chance to sit down and evaluate the highlights of the show. Starting on page 26, we’ve summed things up on your behalf.

Read about the Gold Innovation Award winning Spider Head Liner from Matriruiz SL, or catch up on the highlights of the conference that ran along-side the exhibition. There are some interesting pro-jects underway, including a bio-lacquer made from extracts of tomato skins!

Finally, we have an update from Jason Hegarty, chairman of Canned Food UK. Over the last year, £2.4bn has been spent on canned goods in the UK, which is an increase of £3.2m compared with the previous year. In fact, consecutively year-on-year the popularity of the can has continued to increase, to the point that 99 per cent of the UK population are now buying canned foods. Turn to page 35 to find out more.

This and much more lie ahead, so I will leave you now to enjoy this issue.

Welcome to the June issue of CanTech International. We have returned from a successful Metpack exhibition to bring

you the very latest issue, which is packed, as always, with interesting features from around the world of can making.

As you will have seen from our rather dashing front cover, we have a feature on the continent of Africa. Editorial board member Simon Jennings, of the Nomis Consultancy, looks at the burgeoning can making business in this area, reporting on the many developments therein and offering his views on the future.

Major players are investing heavily in the region, and there is a lot to be gained for those willing to make the move. Turn to page 12 for the full story.

Another CanTech editorial board member has also kindly taken the time to talk to us this issue. Bob Gary, of Stolle Machinery Company, caught up with us on our Routemaster bus at Metpack to give us the lowdown on five new machines released at the show. Ever heard of a vertical bodymaker? This is just one new innovation we discuss on page14.

There’s more to biodiversitythan meets the eye.

Butterflies are an example of Nature’s infinite variety. Without it, life on Earth would be massively different.

Diversity in plants means a greater choice of crops, ensures natural sustainability in animal species, and creates healthy

ecosystems that are better at withstanding hardship. Cans, too, come in a myriad shapes and sizes. Manufacturers can use them

to customize packaging and set their products apart, guarantee their

companies’ financial health and boost their ability to weather market

volatility. All in all, we’ve learned a lot from Nature.

LONDON BUS A HIT IN ESSEN

At the Metpack Innovation Awards, the Spanish company Matriruiz scooped the gold for its Spider Head Liner.

Gernot Geldner, chairman of the jury, said that it had taken the panel, including our own publisher Neil McRitchie, over three hours to decide on the winners.

Geldner said at the announcement: “The industry is really innovative, really looking forward, and is preparing for a good future.”

The winning machine is a robotic head and liner designed by Matriruiz SL. Its operation is based on a delta robot, completely adapted and updated by the company’s engineering department. The machine forms a friction and space free articulation, allowing high speed and safety in the application of sealing compounds.

The head liner can be applied to any exist-ing production line.

MATRIRUIZ WINS GOLD AT METPACK

Antonio Garcia Puche, from the Matriruiz sales department, said on winning the award: “For us it’s really unexpected. We are a small company with big competitors and we only started on the project in October of 2013. We are really pleased to have won gold here at Metpack, it hasn’t really sunk in yet.”

Silver went to KBA MetalPrint for its HighEcon drying oven, with Soudronic taking the bronze with its Soucan 2075AF machine.

SCHULER CELEBRATES175 YEARS IN BUSINESSSchuler, the press manufacturer, is cele-brating 175 years in business. Founded by Louis Schuler in 1939 as a metalworking shop in Göppingen’s Sauerbrunnengasse, the company is now a global corporation with sales of almost €1.2 billion.

“There have been many milestones in Schuler’s success over the past 175 years,” says CEO Stefan Klebert, “and very few companies in Germany can look back on such a long and successful history.” To mark the occasion, Schuler’s celebrations will include a central event for employees at its base in Göppingen, Germany, to be held in July. In addition, a special web-site (www.schulergroup175.com) presents 175 minor and major moments which have shaped Schuler over the years.

AkzoNobel and Solvay have joined forces with Ernst & Young to develop a monitoring system that tracks and quantifies the use of renewable raw materials in paints, coatings and other applications.

The partnership builds on last year’s agree-ment between AkzoNobel and Solvay, where-by the company progressively increased the use of Solvay’s bio-based epichlorohydrin, or epicerol, in its coatings products.

Rather than buying epicerol directly from

Solvay, AkzoNobel obtains epoxy resins from a number of intermediate producers. The company then uses these epoxy resins as ingredients in various coatings.

Under this new agreement, Solvay, AkzoNobel and Ernst & Young will develop a “chain of custody methodology” to ensure that even in situations where no physical segregation of petro and bio-based materials is practised, volumes may still be assigned and reported.

BAMA RELEASES ANNUAL AEROSOL FILLING FIGURESThe UK aerosol filling figures have remained robust, figures released by the British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA) show.

Following two years of strong year on year increases, the sector has stabilised with overall growth of just 0.1%. In 2013, 1,466.5 million aerosol cans were filled in total within the UK, compared with 1,464.7 million units the previous year.

The trend towards the use of aluminium has continued, with now a virtual 50:50 split between aluminium and tinplate. In 2012, 740 million cans used tinplate and 707 million used aluminium; the latest (2013) data indi-cates that 729 million cans were tinplate with aluminium following closely at 727 million, a significant closing of the gap between the two materials.

Significant areas of growth were air fresh-eners, already an important category, some personal care segments, hard surface house-hold cleaners and industrial aerosols.

Dr John Morris, chief executive of BAMA, said: “It is gratifying that for the third succes-sive year the UK aerosol sector remains in excellent shape. In 2011 we saw a 9% year-on-year increase; in 2012 a 5% increase; and last year held steady, with a modest overall gain. This reflects the popularity amongst brand owners, retailers and consumers for what is a very efficient, sustainable and effec-tive form of packaging.”

European Aluminium Association (EAA) calls for higher recycling targets The European Aluminium Association (EAA) is calling for higher recycling targets and a phase out of landfilling of end-use recyclable goods.

The European aluminium industry strongly supports more ambitious recycling targets and a gradual phasing out of landfilling. Together with better collection schemes and innovative sorting technologies, these are the

preconditions for an effective and successful circular economy.

EAA director general Gerd Götz said: “Bold policy measures are needed to secure the availability of aluminium scrap in Europe, a key resource for increasing recycling rates and one of Europe’s energy security com-ponents. We are calling for investment and innovation in the fields of collection and

sorting, as well as great-er consistency in reporting procedures, clearer defini-tions of recycling and the recognition of aluminium as a ‘permanent material’.

“Stopping illegal scrap exports and reducing scrap leakage is also essential to reduce Europe’s depend-ency to resource and energy imports. The first and minimum step would be to set up credible metal scrap export monitoring systems.”

One billion ends for HTWHindustan Tin Works Ltd (HTW), celebrated the export of its “One billion’th end” at the Metal Packaging Plaza during the Interpack show, the world’s largest packaging exhibi-tion, held at Messe Dusseldorf, Germany.

On this occasion, the team was presented with a trophy by the “chief guest” for the event – Amanda Mattsson, Nestlé’s global category leader for metal packaging, global procurement. In her presentation, commend-ing HTW on this achievement, Mattsson said: “Nestlé and HTW have a longstanding relation-ship which goes back more than 30 years. HTW currently supplies Nestlé with world class quality metal cans, ends, printed and coated sheets, directly or indirectly, in about 10 countries around the world. I would like to congratulate the team at HTW for achieving this milestone and look forward to growing our strategic global relationship in the years to come.”

Sanjay Bhatia, managing director, Hindustan Tin Works Ltd, said: “Achieving this milestone is indeed a proud moment for all of us in HTW and celebrating the same during Interpack in the presence of our prestigious business partner Nestlé is a great honour.”

The latest European steel recycling fig-ures have been released by Apeal (the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging). In 2012, 2.7 million tonnes of steel packaging were recycled to make new steel products, corresponding to an average European rate of 74%.

The rate of steel packaging recycling has increased threefold over the last 20 years due to a number of factors, including its infinite recyclability, the ease with which steel can be recovered from the waste stream, and an understanding of the resource and emissions savings to be gained.

