Increase of safety requirements

The economic importance of industrial processcontinuity in onshore and offshore projects has resultedin increasingly stringent project specifications focusingparticularly on the safety and reliability of powerdistribution and motor control equipment. The demandsof today's specifiers include increased device densityper square metre of floor space, particularly ininstallations like on offshore platforms, compliance withthe highest of international safety standards, guaranteed operational reliability and the demand forequipment requiring little or no maintenance.

Eaton's range of Capitole low voltage Systems havebeen specifically designed and developed to meetthese requirements. The Capitole 40 Motor ControlCentre is valued internationally for it's application-oriented characteristics, such as full compartmentationand highest form of separation, it's optional fault-freezone between incoming and outgoing feeders, as wellas the system's flexibility, including the facility toquickly carry-out on-site changes, even under serviceconditions.

The optionally available Capitole 40 with fault freezones and insulated main busbar system is consideredto be an ArcFree MCC. Precautions have been taken to limit possible causes of failures: Increased safety

Forms of internal separationThe IEC 60439-1 defines forms of internal separation. The form of separation determines how busbars, functional units and terminals are separated fromeachother. The BSEN 60439-1 contains Normative Annex NA “Guide to the internal separation ofassemblies”. Table NA1 gives additional informationregarding different types of construction, based ontypical practices in the United Kingdom.

Cubicle arrangement

All cubicles are of modular design, comprising a top-mounted busbars enclosed within their owncompartment and a switchgear or controlgearcompartment. The vertical distribution busbars areaccommodated in a glass-fibre reinforced polyesterbusbar duct with an adjacent, separate compartmentfor cable-entry to the withdrawable switchgear orcontrolgear compartments.

Main busbar system

Main busbar systemThe main busbars are located in a separate compartmentat the top of the switchboard. The compartment has adegree of protection of IP 4X with respect to the lowersituated switchgear and the vertical cable-entrycompartment. The busbars, phase bars and neutral bar, have astandard thickness of 10 mm and are available forcurrent ratings from 800 up to 6300 A. They aresecured by glass-fibre reinforced polyester busbarsupports which allow easy, on-site changing of thebusbars if uprating of the system is necessary. This canbe done without having to alter the busbar supports.On-site extension of busbars can be easily and quicklyaccomplished with the appropriate busbar couplingclamps; no drilling is required. The bottom of the busbarcompartment is sealed by a glass-fibre reinforcedpolyester plate.

Vertical distribution busbar system

For cubicles with drawout outgoing units verticalbusbars are branched from the main busbar system bymeans of insulated connection bars. The verticalbusbars are located in a glass-fibre reinforced duct atthe back of the cubicle. The busbar duct is partitionedinto four sections, each section accommodating aphase or neutral busbar consisting of two silver-platedparallel conducts.

Vertical auxiliary busbarsA duct for up to four auxiliary busbars canbe located next to the vertical distributionbusbar duct. Tee-off to each drawout unit ismade via a 4-pole socket outlet per moduleheight.

The front of the duct is screened by glass fibrereinforced polyester plates, so that each pair ofbusbars is fully enclosed, thus preventing theoccurrence of open arcs between busbars orbetween busbars and earth. The bus duct screeningplates have a module height of 125 mm and areeach provided with sockets for busbar branching.

BranchingDraw-out units utilize scissor-shaped main isolatingcontacts. When a draw-out unit is fitted the powercircuit contacts enter the jaws of the scissor contactscausing them to make contact with the parallel busbarconductors. When a drawout unit is being fully inserted, the power circuit contact pins enter the scissor contactsand slightly force apart the contact blades against thesteel contact spring. As a result and excellent, lowresistance, contact is obtained on both busbar anddraw-out unit. The scissor contacts can be easilyremoved, and if required, quickly replaced, even underlive conditions. Blanking plugs are available for unusedbusbar openings to provide IPXXB protection.

Main isolating contactsThe scissor-shaped contacts (patent granted) have anumber of important advantages:• They prevent wear on the vertical busbars, normally

resulting from the in and outward movement of thedrawout units.

• There is no risk of welding to the busbars in theevent of high starting or short-circuit currents

• Due to the scissor-shaped construction1) increasingthrough-going currents cause increased contactpressure on the vertical busbars and on the tray'scontact pin, consequently preventing contactrepulsion under short-circuit conditions.

The scissor shaped contacts each have a maximumcurrent rating of 160 A and have been proven towithstand a prospective short-circuit current of up to 100 kA.

The standardised, modular Capitole 40 system offerspractically unlimited possibilities to satisfy customers'demands for highgrade Motor Control Centres whilstproviding optimum operational reliability, personalsafety, flexibility and economy.

Incoming feeders and buscouplersWhen a single device is mounted in one cubicle - forexample an incoming feeder section - switchgear andspace for cable connection are integrated in onecompartment. However, associated measuring sectionsare housed in a separate compartment. As an optionthe busbar-sided and cable-sided incoming feederterminations can be phase-to-phase, phase-to-neutraland phase-to-earth screened, whilst buscouplers haveterminal screening on left and right sides.Standard available incoming feeders and buscouplersfor Capitole 40 MCCs are switch-disconnectors typeDumeco up to 3150 A, or Air Circuit Breakers typeMagnum1) up to 6300 A. The circuit breakers arewithdrawable and can be provided with shutters (IP 20)of which cable and busbar sides are individuallyoperable and padlockable (optional).

Outgoing unitsOutgoing feeders are available as:• Switch-disconnector + fuse units up to 1000 A.• Switch-disconnector-fuse units up to 500 A.• MCCB units up to 1000 A.• Withdrawable switch-disconnector + fuse unitsup to 400 A.• Withdrawable motor starter units up to 132 kW.• Withdrawable Air Circuit Breaker units up to 2900 A.

