FOREWORD TO EVALUATORS

1. ThisOperationsManualhasbeenpreparedtoprovideinstructionsandguidanceforconductingtheCanadianForcesFireMarshal’sFirefighterPre-EntryFitnessEvaluation(CFFM’SFPFE).ItistobeusedwhenconductingevaluationsofFirefighterApplicantsforbothCFandDNDfirefighterpositions.

2. CFFM’SFPFEhasbeenresearchedanddevelopedfortheCanadianForcesFireMarshall(CFFM),bytheDirectorGeneralPersonnelandFamilySupportServices(DGPFSS),DirectorateofHumanPerformanceandHealthPromotion(DHPHP),andtheDirectorofFitness(DFit).TheUniversityofAlbertawascontractedtodevelopandscientificallyvalidatephysicalfitnesspre-selectionstandardsforCF/DNDFirefighters.Basedupontheresearchfindings,DGPFSS/DFitdevelopedacomprehensivepre-selectionprogram,consistingofaphysicalfitnessevaluationaswellasacomprehensivetrainingprogrambasedontheperformancerelatedphysicalfitnessrequirementsforfirefighters.

3. CFFM’SFPFEwasdesignedtoensurethatCF/DNDfirefighterapplicantsarephysicallycapableofcarryingouttheirduties.CFFM’SFPFEcomplieswiththeCanadianHumanRightsAct(1985)andtheevaluationportionmeetstheBonaFideOccupationalRequirements(BFORs)describedinSection15ofthatAct.

4. ItisessentialthattheevaluationprotocolsandinstructionsprovidedinthisOperationsManualbeadheredto,inordertoensurevalidandreliableresults.Safetyisparamountwhenadministeringthisevaluation.Therefore,youmustensurethattheevaluationisconductedinthesafestmannerandenvironmentpossible.

CHAPTER 1

ADMINISTRATION

GENERAL

1. Theevaluationprotocolhasbeen designedtoevaluatephysicalfitnessinfirefighterapplicants.Itisproperlydescribedasa“hybrid”evaluationprotocolsinceitconsistsoftwocomponents:alaboratoryevaluationforaerobicfitnessandatask-simulationevaluation(6job-relatedtasks).

2. Eachcomponentoftheevaluationrepresentsanimportantaspectoffirefighting,andtherefore,inordertoachieveanoverallpass,itisnecessarytosucceedateachindividualcomponent.Thisalsomeansthatfailingonecomponentresultsinanoverallfailureoftheevaluation.

3. Thereisaspecificlevelofperformancethatisassociatedwitha“passingscore”.Applicantsshouldbeencouragedtodotheirbestinallcomponentsoftheevaluation.

4. It is essential that the evaluation protocols in this Manual be followed, as described, in order to ensure evaluation results are valid and reliable.Yourtaskistoadministertheevaluation.Theevaluationshouldtakeapproximately3hoursperapplicant.

5. FireChiefsand/orMilitaryCareerCounsellorswillcomparetheapplicant’sresultsagainsttheMinimumStandardtodetermineifhe/sheisphysicallypreparedforthejobofFirefighter.TheevaluationcanbeusedasaPASS/FAILevaluationORaRANKINGSYSTEM.Bothareexplainedinthismanual.

PRE-EVALUATION INSTRUCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES FOR EVALUATORS

6. Theevaluatormustbeopenandsensitivetoinformationabouttheapplicant.Rapportwiththeapplicantisimportantinordertogatherinformationwithrespecttohisparticipationinamaximalphysicalfitnessevaluation.Thiswillassistyouinmakingcorrect“decisions”suchaswhethertheevaluationshouldbeconductedorstopped.

7. Inordertocreatecredibilityandenhancethepotentialforcooperation,thePSPFitnessandSportsInstructorshouldbefriendly,positive,physicallyfitandproperlydressed.TherequiredclothingattireforevaluatorsisPSPuniformwithproperlogo.Thedignityoftheapplicantmustberespectedatalltimes.

