Do not scan the same document more than 30 times. When a documentis scanned repeatedly, the paper can become wrinkled, earmarked, ortorn, which may result in paper jams.

Load Paper
Beore loading paper, check the paper is the right type. I you load inappropriate paper
repeatedly, this may cause paper jams.
1tep Check if the type of paper is appropriate.
Paper such as Legal, Letter, Statement, Executive, and envelopes can be used. For details
about the available paper or precautions, see [Basic Operation] [Loading paper] in
the e-Manual.
To prevent paper jams, do not use any o the ollowing:
Wrinkled or creased paper
Curled or rolled paper
Torn paper
Damp paper
Paper printed with a thermal transer printer(Do not copy on the reverse side.)
2tep Select where to load paper, and then load the paper.Use the multi-purpose tray when
loading a sheet o
small-sized paper or
heavy paper (p.21).

same size, thickness,

Check if the type of paper is appropriate.

Loading Paper in the Paper Cassette
This section describes how to load letter paper in the Paper Cassette. When loadingenvelopes or paper with a letterhead, see Loading Envelopes or Paper with a Letterhead(p.22).
1Open the ront cover and the lower ront cover.
2 Spread the paper guides a little wider than the paper size.
3 Gently load the paper into the paper cassette with the print side ace up,until the edge o the paper stack meets the back o the paper cassette.
Make sure that the paper stack does not exceed the load limit guides (A).

Switch to the Quiet Mode
You can switch to and cancel the Quiet mode, by pressing [ ] (Quiet Mode).
By deault, the Quiet mode is set to . To change this setting to ,and speciy the time to switch to the Quiet mode automatically, press[ ] (Menu) ,and then speciy a time.
The Quiet mode only reduces noise that occurs while the machine isperorming jobs.
Switch to the Sleep Mode
You can switch to and cancel the Sleep mode, by pressing [ ] (Energy Saver).
When the Processing/Data indicator is lit or blinking, the machine will not enter theSleep mode, because an operation is in progress or an error has occurred.
By deault, the machine automatically enters the Sleep mode i you do notperorm any unctions or 5 minutes. To change this setting, press [ ](Menu) , and then speciy atime.

You can set whether or not to conserve toner when copying. When using the Toner Savermode, the output may not be clear, as subtle details, such as thin lines and light colors, maynot be clearly reproduced.

3 Click the [Page Setup] tab, and then speciy the number o pages and apage layout.
Select the number o pagesto print on a single page.
Select the page layout.

Add Watermarks to a Printout
You can add watermarks, such as DRAFT, to a document.
1 Open a document rom an application, and then open the Print window.
2 Select your printer, and then open the Printing Preerences window.
3 Click the [Page Setup] tab, and then speciy the settings or watermarkprinting.
Select the desiredwatermark.
Select to addwatermarks.
4 To create a new watermark, click [Edit Watermark], and then enter thenew text.
Add the edited watermark.
Delete the selectedwatermark rom the list.

This section describes the layout and eatures o each setting dialog box o the MF Toolbox.

I you use the scanner driver window (ScanGear MF Window), you can use various eaturesand scan only the necessary part with the preview unction.
1Place your documents (p.16).
2 Switch to the Scan mode (p.13).
3 Press [] or [] to highlight , and then press [OK].
4 From your computer, double-click the [Canon MF Toolbox 4.9] icon.
5 When the MF Toolbox appears, click the desired scan mode button. You may not use the ScanGear MF when using the [OCR] mode.
6 When the scan setting window appears, select the [Display the ScannerDriver] check box, and then click [Start].
7 Select [Preview] on the scanner driver dialog box, and then speciysettings as needed.

Clean the Machine
Clean the exterior and interior o the machine, eeder, and the fxing unit periodically.
Cleaning the Exterior and Interior
Clean the exterior and interior o the machine to prevent toner powder and paper dustrom accumulating inside.
IMPORTANTIMPORTANT
For saety, be sure to turn OFF the machine and disconnect all cables romthe machine beore cleaning the machine. When you fnish cleaning themachine, wait or it to dry completely beore reconnecting the power cord,and then turn ON the power.
Cleaning the Exterior
1 Turn OFF the machine and disconnect all the cables rom the machine.
2 Remove any documents rom the platen glass or eeder.
3 Clean the exterior o the machine and ventilation slots with a sot, wellwrung-out cloth dampened with water or a mild detergent that has been
diluted with water.
4 Wait or the printer to dry completely.
5 Reconnect all the cables, and then turn ON the power.
Cleaning the Interior
1 Turn OFF the machine and disconnect all the cables rom the machine.
2 Remove any documents rom the platen glass or eeder.
3 Lit the scanning platorm, open the toner cover, and then remove thetoner cartridge.

Be careul not to get your fngers caught.
Do not touch the xing unit (A).
Touching the fxing unit (A) may causeburns as it becomes very hot during use.

Washing with warm water makes it
impossible to remove the toner stains.
Cleaning the Fixing Unit
Clean the fxing unit when black streaks appear on printed pages.