Alexander Mohr, secretary general of Apeal, commented: “These figures evidence a continued dedication to the recycling of steel packaging and just how big an impact it can have in driving up rates. While steel maintains its position as the most recycled packaging material in Europe, it is clear there is still some work to be done in order for the industry to hit its vision of 80% recycling rate by 2020. Apeal has no doubt that these targets will be achieved, especially when you consider that the top five recycling countries in Europe already have an average steel recy-cling rate of 90%.”

APEAL RELEASESEUROPEAN STEELRECYCLING FIGURES Guangxi Beihai Jinmeng Zhiguan AG, or Beihai

Jinmeng, is a recently founded company that has had success in the Chinese market due to a cupping press for the production of bev-erage cans supplied by Schuler.

Last year, Beihai Jinmeng launched pro-duction of beverage cans at its new facility in which it had invested around €80 million. The facility includes Schuler’s DA 140 cup-ping press. “The Schuler press displays a high degree of stability in continuous opera-tion, with relatively low operating costs and maintenance investments,” explains project manager Tan Jintu of Beihai Jinmeng’s production technology division.

“Because of the comparatively higher wear, similar machines with sliding jib systems require regular adjustment and maintenance – or even the replacement of the sliding jibs – to ensure stable operation.”

Due to the immense dynamic loads involved, cupping presses operating at high speeds and with heavy weights always run the risk of unevenly distributing the press force across the two sides – with negative consequences for the quality of the dies and products. Schuler’s DA 140 cupping press therefore has a dynamic counterbalance system, which balances out the machine vibrations caused by high press forces during operation.

WingTab, of Austin, Texas, is launching a replacement wide format design for ring pulls on cans. According to Chris Schorre, CEO of WingTab, “We want to offer marketers and beverage producers a new promotion and branding tool. We think WingTab is highly desirable because everyone who opens a can looks at the pull tab. It’s impossible to ignore. You see it every time you take a drink.”

According to the company’s website, the wide format surface of WingTab opens up intriguing promotional possibilities for use as a detach-able retail coupon, contest promotion tool, or a way to drive online traffic or social media interaction. WingTab was issued a utility patent in the US (8,695,245) on April 15, 2014 and has patents pending in Europe, Japan, China, Brazil and 24 additional countries worldwide.

own a can plant in Kuwait set up Ecanco in Egypt, which started production in 1996 with a steel can line. In time it became a Rexam licensee, giving it an insight, a deep understanding of the business and of management.

Then came Crown, whose exit from the Argentinian market following the economic crisis at the turn of the century not only left Rexam as the sole player but continued the South America/African connection as the plant was moved to Tunisia and started up in 2005. Canpack has also entered the North African market, with a plant that started operation in 2011.

Also during this period, there was activity as a number of can makers and can equipment suppli-ers reviewed the growing can markets in Nigeria and Angola, which were being supplied by imports. The first move was taken by an independent, which was a brave step, facing not only the considerable challenges of operating in these markets but also being new to the industry. GZ Industries and its-CEO, Motti Gold, approached Rexam when I was in South America. Following a number of discus-sions it was felt that the best option was to offer support with a technical team from South America and Roeslein, who were well used to opening plants in remote locations and dealing with the associated risks. These efforts led to the opening of a plant in Nigeria in 2010, where the aluminium line is now running at full capacity.

In line with its strategy to grow its business across Africa and having supported the market with

Africa may not have been at the top of the agenda for many in the beverage can industry over the past decade, but as I have found from my own experience

there has been a surprising amount of develop-ment. Looking forward to the next 10 years, I can see an accelerating trend of development along with the usual lumps and bumps that one experi-ences in the so called emerging markets.

I believe the pioneers of beverage cans in Africa were Metal Box, now Nampak, in South Africa, who started production of steel DWI cans in the late 1970s.

They were joined by Rheem, who tried to bring aluminium cans to the market, but found this an unprofitable venture, as a result of very competitive steel prices and a strong relationship between the incumbent supplier and the customers. It left the market in 2001, leaving Nampak as the sole player in southern Africa having built four plants. It had eight lines running steel at the end of 2013.

The Rheem equipment was bought by Latasa to support the growing regional Brazilian market. The Latasa acquisition by Rexam two years later in 2003 secured its leading position in Brazil. It was then that I first became involved in the African market. I was based in Rio at the time as the finance and integration director, and this was when I inves-tigated beverage can and the supply of can end stock opportunities.

The next entrant to the market was in North Africa. The owners of the Pepsi franchise who

growing exports, Nampak made a decision to expand into Angola. It overcame some very significant challenges to open a plant in 2011 with a steel line.

Africa also has its own beverage can supplier base, including Hulamin in South Africa with its world class rolling mill in Pietermaritzburg, which has supplied high quality and competitive can end and tab stock globally since the mid 1990s. It has a particularly wide range of unusual coloured tab and end stock and non-beverage canning products.

Quaker, a leading supplier of process solutions to the metalworking industries around the globe, also has a manufacturing facility in Durban. It sees Africa as a key region in its growth strategies and as John Booker, global can sales manager, told me: “We are already active in South Africa, Angola, Nigeria and Kenya, supplying process chemicals to beverage can makers and steel producers.”

So, in Africa at the beginning of 2013 according to my estimates there were 14 fully operational steel and aluminium can lines in nine plants, with a capacity of steel and aluminium of around 9bn units. The overall market doubled in size in the dec-ade to around 8bn units. There is also a world class aluminium rolling mill and infrastructure currently supplying 70,000 tonnes across the world and a growing infrastructure of suppliers. We have seen a huge and accelerating amount of activity, and by the end of 2015, eight or perhaps 10 new lines will have been installed. However, we have seen a huge and accelerating amount of activity, and by the end of 2015, eight or perhaps 10 new lines will have been installed and a number of lines will have been speeded up.

Nampak announced to its investors that it had secured its position in South Africa with a major investment plan to convert from steel to aluminium tied to long-term customer contracts. The initial stage of the investment has been announced and with the installation of a high speed line at its Springs plant it has said that these will be followed by further conversions and speed ups.

My experience, based on consumer research, is that the majority of end users find it difficult to differentiate between steel and aluminium bever-age cans, but it’s the perception of marketeers that

aluminium cans are preferred. However, the stability provided by the ability to hedge aluminium, the rel-atively lower aluminium prices of recent years and an announced price reduction means it’s a winning move for Nampak to secure its market position.

Nampak also announced in late 2013, that it is investing in a second line to support the growing Angolan market, where the government has been looking at imposing high import duties to under-pin domestic manufacturing and reduce imports. According to my beverage industry sources, another player in Angola has bought equipment for a bev-erage can line but when this is going to be active is not known.

In Nigeria, now officially the country with the largest GDP in Africa, GZI has increased the output of the line at Agbara, through a series of speed ups, and it’s now running at globally benchmarked effi-ciencies. GZI has also started to build a plant in Aba in eastern Nigeria, which is due to come on stream late this year. The plant, built by Alucan, was sold to Nampak for $300 million.

So, Africa is growing and there are huge oppor-tunities for those who will invest. Growth, as in all emerging markets, will not be linear – there will be ups and downs in demand in different regions. There will be huge physical, meteorological and personal challenges as plants are built. But, as I have been told often in Africa, there are AfriCans! CT

JUNE 2014

Stolle had a period of around eight to 10 years where they were focusing on existing technology, but since their acquisition in 2011 by Toyo

Seikan, this has changed quite dramatically. Equity owners tend not to consider R&D an important part of what they want, but the new collaboration has turned things on its axis.

“With the coming of the ownership of Toyo Seikan, one of the things they indicated was that they bought Stolle because of our technology. They were also a customer for 25 or 30 years and from there we said, ‘let’s get back into the business of development’,” said Bob.

At Metpack this year they brought with them the culmination of two years of R&D and millions of dollars worth of investment in technology, in the shape of five brand new machines that could revo-lutionise the business of can making.

“It’s really a good feeling as many of us, as you know, have grown up in the industry and that’s what we [Stolle] were known for. We used to come to shows with new pieces of kit and new pieces of equipment and for a long time it’s been ‘here’s a placard, here’s what we do’, so to have new equip-ment like this is really neat and it’s really fun to be back in that kind of business again.”

The effort came not only from the Ohio side of the business but also the Denver side, and both teams put together some fantastic work. “Now it’s a matter of getting the machines in place,” he said.

