yet to be heard from--Dan Manning. Over the course of the evening Manning had been applauded, told to step down from his position, criticized for being gay and questioned for his motives. “As a result of this ordinance before us I’ve been called names,” said Manning, “It has been suggested that I am simply returning political favors for gay rights groups that have supported me.” And it was Manning who had the final say after the councilmen explained their reasoning for why the were against the amendment or felt it was unnecessary. Manning had only one response. “Fear holds us back. Scare tactics hold us back.” He ended the night with the following closing remarks. “It’s time that we take our stand and that we do our duties,” said Manning. “It’s time for us to be leaders. I hope you’ll be joining me in taking a stand for them. Some things -- the right things -- are worth it.”

“Sex is in your pants. Gender is in your

Jenna Rosenthal has come very far in the past few years. In eighth grade, on her first game she was going

to serve the ball, all the parents were watching and she had stepped over the line on the floor and fell over. This for her, is her most embarrassing moment while playing. The idea of a student athlete--the good grades, working hard and doing what they love-- is what really inspires Jenna Rosenthal. The bouncy, energetic ath-lete who loves doing what she does has signed a full ride scholarship for volley-ball to her dream school of Marquette. Jenna, a Senior volleyball player here at Fond du Lac high school received a full-ride scholarship to Marquette. Jenna had fallen in love with volleyball

when she went to a high school game, in Eighth. Her first impression was that it was so cool and she liked the pre-sentation. She started playing out of wonder. She has played volleyball for the schools since middle school when everyone started playing, but it wasn’t until she reached 16 when she realized that if she wanted to do better so joined off season and club leagues. “Leadership - verbally and through her actions,” Coach Santry said. “A very skilled offensive and defensive weapon. A lot of our matches came down to big points and we would rely on Jenna to perform in some very stressful situations (and she always performed well).” Her best moment while playing was

when Bond Shymansky, Marquette coach, came to watch them one day.The whole game she played awesome and made a really hard hit for the point. Jenna had gone to Marquette’s camp when the coach, Bond Shymansky had called her mother and her into his of-fice and told her that she wouldn’t be leaving the camp without an offer. She didn’t hesitate with an answer and she had surprised him because he didn’t expect the answer right away, but she knew that if he of-fered her one she would say yes right away. “It was one of the happiest days of my life so far, because everyone tells you that you need to worry about col-lege, and now I don’t have too and I get to play the sport I love,” said Jen-na. When she is on the court she doesn’t know how it happens but her feet will get her to jump and waiting for the ball, while waiting she can see all of the openings on where to put the ball. Also being 6’5’’ helps a lot too. Not only will she be playing volleyball at Marquette but she will also be going for engineering. “My biggest support is my mom,” said Jenna. “She drives me to prac-tices, listens to how practice went and says it will be okay, makes dinner as I walk out the door. I wouldn’t be able to do it without her.” “Technically I’ve been only playing volleyball competitively since sopho-more year, just playing school volley-ball is not competitive,”Jenna said. Teammate Makenna Mitchell is ex-cited to see Jenna go play at Marquette. “I know she will go far in life.” Teammate Makenna Mitchell said. “She is an incredible person and stu-dent. I wish her the best. She better tell me when her games are because I am going to go watch her kill it at Marquette!”

catching Fire: the biggest hit of 2013?Could this critically acclaimed sequel knock Iron Man 3 of it’s pedestal?Tatiana Bell // Entertainment Editor

I would be lying if I said it’s not surprising that The Hun-ger Games: Catching Fire had such a big opening over its weekend release, making

