Shortest Week of the Year

Have you ever wanted to stretch or skip time? As a college student, I remember the anxiety of all the deadlines leading up to finals week. A student prone to procrastinating – like me – would love to stretch time right before finals. On the other hand, when I was waiting for something good to happen, like a birthday, time couldn’t pass fast enough. A child waiting for presents would love to fast forward time.

This week, we don’t have a choice. We get to celebrate an entire week of Advent in two days. That makes the fourth week of Advent the shortest week of the year. For many of you, these two days will pass in a blur. For others, there is the sadness of loss in the family, so this 2-day week will pass at a snail’s pace.

Despite the difficulties that are often interwoven with the joys of the season, our Lord wants to meet you in this time. When Jesus was born in a humble stable, the only people who recognized him were foreigners (the wise men) and simple shepherds. Everyone else was too busy with the travel arrangements of the census and all the other demands of life.

It’s easy to lose sight of God’s presence, so I need constant reminders. I found a book called The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence, a gem of insight from a 17th century monk that reminds me of the little way of St. Therese. According to Brother Lawrence, the simple awareness of God’s presence can have a profound impact on our faith life: “All we have to do is to recognize God as being intimately present within us. Then we may speak directly to Him every time we need to ask for help, to know His will in moments of uncertainty, and to do whatever He wants us to do in a way that pleases Him.”

Last week I shared a short prayer that opens the soul to God’s presence (Come, Lord Jesus!). Brother Lawrence gives a few other suggestions that can help someone at the beginning stages of the practice of the presence of God. These prayers are “Lord, I am all Yours,” “God of love, I love You with all my heart,” and “Lord, use me according to Your will.”

So in the middle of the busyness of this 2-day week, take a moment to call to mind that you are in God’s presence. He chose to come in a stable so He could look on you with love. You can start the practice of the presence of God by noticing your breathing and telling yourself, “I am in God’s presence. He looks at me with love.” May this week lead to a joyful celebration of the present of His presence.

Peace,Fr. Matthew

Office Closed The Pastoral Center will be CLOSED in observation of the Christmas and New Years holidays Monday, December 24-January 1 (resuming normal business hours on Jan. 2). The emergency line will be available for emergency calls.

Traveling Chalice Ministry The chalice is a symbol of priesthood. The Traveling Chalice is designed to bring about a family focus to vocation prayer. The members of the CDA # 2316 want to offer our priest our support and prayers. Each week a

family or individual will accept the responsibility of praying for vocations. The chalice can be obtained in the foyer of the adoration chapel after 12 noon on a given Saturday and returned the following Sat. before noon. In order to receive the chalice for vocations please call Helen Gravois 985-209-5137 to schedule a week ahead of time. Anyone is welcome to pray with the chalice for vocations. Our hope is that our prayers are answered and that more people will answer the call to the priesthood and religious life.