“They’ll be shipped back to each location for final tweaks after the show and then they’ll be put into can and end making plants. We’ll run them for about six months so that we have a good feel, and from there they’ll be commercialised.”

The new machines in question are the CS-300

Richard Piper speaks with Bob Gary, executive vice president of global solutions at Stolle Machinery Company, about the can making industry and the part Stolle plays

Conversion System; the Vector bodymaker; a new ram guidance system; the Saber can trimmer; and a new Linear Liner.

“The Linear Liner is already scheduled for a plant when it gets back,” said Bob, “and the ram guidance system is going into a can plant to be put into operation. The trimmer is the only piece really that has been run for six months so far. We ran it at Toyo Seikan’s plant in Japan and they’ve ordered 48 of them.”

Talking about the new bodymaker, and the other innovations the company presented at the show, Bob said: “On a bodymaker, when you go vertical, you’re controlling the cup more, since you don’t have any drag. In a normal bodymaker you have some deviation on the ram coming back, whereas in going vertical you’re actually controlling that cup. With all of this equipment, it’s interesting to hear the questions - some people have come up, major players, and asked how they get in line to test this equipment. And on the conversion press, people have asked, ‘where’s the other part of the press?’

“They’re used to seeing a big conversion press sticking up in the air, and we say ‘no, that is it’ and they are amazed that we’re able to do what we did with that space and still produce 1,000 strokes per minute.”

Bob was overtly excited about each and every new machine Stolle had on display. He cannot wait until the commercialisation starts after all of the testing phases are finished, as, he said, “that’s going to be the fun part”.

But it doesn’t stop with these five new machines. The process of R&D is ongoing and development is already in place for the next set of innovations – in three years there might be a stand full of more equipment that no one has ever seen.

“I don’t think there’s anything, in my humble opinion, that we’ve built that is not going to be able to get into the market.”

Many will wonder what it’s like to be owned by a can maker, and many will perhaps wonder if it puts that can maker at a slightly unfair advantage. However, there’s a very strict fire-wall between the two companies, but the nice thing about working with Toyo Seikan, said Bob, is that Stolle is able to bounce ideas off of their technical people and vice versa.

“When we get something like a trimmer, we can move it to one of their plants, run it, test it and see how it does. We did that mid last year and now, as I said, Toyo has ordered 48.

INTERVIEW: STOLLE

“As they’re a parent, just like any other par-ent, they see aggregate numbers, you know, how did you do this month and things like that, but they never have broken the firewall where they say ‘what’s Ball buying, what’s Rexam buying’ etc. They know that we sell to major can makers and we were complimented with that recently.

“When the takeover first happened, Gus Reall, our CEO, and people from Toyo Seikan all visited major can players and said ‘hey there’s not going to be a sharing of informa-tion’. There’s a legal firewall that prevents them from asking and us giving and it’s never been broken. Gus and I were at a meeting in Ball Corporate and they commented that we’ve really lived up to our promise not to share information.”

When you look at the influence of Toyo Seikan it’s really in Japan according to Bob. They have some outside lines in Thailand and in China but other than that the company is not in the Americas, Europe or South America.

“They have a plant in Iran, which is a TULC line, which they did before we became a part of them, but that’s the only place that’s a long distance away. They’ve been fun to work with. Their management style is obviously different to ours, but they’ve realised that hey, these Western guys know what they’re doing.”

Exciting times lie ahead for Stolle. The new developments have been completed and there are more on the books that it hopes to bring to the next Metpack in three years time. It can certainly take that long to develop new technologies.

On the industry in general, Bob said that he is very optimistic about the future of can making.

“We are seeing that business is on the up,” he said. “China seems to be doing very well for us and the Middle East is also doing very well.

“Looking forward, we don’t see India sky-rocketing in the next couple of years, but it’s going to change. Maybe by 2016, 2017, India will get to a point like China did where the middle class rose up and didn’t have to worry whether you could buy a can of Coke or a bowl of rice – it was pretty easy back then. And I think the same thing is going to happen in India.”

Bob thinks the industry is still on a good rise, and says that he’s been in the industry long enough to know that there’s always a dip, but doesn’t think it’s going to be a dip ‘like we knew in the old days’.

“It’ll notch down a little bit but I think it will still be a growth opportunity.”

On overcapacity issues, Bob says that he

What’s new?CS-3000 Conversion SystemFeatures• The same production as the Stolle Tetrad• Saves floor space• Reduced loads and stroke• Lower priceThe new concept CS-3000 has the same pro-duction capacity as the Tetrad in a much smaller machine. Customers can achieve up to $2.65m in savings per end module. The machine requires 20 per cent less floor space than the Tetrad and less than half the height clearance.

Vector BodymakerFeatures• Space savings• Increased production• Improved can quality• Energy savings• Lower cost of productionAccording to Stolle, one vector bodymaker will replace two traditional machines, and will cost less than two traditional machines combined, giving customers a faster return on investment. The vertical ram design is oil-free and allows for faster and easier can size changeovers as well as more efficient production.

Stolle Ram Guidance KitFeatures• Increases bodymaker efficiency• Reduces bodymaker downtime• Greatly reduces oil consumption• Reduces bodymaker operating cost• More consistent can qualityPareto studies show that 20 per cent downtime of a bodymaker is primarily due to tear-outs

caused by uneven wear and metal contamina-tion of the third ironing ring. The new ram design eliminates droop and misalignment and increases bodymaker uptime from 80 per cent to over 90 per cent - leading to potential increased production of up to 50,000 cans per day.

The Stolle Saber Can TrimmerFeatures• Simpler, more robust cutting mechanism• Trimming head features fixed inner and outer knife centres• The three trimming heads are easily removable• Simplifies maintenance and removing the knives for sharpening and/or replacementOther trimmers move the cans to the cutting knives, whereas the Stolle Saber moves the cutting heads to the cans. They then stay in the same alignment to the domer in the bodymaker throughout the trimming process. This allows for simpler and more reliable crossover track-work.

The Stolle Linear LinerFeatures• Simpler • Cleaner• More productive• Uses less compound• Easier to maintain• More energy efficient• Lower cost of ownershipStolle analysed all the issues with rotary liners and created a totally new approach to end lining. The new liner has been designed to elim-inate many of the issues faced by rotary liners. Individual lining stations can be removed for cleaning and maintenance while the liner is still in production while still maintaining full system productivity.

worries about places like China and the state of the market there.

“I’m sure if you talk to the major players they will say ‘good heavens, there’s so many cans, and you can’t sell them cheap forever’. The Middle East is a little different – there’s still a lot of capacity – but right now a lot of companies are shipping cans into Iran because we can’t put equipment there.”

For Bob and Stolle, the main thing is that they’re having fun again. “It’s exciting,” he said, “when someone comes up to you and says what’s this? And you explain it and they say ‘wow, that’s something else!’”

Many can makers are clamouring for Stolle’s new machines, asking just what they have to do to get in line to place an order, and for any equipment supplier, this can

only bring a smile to the faces of all involved. CT

ries around Japan and has 17 can lines, all producing aluminium beverage cans.

Two of the can lines produce bottle cans only, while another line is a swing line pro-ducing both bottle cans and conventional bever-age cans. The rest of the can lines produce conventional drinks cans.

“Most of our bottle can and regular can produc-tion is for Japan. We have supplied 400ml empty bottle cans for chocolate drinks to the United States,” Hanafusa said. “We export empty bottle cans to China as well, to fill with ginseng tea and high priced health drinks, and empty 200ml, 300ml and 350ml bottle cans to Taiwan and Singapore.”

Universal Can is one of four can makers pro-ducing bottle cans in Japan. While Universal Can produces only aluminium bottle cans, other man-ufacturers also produce tin-free steel and tinplate bottle cans.

According to industry figures, total bottle can consumption in Japan is about 2.3bn units a year. “2007 was a big year for metal bottle cans; 2.4bn units were used because of big demand for carbonated soft drinks. The number went down because a big drinks company stopped using bottle cans for this category,” Hanafusa said.

“The low point was 2009, when 2bn metal

After receiving an initial boost from car-bonated beverage companies, the use of bottle cans received a further boost several years ago when coffee drinks

companies started to use bottle cans as resealable packaging.

