Peace and all good things to you and yours as we arrive at the beginning of summer!

I am excited to share this summer issue of the Capuchin Journey, the second issue of 2015! The focus for this edition of our Journey is Ordination, the sacramental liturgy wherein Capuchin Franciscan Friars become priests. This focus is in keeping with Pope Francis’s declaration of the Year of Consecrated Life and our efforts to share the lived experiences of all of our brothers of the Province of St. Mary who are living a consecrated life following in the footsteps of St. Francis.

Ordination is an exciting event both for the friars being ordained and for the friars gathered to share in the liturgy, to honor and recognize the new priests in the brotherhood. And the liturgy celebrates the mystery and power of the Catholic Church and its relationship to the Divine, something we hope to share with you in this issue of the Capuchin Journey.

I am also pleased to share with you the announcement of our Capuchin Giving Societies, which recognize the gracious and generous contributions of some of our most devoted supporters. Our work serving the sick, the vulnerable, and the poor wherever they may be and whatever their situation depends on your continued commitment to that work. I cannot thank you enough!

I pray for your well-being and for the well-being of all you hold dear. May the God who sent his only Son to Earth to walk among us and teach us to offer our hand to any and all who need our help shower you with the peace and good will sung by Angels and the life indestructible promised in the person of Jesus Christ.

Faithfully in the Lord,

Fr. Francis Gasparik, O.F.M. Cap. Provincial Minister

ORDINATION CELEBRATION!

We are thrilled to honor three friars of the Province of St. Mary who recently completed their ordination ceremony, becoming priests of the Province: Fr. Victor Garcia, O.F.M. Cap., Fr. Erik Lenhart, O.F. M. Cap., and Fr. Michele Vricella, O.F.M. Cap. The ceremony was presided over by the Most Reverend John Corriveau, O.F.M. Cap., Bishop of Nelson, Canada.

The essential rite of the sacrament, the moment when a brother fully joins the priesthood is the laying on of hands by the presiding bishop and the prayer of consecration. The ceremony also involves the brothers to be ordained lying prostrate to acknowledge their unworthiness for the position and their dependence on God and the prayers of the Christian community.

The following pictures come from the recent Ordination ceremony held at Sacred Heart Church in Yonkers, NY.

For us as Franciscans, when we see the holiness in others, we’re inspired and challenged in our own faith. Joining the priesthood will be a way of encountering faith in a new light. - Fr. Michele Vricella, O.F.M. Cap.

How you first got involved with the Capuchins?

I grew up as part of the Sacred Heart Parish in Yonkers, New York, had Capuchin friars in grade school, and then went to Sacred Heart high school. When I was in the fourth grade, one of the friars asked me about becoming a priest or a brother. Now I didn’t grow up in an overly religious family, so at that time, I simply said I wasn’t interested. But his question planted a seed and by the end of fourth grade I had decided I wanted to be a Capuchin and I wanted to be a priest. I remember I used to make believe I was a priest at home, pretending to celebrate Mass in my living room. When they were visiting, my aunts would serve as my audience. So I was in the fourth grade when I first started thinking about becoming a Capuchin. And by the time I graduated from high school, I had been accepted into the postulancy program and was on my way to making that dream a reality.

Do you remember what was appealing about becoming a Capuchin?

Among the friars at Sacred heart – and there were quite a few of them living there at that time – I witnessed how loved they were by the people there and how friendly and supportive they were to young people, in-cluding myself. I used to volunteer, even as a young boy, in the church – I was an altar boy and a server of course, but I also volunteered cleaning up the place among other tasks. And so I interacted with the friars a fair amount, and they were also so warm and kind, always getting sandwiches and drinks for those helping out. I also remember being struck by how well they got along with each other. There was a powerful sense of camaraderie and I was impressed by that.

After completing his postulancy and novitiate, Fr. Bob was sent to Manchester, New Hampshire where he taught high school for a couple of years as part of the process of becoming a priest. His next move would be to Garrison NY, where he pursued theological studies at Maryknoll School of Theology and was ordained to the priesthood in 1990. After that, he spent time at Capuchin Youth & Family Min-istries and at St. Pius X Parish in Middletown, CT, among other locations, before ending up at Good Shepherd, where he is today.

We are excited to congratulate Fr. Robert (Bob)Abba-tiello, O.F.M. Cap. on his Jubilee this year, celebrating 25 years as a part of the Capuchin Franciscan priest-hood with the Province of St. Mary! Fr. Bob recently celebrated his Jubilee in a beautiful ceremony and re-ception at the Good Shepherd Church in Inwood, New York, where he is the pastor. He was gracious enough to sit down and talk with our Communications Man-ager Colin Lentz about his experiences as a Capuchin.

