Composer NotesThis “Canticle of Mary” can be found on Morning & Evening—Prayer for the Commute,Prayer for the Journey (double CD 20099, songbook 20139), where the canticle is recorded in five different ways:
1) Unison a cappella2) Soprano solo with harp3) Unison with keyboard accompaniment4) Verses alternating women’s and men’s voices5) Unison with expanded choral-harmony cadences
It is also available on Glory Bound (CD 20638, octavo packet 20639), a compilation of piecesfrom Morning and Evening.
LITURGICAL USE: It may be sung as the canticle at the end of Evening Prayer, or at any time asa song of praise on feasts of Our Lady, and especially on the Fourth Sunday of Advent. Sing itat times of prayer for justice, peace, or outreach to the poor and celebrations of commitmentto the religious life.
PERFORMANCE: The text of Mary’s canticle is a radical affirmation of the power of God. Itshould be sung with conviction. Sing freely in a chant-like style in speech rhythm and withnatural stresses on important words. Its strong melody allows it to work well unaccompanied. When sung accompanied, do not let the accompanying instrument dominate. When singing inunison, sing from the guitar version to avoid confusion with the fuller harmonized version.
