Result?
• Onset of _________________________________slowed the German
advance
• Stalemate meant HUGE Russian casualties and
___________________________on the Eastern Front
• USSR officially joined the war on the side of Britain in 1941
(the Allies)
Today’s historians consider Operation Barbarossa a major reason
Hitler lost the war. Many of his own generals advised against it,
saying it would be the end of the Reich! Why do/did they think
this?
Battle of El Alamein, Egypt: 1942
Overview:
• In 1942 Britain finally opened second front in
____________________________
• Hitler needed
_________________________________________________________
• Britain and American troops landed in North Africa to
_________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________
Background:
• _______________ tried to take the Balkans and British colonies
in North Africa (both failed)
• Hitler had to send reinforcements to help Mussolini,
___________________________________
• Italy’s weakness provided a hole through which the Allies
might fight back...
Result:
•
_____________________________________________________________________________
• First defeat of Axis Powers!
•
_________________________________________________________________
• Allies then invade Italy,
__________________________________________________________
• Italy surrenders and sides with Allies in 1943
The Battle of Stalingrad, July ‘42
Meanwhile, back in the USSR...
• Stalin was sweating as Nazi forces closed in on Stalingrad
• The city had HUGE significance as it was named for, well,
Stalin
• He ordered it MUST be defended to the end! All available
troops were sent there
• 3 things worked in the Russians’ favour:
• ___________________________________________
• ___________________________________________
• Russians considered it their __________________ to
defend the city and rallied behind Stalin much like Britons did
behind Churchill during the Blitz
*Even now, WWII is known as “The Great Patriotic War” in Russia
(and former USSR)
• Conditions were awful for both sides
• Germans were ________________________________and supplies
never came
• Soviet army, while huge, was ______________________(much like
Tannenburg in WWI)
Result and Impact
• ________________________________________________________
• Marked first defeat on the Eastern Front
• Soviets could now

•
_________________________________________________________________________
• Considered a MAJOR turning point in the war considered the
bloodiest battle in history, with more combined casualties than any
other battle before or since...
Battle of the Atlantic: Refers to the war in the Atlantic Ocean
to stop supplies from getting to the Allies, or, CONVOYS VERSUS
U-BOATS
• Britain needed
_____________________________________________________________
• Nazi _______________________ hunted convoys in
__________________________ to try and stop supplies from entering
Britain. THEY WERE DEADLY!
• Allied defences against the U-Boats:

“The only thing that ever really frightened me in the whole war
was the u-Boat peril.”
Churchill, ~1950
By ‘43 German u-boats were no longer major threat due to lack of
resources, manpower, superiority of Allied naval technology and
German defeats in Europe.
Normandy Invasion (D-Day): June 6, 1944
The Plan:
• Allied invasion of Nazi occupied Europe
• Go through English Channel and storm beaches of France with
everything you’ve got!
• Combined efforts of ____________________ ____________________
__________________
Required massive amounts of soldiers and ships to land on the
heavily fortified beaches of
France
The Allies released false information through spies to fool the
Nazis
Hitler was convinced the Allies would attack elsewhere and moved
many divisions away
from Normandy. BIG MISTAKE!
THIS FINALLY SATISFIED STALIN’S DEMANDS FOR A SECOND FRONT IN
EUROPE!!
The Result:
Over 300,000 soldiers involved
Over 10,000 casualties
Many did not even make it to the beach against German machine
guns
Allies gain foothold in Europe
Starts offensive against Germans in the west while Soviets are
pushing from the East
First time since Dunkirk (’40) Allies are in Europe
Marks ‘beginning of the end’ for the Germans
MAP ACTIVITY!!!!!!!!!!!
AWESOME!!!!!!
SUCH MAP!!!!!
MUCH COLOURING!!!!
PART A: Using the map on the next page, detail one of the
battles we have covered in class or from your project. Along with
the required details (who, what, where, when, why), please add in
the lines of attack and defense, and troop movements.
PART B: Pick a side in your battle. Detail how your side could
have won or lost this specific event, and what changes would need
to occur in order for this to happen. Add these changes to your
original map using a different colour.