8. Inordertoensuresafetyandconsistentresults,theevaluationprocedureshavebeenstandardized.Nevertheless,“Clinical Judgement”and“Common Sense”mustbeexercisedthroughoutallphasesoftheevaluation,forifoneistoerr,itmustalwaysbeonthesideofsafetyandtheapplicant’shealthandwell-being.

9. PSPFitnessandSportsInstructors/coordinatorsareresponsibleforthecompletionandaccuracyofeachreportDND2485.OnlyDGPFSSpersonnelwhoareCEPorCPTqualified,assanctionedbytheCanadianSocietyforExercisePhysiology(CSEP),andwhoreceiveformaltrainingandcertificationbythePSPTCintheconduct,administration,traininganddeliveryoftheCFFM’SFPFEareauthorizedtoevaluatethisprogram.

10. Medical Clearance Form for Civilians (AnnexB)shouldbegiventoapplicantswellinadvanceoftheevaluationappointment.TheapplicantisresponsibleforhavingthisformcompletedbyaphysicianpriortohisFitnessEvaluation.

11. Acopyofthe“CanadianForcesFireMarshal’sFirefighterPre-EntryFitnessEvaluation(CFFM’SFPFE)Information&InstructionforApplicants”isattachedatAnnexA.AnApplicantBooklethasalsobeendevelopedtoprovideinformationastohowoneshouldpreparefortheevaluation.

12. Inaddition,priortobeginningtheevaluation,youshouldbrieflyexplaintheCFFM’SFPFEtotheapplicant.Thisshouldinclude:

a.thevariouscomponentsoffitnessthattheevaluationmeasures;b.ashortdescriptionoftheassessmentitems(fulldetailstobegivenpriorto

eachactivity);c.anoutlineofthesafetyaspects(i.e.:healthquestionnaire,built-in

precautions,HR,bloodpressure,etc,requirementtostopifunusualpainsordifficultiesareexperienced,nottoholdtheirbreathduringanyportionsofthetasks);and

d.evaluatorswillnotdiscussscoresduringtheevaluation;theleadevaluatorwillreviewthescoresbeforesigningtheapplicantout.

PRE-EVALUATION INSTRUCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES FOR PARTICIPANTS

13. Inordertoensurevalidandaccurateevaluationresults,FireChiefs,RecruitingCentresand/orevaluatorswilladviseapplicantsatleast48hourspriortotheirappointments,thattheyshouldnot:

a.undertakevigorousexerciseforatleastsixhours(6hrs)beforetheevaluation;

b.consumealcoholatleastsixhours(6hrs)beforetheevaluation;andc.eat,smoke,ordrinkteaorcoffeeforatleasttwohours(2hrs)before

theevaluation.

14. Applicantsshouldbeadvisedofthefollowingclothingrequirements:Shorts, two T-shirts, running shoes, extra socks, warm-up clothing, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the evaluation session, including boots.YourT-shirtwillbewetfromsweatafterthetreadmillevaluation.Youshouldchangeintoadryshirtandthenputonyourwarm-upgeartokeepwarmduringthe60-minuterestperiod.Dependingontheevaluationlocationandtimeofyear,itmaybeadvisabletohavesweatstowearduringtherecoveryperiod.

15. CivilianApplicantswillarrivewiththeirmedicalclearanceformproperlyfilledout,photoIDandpayment.

REPORTS AND RETURNS

16. TheCFFM’SFPFEform,DND2485,willbetheonlyformusedtorecordindividualresults.ThecompletedformwillbesenttotheRecruitingCentreorthehiringFireChiefwhowillsignanddistributethecopiesasindicated.AllcopieswillbetreatedasProtectedBwhencompleted.

17. DistributionofDND2485willbeasfollows:Copy1–ApplicantCopy2–FireChieforRecruitingCentreCopy3–DGPFSS/DFitforresearchpurposesCopy4–PSPFitnessandSportsSectionCopy5–BaseSurgeon(CFpersonnelonly)

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

18. WhentheCFFM’SFPFEisproperlyadministered;thereisminimumrisktotheapplicant.

19. Notwithstanding,anemergencyprotocolshallbedevelopedincollaborationwiththeMedicalSupportStaff.Itshallbepostedinavisibleandaccessiblelocation.Emergencyphonenumbersaretobeclearlypostedatalltelephonesandshouldbewrittenonthebackofyourevaluationclipboard.The emergency phone numbers are to include the local ambulance or emergency service and hospital and / or closest medical clinic. The name and telephone number of the applicant’s emergency contact / next of kin should be noted on the evaluation form.