For Universal Can Corporation, Japan’s larg-est supplier of bottle can drinks (2012 figures), increased consumption of coffee drinks in bottle cans has been an important factor, lifting demand for the company’s range of bottle can products.

“Some bottle cans are used to pack ground regu-lar coffee, but mostly they are used for liquid coffee drinks,” explained Tatsuya Hanafusa, general man-ager of Universal Can’s overseas business strategy division.

“Now we supply 300ml and 400ml bottle cans for coffee; we used to have 315ml, 350ml and 290ml with 33mm diameter necks, but customers helped us to consolidate production to two bottle can sizes with 38mm diameter necks, enabling us to improve output to cater for increasing demand.”

Universal Can was formed by the earlier merger of Mitsubishi Materials Corporation’s can making division, which has an 80 per cent share in the company, and Hokkai Holdings Ltd, which has a 20 per cent share. Universal Can operates six facto-

bottle cans were used. Then the number increased again thanks to coffee drinks. Coffee drinks are the biggest user of bottle cans, then tea drinks and third is carbonated soft drinks.”

Universal Can currently supplies almost half of all bottle cans used in Japan, 80 per cent of which are used for coffee drinks.

Aluminium units hold the largest share of the bottle can market, while steel two-piece and three-piece bottle cans together account for less than 10 per cent of Japan’s total bottle can market.

“We have three bottle can lines. Our dedicated main line can produce 1,500 cans per minute, which is the same speed as a conventional two-piece can line,” Hanafusa said. “Our other dedicat-ed bottle can line runs at 800 cpm.

“We also have a 1,400 cpm swing line that can produce bottle cans and conventional two-piece cans. We can choose whichever cans to make with this depending on the market situation.”

“Our total production is 4.8bn cans per year. In the future, maybe the bottle can market will be stable in Japan,” Hanafusa said.

The 350ml can is the common size for regular two-piece cans in Japan. Universal Can also pro-duces 135ml, 160ml, 180ml, 190ml, 200ml and 250ml stubby and slim two-piece cans. In addition, the company makes 280ml stubby cans and a 500ml can size. The range is wide enough to meet most requirements.

EMBOSSED CANS“The biggest markets for regular two-piece cans are beer and Japanese chuhai spirit mixed drinks, while for bottle cans it’s coffee drinks,” Hanafusa commented. “We are making an old style nostalgic embossed regular can for whisky highball in 350ml and 500ml sizes. The embossing is the same design as the old Suntory glass whisky bottle.

“We have several other embossed can patterns

for ready to drink mixed chuhai drinks. These embossed designs look like long rice grains.”

Meanwhile, Universal Can is one of two Japanese can manufacturers using waterless printing for mass produced aluminium cans. Hanafusa noted the company has also developed a laser engraved printing system.

“The precision of the laser engraved system is between conventional and waterless printing; so this means good looks. We call it the Universal Printing System,” Hanafusa said. “The ink is basically the same as that used on a conventional can.

“Several foreign companies are interested in our technology. We are still developing it to reduce the cost of that system. We are talking with some com-panies about licensing our technology.

“Also, we are looking to reduce filling costs, as bottle cans are different to glass bottles. We have to advise some of our future customers about can filling machinery technology.”

Meanwhile, Universal Can continues to look for new ways to reduce regular and bottle can produc-tion costs. Hanafusa noted the company, through technology developed by Mitsubishi Materials Group, is able to use 100 per cent recycled alumini-um to make bottle cans and caps, though the firm’s can ends are made of virgin aluminium.

“Our company pays attention to cost reduction. For regular two-piece cans, for example, we supply 0.25mm sheets for some major brand beer cans, which is very thin,” Hanafusa said. “We can make any lightweight can wall thinness but customers do not want cheap cans as it is easy to get a pinhole in the containers, which is not good for their sales.

“For some countries, the lighter and cheaperthe cans are, the better the can cost is within the range of market acceptance.” It comes down to customer preference, and Universal Can is very well placed to deliver. CT

VISUAL INSPECTION

JUNE 2014

mon opinion was: why spend money on something which is not vital for the production process?

Another stumbling block was the operability of the inspection software, which was usually based on Dos. People with computer knowledge could handle it – for everyone else on the shop floor it was almost magic. In some cases, operators refused to work with this new technology so persistently that the management had no choice but to give up on their ambitious quality inspection project.

Broader acceptance came slowly but surely in the second half of the 1990s. Machine vision proved to be stable, warranted consistently high product qual-ity and more than that: in the end it saved money.

An inspection system of that time appears like a dinosaur to us today, with its bulky cathode ray tube screen used for operation. Almost 15 years ago it did its job, eg inspecting 15 ends per second in a three-shift production – and unbelievably enough, some of these systems are still in operation. See image below (A).

Another big issue was print inspection, especially on cylindrical containers like tubes or cans. The introduction of line-scan cameras was the break-

The first equipment units were huge com-pared to what we see today. Lighting was realised by fluorescent tubes, halogen lamps, or whatever seemed to be bright

and stable enough in those days of pioneering work. The first inspection units ran on special computer hardware which was quite expensive and difficult to maintain. One important step towards affordable standard systems for metal packaging was the rapid progress in PC technology. Although no real office PCs were used in vision inspection systems, now standard components with standard operating systems were available.

With a performance of approximately 100 MHz, such computers were stretched to the limit in fast running production processes. To keep pace, only absolutely vital algorithms could be executed and often simply every second pixel was evaluated.

Another bottleneck was the transfer rate of the frame grabber – the interface between camera and computer. Despite all problems, the automated visual inspection worked, not least because camera technology had also made a few leaps forward.

Digital matrix cameras with short shutter times (approximately 20 frames per second), which could be triggered asynchronously, opened up a wide field of applications. A clocked transport was no longer required since these cameras were triggered by a sensor signal and every object was recorded in the best possible position on the conveyor. This capa-bility perfectly suited the needs of bulk production and, as would seem natural, can end inspection was among the first areas in which vision systems were integrated into the production equipment for inline real-time quality control. One of these systems was Tema’s CCI, named DOKS at that time.

In retrospect it seems strange that convincing metal packaging producers of the reliability and even the necessity of automated visual inspection systems seemed to be the hardest part. The com-

Industrial image processing, or machine vision, has come a long way since the firstautomated visual inspection systems took up employment in metal packaging production.

Engineers of companies like Tema, today a part of the Mühlbauer Group, who witnessed the very beginnings of machine vision, remember it well

THE HISTORY OF A ZERO DEFECT CONCEPT

cantechonline.com 21JUNE 2014

through point. The idea seemed simple. When rotating a cylindrical object, eg an aluminium tube or a monobloc aerosol can, which happens in most printing processes anyway, why not scan the surface line by line and combine all the image information into one image – like unrolling the can and laying it flat on the table?

The principle had long since been known from fax machines or scanners. The devil was in the detail. This approach required a perfect synchro-nisation of rotation velocity data and image data. Rotation was fast and velocity often varied in printing units of that time. Tubes and cans slipped on the mandrel – all permanent error sources since image processing required nothing less than a per-fect image, undistorted and highly defined. It took years until this technology was good enough for a reliable and stable inspection solution.

A MATTER OF COURSESome system providers favoured the idea of using a sensor array, which made a very compact unit together with the LED illumination hardware; oth-ers relied on line-scan cameras. Tema was one of the first companies to install such camera systems for print inspection in tube and can printing units, and solutions of that kind are still an important part of Mühlbauer’s Tema Vision portfolio. No matter which brand, automated visual inspection systems are a matter of course in tube and can printing today. The truth is, you can no longer sell your products without automated visual control. Zero defect policy has become standard.

Camera technology has also undergone a striking development (see image B above). Engineers who witnessed the beginning of machine vision still know the first big matrix cameras for asynchronous, high-speed shutter imaging. Today, such a camera is just a cube with an edge length of 5cm and image data is transferred to the computer via a network. We have intelligent cameras with a section almost as small as a stamp, including the processor for data

evaluation. And this is just a snapshot of the breath-taking progress of options and ideas.