Page 9: Capuchin Journey the Content Documents/Journey Issue 2, Summer... · I am excited to share this summer issue of the Capuchin Journey, the ... Faithfully in the Lord, Fr. Francis Gasparik,

Did your experiences working as a teacher inform the work you do now with young people at Good Shepherd?

Absolutely. Though the sort of student I worked with in Manchester, New Hampshire was fairly different from the young people I work with in Inwood at Good Shepherd, both experiences have affirmed for me how much I love working with kids and I love teaching. In Manchester, all of the classes I taught were religion classes, so that gave me an opportunity to do a lot of hands on activities and take what I think is often not very exciting material and make it interesting. We would do activities indoors and outdoors, including prayer services and liturgical rituals. In this way, I got a chance to put some actions behind all the words these kids grow up hearing. And they came around, they really enjoyed what we were doing. Some would even try to switch into my classes. It was a great ex-perience, and I do think it laid an interest in and love for working with youth. Some of them, by the way – I had them in 1983 – I’ve heard from recently. Some I’ve married, some I’ve baptized their children - these are people I had when they were freshmen in high school. So there are still some long term relationships – that’s over 30 years.

How have your experiences changed your own relationship to your faith?

I’ll tell you, there’s an irony in this. I’ve always been a little hesitant when it comes to moving and going to different ministries. I didn’t want to go to Brooklyn initially. I didn’t want to leave when it was time to go. I went to Garrison and I really didn’t want to be the vocation director, I wanted to stay in parish ministry. When I did youth ministry, I loved it for four years. And then when I was asked to be the pastor in Middle-town, I welcomed that, because I wanted to be back in a parish. After that, I came to Good Shepherd, but I didn’t want to come here either! I loved being where I was. So in all of these places, they weren’t necessarily places I chose first, but two or three things were common in each place: 1) God was already there; 2) the ministry was affirming to my gifts and skills, and in each place I was able to use different skills and abili-ties; and 3) each experience taught me tremendous trust and confidence in God. They also made me very humble, because, for example, when you come into a place like this, here at Good Shepherd, things I could do at St. Pius X or in other youth ministries, they didn’t necessarily translate. It taught me a ton of humil-ity and dependence on God. It’s a cliché but God is good all the time, and that’s certainly been true in my experience.

What advice would you give to somebody who is interested in becoming a Capuchin and maybe becoming a priest?

The first thing I would tell them is that I have absolutely no regrets. And I say that first because I’ve been at this for thirty-three years. I love being a friar and I love being a priest. Otherwise, what would I tell some-

one thinking about becoming a Capuchin? Definitely pursue that idea. Pursue your heart, trust in God, don’t give up easily, and be open to the way the Spirit might lead you because it’s not always the way you might think. Today especially, I think, the Capuchin Charisms require a sense of minority – you have to come in with an openness to being a lesser brother. If the vocation is truly from God it will endure, and even in tough moments you’ll find people to provide and ways to gain support, strength, and courage.

We come into religious life, particularly as friars, and we’re not called immediately to positions of leader-ship or authority. We’re sometimes asked to go to places and ministries we’re not sure we should go, or don’t feel equipped to go, or maybe just don’t want to go, and yet we’re asked to set aside personal ambition and goals to serve God’s people. We also have to understand that we’re coming in to this life with less. We’re not coming in to religious life to be rich, to do our own thing, to have our own way. That’s not what community life is about. And I think it’s important for our younger guys to realize that. It’s not just that I wear a brown robe or sandals, but that I’m in this to be a brother and I’m equal to everyone else. It’s not just about me and my life. I think some people struggle with that once they get in, so I would tell them that right up front. If you’re coming in to make a name for yourself, this might not be the place.

Are there ever moments where you step outside of being a Capuchin?

Since professing vows and being ordained, I’m always a Capuchin, whether I’m in my habit or not. I may not always be functioning in a ministerial way, and I suppose I may not always be exhibiting spiritual at-tributes, but I have to remember in the things I do as best I can that I’m always a Capuchin. Now do I make mistakes in that regard? Probably. Sometimes you’re in a situation and maybe your attitude gets the best of you or your impatience gets the best of you or your big mouth gets opened. I wear my habit all over the place here and even when I’m not in it, people recognize me as Fr. Robert or the pastor at Good Shepherd. So people recognize me in or out of my habit for the ministry I do here, so that’s an important reminder to me that I can’t let those people down. I have to be the friar and the priest all the time. Doing so is my call-ing, my way of serving God.

Fr. Bob at his Jubilee celebrating 25 years of priesthood.