$158.1 million worldwide and al-most beating the 174.1 million of Iron Man 3. Over the five days of Thanksgiving weekend, Catching Fire continued to break records, topping The Twilight Saga: New Moon’s record for highest weekend debut in November. It also broke the record set in 2001 by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for highest overall 5-day Thanksgiving weekend total. As of December 4, Catching Fire has already earned the same amount in the box office as The Hunger Games when it ended its run, and it would be no surprise if the film surpassed the billion-dollar mark before the end of the month. Also, while it was breaking records, Catching Fire received acclaim from critics and audiences alike, earning a “fresh” 89% from Rotten Tomatoes and paving the way for the two-part release of Mockingjay. Unfortunately, despite its over-whelmingly positive reception from audiences, the highly-anticipated film received a few negative reviews (when does a movie not?). Before the end of its opening weekend, the science fic-tion adventure film was criticized for the slightly overlong runtime and the

fact that the screenplay and direction occasionally run short, causing dull or slow moments in the film. I do not believe any of these reviews, and I’m probably not the only person who thinks that the film went by very fast because it was very easy to get caught up in what was happening. Even if you haven’t read the books, it’s not difficult to get wrapped up in what is happening with our main characters and the world that they live in. Aside from the obvious ele-ments of Catching Fire that make it a huge success among its fans (we get it, Jennifer Lawrence is great), there are others that are hard to ignore (like the use of the special effects), and the best of those were brought to life on the big screen by Sam Claflin and Jena Malone. Twenty-seven year-old Eng-lish actor Sam Claflin, who portrays the charismatic (not to mention handy with a trident) Finnick Odair from District 4, first started acting in 2010 as Richard in the Starz mini series The Pillars of the Earth and became a breakout star for his supporting roles in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Snow White & the Huntsman. Twenty-nine year-old indie-darling Jena Malone stars as Johanna Mason, a tribute from District 7 who is best known for her sarcastic and rebellious nature (includ-ing her deadly, if not always precise, use of an axe) and makes a very memo-rable first impression in Catching Fire

when she strips down in front of Kat-niss, Peeta, and Haymitch in an eleva-tor. Jena Malone, who has not had a memorable role since her portrayal of Mary in the 2004 film Saved! opposite Macaulay Culkin, proves herself once again as a successful actress, her role as Johanna being the complete opposite of Mary and showing the depths of her talent. While I have to admit that I think Catching Fire was absolutely fantstic, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t a few shortcomings. First is Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee. Although Hoffman is a highly-acclaimed actor (he was re-cently nominated for the best sup-porting actor Academy Award for his role in the 2012 film The Master), even his own talent couldn’t save his ineffective performance as the Head Gamemaker following the execution of Seneca Crane. Throughout the film, Hoffman’s performance makes it seem like he is being force-fed lines (much like Katniss and Peeta’s speeches to the districts), and his fa-cial expressions range from well, let’s face it, the fact that he sticks with the same expression throughout the en-tire film makes it look like he’s frozen from too much plastic surgery (which isn’t that hard to imagine since his character lives in the Capitol). Sec-ond is Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy. As the victor of the 50th

Page 17: Cardinal Columns (December 2013)

cardinal columns.org dcember 2013 | 16

who had to deal with President Snow’s torture through the murder of his mother, younger brother and girlfriend, Harrelson’s portrayal of the character in The Hunger Games was comical at best and under-standing when you consider all of the trauma he went through. Going against fifty-one tributes in the sec-ond Quarter Quell of the Hunger Games and losing his loved ones will do that to a person. Unfortu-nately, Harrelson’s performance as the middle-aged drunk is almost as one-note as Hoffman’s as Heav-ensbee. He doesn’t bring anything new to the roll, instead going along

with the motions as he tries to keep Katniss and Peeta from causing trouble during their victory tour (ex: Katniss’s transforming wed-ding dress) and spending his down time (no surprise here) drinking. Aside from using the drinking as a coping mechanism, he’s basically slowly killing himself in an effort to get out of being forced to mentor tributes and to no longer be seen as an example of what happens when you defy the Capitol. So, despite a few shortcomings, Catching Fire has proved to be an excellent adaptation of the book, and director Francis Lawrence (no

relation to Jennifer) was obviously worthy of the job. And so begins the year-long wait for the first part of the final book (and the first appearance of Jennifer Lawrence playing Katniss while wearing a wig) and the two-year wait before the franchise will be over and film companies will have to find the next teen-targeted one to replace it. Let the waiting begin, and remem-ber: the odds of waiting for a film sequel aren’t always in your favor. In the meantime, get your next Jen-nifer Lawrence fix as she portrays loose cannon housewife, Roselyn Rosenfeld, in American Hustle.

