Basic Operations


Safety Information1. Laser SafetyThis Printer is certified as a Class 1 laser product under EN60825-1:1994. This means that the printer does not producehazardous laser radiation.Since radiation emitted inside the printer is completely confined within protective housings and external covers, the laserbeam cannot escape from the machine during any phase of user operation.

2. Additional InformationWhen servicing or adjusting the optical system of the printer, be careful not to place screwdrivers or other shiny objectsin the path of the laser beam. Also, accessories such as watches and rings should be removed before working on theprinter. The reflected beam, though invisible, can permanently damage your eyes.Since the beam is invisible, the following labels are attached to the inside of covers where there is danger of exposureto laser radiation:The label shown below is attached to the laser scanner unit inside the printer.

Ozone EmissionsOzone is a colourless gas (O3) produced during electrostatic recording. Ozone generated by the printer is removed byan ozone filter in the exhaust port in the printers right side panel.

Note:Replacement of the ozone filter requires the services of a qualified technician.

CAUTIONPersons particularly sensitive to ozone odors may feel ill after breathing in large quantities of ozone. To avoid suchconditions, observe the following precautions.I Provide adequate ventilation. (If possible, circulate air once every hour, or use the printer in a large room.)I Avoid using multiple laser printers in the same place at the same time.I Do not aim the ventilation slot on the right side of the printer toward areas where people are present.I The ozone filter should be replaced after 75,000 pages of Letter/A4 colour printing or after 300,000 pages of

Letter/A4 monochrome printing.I Never use the printer with the ozone filter removed.

It also describes various precautions to be observed in order to ensure safe operation. Please read thismanual thoroughly before operating the CP660, in order to familiarise yourself with its capabilities, and to make the mostof its many functions. After reading this manual, store it in a safe place for future reference.

Safety ConsiderationsInstallation

WARNINGI Do not install the copier near storage of alcohol, paint thinner

or other inflammable substances. If inflammable substancescome into contact with electrical parts inside the copier, thismay result in a fire or electrical shock.

I Do not place the following items on the copier. If these itemscome into contact with a high-voltage area inside the copier,this may result in a fire or electrical shock. Necklaces and other metal objects Cups, vases, flowerpots and other containers filled with

water or liquidsIf these items are dropped or spilled inside the copier,immediately turn OFF the power switch and unplug the powerplug from the socket. Then, contact your servicerepresentative.

CAUTIONI Do not install the copier in unstable locations such as on

unsteady platforms or in tilted places, or in locations that aresubject to excessive vibrations, as this may cause the copierto fall or tip over, resulting in personal injury.

I Do not install the copier so that the ventilation slots areblocked by walls or objects. Allow at least 10 cm between thecopier and the wall. If the ventilation slots are blocked, heatwill build up inside the copier and may result in a fire.

I Do not place heavy objects on the copier, as they may tipover or fall resulting in personal injury.

I Do not install the copier in the following locations. A damp or dusty location A location that is exposed to direct sunlight A location with high temperatures A location that is subject to open flames

I Do not remove the copier fixing stoppers after the copier hasbeen installed, as this may cause the copier to fall or tip over,resulting in personal injury.

L Installation PrecautionsObserve the following precautions whenselecting a site to install the copier:I Avoid rapid changes in

temperature and humidity.If the room in which the copier islocated is rapidly heated from a lowtemperature, condensation may forminside the copier. This can adverselyaffect copy quality or prevent thecopying of images.

I Do not install the copier nearcomputers or other precisionelectronic equipment.Electrical interference and vibrationsgenerated by the copier duringcopying can adversely affect theoperations of such equipment.

I Do not install the copier neartelevisions, radios or other similarelectronic equipment.The copier might interfere with soundand picture signal receptions, etc.Plug the copier into a dedicatedpower outlet and maintain as muchspace as possible between the copierand other electronic equipment.

Provide adequate installation spaceI Allow at least 10 cm between the rear

side of the copier and wall. Provideenough space on each side of thecopier for unrestricted operations.(See figure to the right)

Moving the copierI If you intend to move the copier,

contact your service representativebeforehand.

Power Supply

WARNINGI Do not damage or modify the power cord. Also, do not place

heavy objects on the power cord, or pull on or excessivelybend it, as this could cause electrical damage and result in afire or electrical shock.

I Do not insert or unplug the power plug with wet hands, as thismay result in an electrical shock.

I Do not plug the copier into a multi-plug power strip, as thismay cause a fire or electrical shock.

I Do not bundle up or tie the power cord in a knot, as this mayresult in a fire or electrical shock.

I Insert the power cord completely into the socket, as failure todo so may result in a fire or electrical shock.

I Do not use power cords other than the provided power cord,as this may result in a fire or electrical shock.

I As a general rule, do not use extension cords. Also, do notuse them for multi-plug power strip configurations. Using anextension cord in such manner may result in a fire orelectrical shock. If an extension cord must be used, however,use the type rated for voltages of AC 230 V and over anduntie the cord binding and insert the power plug completelyinto the extension cord socket to ensure a firm connectionbetween the power and extension cords.