The introduction of graphical user interfaces, eg Windows, laid the basis for more user friendliness and operator acceptance. Connecting to databases, remote maintenance around the globe, linked multi camera and computer systems, parallel processing with Pentium Dual-Core… all of this is normal business today and a big “playground” for realising the ideas and visions of software programmers encouraged by customers’ neverending desires.

But what are the major consequences? One is drop in prices. Decline in hardware prices is not the only reason. Rising acceptance within the packag-ing industry has led to standard inspection solutions for mass production. Vision systems for a variety of applications have grown smaller and more favoura-ble in price. Machine vision seems to fit everywhere, and is almost invisible sometimes. The race is on: who can do things even faster, smaller and cheaper?

What metal packaging producers think about today is a fully automatic final inspection to defi-nitely exclude all potential flaws. The still young history of machine vision has made one thing very clear: dreaming about the future can turn into reality very quickly. CT

CURING SYSTEMS

JUNE 2014

When these chemistries are exposed to an appro-priate dosage and intensity of the proper wave-length of UV light, these inks, coatings and adhe-sives immediately harden. This creates a faster, more efficient cure than traditional heat-based alternatives. Traditional (non-UV) formulations work by evaporating solvents to cure the chemistry. The evaporation of solvent based materials creates environmental pollutants, making ultraviolet curing a more attractive option.

The most common source for producing the UV energy required to activate photo initiators is the “arc lamp”. An arc lamp produces ultraviolet energy by generating an electric arc inside a quartz glass lamp filled with specific gas mixes and mercu-ry. The arc excites the mercury and vapourises it. This process results in the lamp emitting ultraviolet wavelengths that are used to cure chemistry.

More recently there has been an even more environmentally friendly solution to curing technol-ogy: UV LED curing. LEDs (light emitting diodes) produce light by generating a voltage across a solid state semiconductor device that joins positive holes with negative electrons and can ultimately emit photons. This type of ultraviolet curing creates a high intensity curing solution that produces far less heat than its arc lamp based predecessor.

Even with arc lamp based ultraviolet curing solutions being a far more environmentally green

The curing of inks, coatings and adhesives with ultraviolet energy (known as UV curing) is a technology that has been around for over half a century. UV cur-

ing has many incredible benefits and the markets and applications for this technology seem to con-tinue growing and evolving almost daily. Ultraviolet curing is a photochemical process using ultraviolet energy at a high intensity to cure UV-reactive chemistry in applications such as automotive finish-es, adhesive bonding, optical coatings, screen print-ing, and surface coating – to name just a few. UV curing is often used to replace traditional curing and drying processes for various reasons, including faster production times, quick analysis and reduc-tion of reject rates in the production process, and no loss of thickness and volume of the coating. Many processes are designed specifically to include UV curing due to these advantages.

As previously mentioned, ultraviolet curing works as a photochemical reaction. Liquid monomers and oligomers are mixed with a small amount of photo initiators to create UV-curable chemistry.

solution to solvent based heat curing solu-tions, there are still a variety of regulatory items that surround the ultraviolet curing marketplace. While LED technology is on the horizon, the majority of curing solutions still rely heavily on arc lamp based ultravio-let lights. These arc lamps typically contain mercury, something which is heavily regulat-ed by state and federal government agencies in the US. Businesses typically are required to report mercury usage and sales to agen-cies such as IMERC every three years, as well as additional agencies yearly.

These agencies leave a constant open door for inspections, paperwork trails, and even regulations for the disposal of mercury based arc lamps after use or replacement. Safety and developed guidelines are incred-ibly important in handling mercury within manufacturing, use, and ultimately disposal in the life cycle of the product. LED UV technology could dramatically impact the reporting required by these agencies in the future based on the fact that they do not contain mercury, thus are far more envi-ronmentally friendly and could be a far less reporting-intensive product.

Spot curing is the most common appli-cation of LED UV at this time. The small overall applied surface area of spot curing application is a feasible economic solution for the many LEDs that are placed together to create the spot cure. This same econom-ic feasibility is not so conclusive on larger conveyor systems. Spot curing typically at 3-6mm is the perfect platform for the known capabilities of LED UV at this stage in research and development.

LED UV has proven to be beneficial beyond its environmental impact, creating justification to continue exploring how to grow and develop its uses. For one, LEDs have virtually no operating and mainte-nance costs. These lights have no annoying

CURING SYSTEMS

lamp or filter replacements that arc lamp based spot curing systems suffer from, as well as an incredibly low energy consumption in comparison to its predecessor. Additionally, LEDs have a long lifespan and consistent output over that lifetime. They typically last far beyond 15,000 hours and up to 20,000 hours, while maintaining the desired output throughout their lifespan. LED based spot cures are able to have an instant on/off function, providing even more productivity. Finally, LEDs provide a cooler cure temper-ature, which makes it attractive to use on heat sensitive materials such as thin films, papers, plastics and overall cooler cures, pro-viding even less of a chance of melting or warping the substrate and creating defects.

LIMITATIONS The research and development aspect of this kind of technology will be a hard investment for many companies to take in product development. LED UV currently has distinct limitations based on wavelength availability. LED only has single wavelength availability in most scenarios, while arc lamp UV has the availability of multiple peak wavelengths in curing solution custo-misation. The wavelength of LED is also stationary at specific intervals of 365, 385, or 400 + nm, as opposed to the range that an arc lamp solution provides of anywhere between 250-600nm.

If limited wavelengths and ink chemistry availability weren’t enough, the current cost of the volume of individual LEDs needed to replace longer length UV arc lamps in larger applications will be cost-prohibitive to most would-be early adopters. As adop-tion of UV LED technology increases, the volume will eventually bring costs down sig-nificantly, but it’s difficult to speculate how low the costs will eventually go and how this will compare to the cost of comparable arc lamp UV systems at that time.

It is likely that larger LED UV systems will always have a larger initial cost than arc lamp systems, however this initial cost difference could be offset by lower operat-ing and maintenance costs over the life of the system.

There is no doubt the technology will have a large impact on curing solutions in the future, but it will be a volatile path for many businesses to follow in the early stages. With the many benefits of LED UV – including cooler cures, “greener” products and long lasting consistent output – it’s a potential solution that cannot be ignored. CTLED’s can last up to 20,000 hours

Glass has been the best choice for bottles since the bottle was invented, but bottles manufactured on Belvac machinery are providing a cost effective aluminium

alternative to traditional glass bottle packaging. The main cost of producing a bottle is the mate-

rials, and glass is cheap. Impact extruded (IE) alu-minium bottles have shown up in several markets and for the most part as promotional products, but the amount of material required to produce a con-tainer has kept the cost high.

But new technology is changing that. Belvac machines are using Drawn and Ironed (D&I) pre-forms to produce bottles with nearly 40 per cent less aluminium than traditional IE methods. A 16oz aluminium bottle produced by IE methods weighs around 50g, but 16oz D&I bottles in supermarkets today are only 31g. This has created a better finan-cial model for branded aluminium containers and is allowing brands to create mainstream offerings for their beverages.

For a bottle, the reduced weight also means reduced logistical costs. Just one glass bottle weighs

Shaping and light weighting innovations from Belvac Production Machinery are changing the way companies look at aluminium packaging for distinctively shaped bottles and cans. around 180g, that’s equivalent to a six-pack of D&I aluminium cans and makes a big difference when it comes to shipping costs. The breakage costs that are associated with glass are also non-existent with aluminium bottles.

These factors bring the overall life cycle price of aluminium and glass close, but what makes another difference in the drive to replace glass bottles with aluminium is the premium price that consumers are willing to pay for aluminium bottles.

Consumers in markets ranging from the United States to Asia have shown a willingness to pay pre-miums of up to 100 per cent or more for alumini-um bottles over the same products in glass or PET containers, even when the aluminium bottle is a smaller size. In some cases this can equate to a price that is up to three times higher per ounce.

Consumers pay this premium because aluminium packaging has several advantages in the consumer experience. It can be chilled faster, so that warm beverages from the grocery store will be ready to drink sooner. It also feels colder to the touch, which can make the drinking experience more pleasurable in the heat of summer. And aluminium containers can’t break. Many locations, such as pools and beaches, where many people want to enjoy a cold beer, don’t allow glass bottles because of the safety

hazard presented if they are broken. There would be no problem bringing an aluminium bottle to the beach.

