goodrich’s history as a commercial aerospace supplier began in 1909 when our first cord

airplane tires were installed on aviation pioneer glenn Curtiss’ speed-record-setting plane.

this noteworthy achievement was followed up when goodrich engineers helped to

solve one of flying’s most perilous problems – ice. Our work led to the first commercial

de-icers being installed in 1932. Soon every major aircraft manufacturer was using them.

To ensure this heritage continues, Goodrich has a research and development program called BRITE

(BReakthrough Innovation Thrust for Excellence). This program ensures we’re actively engaged in technology

to keep goodrich at the forefront of aerospace capabilities. It also encourages the development

of new ideas, assesses their breakthrough potential and facilitates market introduction.

Our innovation strategy is coupled with an investment strategy which focuses on new, leading-edge technologies. These encompass ceramic matrix composites, nanotechnology, robust wireless

communication systems and sensing technologies, advanced gas systems, electric brakes and others

through time, people’s perspective of goodrich has changed dramatically. Once thought of as a tire company, goodrich has achieved market leadership positions as an aerospace, defense and space supplier.

While our heritage in defense dates back to supporting the First and Second World Wars, our contributions

to the cause have taken an entirely new path. Back in 1917, soldiers wore Goodrich gas masks, raincoats and

boots. Now we’re providing advanced defense systems that support the needs of the warfighter. highlights include our integrated landing system on the lockheed Martin F-35 lightning II, re-engine/ re-pylon program for the C-5, and our Vehicle health Management Systems (VhMS) or hUMS for the Sikorsky uh-60M BlACk hAWk.

One of Goodrich’s many historical contributions is our involvement with America’s first man in space. The man’s name was Commander Alan Shepard and he was very well-dressed for his journey, wearing a silver

nylon suit manufactured by none other than Goodrich.

Goodrich continues to invest in advanced technologies to position for future military and space programs. These investments include research and development as well as strategic acquisitions:

• TEAC Aerospace Technologies, adding increased mission data recording and debriefing systems • Skyline Industries, providing lightweight, crashworthy seating as well as floor armor• Recon/Optical Inc. (ROI), specializing in dual-band and infrared framing cameras, imagery and

data exploitation systems, and sophisticated optical devices• Cloud Cap Technology, including autopilot flight management systems, inertial

measurement sensors, and stabilized imaging microgimbals

Intelligence, Surveillance and reconnaissance (ISr) has been a significant growth area for Goodrich

as ISR continues to be a priority for military budgets worldwide. Our airborne reconnaissance systems include

SyErS-2, which is operational as the u.S. Air Force’s most advanced airborne ISR sensor, and the DB-110, which is proven on manned and unmanned platforms and is currently in service with the uk Royal Air Force

and the Japanese Self-Defense Force and under contract with Polish, Greek and Moroccan Air Forces.

Other military products and programs include fixed-wing retrofits and upgrades, high quality elastomer and

composite products (for virginia Class submarines), landing gear and high temperature engine components,

missile actuation systems, electrothermal ice protection systems and ejection seats.

goodrich’s Advanced Concept Ejection Seats (ACES) have to work 100% of the time, every time. Lives depend upon our seats working properly so pilots can return home to their families. Military pilots stationed across the globe put their trust in their aircraft and their extensive training to successfully complete their missions. They are well prepared for any potential problem that might occur - including emergency situations where the only option is ejecting from the aircraft to save their lives.

“Each time we meet or hear from an ejection survivor, our passion for this business increases. We are delighted to be able to help protect those who serve their countries by giving them the opportunity to go home to their families, and then come back to fly another day,” said Bob Sadler, chief engineer for Goodrich’s ejection seat systems team.

Goodrich employees had the opportunity to hear firsthand from ejection survivor, Major Costello, whose story touched all who heard it. After all, it isn’t everyday that you meet someone face-to-face who is alive today because of what you do on the job. his testimonial both confirmed and reaffirmed that what our employees do on a daily basis truly makes a life-saving difference.

