There once was a teacherWhose principal feature
Was hidden in quite an odd way.Students by millionsOr possibly zillions
Surrounded him all of the day. When finally seen
By his scholarly deanAnd asked how he managed the deed,
He lifted three fingersAnd said, "All you swingers
Need only to follow my lead.""To rise from a zero

Where am I going,How shall I get there, and
How will I know I've arrived?"(Mager, 1984)

The 3 Instruc-onal Shi3s that come with Common Core:
1. TEXT – Build knowledge through content-‐rich nonficOon in ALL classrooms
2. TASK – Reading, WriOng, Speaking, and Listening that is grounded in evidence from the text, both literary and informaOon texts
3. INSTRUCTION – Regular pracOce with complex text and its academic language
With open discussions and learning, it is okay for students to be incorrect. Be prepared to allow students to "take over conversaOons" in the classroom and allow other students to guide incorrect answers. A failure free environment will open doors for deeper knowledge.

A Note From NahirnyThank you for all the phone calls, cards and emails you’ve sent me and Mike. They have kept me in
great spirits for the past two months. I’m pleased to be approaching the end of my cancer treatments. I finished the radiaOon therapy in late October, and by the Ome you read this, I will be in Shands (UF) Hospital in Gainesville (surgery Tuesday, November 13) to remove the tumor. I’ll be there for about five days, and then will be recovering at home for a few weeks agerwards. If you want to be in touch with me while I’m in the hospital, Shands has a service you can use to send a “CareMail” message. It’s a free, online service that prints out and delivers e-‐mail messages to paOents in their rooms every weekday. Here is the link: h,ps://ufandshands.org/send-‐paOent-‐message
My doctor says if all goes according to plan, and if I stay off my feet and don’t lig anything heavier than a pencil in the first few weeks ager surgery, he may allow me to return to work on/around December 10-‐11, instead of waiOng unOl January 2! So, I hope to see you all before the holiday break, maybe even in Ome for the MHS holiday party on December 19. That would be a wonderful gig for me.
Thanks again for keeping me and Mike in your thoughts and prayers! This Thanksgiving, we're especially grateful to be part of the “Pirate

Union pleads with Scott to halt use of test scores to judge teachersFlorida's push to use student test scores to judge teacher performance should be halted this year, with Gov. Rick Scott using his executive authority to put a stop to a faulty system, the state teachers union says. The Florida Education Association this week sent a letter to Scott asking him to suspend the...
Scott talks of tying college funding to student successGetting a good return on the state's investment was Gov. Rick Scott's catchphrase Wednesday as he pushed universities to measure college students' performances. Scott said he wanted to measure whether students found jobs or went on to get more education after college, what their salaries were... Scott gets schools chiefs' wish listA committee of seven school district superintendents, by request of Gov. Rick Scott, suggested a number of ways to cut the educational red tape, but also tacked on some requests that were unrelated to that task.
Matanzas High School's Smile Train project is underway. The Smile Train provides free cleft surgery “which takes as little as 45 minutes and costs as little as $250, and can give desperate children not just a new smile — but a new life.” Donations are gratefully accepted. If you are able to do so, bring your spare change to the Hispanic Club students' table in the Dining Hall or stop by Ms. Yvonne Valdivieso's classroom, 6-218. Smile Train bracelets will be on sale during first lunch. Last year, we were able to pay for one child’s operation. This is a wonderful humanitarian cause. Imagine if we could help another child this year, too! On behalf of the children, Thank you.