Proven customer preferences for aluminium containers have driven category growth and strongly influenced customer brand switching patterns. The new push in the market for branded shaped cans and bottles is further exemplifying this pattern.

D&I produced aluminium bottles are a very green technology. Not only does it use much less material than traditional aluminium processes, aluminium packages in general are almost twice as likely to be recycled. In 2013, 34 per cent of glass packages were recycled, compared to 65 per cent of aluminium packages. Changing a product’s packaging from glass to aluminium can significantly reduce waste, protecting the environ-ment and promoting a green company image.

Belvac is confident that its Shaper and Bottle Can Manufacturing System (BCMS) can deliver the highest quality shaped aluminium cans and bottles at a low cost.

Many can makers are cautious about adopting new shaped can or bottle lines. In many cases this is being driven by their lack of long-term confidence in market demand. Belvac is investing heavily in this young market because it believes these recent cost and technology breakthroughs

will establish long term and increasing demand for these containers in the marketplace. Recent investments by both can makers and brands support this position.

Belvac is further taking the risk out of opening new shaped D&I aluminium can lines by partner-ing with can manufacturers from the design pro-cess to installation, commissioning and beyond.

Technology has made aluminium not only a viable alternative, but also a very attractive alter-native in the glass dominated bottle market, and breakthroughs in light weighting shaped cans is also changing the financial models associated with their production, making it an attractive option. It will be exciting to see how these developments shape the packaging industry. CT

systems to save energy and waste. This is what has made us so busy for the last years and if you walk around the exhibition you will see a lot of technol-ogies that show this.”

CANTECH INTERNATIONAL AT METPACKThis year saw us pulling out all of the stops and investing in what can only be described as a ‘unique’ feature for our stand. Those present will not easily forget the towering silhouette of a bona fide Routemaster London bus in the heart of Hall 3. The bus was driven for three days from Wales in the UK, and arrived ahead of schedule in time for the CanTech team to meet it on Monday morning.

The lower deck was transformed into a showcase for the magazine and website, along with several hundred red ‘squeezy’ buses to give away to dele-gates, while the upper deck served as a comfortable lounge and meeting room for those that visited to chat about the industry.

Our thanks again go to London Pride and Chang Beer, who kindly sponsored our bar and provided welcome refreshment to visitors both during the show and after the final bell had rung at impromptu stand parties.

Interest in our shows, Asia CanTech 2014 and

Metpack was the eighth such event to take place at Messe Essen, Germany, and proved to be bigger and more international than ever before. Some

243 companies from 27 nations were present, among them all the major players within the indus-try with vast and impressive stands, all the way down to one and two person organisations who were walking the floors of the two giant halls occu-pied by the show.

Wolfgang Niemsch, managing director of Lanico and chairman of the Metpack Committee, said: “In 2012 there was a slump in the industry, but since Spring 2013 we are experiencing strong growth in the metal packaging industry. What is important for all of our exhibitors’ balance sheets is that they are earning more money again after a lot of years, where even major companies hardly earned any money and there was a strong price war within the market. Major customers are now ready to invest again in new technology and also to increase their capacity.

“Since 2011, all of the major exhibitors from 1993 have introduced new machines, equipment and technologies. They are continuing to increase floor space and this shows that for these exhibitors this is the most important show for them.”

Niemsch said that the Committee is proud to be the number one industry show, and commented that when the exhibition comes to a close, exhibi-tors will immediately start to think of what they can show at the next event.

On the industry as a whole, he said: “We are working more on reducing waste and material thicknesses in the industry from an environmental viewpoint. We are looking to modify production

Euro CanTech 2015, was overwhelming, and we look forward to seeing all who signed up to attend at Metpack this year. If you didn’t have a chance to enquire about either show and would like some more information, please do contact Megan Freeman at [email protected].

SHOW CONFERENCEThe conference that ran alongside the show was very interesting to attend and included high-level presentations from key figures within the industry.

Hans-Hermann Bibel, managing director at Vision Experts, gave a presentation on the VE4000+ System – a camera based inspection solution that offers a wide range of benefits.

He commented: “Our camera systems are able to inspect whole sheets, and once the system finds a small defect we can catch it. The system can find inking problems, text defects, spots, colour register and scumming. All flaws are logged and are stored on a database. Images of the defects are stored to a protocol and can then be shown to the customer.”

Bibel explains that his company want to optimise the process in order to save on metal sheets, saying that if there is an ongoing problem for more than 50 sheets, then the system will stop the process.

“Quality levels can be set according to product needs. The quality of each batch is recorded and each batch is traceable,” he says. “The system saves waste and 100 per cent inspection reduces the risk of callbacks.”

Also of great interest was a presentation by Sebastiano Brenni, managing director at Salchi Metalcoat. Brenni is involved in the Biocopac project, an EU funded consortium that is develop-ing natural bio-lacquers for the metal packaging industry. He explains that by removing Cutin from tomato waste, it is possible to create a natural bio-lacquer that is more than capable of protecting metal cans and closures.

“Cutin is a component of the cuticle of tomato skins. It contains a natural polyester bio-polymer

that could eventually replace petroleum for the synthesis of polymers.

“The product complies with EU, US and Chinese regulations and creates an alternative to BPA coatings.”

WHAT’S NEW IN 2-PIECE CAN MAKING EQUIPMENT? ADRIAN LONG REPORTS There were a number of exciting new products for two-piece can makers to crawl over during the five days of Metpack.

UK oven manufacturer, Greenbank Technology Ltd, used the exhibition to publicise its first two-piece can washer. The machine, named Torrent One, jointly developed with Rexam Europe, fits in front of the company’s Tornado washer oven dryer which was developed and patented by Greenbank several years ago. The machine uses significantly less waste water and has less chemical carry over and usage due to innovative design features devel-oped in collaboration with Rexam. The mounting of pumps vertically rather than in the standard horizontal mode has reduced the width of the washer by 1.9 metres yet it still uses the standard 2.4

metre wide belt. Latest synthetic belt technology has been utilised for the washer mat and all mate-rials and components are European with machine assembly taking place in Poland. The first washer has now been completed and commissioning trials are due to take place in a European can plant mid-year.

Pressco Technology Inc, manufacturers of vision inspection systems for the packaging industry, demonstrated its latest innovation, the Outside Can Deco inspection system. Using a multi-camera system, cans are inspected on the pin-chain after the decorator and before the pin oven. Cans pass through a tunnel which is slightly over pressurised to prevent oil mist and ink mists affecting the camera lenses. Can stability for full 360 degree can inspection is achieved with a vacuum belt inside the tunnel.

The print image is learnt by the pc by passing a few hundred good quality cans through the sys-tem and the label image can be saved for future label runs. The system carries out colour inspec-tion and analysis using target zones to measure delta E values and can also detect other minor print defects such as spots, smears, smudges etc.

There is full correlation between blanket and mandrel so any blanket tears or mandrel issues can be detected. The system is also capable of purging defects from any blanket or mandrel and statistics are provided on % defects, defects per mandrel and blanket to assist fault finding using a friendly pc based operator interface. The first system is currently undergoing customer trials in a US can plant.

Sencon introduced the first non-contact back end gauge for measuring two-piece cans in the industry. Current technology uses contact sen-sors to measure a limited feature set in a few fixed positions around the can. When the can is touched by the sensors it can deform certain features as they are measured.

The non-contact optical gauge allows all features to be scanned in unlimited positions on the can. This greatly improves gauge accuracy, repeatability and stability of the gauge. All com-mon beverage can sizes can be measured without any gauge adjustment or the use of any change parts.

CarnaudMetalbox Engineering Ltd, based in the UK, exhibited its 5610 Bodymaker with patented dual stroke technology to enable can makers to make a larger range of cans on one machine but still retaining the bene-fits of shorter machine stroke for smaller cans. Also included in the machine are a number of energy saving measures in the hydraulic power pack, including an auto-matic hydraulic pump switch off when the machine is in standby mode.

INNOVATION AWARDSThe highly coveted Metpack Innovation Awards were held once more in 2014. Our own Neil McRitchie was on the panel of judges, and they took a full evening to decide on the winners – indeed, some sandwiches had to be sent in at one point due to the severe overrun of the meeting.