Major Costello’s story begins like this. On June 11, 2007, he and his wingman* were flying a mission at high altitude somewhere over Alaska when all of a sudden a midair collision occurred. In split seconds, shrapnel started coming through his plane and he realized he couldn’t save it because it went out of control into negative G’s. he then reached down to pull the handles which started the entire ejection process. At 27,000 feet and an ejection speed of approximately 400 knots, Major Costello “punched out” and held on for dear life. When asked what thoughts crossed his mind at the time he said, “I thought of my family first, and then wondered if I would survive, and wondered where my wingman was. I also remember thinking how cold it was up there and remember seeing all the clouds beneath me as I was looking down. My fingers and hands hurt because I was gripping the handles so hard and the air around me was so cold.”

he distinctly recalls the sensation of the seat riding smoothly up and out of the aircraft once he pulled the handles. The ACES II® seat is known globally for being the softest ride in the industry at only 12 G’s in comparison to our competitor’s seat which rides at 18 G’s. Major Costello noted that “While the ride was scary, everything worked as advertised. I felt a sense of relief and believed I might actually live when the chute finally opened.”

Both Major Costello and his family members expressed deep appreciation for what the employees at the Colorado Springs facility do each day. he said, “After seeing your faces here, I see that you work hard to do what you do each day and you actually care about what you do. My family and I thank you for making the ACES II® seat.”

Early helicopter history states that in 1922, george de Bothezat built a helicopter with four

six-bladed rotors, under the sponsorship of the U.S. Army. powered with a 180-hp (134-kW)

engine and weighing 3,600 pounds (1,633 kilograms), it carried up to three passengers in

more than 100 flights at McCook field near Dayton, Ohio. however, the helicopter never

rose higher than 15 feet (4.6 meters).

The helicopters of today perform heroic feats in the most demanding operating conditions, from rescuing

swimmers in high seas and pitching winds to flying through enemy armaments during combat.

Our broad product portfolio includes, but is not limited to: vehicle health Management Systems

(vhMS) or huMS, drive systems, rotor actuators, rescue hoists, electric power generation and distribution,

lighting systems, engine controls, sensor systems, and laser warning systems.

Our VhMS has a well-established reputation as the industry leader. The uh-60M BlACk hAWk operating

with the Goodrich vhMS set a new record for most hours flown by a battalion within a 12-month time frame

and saved an anticipated $45 million in maintenance materials and labor as well as flight costs.

Strategic acquisitions have further increased our helicopter product mix: They include Skyline Industries

(lightweight, crashworthy seating and floor armor), tEAC Aerospace technologies (mission data

recorders and debriefing systems) and Cloud Cap technology (stabilized imaging microgimbals).

Statistics indicate that helicopters are to represent 55% of future military aircraft production with 5,000

being built before 2019. goodrich is well positioned with extensive content on existing platforms and

opportunities for growth on new ones.

goodrich continues to strengthen its leadership position as a supplier of systems and components for gas turbine engines with applications in the commercial, regional, business, defense, helicopter and industrial markets. And our focus on respecting the environment has lead to innovations in the propulsion marketplace.

In the decades since Boeing first flew its 707 to the rollout of its new 787 Dreamliner, goodrich technology has reduced flight noise substantially. As a major designer and manufacturer of nacelles, Goodrich

acoustics specialists are at the forefront of noise reduction research. We strive to find new ways to manufacture

quieter systems, reducing noise during takeoff and landing as well as noise in the interior cabin throughout flight.

Our latest acknowledgement has come from Boeing with our one piece acoustic inlet liner and lip which

is in production on the 787 Dreamliner.

Goodrich is leading the united kingdom program titled ‘Advanced More Electric Systems’ or AMES. This program

focuses on the development of electric start technology on efficient, next-generation single-aisle aircraft in order

to reduce engine emissions and lower operating costs. AMES is allowing our team to further develop the electric start capability of our award-winning variable frequency technology in operation today on the Airbus

A380. This technology improvement has already demonstrated substantial benefits in the reduction of aircraft weight, cost and emissions.

Engine activity has also focused on an engine controls joint venture (Jv) with Rolls-Royce, named Aero Engine Controls. This Jv accelerates the innovation, development and implementation of new technology for the

increasingly important propulsion market.

Finally, Pratt & Whitney selected us to provide the nacelle system for its innovative new purepowertM pW1000g engine that will power the Bombardier CSeries and the Mitsubishi Regional Jet.
