This tradition has been maintained though the quality of the 70 teaching staff who support our 1600 students inboth the academic and sporting disciplines. Many of ourstaff are involved in coaching and advising internationalsports squads.

The degree programmes in the Cardiff School of Sportare structured to provide distinctive pathways which caterfor individual student interests and also serve to meet thevocational requirements of an expanding marketplace inthe fields of sport, recreation, dance education, fitnessand health.

Excellent sporting facilities ensure high quality delivery ofthe practical elements of the courses and the ethos ofsporting excellence is clearly reflected in the 300international performers from more than 30 differentsports whose names are displayed in the UWIC Hall ofFame. Furthermore, our student teams consistently winmajor championships in the British Universitiescompetitions.

Research Culture. According to the 2008 ResearchAssessment Exercise, 70% of the Cardiff School of Sport’sresearch has international impact with a quarter beingclassified as internationally excellent or world leading.

C Y N C O E D C A M P U SCardiff School of Sport and all its teaching and practicalfacilities are situated on the Cyncoed Campus. Thecampus is compact, friendly and within easy reach of localshops, Cardiff city centre and road and rail transport links.There are 520 single study bedrooms on the campus. Allrooms have high-speed, unlimited internet accessincluded in the halls fees. There are laundry facilities onsite. The Campus is served by the university bus serviceand Cardiff Bus. Students resident at Cyncoed are wellplaced to take advantage of the extensive sports andrecreational facilities located at the campus, including TheNational Indoor Athletics Centre, an indoor swimmingpool, Students' Union bar/disco, indoor tennis centre anda fitness suite.

E L I T E AT H L E T E S U P P O R T S C H E M E ( E A S S )The scheme is designed to provide sports science andlifestyle support for students who are involved in, andrepresent UWIC at the elite level within the BUSA orNational League programmes organised and promoted bythe UWIC Athletic Union.

The scheme is open to all students registered as a studentat UWIC. Team-based and individual athletes areaccommodated within the structure and can benefit fromappropriate support in the areas of:

S P O R T I N G C I T YMillennium Stadium - biggest undercover sports venue in Europevenue for rugby,football, motor sports, music and concerts. Venue for 2012 Olympic Games – hosting atleast eight football matches.

Cardiff Rugby Club (Cardiff Blues) – the Blues’ stadium is next to the MillenniumStadium both of which are built on the famous Cardiff Arms Park.

Cardiff City Football Club - A new 26000 seat stadium for the 2009/10 season

Welsh Institute of Sport (Sophia Gardens, Cardiff City Centre) – Welsh Institute ofSport (Sophia Gardens, Cardiff City Centre) – The Institute has close links with UWICproviding governance, funding, policy and sports science support to Welsh sport. Itprovides a venue for UWIC students to join appropriate national squads for training.

Cardiff International Sports Village – home to the new 50-metre, 10-lanecompetition swimming pool.

Glamorgan Cricket Club – Host to the Third Ashes Test between England andAustralia in 2009

Wales National Velodrome (Newport – 20 minutes) The Velodrome is one of only2 of its kind in the UK and forms part of the Newport International Sports Village; itfeatures 250 metre Siberian pine track.

Celtic Manor Golf Club - venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup and home of The CelticManor Wales Open, a European Tour event, The Celtic Manor Resort offers 3 world-class championship courses.

The undergraduate programmes offer some of the bestand most popular sport related courses in the UK. Thecourses are designed to meet current market needs andthe curricula are based on attractive mixes of theoreticalstudies, laboratory based work and practical workshops.Six undergraduate sport studies courses are offered:

BSc (Hons) Sport and Physical Education

BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science

BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching

BSc (Hons) Sport Development

BSc (Hons) Sport Conditioning, Rehabilitationand Massage

BSc (Hons) Sport Management

The School also offers a BA (Hons) Dance and BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science (Intercalated)

G E N E R A L C O U R S E I N F O R M AT I O N

Length - Three years full-time and up to seven yearspart-time

Sporting Profile - Applicants should normally have asports performance profile at, or equivalent to, countystandard in at least one sport.

Learning and Teaching - All the courses are modular innature and equate to 120 credit points in each year. Thecompulsory modules, undertaken by all students,underpin the research elements of the courses. Eachcourse has core modules that define the course andunderpin the learning outcomes. Additionally, on eachcourse, for most years of study, students may choose anumber of option modules that are aligned to theirprogramme. Each 20 credit module has a maximum contact time of 3-hours per week (approx 18 teaching hours per week)consisting of lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratorypractical session and practical coaching workshops.Students are expected to commit 100-hours study to eachmodule in the form of formal classes, directed study andassessment.

Assessment - The Cardiff School of Sport assessmentstrategies for each module vary to ensure that mostappropriate method is used for that area of study.Generally, the undergraduate modules are assessed by acombination of coursework submissions, presentationand examinations. Students who wish to obtain anhonours degree award will be expected to produce anIndependent Project or Enterprise Project (dependentupon programme of study) of not more than 10,000words in the final year.

Career Potential:This course prepares graduates to follow careers infitness instruction and health promotion, teaching andlecturing in primary, secondary and higher education,coaching, the leisure industry, sport science and in thefield of community sports development. Past graduateshave gone on to study physiotherapy, osteopathy,chiropractic and nursing; others have obtainedemployment coaching cricket in Australia, as a tennisprofessional for David Lloyd, as a strength andconditioning coach for Bristol Rugby Club, or joined theArmed Forces. The subjects studied and skills learnt givegraduates the opportunity to continue their education toMaster and Doctorate level or undertake a PGCE.