The Gold Award went to Matriruiz for its Spider Head Liner, a robotic device based on a delta robot, completely adapted and updated by the company’s engineering department. The machine forms a friction and space free articula-tion, allowing high speed and safety in the appli-cation of sealing compounds.

Antonio Garcia Puche, from the Matriruiz sales department, says of winning the award: “For us it’s really unexpected. We are a small company with big competitors and we only started on the project in October of 2013. We are really pleased to have won gold here at Metpack, it hasn’t really sunk in yet.”

Silver went to KBA-MetalPrint for its HighEcon drying oven, with Soudronic taking Bronze for its Soucan 2075 AF welding machine.

The Soucan 2075 operates at a speed of 1,200 cans per minute on 0.5kg cans of 0.12mm-gauge tinplate. It features a new de-stacker design for thin gauges and the new Uniwire system, which enables the machine to run at up to 140m per minute welding speed thanks to a precise and constant can cap and a new cut-scoring unit.

Sensory Analytics was also nominated for its new line of Specmatrix ACS systems. Vivek Komaragiri, technical director, said in a pres-entation that the systems can measure individual layers, the sheet itself or the lacquer, to see which layer is defective.

Up to 50 measurements per second can be taken, and the new ultra-thin in-line coating thickness measurement module can measure down to a thickness equivalent to 1/1000th of a human hair (a human hair is 80 microns).

Komaragiri said: “15-20 per cent savings can be made by measuring varnish over ink instead of bare cans with no ink.”

Among many others put in for con-sideration was Applied Vision, with its DecoMaster colour inspection system nominated for an award. The DecoMaster is designed to be mounted at the decorator, detecting colour defects at the earliest opportunity.

Amir Novini, president and CEO, said: “We are able now, by 100 per cent inspection of the blanket surface, to detect which blanket is faulty and we reduce the hold-for-inspection quantity this way by up to 70 per cent. Early detection minimises decoration spoilage and therefore it is rewarding to invest into this.” CT CT

peas and beans are also performing well. These are ingredients that require no preparation, and are ready to eat or incorporate into other dishes straight from the can, in my view reflecting the economic and social priorities of UK consumers, who are seeking cost-effective and time-saving meal solutions.

This concern to spend sensibly, combined with a surge in popularity of cookery programmes with an onus on quick, nutritious and economic meals, lends itself naturally to canned foods that encom-pass all of these values. We’ve witnessed many celebrity chefs, ranging from the Hairy Bikers, Mary Berry and Nigel Slater, eager to promote and recognise this fact too. James Martin has been an ambassador for Canned Food UK for over seven years, helping us to communicate the message that canned food can be used in recipes worthy of a chef ’s seal of approval. Nutritionists have also long recognised the health benefits that incorporating

Over the last year, £2.4bn has been spent on canned goods in the UK, which is an increase of £3.2m compared with the previous year. In fact, consecutively

year-on-year the popularity of the can has contin-ued to increase, to the point that 99 per cent of the population are now buying canned foods, which signifies a higher household penetration than any other UK food market, including cheese, milk, bread, alcohol and fresh meat.

The steady increase of the canned food market indicates that there is a desire for foods that can be bought under a realistic budget and, impor-tantly, cooked in a realistic timeframe to meet the pressures of busy lifestyles. The long shelf life of canned foods, thanks to the canning process, means purchases can be made in the confidence that food will not go to waste. With food waste costing UK

households a collective £12bn a year, according to the UK Department for Environment,

Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), a more considered decision-making pro-

cess isn’t surprising as consum-ers seek more convenience and cost-efficient grocery purchases. Shoppers are adopting a cau-tious approach to spending, and while the cost of produce such as fresh poultry and beef con-tinues to increase, canned food

remains a consistently priced store cupboard essential. Annual figures show that the

largest canned food market is fish, accounting for 22.3 per cent of the

total spend, and canned fruit and prepared

canned foods as part of a healthy diet can help to achieve, with fruit and vegetables canned in their own juices or water recognised by the NHS as contributing to the Government’s daily recom-mended 5-A-DAY intake.

The functionality of the can itself is also of appeal to consumers, with today’s sophisticated production lines producing a range of innova-tive packaging shapes, sizes and weights, all with the increased satisfaction and usability of the consumer in mind. Ease of opening, with the introduction of easy-open-ends and peelable foil in cans, is an area which will continue to be of importance to both brand owners and own-label producers, as consumers increasingly value the options available to them across all packaging formats. Advances in canning production also means that, today, cans weigh over 30 per cent less than those produced 20 years ago. We can expect to continue to see innovation in the types of canned goods being made available; giving rise to a whole new array of interesting and diverse culinary dishes that otherwise wouldn’t have been achievable for the average consumer.

EDUCATIONAlthough these factors are supporting the pop-ularity of canned food consumption in the UK, there is still some way to go to educate the broad-er population on the benefits of eating canned food, which is a key objective for not-for-profit organisation Canned Food UK. Our core aim is to help change perceptions of canned food, to make it a preference to the average consumer alongside fresh and frozen alternatives, by high-lighting its nutritional value and showcasing the exciting, affordable meals that can be made from simple store cupboard ingredients.

We have recently completed our second annual Canned Food Week, which raises awareness of canned food and its nutritional benefits through a week-long campaign designed to help the every-

day consumer to plan meals with the addition of healthy and cost effec-tive canned food. In addition to this, Canned Food UK is also dedicated to an ongoing infor-mation outreach programme to opinion formers within the food and media industry, including food writers, blog-gers and broadcasters.

What is most interesting to us is that we have seen a shift in what consumers want to actively engage with. Our new YouTube Cooking Channel – which features recipe demonstrations and the opportu-nity to feature videos of your own – is receiv-ing in excess of four days’ worth of playback time each month. Our iPhone app also continues to be popular, and remaining innovative in how we communicate to different demographics is essential to help us relate with them. In recent years we’ve seen a significant increase in requests for our free literature from dieticians, NHS prac-titioners and health organisations. As a result, Canned Food UK has created a range of material that clearly shows the sources of nutrients from different canned foods. Just one example is our new Everyday Nutrition poster, developed with nutritionist Amanda Hamilton, another ambas-sador of Canned Food UK, to provide simplified and easily accessible nutritional information.

The key to retaining growth in the market is to ensure that the benefits of canned food – the convenience, the variety, the nutritional contribu-tion and the overall value – continue to be com-municated to consumers. There is still some way for us to go to ensure that perceptions of canned food are widely improved, but with the help of key opinion formers and continual innovation our campaigns are steadily but surely resonating with the media and public more than ever. METAL DECORATING: CARL THOMSEN

cantechonline.com 35JUNE 2014

Effective separations can help keep the label on-colour during the run. The less the inks touch one another, the lower the potential for cross-con-tamination of one ink into another on the decora-tor. That said, cross-contamination is inevitable on any and all wet-on-wet labels; with wet inks printing to the blankets and butting up or over-printing one another, you simply cannot avoid or eliminate it. Plates made with the appropriate screen values, angles and adequate stay-aways are the first steps on any label to minimise cross-contamination.

Once the design and separations are finalised and approved, the pilot decorator must produce a can that is able to be matched by a typical production decorator running at speed. Ink densities and over-print varnish should be applied at attainable levels. Typical production dot gain may need to be “built in” on the pilot plates, or achieved by increasing pilot deco pressures.

Good decision-making and best practices are important in the can plant, too. Communication is needed between scheduling, production and quality personnel to prepare for the label change and improve your ability to run efficiently and effectively.

Talk with your ink technician to make sure you are using the right inks for the job, and to confirm which ink should be assigned to which inker and plate. Ink in the bucket should look clean and on-colour. If some of it looks dirty and contami-nated, it was probably put back in the bucket after a previous run. Don’t use it! Use clean ink, or risk off-colour cans. If you can’t decide if the ink will print on-colour or not, ask your in-plant ink technician.

Today’s complicated, six-colour wet-on-wet labels offer no “vaca-tion” for graphics depart-ments, ink suppliers or can makers.

There have been many painful and costly lessons learned, and there are undoubtedly more to come.