The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary

an adventure in space and time

Caitlyn Oestreich // Staff Writer

On November 23, 1963 a sci-fi television program called “Doctor Who” aired. A man called the Doctor and his grand-daughter, Susan, and Susan’s two school teachers Barbara and Ian started the time and space adventures 50 years ago. The Doctor is a Time Lord from Gal-lifrey who travels around in a spaceship disguised as an old police telephone box called a TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space), which makes him able to travel through time and space. “An Adventure In Time and Space,” a television docudrama, is based off of how the show started and the events that happened during the production such as the assassination of President Kennedy on November 22, the day before the first episode aired. As those 50 years pass by, “Doctor Who” has starred 11 Doctors, 74 com-panions, seven TARDIS, eight sonic screwdrivers, 487 different galaxies and planets and 800 episodes. It is the lon-gest running sci-fi television program in the world. The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary had over 3.6 million viewers the day that it aired, which is about 2% of the world’s population. It starts with Clara’s first day as a teach-er where she receives a message from the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) to meet

her at the TARDIS. When she arrives, they are both sud-denly airlifted by helicopter and the Doctor calls Kate Stewart and he nearly falls out. The episode continues on from where they are put back onto the ground and showed to an art gallery where instruc-tions from his wife Queen Elizabeth I, which declares that he’s the curator of the Undergallery, a secret vault of for-bidden art housed at the National Gal-lery. As proof that it is from Elizabeth, the Doctor is shown one of many works of 3-D Time Lord paintings called stasis cubes: a depiction of the Arcadia on the last day of the Time War whose title is either No More or Gallifrey Falls. Soon after seeing the painting, and oth-er 3-D paintings that were hidden, a por-tal opens and the Doctor jumps through to see his past incarnation, the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) with Queen Elizabeth herself. Throughout the episode the Doctor deals with Zygons, aliens that can trans-form their shape, and his “hidden” in-carnation, the War Doctor (John Hurt) who was the original cause of the mass genocide of the Time Lords, but the end of the great Time War. As the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors are

figuring stuff out, the War Doctor steals a weapon of mass destruction called “The Moment,” a “galaxy eater” which would destroy both the Time Lords and their enemies in the war, the Daleks. The Moment has a conscience and takes the shape of past companion of the Ninth and Tenth Doctors, Rose Ty-ler (Billie Piper) and is only able to be seen by the War Doctor and gives him hints throughout the episode of him de-ciding whether or not to use the weapon. The episode is full of wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey stuff, name calling between the three Doctors, a few heartfelt mo-ments between both friends and enemies alike, and the result of three great minds working together instead of letting the fate fall into the hands of one person. Several plot holes that have been made between the reboot of the series in 2005 to present episodes were either opened more or closed, which caused great relief yet more frustrations for fans of the show. For being around for 50 years, Doctor Who is one of those shows that are just unforgettable. William Hartnell, the First Doctor, said a long time ago that Doc-tor Who was going to be a show that ran forever, and ever, and ever, and so far, with or without the hiatus, it has.

