What was the Berlin Wall?

The Berlin Wall was a concrete wall enforced with rebar

It ran along the border of the German Democratic Republic and West Germany

It was not one wall but in fact two with a short span in between

Why was the Berlin Wall built?

Why was the Berlin Wall built?

West Capitalism and the East Communist People wanted to leave Eastern Europe for different reasons; Communism and some because of the economic political reasons.

West Provided Shops full of Products, freedom of speech

East Berlin realize people were leaving and not coming back.

People were still able to travel freely in the 1950’s

East Berlin was starting to lose really good quality workers and this was really annoying Khrushchev.

1961 Khrushchev had and argument with new president Kennedy.

To wake up one Sunday morning, whether to go to Church or the market, and find a concrete wall bisecting your city

The equivalent of a wall cutting through the middle of the Kennedylaan, through the Centrum and along the Aalsterweg

How would you feel? How would you get groceries, shop, go to school?

Why did the Wall fall? Why did the Wall fall? Communism was weakening. November 9th 1989 there was an announcement by Government official Gunter Schabowski.

This was “Permanent relocations can be done through all border checkpoints between East Germany in the West Germany or West Berlin.”

People started to meet at the Wall and saw that the guards were letting them through

They came with hammers and slowly started to bring the wall down