But like those car trips of our youth, somehow we’ll make it through and achieve better quality and customer satisfaction… together. CT

If you are of a certain age, you probably remember going on vacations in the family car. If you had a family of four in a Country Squire station wagon, maybe it was not too

big a deal. With a little planning by mum and a well-timed threat from dad, the trip probably went reasonably well.

But what if you were a family of six in a Rambler sedan? The closer together the kids were, and the longer they were in the car, the worse things got.

Now, think about printing on a two-piece can as being kind of like those car trips. Labels used to be three or four solid colours with generous stay-aways. Like the family of four in the station wagon, there was plenty of personal space. Label changes to a three or four spot colour design often required little more than a quick wipe of the inkers; a curso-ry check of pressures and registration; maybe a little gentle persuasion from a production supervisor to hurry up, and the can was up and running.

But with today’s complicated labels consisting of six colours; tight separations; fine screens; and wet-on-wet graphics, you are figuratively jamming a family of six into a Rambler. No matter how hard you try, there is bound to be trouble. You will always have at least some issues above and beyond those of a spot-colour label, and as the number of colours and the amount of wet-trapping increases, you have more problems to watch out for. But good decision-making from design to production, and establishing effective operating procedures in the can plant, will help you attain a finished can that meets commercial colour and quality, and custom-ers’ expectations.

The best looking labels don’t exceed the capabil-ity of the two-piece decorating process itself. Many colours and concepts that are possible on paper or the computer screen are simply not attainable on a decorator, and sometimes designers need to be reined in by more pragmatic minds.

This may take a little extra time and effort by sales people, graphics personnel and the ink supplier, but it’s best not to create unreasonable expectations that could lead to frustration and disappointment at the pilot and/or production facility.

The right ink colours with the appropriate opac-ities need to be chosen. Give the ink company as much information about the graphics as possible; provide a colour pdf file if available. Thorough knowledge of the design helps the ink company formulate properly for best-finished production can quality.

The new LDDS-100 lacquer defect detection system was launched at Metpack by Quality By Vision. A nominee for the Innovation Awards, the LDDS-100 is an automatic, in-line system that scans the full length of every sheet that comes off of the lacquer coater.

It is capable of detecting droplets or con-tamination in the lacquer margins, skewed sheets, off-register coating and other visual defects. According to the manufacturer, the major benefit of the system is that it ensures no contaminated sheets make it as far as the welder, therefore reducing unnecessary wastage.

This reportedly could save can makers money in lost production time and more for

The CP100 cylindrical printer, powered by JetINX, represents the Evolve Advanced Digital Solutions brand line INX developed to help traditional printers and converters tran-sition to digital printing with industrial inkjet systems.

“Since the last Metpack in 2011, we have further strengthened our commitment to the metal decorating industry in a number of ways,” said Rick Clendenning, president and CEO. “Our R&D division continues to be ahead of the curve in developing highly effective products that meet the demands of customers and benefit printers who serve the industry.

AP Retort II two-piece inks offer improved misting, runability and better handling capabil-ity from the previous retort system. AP LoVoc inks are formulated for two-piece aluminum and coated steel. They are approved for envi-ronmental issues with low VOC and low HAPs.

The TP Plus and TP UV Plus Process Colors are three-piece inks designed to be used on multiple applications. This includes crowns, screw caps, closures, two-piece DRD cans, welded aerosols and decorative tins.

The new RM07 compound gun from GEM features the ability to run solely with electrical current, without the need of compressed air.

The absence of gaskets simoplifies mainte-nance operations in terms of time and spare

GEM electromagnetic RM07 gunparts, leaving the replacement of the nozzle/needle components as the only ordinary main-tenance activities.

Its reduced size and blocking mechanism facilitate its positioning on the production line.

The mastic used is only in contact with the nozzle and needle, eliminating the need to dismantle the whole gun when it comes to cleaning and maintenance.

The electric coil allows the needle to be commanded using a fixed magnet, facilitating rapid and precise opening and closing times. This makes it ideal for use in conjunction with the latest high speed production lines.

Alaskan Brewing brings more cans to the last frontierAs part of larger expansion plans, Alaskan Brewing has installed a

new canning line and so far released cans of its flagship Alaskan Amber and Freeride APA into the Alaskan market. The brewery has plans for further distribution in the future. Based on 2013 sales figures, Alaskan Brewing Company is the 17th largest craft brewer in the United States.

Notch Brewing expands cannedsession ale offeringsMassachusetts’ Notch Brewing recently released Left of the Dial IPA, its second canned offering. The brewery, which focus-es solely on lower alcohol, or session beer, joins a growing number of American craft breweries releasing this style of beer in cans.

“The Kimmie, The Yink, andThe Holy Gose” – say what?Anderson Valley Brewing Company has debuted the latest canned offering in its Highway 128 session series lineup and it’s got a name you won’t soon forget. The Kimmie, The Yink, and The Holy Gose is one of only a few canned versions of the historic German-style of beer known as Gose (pronounced gose-uh). This low alco-hol beer is traditionally brewed with cori-ander and salt. If you’re curious about the name, it comes from the brewery’s location in Boonville, California, which is also home to a curious lingo known as Boontling. The name translates loosely as “The Father, The Son, and The Holy Gose”.

Beer Camp mixed-pack to feature bottles and cansSierra Nevada Brewing Company has been

creating a lot of buzz around its Beer Camp Across America series of beer festivals being held this summer, and to go along with that it has announced the release of a mixed 12-pack of collabora-tion beers that will fea-ture an industry first mix of bottles and cans. Ten of the beers will be bottled and the two others will be canned collaborations between Sierra Nevada and Cigar City Brewing and Oskar Blues Brewery.

Big Chuck is strongest canned craft beer to dateAt 11.7%, Portside Brewery’s Big Chuck Barleywine has squeaked by 21st Amendment’s Lower de Boom to become the strongest canned craft beer to date. Big Chuck is named for “Big Chuck Schodowski”, a longtime TV personality in Portside’s hometown of Cleveland. Cans of Big Chuck were filled by mobile canning outfit Buckeye Canning. It’s a good thing it isn’t much stronger than an already numb-ing 11.7%, considering Ohio state law mandates that beer not exceed 12%. CT

Russ Phillips is the founder of www.CraftCans.com. In this month’s craft cans update, Russ brings us the very latest news from brewers

across the US, including a brew that comes in at a staggering11.7% ABV. Hold on to your bar stools if you decide to give it a try!

CraftCans.Com’s Can of the MonthTruthRhinegeist Brewing CompanyCincinnati, Ohio

Truth, an India Pale Ale, is one of two cans recently released from this newer Cincinnati brewery. Each batch of Truth is hopped at a rate of 3lbs of hops per bar-rel, which give this beer a ton of bright, tropical and citrus notes. This is a bold IPA with plenty of malt backbone to balance out the flavours. More proof that a great IPA can be found on both American coasts and everywhere in between!

INDUSTRY INTERVIEW

JUNE 2014

seen at the recent Metpack Show. Our manage-ment strongly supports continued advancements in technology, which places us in a good position with regard to can and end making equipment.

Fly fishing and hunting with my sons and grand-sons is top notch! But just being with my family at our home in Montana is the pinnacle of relaxation and fun. CT

This is my fourth decade in the can business that has included experiences in filling cans, making cans and finally, for the last 20 years, the equip-ment that makes the cans. One of my first jobs was to keep the solder pots filled during the era of three-piece solder cans. Working with companies has afforded me the opportunity to hold various positions that allowed me varying perspectives of the can and end business from different angles.

I think the biggest challenge we face today is to realise that the focus of needs and wants of cus-tomers has changed dramatically. In the past, our customers wanted faster equipment and the use of less metal. Today, our challenge is to reduce energy, use less fluids and provide programmes that will reduce the cost of operations.

As with most industries, can and end making tech-nology has advanced at a remarkable pace. Today we use less metal in both cans and ends, the forming of cans and ends is different and decorating is now done with advanced inks. Digital printing at high speeds is also just around the corner.

I believe our industry will see equipment leaving smaller footprints without sacrificing quality or speed, using less energy and less fluids. As an indus-try, working to reduce or eliminate effluence should be a goal.

Stolle is in a great position to take on these chal-lenges. Over the last two years our R&D teams have achieved advancements in technology as was
