CANALWAY CAVALCADE heralds the start of a summer of special celebrations for waterways lovers everywhere. This year’s Cavalcade theme is Celebrating London’s Waterways, with linked events and
festivals taking place all over the London area: Rickmansworth Canal Festival 18 - 19th May; Ware Festival 5 - 7th July; IWA National Festival at Watford 19 - 21st July; Olympic Park Event 10 - 11th August; Angel, Islington 1st September; Slough 7 - 8th September.
CANALWAY CAVALCADE is a major event in the national canal calendar. Organised by IWA volunteers annually since 1983, it now always takes place over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend (4th to 6th May) at Little Venice in Paddington, the capital’s most iconic canal venue, and one of its major tourist attractions. It combines a boaters’ gathering with a trade show and a wide range of activities, attractions and delicious food stalls - extending from Warwick Crescent and into the Paddington Stone Wharf and Rembrandt Gardens.
About 150 boats are likely to attend and will moor in or adjacent to the Pool of Little Venice and towards Paddington station. During the event, visitors see the area at its best, full of colourful boats decked with bunting, creating a marvellous spectacle. A wide diversity of boats is always represented, including historic canal working boats, holiday and residential narrowboats and cruisers, with the occasional Dutch barge.
The programme includes a wide range of activities for all the family. There will be floating events and competitions, guided walks, boat trips by various operators, food stalls and a licensed bar, a trade and craft show, music of all kinds, theatre and puppets on the barge May Brent in The Pool. Children’s activities range from kayaking to a Teddy Bears’ Picnic and Punch & Judy in Rembrandt Gardens.
There will be a themed pageant of decorated boats, a procession of illuminated boats and a parade of historic and working craft. A canal holiday and many other prizes can also be won in the Grand Prize Draw - tickets will be on sale at all the waterways events during the summer.
The trade and craft show, along Warwick Crescent and the towpaths, is always lively and well patronised and our traders wouldn’t miss the event for anything.