K anye West has done it. He has made one of the best hip-hop albums of the year. When Yeezus released on July 18, 2013, many people were turned off by what Kanye

had to offer. The song “On Sight” is most likely what got peo-ple to not enjoy this album. However, now that some time has passed since the album dropped, people enjoy the album. Some say it’s one of the best albums Kanye has put out. It’s been reported that Kanye was going an “acid house,” “Chica-go Drill” and “avant-rap” sound when he was putting Yeezus together. He was also listening to Death Grips and Odd Future for some inspiration when he was developing Yeezus. Yeezus definitely has a different sound when you compare it to older Kanye albums. Kanye West worked with other famous musicians when he worked on the tracks on Yeezus. On the songs “On Sight,” “Black Skinhead” “I am a God” and “Send it Up,” Kanye West

teamed up with the electronic music duo Daft Punk in order to produce the songs. There’s also some other musicians that are featured in West’s songs on Yeezus. Frank Ocean is heard at the end of “New Slaves,” Chief Keef is featured quite a bit in “Hold My Liquor” and Kid Cudi can be heard in the song “Guilt Trip.” Kanye West truly made sure to have some of the best people to help him in his songs. Overall, Yeezus is one of the best albums Kanye West has put out in sometime. The fact that the album is all over the place when it comes to sound makes it worth a listen. I would honestly give this album a perfect rating but in my opinion, it doesn’t deserve it. It deserves a solid 8. I think some of the songs were painful to listen to such as “Send It Up” and “Guilt Trip,” they were just not what I had originally expected from Kanye. Anyways, this album has a few flaws but is still worth the listen!

the mmlP2Reviewing Eminems “MMLP2”

the Marshall Mathers LP2 (MMLP2), the sequel to The Marshall Mathers LP released in May 2000, is Eminem’s eighth studio album. It was released on November 5th,

2013. Made and produced with Aftermath, Shady, and Inter-scope Records, MMLP2 began recording in March 2012 and resulted in 21 songs. The album varies between Eminem’s strong anger with a fierce voice to the sober rapper explaining his struggles to re-main unique in the rap world. Even though he has obviously continued to age and mature, Eminem has inevitably been stuck in his old ways. He has unfortunately been conforming to other rapper’s styles. Dr. Dre wasn’t seen often in the album, but instead there

is Rick Rubin. He is a pretty well-known rapper and pro-ducer, who gives the rock-rap instrumentals and feeling to a couple enjoyable songs like in “Bezerk.” “Love Game” featuring Kendrick Lamar is my least favorite song where I think the lyrics don’t match the music and it is not very likable. Eminem is speaking of a woman who was ignoring him and playing games; the song is a disappointment of what was expected in the new album, but is one of few. On the other hand, songs like “Rap God” are placing high on Billboard charts and helped Eminem place No. 1 with this new album and gave him his seventh consecutive No. 1 album. Overall, I give the album a four out of five star rating and would definitely recommend MMLP2.

a nime is what cartoons are for Americans. There are different genres of anime: comedy, drama,

action and horror are some of the most popular genres out there. People of many different countries enjoy anime and appreciate that the Japanese release so many anime shows. I will be review-ing two of my favorite anime series out there! Shin Seiki Evangerion, also known as Neon Genesis Evangelion, has been praised by many critics and has been considered one of the best anime series to date. It’s known for its themes, action, characters and plot. Many have claimed that the finishing episodes are some of the strangest episodes in any anime se-ries, mostly because the series takes a dark and serious tone after episode 15. Neon Genesis Evangelion is an anime from the mid-nineties that takes place in 2015 and focuses on the story of Shinji Ikari, who is forced to pilot a large ro-bot known as an “Eva” to combat aliens known as “Angels.” Along with Shinji, there are other pilots for the other Eva units. As they battle with the Angels, Shinji develops relationships and bonds with the people who he is forced to work with but still has a difficult relationship with his father, the leader of the organi-zation runs the Evangelion combat sys-tem. As the series goes on, Shinji eventu-ally has a breakdown and goes through a journey of the mind and questions his existence and if people even care about him. Basically every character in this show has some serious issues. Many