CAUTIONI Do not use power supplies with voltages other than AC 220-

240 V, as this may result in a fire or electrical shock.I Always grasp the plug portion when unplugging the power

plug. Pulling on the power cord may expose or snap the corewire, or otherwise damage the power cord. If the cord isdamaged, this could cause an electricity leak and result in afire or electrical shock.

I Leave sufficient space around the power plug so that it canbe unplugged easily. If objects are placed around the powerplug, you will be unable to unplug it in an emergency. Also,the socket-outlet shall be installed near the equipment andshall be easlly accessible.

I Unplug the power plug from the outlet at least once a year,and clean the area around the base of the plugs metal pinsto ensure all dust is removed. If dust accumulates in thisarea, it may result in a fire.

L Select a safe power supplyI Do not plug other electrical equipment into the outlet to which the

copier is connected.I Always connect the power cord of the printer unit to the reader

unit. Do not use power cords other than the provided power cord,as this can adversely affect the operations of the copier.

Handling

WARNINGI Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the copier. There

are high-temperature and high-voltage components inside thecopier that may result in a fire or electrical shock.

I When moving the copier, always first turn OFF the powerswitch on the control panel of the reader unit, then turn thepower switch on the right side of the reader unit to the OFFposition after 30 minutes, and finally unplug the power plug.Failure to do so may damage the power plug and result in afire or electrical shock.

ON/OFF

I If the copier makes strange noises, or emits smoke, heat orunusual smells, immediately turn the power switch on theright side of the reader unit to the OFF position and unplugthe power plug from the socket. Then, contact your servicerepresentative. Continued use of the copier in this conditionmay result in a fire or electrical shock.

I Do not use highly flammable sprays near the copier. If gasfrom these sprays comes into contact with the electricalcomponents inside the copier, this may result in a fire orelectrical shock.

I Do not drop paper clips, staples or other metal objects insidethe copier. Also, do not spill water, liquids or inflammablesubstances (alcohol, benzene, paint thinner, etc.) inside thecopier. If these items come into contact with a high voltagearea inside the copier, this may result in a fire or electricalshock. If these items are dropped or spilled inside the copier,immediately turn the power switch on the right side of thereader unit to the OFF position and unplug the power plugfrom the socket. Then, contact your service representative.

CAUTIONI Close the platen glass cover, the feeder and the editor gently

to avoid catching your hand inside these parts, as this mayresult in personal injury.

I Do not press down hard on the feeder when using the platenglass to make copies of thick books, etc. Failure to do so maydamage the platen glass and result in personal injury.

I Turn OFF the power switch on the control panel of the readerunit for safety when the copier will not be used for a longperiod of time such as at night. Also, first turn OFF the powerswitch on the control panel of the reader unit, then turn thepower switch on the right side of the reader unit to the OFFposition after 30 minutes, and finally unplug the power plugfor safety when the copier will not be used for an even longerperiod of time such as during consecutive holidays.

ON/OFF

Maintenance and Inspections

WARNINGI When cleaning the copier, first turn OFF the power switch on

CAUTIONI There are some areas inside the copier that are subject to

high voltages and high temperatures. Take adequateprecautions when performing internal inspections such asclearing paper jams, to avoid burns or an electrical shock.

I When removing jammed paper or inspecting the inside of thecopier, do not allow necklaces, bracelets or other metalobjects to touch the inside of the copier, as this may result inburns or an electrical shock.

I When removing copy paper that has become jammed frominside the copier, take care not to allow the toner on thejammed copy paper to come into contact with your hands orclothing, as this will dirty your hands or clothing. If theybecome dirty, wash them immediately with cold water.Washing with warm water will set the toner and make itimpossible to remove the toner stains.

I When removing copy paper that has become jammed frominside the copier, remove the jammed copy paper gently toprevent the toner on the paper from scattering and enteringyour eyes or mouth. If the toner enters your eyes or mouth,wash immediately with cold water and consult a physician.

I When loading copy paper or removing jammed originals orcopy paper, take care not to cut your hands on the edge ofthe original or copy paper.

Auto Power-off Function

If the copier is not operated for a period of about two hours after copies have been made or keys have beenpressed, the power switch on the control panel of the reader unit is automatically turned OFF. To turn the powerback ON, press the power switch on the control panel of the reader unit.

MEMO: I You can set the auto power-off time to 2 or 5 minuts, or from 1 to 24 hours, selectable in one-hourincrements. You can also cancel this function. (Auto Power-off Time: See p. 6-35)

Auto Clear Function

If the copier is not operated for a period of about two minutes after copies have been made or keys have beenpressed, it automatically returns to the Standard mode.

MEMO: I You can set the auto clear time from 1 to 9 minutes, selectable in one-minute increments. You can alsocancel this function. (Auto Clear Time: See p. 6-32)

Auto Drawer Switching

If a paper drawer runs out of copy paper during copying, the copier automatically locates another paper drawerloaded with the same copy paper size and begins feeding copy paper from that alternative paper drawer.

