In 2012, worldwide, there are estimated to have been 456 000 new cases (3.2% of all incidence cancer cases). It is the sixth most common cause of death from cancer, with an estimated 400 000 deaths in 2012 (4.9% of all cancer deaths). These figures include both adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma subtypes. About 80% of cases worldwide occur in less developed regions. Oesophageal cancer incidence rates worldwide in men are more than double those in women (with a male-to-female ratio of 2.4:1). In both sexes, incidence varies by a factor of more than 20 across the regions of the world, with 2012 incidence rates (per 100 000 population) ranging from 0.8 cases in western Africa to 17.0 cases in eastern Asia in men, and from 0.2 cases in Micronesia/Polynesia to 7.8 cases in eastern Africa in women. Cancer of the oesophagus has very poor survival (with an overall ratio of mortality to incidence of 0.88), and oesophageal cancer mortality closely follows the geographical patterns for incidence, with the highest 2012 mortality rates (per 100 000 population) occurring in eastern Asia (14.1 deaths) and southern Africa (12.8 deaths) in men, and in eastern Africa (7.3 deaths) and southern Africa (6.2 deaths) in women.