people have c r i t i c i z e d the series ending for not being a good con-clusion, so the origi-nal creator had put out a movie named End of Evan-gelion. The movie is ac-tually just a l ternat ive versions of episodes 25 and 26 and these episodes are considered some of the strangest anime episodes out there. But in my opinion, I think End of Evangelion perfectly shows how the series should’ve ended. The series ended in 1996, however the creators are still making films of the show. These films are considered to be a part of what is known as “Rebuild of Evangelion.” The Rebuild films are just recreations of the original series but with updated visuals and a somewhat differ-ent storyline. NGE 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone recaptures some of the earlier episodes with some added scenes. NGE 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance continues the story of 1.0 and recreates the earlier episodes and includes some extra scenes

as well. NGE 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, however completely takes a new turn and does not stick to the original episodes of the series. Its plot is completely differ-ent than that of the original series even though the same characters and themes are there. The NGE Rebuild Final is scheduled to release sometime soon. It would not only conclude the story but also the Rebuild movie series. I really enjoyed watching Neon Gen-esis Evangelion. The episodes in the be-ginning are a bit slow but besides that the show is great. I can understand why this show is so popular and why they are continuing to make films for it. I would highly recommend Neon Genesis Evan-gelion to anybody who’s willing to watch

shingeki No Kyojin, also known as Attack on Titan, has gotten extremely popular among many

people. It is known for it’s story, the ac-tion and the characters. It’s also full of suspense, action, blood and character development. . Attack on Titan is a recent anime that focuses on people fighting back against giants that threaten what’s left of the human race. After the giants, also known as “Titans”, mysteriously appear, most humans are eaten. What’s left of the humans seal themselves in a city that’s protected by a 50-meter wall. This manages to keep all Titans at bay for about 100 years but one day an ex-tremely massive Titan is able to break down the exterior walls. Doing that it lets all smaller Titans enter the cities and kill some of the people living there. The story focuses on a character named Eren who wants revenge on the Titans for destroying everybody’s way of life and for killing his mother. Eren joins a group of people who work to-gether to get rid of all Titans. The peo-ple are split into military groups. Each group has a specific goal; one focuses on watching the walls and making sure Titans don’t get in again; another pro-tects people of high nobility; one goes outside the walls and stops any Titans’ they may come across and the last one acts as a police force within the walls of the cities. The ones who go out beyond the walls kill the Titans by using some-thing known as the 3D Maneuver Gear which allows them to get to the Titans weak spot, a large growth in the back of their neck. Overall, Attack on Titan has proven to be one of the better animes of the year. I would go into more de-tail, but in all fairness, I wouldn’t want to spoil any big developments in this show. I will say that there’s some humor in earlier episodes but most of the epi-sodes are mainly dramatic and serious. Overall, this is one of the best pieces of Japanese animation I’ve seen in quite a while. There’s basically nothing that I disliked in this show, everything was just perfect. The animation in the show

was great, the characters were memo-rable, the story is decent, the music was fantastic, just everything in this show was great. I honestly think Shingeki No Kyojin/Attack on Titan deserves a 10 out of 10 for being great in all aspects. I can’t wait for season 2 of this show. I hope it will continue to be a great show to watch! I would definitely recommend this to anybody who wants to start watching something different!

In a society ruled by Hollywood, it’s hard to not want what every-one else seems to be searching for--love. Teenage relationships are

everywhere: on movie screens, hit tele-visions shows and in every high school hallway. It’s not unusual to see a sixteen-year-old couple clinging to each other during the waves of passing time here at Fond du Lac High School. Teenage “love” is in every corner of our halls and every classroom. But what we don’t see is the 33% of teenagers (loveisrespect.org) that live in a relationship filled with fear. We don’t see the lamps smashing against bed-room walls, the thirty text messages within an hour or the early morning bruise-covering process that so many kids our age drown in every day.