Preserving Colour CopiesColour copies should be stored in basically the same way as black-and-white copies. However, thefollowing points are called to your attention for preserving colour copies in the most appropriate way.

Fading due to exposure to light

As with printed materials and photographs, this is not a problem if the copies are stored under normal conditions.Even if copies are exposed for two years to the fluorescent lighting used in a regular office environment, colourshardly fade.Colour copies should be stored in binders if they are to be kept for a long period of time.

* In addition to possible fading due to exposure to light, the colour may appear to change but this is actually due to achange in colour of the copy paper.

Use of clear covers

When copies come in contact with PVC-type transparent covers, the toner on the copy will soften, and the copyand cover will adhere to each other.

Use of adhesives

Only non-solvent glues should be used for mounting copies: solvents will dissolve the toner. Test some glue with acolour copy that can be used for a sample before use with the copy on which you want to use glue.

Inserting copies between printed pages

When copies are included in books, the solvents contained in printing ink may cause the toner to soften. Theprinted pages should, therefore, be thoroughly dried to evaporate the solvents before the copies are inserted.

Folding of copies

Colour copies differ from black-and-white copies due to use of toners in four colours. Each toner deposited on thesurface of the copy paper in layer is considerably thicker than with black-and-white copies, and may peel if thecopy is folded or wrinkled. Copies should be stored using flat transparent covers, in binders, or carefully rolled.

Effect of high temperatures

If copies are left in areas of high temperatures (near heaters, etc.), the toner will melt and colours will be mixed.

Turning the Power OFF

Press the power switch on the control panel ofthe reader unit OFF.

When the power switch is turned OFF, the pilot lamp is turnedOFF.

ON/OFF

NOTICE: I Turn the power switch on the control panel of the reader unit OFF when not using the copier for aprolonged period of time, for example at night.

I Make sure that the touch panel display appears before turning the power switch on the controlpanel of the reader unit OFF again after pressing it ON.

I If you turn the power switch on the right side of the reader unit to the OFF position with a paperdrawer pulled out, you may not be able to return the paper drawer to its original position unless youwait at least 15 seconds after turning the power switch back to the ON position. If this happens, turnthe power switch back to the ON position and push the paper drawer in.

Energy Saver FunctionsThis copier supports two energy saver modes: Energy Saver mode and Low Power mode.

Energy Saver Mode

The Energy Saver mode enables you to adjust power consumption by lowering the temperature of the fuser uniton stand-by, selectable to the [-10%], [-25%], [-50%] settings.The setting can be selected in the Energy Saver Adjustment function (See p. 6-9).If the copier is not operated for a certain period of time after copies have been made or keys have been pressed, itautomatically moves to the Energy Saver mode.You can change the timer settings in the Auto Energy Saver Time function (See p. 6-33). The copier also moves to the Energy Saver mode when the key on the control panel of the reader unit is pressed.The key lights while the copier is in the Energy Saver mode.Press the key, or the COPY or SYSTEM key to return the copier from the Energy Saver mode.

MEMO: I When the [-10%], or [-25%], or [-50%] setting is selected in the Energy Saver mode, it may take acertain period of time until the copier returns from the Energy Saver mode and is ready to beginmaking copies again. The waiting time for each setting is as follows: [-10%] setting: Approx. 2 min. [-25%] setting: Approx. 2 min. [-50%] setting: Approx. 3 min. 20 sec.

I If you also press the power switch on the control panel of the reader unit, the copier will return fromthe Energy Saver mode.

Low Power Mode

When the copier moves to the Low Power mode, the fuser unit is turned OFF after a certain period of time. Thismode enables power consumption to be minimised by turning the fuser unit OFF.If the copier is not operated for a certain period of time after copies have been made or keys have been pressed, itautomatically moves to the Low Power Mode.You can change the timer settings in the Low-power Mode Time function (See p. 6-34).Press the COPY or SYSTEM key to return the copier from the Low Power mode.The power consumption in the Low Power mode is approximately 79 W.

MEMO: I It will take up to 6 minutes and 30 seconds until the copier returns to be ready for making copies.I If you also press the power switch on the control panel of the reader unit, the copier will return from

Touch Panel Display OperationsThis copier enables you to program the copy settings or set various types of modes in the touchpanel display. Messages to indicate an operational error due to copy paper jams or operationalerrors also appear in this display.

Message displayDisplays guide messages for operational instructions and the

status of the copier.

Copy ratio displayDisplays the current copy ratio setting.

Reduce, 1:1, EnlargePress to enlarge or reduce by a preset copy ratio, or to

reset the copy ratio to 100%.

ZoomPress to specify the copy ratios, selectable in 1%

increments, or to freely enlarge or reduce images in eitherthe vertical direction or the horizontal direction by a copy

ratio of your choice. Enables automatic/manual settings foryour specific needs.

SorterPress to sort copies made into sets arranged in page order. This mode can be

selected only when the sorter (optional accessory) is attached.