20. Additionally,allevaluatorsshallbetrainedincardiopulmonaryresuscitation(CPR)andEmergencyFirstAid.WhenevaluationsareconductedonCFestablishments,practicedrillsoftheemergencyprotocolshallbeconductedatleastsemiannuallyandwhenanynewevaluatorsand/orprogramsupportstaffareemployed.

21. Evaluatorsmustalsobefamiliarwithmaximalexerciseevaluationsandabletorecognizesignsandsymptomsofcardiovascularandmusculo-skeletaldistress.Inordertomaketheevaluationprotocolasrealisticaspossible,applicantsmustwearfirefightingprotectiveclothingthattrapsheat.Evaluatorsmustalsobefamiliarwithsignsandsymptomsofheatstress.

EQUIPMENT LIST

22. ListofequipmentisdividedintoGeneralequipment,TreadmillevaluationandTaskspecific.Listasfollows:

a. General Equipment and Supplies• Measuringtape(preferablyabout45m(150’);• Clipboards;• Ducttape;• Stop-watches(3);• Trafficpylons(10);• Non-sliprubbermats(5–6);• Tableandchairs;and• Mopandbucket.

b. Treadmill evaluation• Treadmillwithaminimumofa15%incline.Treadmillmustbecalibrated

andbeabletoreachatrue15%incline.

g. Task # 5 Ladder Climb• Heavy-dutyextensionladder7.3m(24’).Asingleflyladdercouldbe

used,bearinginmindthattheapplicantclimbstothe10thrung,sotheactuallengthoftheladdermustextendatleast2mpastthe10thrung;

• TheladderissetupagainstasecurewallasshowninH-6below;• Theladdershouldbesecuredtothewall.Itisrecommendedthatthe

baseoftheladderbeplacedonanon-sliprubbermat(FigureH-7);• Thetopoftheladdershouldbetiedoff;• Asshowninthephotobelow,a“come-along”strapisusedtosecurethe

10thrungtoan“eye-bolt”onthewall.Thisservestwopurposes.Firsttheladderismoresecure,andsecond,theapplicanthasavisualtargetatthe10thrung.ThisarrangementisalsoshowninFigureH-8;and

• Fallprotectionishighlyrecommended.ThesimplebelaysystemshownbelowcanbereplacedbyaretractablelanyardsystemshowninFigureH-9.

CHAPTER 2

PRELIMINARY ADMINISTRATION

a. Fitness Evaluator:

1. Beforetheapplicantarrivesfortheevaluationappointment,afilefoldershouldbepreparedthatislabeledwiththeapplicant’snameand/oridentificationnumber.Allrelevantformsshouldbeincluded(e.g.,DND2485,Consentform[AnnexC],Treadmilldataforms[AnnexE]).Thisfilefolderwillfollowtheapplicantthroughouttheevaluation.Thegreeterisresponsibleforhandlingthepre-evaluationstage,andwill“handoff”theapplicantandhisfiletothetreadmillevaluationcrew.Applicantswillnotcarrytheirdataforms.

2. 13. Evaluator’sobservations.YouwillconfirmthattheapplicanthasfollowedthePre-EvaluationInstructions.Non-compliancewiththeinstructionsdoesnotnecessarilymeanpostponement.However,onemustbeawarethatitmayhaveanegativeeffectontheresults.

BLOCK D – VITAL SIGNS (DND 2485)

14. Vital Signs.RestingHeartRateandRestingBloodPressureareinfluencedbymanyfactors.Nervousnessandanxietyinanticipationoftheevaluationmayelevatetheapplicant’sHeartRateandBloodPressure.Afewminutesofinformalchattingcandomuchtocalmapprehensiveapplicant.Takethetimetoanswerquestionsandtoexplaintheevaluationprocedures.Thiswillhelpminimizetheapplicant’sanxiety.