The dating violence tumor has its home here at Fondy High, just as it does in every other high school nationwide. A current senior, name kept anonymous for obvious reasons, writes: “(he was) Always on me. I had no idea. Nothing could have prepared me for the hurri-cane he incited, the earthquakes he used to tear down my emotional foundations, the floods he called upon to wash away any self-worth. I didn’t know what I had gotten myself into.” Nearly 1.5 million high school stu-dents report experiencing some form of dating violence within a single year. A tenth of students nationwide have been beaten by a lover, and more than a quarter of all high school students are currently a victim of physical, sexual, emotional and/or verbal abuse from

their partner (cdc.gov). Teenage dating abuse is nothing short of an epidemic. Yet, unlike a disease, real dating abuse gets very little air time. After a quick lesson in health class and a visit from ASTOP, the subject is pushed to the back of most minds. In some circles, mentioning something like dat-ing abuse is considered taboo and un-reasonable. This is why, according to researchers for the educational group Women Helping Women, only a third of victims report their abuse within the statute of limitations (or the limited time after a crime a victim has to report it and bring it to court). In fact, 56% of those victims report experiencing dat-ing abuse through social media, making it nearly impossible to bring up charges. This needs to change.

Cyber bullying, scared parents and suppressed imagination: That is what this great nation with all of the new technology is coming

to. With the increase of technology and culture changes, our youth are get-ting changed dramatically. Most people depend on technology and the internet when it comes to ev-eryday things. It does have good ad-vantages and bad. With the increase of technology us-age, and the drastic culture changes, children aren’t really guided as they used to be. Parents for the most part don’t know what’s going on with their children anymore. “As a parent, I resent those people who are helicopter parents who do ev-erything for their kids and don’t teach them to speak up for themselves,” English teacher Mr. Poquette said. “As a teacher, it would also be beneficial for students to speak up for them-selves more frequently. As a parent, it is difficult to watch my children make mistakes or learn things the hard way, but I know that telling or warning them about everything is not the same

as letting them learn through experi-ence.” Parenting is a hit or miss situation. Most parents hate seeing their kids upset when they discipline them, but there needs to be a better way to get into that perfect medium. “I do not agree with the parenting styles because there is no discipline anymore,” senior Skylar Lucas said. “No ones cares, they just take away electronics instead of teaching us a lesson. Kids will never learn if you just take away an item, then they just find other ways to maneuver around that punishment you gave them. When I was growing up a good smack told me that that was wrong, and you shouldn’t do it again and if you do I hope you have some bandages ready for the ramifications of your actions.” There are also bad influences when having the internet in education. With the internet also being in schools, it is more likely for students to goof off more than they would with-out it. Also, since we have chrome-books in our school now, we have no need for written papers. Cursive writ-ing is one of the things that typing has killed. Most kids nowadays don’t even

know how to read or write in cursive. We learn about things much faster with the use of the internet. Instead spending two days at the library, we can just spend three minutes online, and we can find the same info. But along with that, most people don’t know how to properly source things from a book. “I think that the effect of technol-ogy on education will be both negative and positive,” senior Maria Bullock said. “With technology, children have a better opportunity to explore the world and gather more up to date in-formation. It also helps many children who prefer hands-on learning, learn in a more effective way. However, many children will take advantage of the technology and become distracted in classes. Children will also lose op-portunities we had such as writing skills, and being able to read out of a book. But as always, with time comes change.”

There will always be good points and bad points to using technology; whether it is to use for school or to just check your facebook, it will al-ways have some sort of controversy to it.

Dear Charlie Cardinal,Why in Sports do coaches choose the player before

tryouts? Why don’t seniors automatically get varsity?

-That Hockey GuyDear That Hockey Guy,In all reality, even if you are a senior you don’t auto-

before coaches know your strengths and weakness.

You still have to prove to him that you belong in that

Dear Charlie Cardinal,

What actually happened on November 22, 1963?

-Joe

Dear Joe,

From November 16 to November 22, Billboard’s number

one song was, Deep Purple by Nino Tempo & April Stevens.

