ActivitiesREADING Use a web or other graphic orga-

nizer to write or draw words as-sociated with warm-ups, stretch-ing, exercise, and cool downs.

How does this strategy help you remember information?

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Assign exercise leaders in your class

to guide or lead other students in ap-propriate warm-ups, stretching, and cool-down activities.

MATH/ART Draw a clock and label the following exercise periods: warm-up for 10 minutes, 5 minutes of stretching, 40 minutes of vigorous exercise, and a 5 minute cool down.

ART Divide a piece of paper in four sections and draw your favorite activity for each compo-nent of an exercise session: warm-up, stretching, vigorous exercise session, and a cool-down.

WRITING/ART With a family mem-ber, list or draw good warm-up and cool-down activities. Bring your activities back to class and share them with your classmates.

CRITICAL THINKING What could happen if you skipped an important part of a workout like the warm-up activity? Describe in your own words, and from your own knowl-edge, why each step in an exercise session is important.

Discussion Quest ionsDo you include warm-ups,

stretching, and cool-downs in your exercise sessions?

How often do you exercise?

There are several components of an effective workout. Athletes, or people that are just trying to stay physically active, should try to include these important steps in most of their exercise sessions.

The Warm-UpA warm-up is a 5 to 10 minute period of light exercise that warms the muscles and prepares them for further exercise. Activities such as brisk walking, jogging, and cycling can quickly provide blood flow to your muscles.

Stretching and Joint RotationsStretching or flexibility exercises help increase your range of motion, decrease pain and sore-ness, and help relax the muscles. From a standing position with your arms hanging loosely at your sides, flex, extend, and rotate each of the following joints:

• Fingers • Wrists• Elbows • Shoulders • Neck • Trunk and shoulder blades • Hips • Knees • Ankles • Feet and toes

The Exercise EventAn exercise event is a vigorous exercise that gives your heart and lungs a continuous workout or provides a good workload activity for your muscles.

The Cool DownA 5 to 10 minute period of physical activity such as jogging or walking will decrease body temperature and remove waste products from muscles. It is also wise to include several flexibility or stretching exercises in your cool down.

Discussion Quest ionsHow do you prepare for the

cold and flu season?

How often do you wash your hands throughout the day?

During the fall and winter months, people are more likely to catch a cold or come down with the flu. While there is no cure for these common illnesses, there are some steps you can take to prevent or reduce your exposure to these viruses.

Wash Your Hands Frequent hand washing is one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep from catching a cold or the flu. Anti-bacterial washes allow you to get the benefits of hand washing when you don’t have access to soap and water. Alcohol-based foams and gels are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control for hand hygiene.

Get Plenty of SleepPeople need approxi-mately eight hours of sleep each night. Lack of sleep can suppress the body’s immune system and make it more susceptible to the disease process.

Good Nutrition and Physical ActivityA well balanced diet and lots of physical activ-ity will also help your body fight off cold and flu viruses. Stock up on vegetables, fruits, and whole grains which are loaded with disease fighting nu-trients. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water.

Flu ShotsEvery year in October and November, flu shots are available. These vaccines help prevent people from getting the flu. Ask your doctor if you should get a flu shot. It is highly recommended that senior citizens, very young children, and people with a suppressed immune system get a flu shot every year.

Tips for Treating a Cold or the FluThere are no cures for the common cold or

the flu. Antibiotics do not kill these viruses

and, if taken, can lead to resistant strains

of bacteria. While prevention is the best

approach to combat the cold and flu virus,

there are ways to minimize your symptoms if

you do contract these viruses.

• Use over-the-counter medicines to treat

fever, cold, and cough symptoms.

• Feed your body regularly and drink plenty

of fluids.

• Get plenty of rest.

• Stay away from others until you are no

longer contagious.

Mr. Franklin was Washington ElementarySchool’s best math teacher. He knew howto make math fun. He started each classperiod with an interesting math brainteaserand ended each period with a fun mathgame. The students at Washington enjoyedMr. Franklin’s class and looked forward tolearning new math concepts each day.

Mr. Franklin’s typical class routine suddenlychanged during the fall. He developed achronic cough and hoarse voice and spentless time talking during class. He seemedbreathless all the time and struggled to getthrough a lesson. He eventually startedgiving out written explanations and direc-tions for each math lesson. The studentsalso noticed that Mr. Franklin was absentmore than usual.

One morning, as a substitute teacher pre-pared to teach Mr. Franklin’s class, the prin-cipal, Mr. Armstrong, entered the class-room. “I have some sad news for youtoday,” Mr. Armstrong said in a sullen voice.“Mr. Franklin has passed away.” The stu-dents were shocked to hear this news.Mr. Armstrong explained that Mr. Franklinhad been diagnosed with lung cancerseveral months earlier and, unfortunate-ly, there was not much that could bedone to save his life.

“I would like to read a short letterthat Mr. Franklin wrote to you justbefore his death,” Mr. Armstrongsaid.