LAUDATO SI’M

INIS

TRY

On Thursday, June 18th, Pope Francis released Laudato Si’ (Praise Be to You): On the Care of our Common Home, an 184-page encyclical that outlines his ideas about how we must make changes in the realms of economics, politics, and personal lifestyles to combat climate change and the destruction of the environment. “Climate change is a global problem with grave implications: environmental, social, economic, political and for the distribution of goods,” Pope Francis writes. “It rep-resents one of the principal challenges facing humanity in our day.”

While most papal encyclicals are addressed to the bishops of the Catholic Church, with the occasional inclusion of other groups such as Catholic clergy, religious, and laypeople, this encyclical is intended to address all of humanity – “every person living on this planet.” In this sense, Pope Francis recognizes that the challenges we face with regard to the environment are challenges that affect all of us and that we must all work together to meet these challenges and protect our planet and all of God’s creation. “We need a conversation that includes everyone, since the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concern and affect us all.”

Over the course of six chapters, Pope Francis presents an account of what he sees as the environmental challenges we face and how they relate to our place on this planet. In the first chapter, “What is Happening to our Common Home,” he presents the problem. In the second chapter, he takes a step back to discuss “The Gospel of Creation” – the relation-ship between all living things, all of God’s creations, on earth. The third chapter, “The Human Roots of the Ecological Crisis,” explains how our actions endanger the stability and strength of our planet and all of its inhabitants, while the fourth chapter, “Integral Ecology,” presents the philosophical frame through which Pope Francis thinks we can begin to develop solutions to our environmental challenges. In the fifth chapter, “Lines of Approach and Action,” the Pope offers more concrete recommendations for action to protect the planet and all of God’s creation. Finally, in the sixth chapter, “Ecological Education and Spirituality,” Pope Francis provides guidance with regard to how human beings themselves need to change so as to become better skilled in protecting and honoring our planet as we move forward into the future.

This final chapter is particularly important in the grand scheme of the encyclical as it contains a striking call to conver-sion. “The ecological crisis is also a summons to a profound interior conversation,” writes Pope Francis. “It must be said that some committed and prayerful Christians, with the excuse of realism and pragmatism, tend to ridicule ex-pressions of concern for the environment. Others are passive, they choose not to change their habits and thus become inconsistent.” The answer to this, according to the Pope, is what he calls an “ecological conversation,” a conversion “whereby the effects of their (prayerful Christians) encounter with Jesus Christ become evident in their relationship with the world around them.” He concludes powerfully: “Living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or secondary aspect of our Christian experience.” The message is clear: we all must make a commitment to protect all of God’s creations and we must live this commitment out in our daily lives.

As Capuchin Franciscans, one of our charisms is Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation. The core of this charism is very similar to the sort of commitment to protect God’s creations that Pope Francis calls for in Laudato Si’. We are excited and proud to hear him follow in the footsteps of his namesake, St. Francis of Assisi, by proclaiming the impor-tance for all people of the world to work together to protect all that God has given us.

SOULS IN REPOSE

We offer the following prayer for the repose of the souls of our brothers who have passed this year, may they rest in eternal peace:

The Rule and life of the Friars Minor is this, namely to observe the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ by living in obedience, without property and in chastity. May our brothers, who promised

to observe all this, be filled with the blessing of the most high Father.Amen.

Thank you so much for your support of the Province of St. Mary and the Capuchin Journey! We love having the opportunity to tell you in more detail about how our Capuchin Friars are following in the footsteps of St. Francis, serving those in most need.

We want to hear from you about what things you value most in your engagement with the Province. The needs of the poor and the demands of justice shape our every ministerial endeavor. We attempt to promote the equality of all people within our fraternity, in the churches dedicated to the gospel of Christ, and in the larger world. Capuchin friars minister in a wide variety of settings. Service to people of a variety of cultures in North America and around the globe have allowed us to witness God at work in countless ways.

Here in the Northeast United States, the Province of St. Mary serves through any number of institutions dedicated to the service of real human needs and the proclamation of God’s love. Urban, suburban, and rural; poor, blue collar, and middle class; Latino, Asian, and Engligh-speaking - the friars can be found living amid all these diverse circumstances.

Capuchin Charisms:FRATERNITY of the friars joins them in their common goals and taps into their unique talents to most efficiently operate their own community as well as the communities they serve.

MINORITY has enabled them to walk with the people they serve and be accepted as one of their own.

CONTEMPLATION requires they set aside time to reflect upon the progress and direction of their mission and to listen to God’s guidance in their mission.

MINISTRY has led the Capu-chins to appeal to and often allay the hunger, despair, and loneliness of those among whom Christ would have walked.

JUSTICE, PEACE, ECOLOGY are uniquely Capuchin because an essential part of the mission of St. Francis was to strive for all of God’s creation to live in peace and harmony.