I a scanned image has unexpected specks, clean the platen glass and eeder.
Cleaning the Platen Glass
1 Turn OFF the machine and disconnect all the cables rom the machine.
2 Remove any documents rom the platen glass.
3 Open the eeder or the platen glass cover.
4 Clean the platen glass with a sot, dry cloth.
5 Close the eeder or the platen glass cover.
6 Reconnect all the cables, and then turn ON the power.
Cleaning the Feeder
1 Turn OFF the machine and disconnect all the cables rom the machine.
2 Remove any documents rom the eeder.
3 Open the eeder cover, clean the rollers with a well wrung-out clothdampened with water, and then wipe them with a sot and dry cloth.

Check and Replace Toner Cartridges
Toner cartridges are consumable products. When the toner has almost run out, streaks mayappear on printed pages. Replace the toner cartridge i necessary.
I the print result is not improved, replace the tonercartridge (p.56).
Gently shake the toner cartridge 5-6 times toevenly distribute the toner (p.55).
Conserving the Toner to Extend the Lie oToner Cartridges
I you redistribute the toner, you may be able to print or some time until the toner runs out.
1 Lit the scanning platorm, open the toner cover, and then remove thetoner cartridge.
2 Gently shake the toner cartridge 5-6 times to evenly distribute the toner.
CAUTION
I toner gets on yourhands or clothing, washthem immediately withcold water. Do not washwith warm water, as itsets the toner and makes
it impossible to removethe toner stains.

Replacing the Toner Cartridge
You can purchase replacement toner cartridges rom your local authorized Canon dealer.
Supported genuine Canon toner cartridge:
Canon Cartridge 128 Starter
1 Open the operation panel and the toner cover, and then remove thetoner cartridge.
2Prepare a new toner cartridge.
Store the protective bag. It is required when you remove the toner cartridge orprinter maintenance or other purposes.
Shake the toner cartridge 5-6times to evenly distribute thetoner.
Place the toner cartridge on aat surace, remove the tab, and
careully pull the sealing tapecompletely out (20 (50 cm)).

When pulling out the sealing tape:
Do not pull the sealing tape at an angle or up and down. I the tapebreaks, it may not be pulled out completely.
Even i the sealing tape stops at midpoint, pull it out o the tonercartridge completely.
I any tape remains in the toner cartridge, this may result in poorprint quality.
Dispose o the packing materials according to local regulations.
3 Insert the toner cartridge.
4 Close the toner cover, and then lower the scanning platorm.
WARNING
Do not dispose o a used toner cartridge in open ames.
This may cause the toner remaining inside the cartridge to ignite, resulting in burnsor a fre.
When cleaning up spilled or scattered toner:
I you accidentally spill or scatter toner, careully gather the toner particles togetheror wipe them up with a sot, damp cloth in a way that prevents inhalation.Never use a vacuum cleaner to clean up spilled toner. Doing so may cause amalunction in the vacuum cleaner, or result in a dust explosion due to staticdischarge.
CAUTION
I you get toner on your hands or clothing:
Wash them immediately with cold water. Washing with warm water sets the toner,making it impossible to remove the toner stains.
Do not allow the toner to scatter.

Clear Jams
When appears on the display, a paper jam has occurred in the eeder orinside the machine. To remove the jammed document or paper, ollow the instructions onthe display.

When removing jammed paper or inspecting the inside o the machine:
Do not allow necklaces, bracelets, or other metal objects to touch the inside o the

Wash with cold water. Do not wash with warm water, as this will set the toner andcause it to stain your skin or clothing.
When removing jammed documents or paper:
I paper is jammed, remove it careully so that no pieces o paper remain inside themachine according to the displayed message. Also, do not put your hand in anarea other than indicated areas, as this may result in personal injuries or burns.

Maintenance and Inspections

Unplug the power plug rom the power outlet periodically and
clean the area around the base o the power plugs metal pinsand the power outlet with a dry cloth to remove dust and grime.
When damp, accumulated dust may cause short circuiting or
fres.
Use a damp, well wrung-out cloth to clean the machine.
Dampen cleaning cloths with water only. Do not use alcohol,
benzenes, paint thinners, or other ammable substances. I
these substances come into contact with electrical parts inside
the machine, this may result in a fre or electric shock.
Check the power cord and plug regularly or damage. Check
the machine or rust, dents, scratches, cracks, or excessive heat

Consumables
WARNING
Do not dispose o used toner cartridges in open ames. This

I you accidentally spill or scatter toner, careully wipe up the
loose toner with a damp, sot cloth and avoid inhaling any toner
dust. Never use a vacuum cleaner to clean up loose toner. Doing
so may cause a malunction in the vacuum cleaner or result in a
dust explosion due to static discharge.
CAUTION Keep the toner cartridges and other consumables out o the
reach o small children. I toner is ingested, consult a physician
or poison control center immediately.
Do not attempt to disassemble the toner cartridge. The toner
may scatter and get into your eyes or mouth. I toner gets into

I toner spills rom the toner cartridge, avoid inhaling it or
allowing it to come into contact with your skin. I the toner