Troll Dolls were all the rage. Dodgers won the World Series,

Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup, Chargers won the AFL

championships. Bears won the NFL Championships. Celt-

ics won the NBA championships. Hotties and Fashion Icons

were, Elizabeth Taylor, Jayne Mansfield, Audrey Hepburn,

Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren, Doris Day, Annette Funicello,

and Kim Novak. Oh yeah, and “From Dallas, Texas, the flash,

apparently official ... President Kennedy died at 1 p.m. Cen-

tral Standard Time 2:00 Eastern Standard Time,”- said Walter

Cronkite. John F. Kennedy was some major president I guess I

don’t know.

Hope this helped!

-Charlie Cardinal

Dear Charlie Cardinal,How do I obtain Swag?

-SwagmasterDear Swagmaster,You seem to already possess swag, but

I can understand why you would want

others to know. It is my understanding

that to obtain swag you must be born

with it. You have snapbacks and tat-

toos, all that because cash rules. You

must hold yourself to a higher standard

than anyone else. Wear baggy pants

and/or skinny jeans. Crew necks are a

must, and some Air Jordan shoes. Good

Luck!!!!-Charlie Cardinal

Miley Cyrus is no Hil-ary Duff, talk about a two-faced actor;

playing on a Disney Chan-nel TV show and starring in a movie on Disney Channel, and then swinging on a ball half na-ked. The nation got a smack in the face with her performance at VMAs. As if our teen’s didn’t have enough bad influences for their parents to worry about, now there’s Miley. What happened to the Miley in the Disney show? Which I almost forgot to mention she starred in with her dad who now hates her. No wonder he hates her. Oh let’s see, blam-ing him for her parents split up when really it was the moms fault. Telling the news that the rela-tionship in the tv show was just on the set. Which was a bald face lie I must add. Billy keeps trying to make his daughter out to be an angel, and she keeps bad mouthing and mak-ing herself look like an idiot. Everyone knows her parents are just staying together for Miley. They care about her that much they are trying to work things out and Miley points all the blame to her dad, who she use to call her best friend. The definition of immature should be changed to Miley Cyrus’s name. Serious-

ly, posting video’s of yourself in the shower? And then say-ing its good luck! And we all thought Mary Kate was bad balding her hair, but look at Miley’s hair. Talk about ugly. Her beautiful curly hair is now a baldness of boy. Talk about insecure about yourself. Shaving off your hair and wearing the slutiest clothes ever made. Where does she shop, a hook-er store? Or maybe she is going to be the next hooker. That would be even better..not. Only God knows what Miley is going to do next to ruin her life.

Well of course Miley Cyrus is no Hilary

Duff, they’re different people! Yes she is no longer with Disney but she’s not 18 anymore. She’s growing up and trying to find herself. I mean even in the movie Hannah Mon-tana is going through big changes in herself, resisting authority, trying to grow up. There are no set of rules at the VMAs; she still had everything covered up. Her father and mother are

more than likely not

divorc-ing be-c a u s e of her.

Miley’s dad was a big d r u g -

gie him-self back

in the day but he

grew up. Miley had to grow up with an already famous dad. She was always in the spotlight. Imagine growing up with a famous dad and a tv show that’s supposed to help kids learn, and she’s expected to be perfect. She cut her hair for locks of love. Also again she’s growing up. Maybe she doesn’t want her hair like that anymore. Emma Watson cut her and every-one loved it. Miley’s is just a pixie cut as well. It’s no secret Miley isn’t the sweet little girl she was with Dis-ney. The clothes? Have we all forgotten Madonna? The way a slutty girl dressed in the 90s compared to a nick-elodeon descent dressed girl! Miley is no different from any other celebrity. The only thing that ever changes is the names and faces. Everyone acts out of character. Miley did have a video where she was naked, yes but so did Katy Perry, Blink-1882. I support Miley Cyrus in all that she does. She’s growing up. She’s making mistakes and learning from them. She has done nothing wrong.