The students spent that class peri-od developing an Anti-Smokingmural to hang in their school. They researched the statisticson smoking-related illnesses anddeaths and included the facts ontheir mural. Mr. Franklin’s death had certainly beenan important lesson for the students and staff at WashingtonElementary School!

MATH Over 440,000 deaths in the United Statesrelated to tobacco use occur each year. In fact, onein two lifetime smokers will die from their smokinghabit. 440,000 in expanded notation is written400,000 + 40,000. Write the following numbers inexpanded notation: (1,450), (289), (246,400), and(15,760).

READING Locate an advertisement for cigarettes ortobacco products in a magazine.Does the advertisement conveythe harmful effects of tobaccouse? Is there a warning on theadvertisement? How do you feel about this advertisement?

TECHNOLOGY/RESEARCH Visit theAmerican Lung Association to learn more aboutthe lungs and effects of smoking, www.lungusa.org. Find out how secondhand smoke can affect others.

ART/WRITING Create an anti-smokingposter to hang outside your classroom this month.

CRITICAL THINKING/WRITINGWrite or draw three good reasons to refuse the offerto smoke. How can peer pressure to begin smokingaffect a young person? What should you do if youare ever pressured to begin smoking?

Discussion QuestionsDo you know someone that is ill or has died

due to a smoking related illness?

Have you ever encouraged someone to quit smoking?

A Sudden Loss

Dear Students,It has been a pleasure to be your math

teacher. While I have always been very

knowledgeable about math, I failed to follow

some very important health steps that could

have prevented this horrible disease. I’m

sure most of you know that I am a smoker.

A terrible habit that I started when I was a

young man. The doctors say that smoking

has caused my lung cancer and has stolen

20 to 30 years of my life. I have had great

pain with this disease and have struggled to

breathe every day. Looking back, I wish I

had never started smoking. I should have

refused that first cigarette that was offered

to me. I hope that you will see my death as

my last lesson taught: Please do not ever

start smoking and encourage others that are

currently smoking to quit. I wish you all

the best and many years of good health!

Sincerely,Mr. Franklin

Discussion Quest ionsHave you ever been bullied?

How did you handle the bullying?

Have you ever bullied anyone?

Why do you think somepeople become bullies? Bullying happens when a person tries to in-

tentionally and consistently hurt someone in order to have power over him or her.

Anyone that wants to hurt someone on purpose is a bully. A bully might verbally hurt a person by teasing, insulting, or calling them bad names. Physical methods of bullying include pushing, grabbing, or even hitting a person to cause harm. Most often, a bully is trying to use any method possible to threaten or make a person feel bad. Bullying can happen anywhere, including at school or work. There can be one bully or a group of bullies that are trying to hurt others. Bul-lying usually happens over and over again.

What Makes a Bully?

Bullies come from all backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities. The one common factor among all bullies is that they all seem to feel bad about themselves or are insecure, so they try to hurt others to make themselves feel better. A bully usually targets someone that they feel stands out in some way. Kids that are smaller, of a different culture, or who have a disability, can sometimes be a target for a bully. Bullies also target kids that have more than they do or are better students or athletes. Jealousy and envy often motivate a person to bully someone.

Bullying is never acceptaBle

Sometimes, people see bullying in schools or during childhood as kids just being kids. In some

cultures, bullying might even be accepted or even encouraged because it is seen as being macho or strong. Unfortunately, most bullies are hurting others because they feel bad about themselves or don’t like the way their life is. Bullies need help. So, it is important that the family and friends of bullies let them know that

their behavior is unacceptable. Bullying is usually the result of weakness and insecurity and never makes a person look strong or good.

hoW to Deal With Bullying

Walk away and avoid bullies. Stay with a group. Bullies often target kids that are alone. Be strong and assertive, but don’t bully back or get physical. Tell an adult such as a teacher, principal, coun-selor, and your parents if you are being bullied. Keep telling adults until the bullying stops. Use humor to throw the bully off track and make him/her laugh. Throw the bully off by changing the conversation. Tell yourself that you are a good person be-cause you don’t hurt others like the bully does. Help your school develop a zero tolerance policy and serious consequences for any kind of bullying.

ActivitiesCRITICAL THINKING As a family, discuss the topic of bullying. How is bul-lying viewed in your culture? Has anyone in your family ever been bullied? Have you or one of your family members ever been a bully? List steps that you can take as a family to deal with bullying by outsiders or even by other family members.

READING/WRITING/ART Write or draw your own description of bullying. How would you handle being bullied?

MATH A bully stole lunch money from two classmates last week. The amount of money sto-len equaled $5.75. The principal contacted the bully’s parents about the incident. The bully’s parents felt that their son should be disciplined for his actions. The bully was forced to apologize to his classmates, pay the kids back double what he had stolen from them, and help the custo-dians clean classrooms every day after school for one month. How much money did the bully have to pay his victims? Do you think this was a fair punishment? Explain your answer.

PROBLEM SOLVING You learned from the article that bullies are usually insecure and feel bad about themselves. How can bullies get the help they need to change their behavior? How would you help a friend that bullied other students?