Outgoing withdrawable unitsDrawout units are provided with contact pins connectingthe unit to distribution busbars and cable via thecorresponding scissor-shaped main isolating contacts.Since the full phase segregation of the busbarbranching points is also continued at the contact pins, the possibility of phase-to-phase, phase-to-neutral andphase-to-earth faults are excluded. Each drawout unitcomprises the following locking devices:• An automatic door interlock, which prevents the door

being opened when the switch is in the ON position.• A locking device against insertion or removal when

the switch is in the ON position.• A latch, to prevent the unit from being dropped

accidentally if removed too quickly.

A lever at the front of each drawout unit permitssmooth insertion and removal, and, in addition, ensuresa good end-stop.

Fuse-links (if present) are located in such a way, thatthey can only be replaced when the drawout unit isfully removed from the cubicle. For local signalling andoperation, each drawout unit is provided with afrontmounted panel showing up to eight operating andsignalling functions. A twenty-pole auxiliary isolatingcontact block has been incorporated to enable remotecontrol and signalling. On request, drawout units can be supplied with afourpole plug connection to the vertical auxiliarybusbars in the back of the cubicle.

14

Testing of secondary circuitsDrawout units can be supplied with a test position forsecondary circuit testing.Several options are available, e.g.:• Removal of scissor-shaped contacts on the cable side.• A test switch.• Test unit for testing withdrawable motor/feeder units

outside the MCC.

32-drawer system For smaller motor ratings, an optimum filling factor canbe obtained by using the 32-drawer system with areduced module height of 62.5 mm.The reduced height starter can be mixed with normalheight units in the same cubicle. It is using the samescissor contacts as the normal height units.

Application flexibilityProcess changes, e.g. up rating of motor power, mayrequire on-site modification of motor starter circuitsand accordingly, enlargement of switchgearcompartments. The Capitole 40 design is able to meetthis requirement under live conditions. In cubicles with a vertical distribution busbar system, provided with screening plates for insertion of mainisolating scissor contacts along its entire length, changing of outgoing compartment sizes can be safelycarried out under live conditions. For this purpose, thecompartment separation plates, being secured by twobolts at the front of the cubicle, can be easily andquickly removed and secured at the desired height. In a similar way, a compartment can be divided alongits width into two individual compartments by changingthe compartment separation plate for a partitioned one.The appropriate connections to the distribution busbarsare then realised via a contact adaptor unit, situated atthe rear of the partitioned separation plate.

Cable connection

With incoming feeder sections in excess of 1000 A (or outgoing feeders in excess of 630 A), cabling isintegrated in the switchgear compartment. The maincurrent cables are then directly connected to theincoming or outgoing unit. For parallel cables, a cableconnector set is available.

Cable-entry compartmentIf several incoming and outgoing feeder sections aremounted in one cubicle, and cable connection is madefrom the front, a separate, lockable cable-entrycompartment, along the entire height of the switchgearcompartment, is provided at the right-hand side. On the side wall, mounting strips are available for cableclamps or cable glands. Cable connections to drawoutunits are made in the switchgear compartment withoutthe use of cable lugs. The terminals are fully enclosedin a cable connector block, together with thecablesided scissor-shaped isolating contacts. The cable-entry compartment is isolated from the switchgearcompartments by means of screening plates (IP 3X).The standard cable-entry compartment width is 250 mm (375 or 500 mm optional available). Thecompartment is provided with an undrilled, removablegland plate at the bottom of the cubicle. A verticalearth bar runs along the height of the cable-entrycompartment and is connected to the earth bar of themain busbar system.

Earth barsCapitole 40 switchboards are supplied with a horizontalearth bar 25 x 10 mm, located in the main busbarcompartment. Vertical branches from the main earthbar, with a cross-section of 30 x 8 mm are fitted in thefeeder and end cubicles; earth bars 20 x 4 mm in allother cubicles.

Clink is an automation system with individual controlunits for each motor and feeder circuit within aCapitole 40 switchboard. All units execute an extensiverange of protection, monitoring and control functions. In addition, serial communication is possible betweenthe Motor Control Centre and other systems e.g. DCS, SCADA, applying various protocols i.e. Modbus,

Profibus, Control Net, Data Highway Plus, etc.

Eaton's integrated Clink system provides plantmanagers with comprehensive data and opportunitiesto further optimize plant performance, efficiency andproductivity.Since 1993, the Clink system, successfully applied inEaton's Capitole 40 Motor Control Centre has beenfield-proven world-wide with full appreciation fromcustomers in Europe, the Middle East, the Far Eastand South America.

RedundancyDue to growing safety requirements and the demandfor increased system reliability and availability Clink, next to its simplex system design, is also available witha redundant communication link. For internal communication the open network standardDeviceNet is used with the advantage that alsofrequency controllers, automatic transfer switchinglogic and other devices supporting DeviceNet can besimply implemented and configured via one and thesame network.

Clink II in Capitole 40 offers the following benefits: • Less downtime: Clink II is a reliable system with lowMTTR and high MTBF and above all offers a veryreliable motor protection.• Reduced costs compared to conventional MCCs:

The use of an intelligent MCC eliminates controlcabling, DCS I/O, Interposing Relais Panels.

• Reduced design time: the engineer can use typicalschematics and typical configuration settings.

• Reduced testing and commissioning: the engineersneed less time for FAT, SAT and commissioning onsite, Clink II allows easy fault finding.

• Standard a lot of functionality is available:If you need it in the future it is already there (e.g. kW or kWh).

• Comprehensive data for your process automation ormaintenance systems: all relevant data is available.

• Advanced authorisation: instead of screwdrivers youneed passwords to change protection settings.

• Proven technology: Clink has already been usedsince 1993, there is a large global installed base.