Course Content:The course focuses on the scientific basis of participationin exercise and performance in sport. The main thrust ofthe course is based on the disciplines of physiology,biomechanics and psychology and in measurementissues in sport and exercise science, notational analysisand adapted physical activity. In addition, Sport andExercise Science Students will follow a unique pathwaythroughout the 3 levels that focuses on interdisciplinaryand multidisciplinary aspects of Sport and ExerciseScience with a high level of vocational relevance andexperience. You will be given many opportunities todevelop your practical contextual knowledge in training,coaching and performance.

Career Potential:Our graduates follow careers in teaching/coaching, theleisure industry, sport science and community sportsdevelopment and also in recreation management and asnational and regional coaches. Past graduates haveobtained employment teaching, coaching gymnastics,soccer or trampolining, as fitness consultants andtrainers, as sports administrators or joined the ArmedForces or Police Service; others have undertaken furtherstudy in the areas of physiotherapy, sports massage,nursing and teaching. The subjects studied and skillslearnt will give you the opportunity to continue youreducation to Master and Doctorate level or to undertakea Postgraduate Certificate in Education.

Course Content:This course will allow you to effectively analyse andassess performance within sport and physical education.Once a wide foundation of knowledge relating toperformance and participation has been established inyear one, you have a very broad option selection in yeartwo and no compulsory taught modules in your final yearof study. You may apply your specialism in sports science,socio-cultural or philosophical disciplines to examine theneeds of the sports performer.

Career Potential:This course provides graduates with the skills andknowledge to work in sport conditioning, rehabilitation,sports massage or sports science settings. Graduatesobtaining the SPS Diploma will be equipped to seekemployment as sport massage practitioners. Additionalprofessional qualifications including, strength andconditioning, and exercise instruction / leadership will beavailable (at additional costs) to assist students who wishto gain entry on to the Register of Exercise Professionals;this will enable graduates to work within health andfitness clubs, in community leisure centres, sports injury /rehabilitation settings, as self-employed personal trainers,

in health promotion and exercise prescription. Othergraduate opportunities exist within sport science andcoaching; graduates will also be able to undertake furtherstudy at Masters or PhD level or complete a PGCE.

Course Content:The course is multi-disciplinary in nature building on theUniversity's strengths in sport science, sportperformance, health and sports massage. The programmecomprises modules shared with other sports-relatedcourses and others specifically designed for the courseincluding anatomy and physiology, strength andconditioning, and sports injuries and rehabilitation.Students are required to complete elements of clinicalpractice and a work placement.

Course Content:This course focuses on preparing you to apply anddisseminate your knowledge of sports developmentissues into local, regional and national sportsdevelopment contexts. It will also allow you to integrateand assimilate the knowledge, skills and experiencesgained into a thorough appreciation of the issues andoperational contexts of sports development.

Past graduates haveobtained employment in coaching in the UK and abroadin a variety of sporting contexts some examples of whichinclude football coaching in Adelaide, Australia, and inthe USA, Assistant Academy Manager for a championshipfootball club, rugby coaching in Singapore, multi-sportcoaching in Shanghai and swimming coaching in Wales.In addition graduates have found employment working assport development officers for local authorities andNational Governing Bodies, as fitness consultants andtrainers. The subjects studied and skills learnt will also

give graduates the opportunity to continue theireducation to Master’s Doctorate level or undertake a PostGraduate Certificate in Education

Course Content:The course focuses on the application and disseminationof knowledge in the practical coaching environment. Themain thrust of the course is based on the CoachingProcess allowing a major contribution from other keydisciplines, such as physiology, biomechanics,psychology, measurement issues in sport and exercisescience, performance analysis and adapted physicalactivity. These elements give the course a unique flavour.You will be given many opportunities to develop yourpractical and contextual knowledge in training, coachingand performance which will allow you to evaluate andmodify your own behaviour and that of performers in arange of sports. It will also enable you to appreciate therole of the professional coach and to understand thequalities needed to coach effectively.

Career Potential:Our graduates can follow careers in sport facilitiesmanagement, health and fitness management, sportmanagement consultancy, teaching and lecturing, sportsevent management, sports development and in localauthority sports departments. In addition, graduates canfollow management careers in other industry sectors, jointhe armed or uniformed forces, or set up their ownbusiness. The flexibility of the programme is one of its keystrengths with students being able to direct their study toprepare themselves for their chosen career path,particularly during the final year of their programme. As well as these employment options graduates canundertake postgraduate study including PGCE, MSc and MA.

Course Content:The course will develop the critical understanding,professional knowledge, skills and attitudes that you willneed to take up a managerial position in the fastexpanding sport management industry. Modules willfocus on sport management as an activity, the impact ofthat activity and on the underlying business principlesthat help to sustain and develop the sport industry. Youwill be expected to take part in practical sports.

Career Potential:There has been an increase in the range of careeropportunities in the field of dance in recent years, fed bythe increased demand for dance activity in a variety ofsettings. This is an exciting course designed to meetthose demands by preparing the skilled dancepractitioners of the future. As such the course willprepare students for a range of careers in the danceindustry, particularly dance performance work and thatwhich takes place in community and education settings.Career opportunities include; work as community andeducation dance practitioners, choreographers andperformers; dance project managers; dance developmentofficers, dance administrators; dance company educationofficers; and researchers.

Course Content:As the first degree programme in Dance in Wales, thecourse aims to develop you as a creative, reflective dancepractitioner with independent learning skills, giving youthe ability to apply your knowledge and understanding toa variety of contexts. A balance of academic andvocational studies provides the basis for teaching andlearning, with contemporary dance as the main focus forthe course. In examining contemporary dance practice 3strands and the interrelationship between them form thecore of studies i.e. dance theatre, community dance anddance education.

Common to those strands are the concepts of making andpresenting dance; and the dance infrastructure. Throughthe course students engage in developing theirknowledge, skills and understanding of these concepts