15. Priortoadministeringvitalsigns,havetheapplicantseatedcomfortably(preferablyinachairwitharmrests)feetflatonthefloorforapproximatelyfiveminutes.Duringthistime,completeDND2485BlockAandB.

16. Measuring Resting Heart Rate(RHR).Themeasurementoftherestingheartrateistobedonebyusingastethoscope.Positionthestethoscopeinyourearswiththeearpiecespointingforward.Thediaphragmofthestethoscopeshouldbeplacedeitheronthesternumoroverthesecondintercostalspaceonthelefthandside.Itmaybeplacedovertheapplicant’st-shirt.Shoulditnotbepossibletoutilizeastethoscope,restingheartratemaybemeasuredbypalpatingtheradialartery.Forthisprocedure,theindexandmiddlefingersshouldbeusedtogentlyapplypressureontheinsideofthewristjustbelowthethumb.Therestingpulseisdeterminedusinga15-secondcountandthefirstbeatiscountedas“zero”.Thetotalnumberofbeatsinthe15-secondcountisthenmultipliedby4togiveavaluein“beatsperminute”(bpm).

17. IntheeventthattheRHRexceeds100beats/minute,waitanadditionalfiveminutesandrepeattheprocedure.ShouldtheRHRstillexceed100beats/minuteonthesecondreading,theapplicantshallbereferredtoanMOorfamilyphysicianutilizingtheDND582.Theapplicantshallnotperformtheevaluationuntilappropriatemedicalclearanceisreceived.

The resting pulse is determined using a 15-second count. Count the first beat as “zero”. RHR exceeds 100 bpm on the second reading: refer to MO.

18. Measuring Resting Blood Pressure(RBP).Whenconductingrestingbloodpressure(RBP)astethoscopeandsphygmomanometershallbeused.Anappropriatesizeofbloodpressurecuffshouldbechosenandappliedtotheapplicant’sleftarm.Additionalproceduresare:

a. Thecuffshouldbewrappedsecurelyaroundtheleftarmwiththelowermargintwoorthreecentimetresabovetheantecubitalspace.Thearmshouldbecomfortablysupportedatanangleof10°to45°fromthetrunkwiththeloweredgeofthecuffatheartlevel;

b. Locateandnotethebrachialarteryandtheantecubitalspacebypalpation;c. Positionthestethoscopeinyourearswiththeearpiecepointingforward;d. Locateradialartery;e. Closethevalveontheairpumpbyturningthethumbscrewinaclockwise

directionuntilitistight;

g. Quicklypositionthediaphragmofthestethoscopeoverthebrachialartery.Applyaminimumamountofpressureonthediaphragmofthestethoscopesoasnottodistorttheartery.Thediaphragmshouldbeincompletecontactwiththeskin.Thestethoscopeshouldnottouchthecufforit’stubing;

h. Releasethecuffpressureatarateofapproximately2 mm Hg per second;i. Thesystolicbloodpressureisdeterminedbythefirstperceptionofsound

(Korotkoffsound).Notetheexactnumericallineonthescalewhereyouhearthisbeat;

j. Thediastolicbloodpressureisdeterminedwhenthesoundsceasetobetappinginqualityandarefullymuffled;and

k. Thecuffisthendeflatedtozeropressureandremovedfromtheapplicant’sarm.

19. Intheeventthattherestingsystolicbloodpressure is greater than 144 mm Hg and/ortherestingdiastolicbloodpressureis greater than 94 mm Hg,have

theapplicantrestquietlyforfiveminutesbeforerepeatingthemeasurement.Ifaftertworeadings,theapplicantsrestingsystolicbloodpressureand/orrestingdiastolicbloodpressurearestillgreater,theapplicantshallnotbepermittedtoundertaketheevaluation.RefertotheMOorfamilyphysicianutilizingtheDND582.

20. Automated BP Monitors.WhenconductingtheCFFM’SFPFE,bloodpressureshouldbemeasuredusingasphygmomanometerandstethoscope.TheuseofautomatedBPmonitorsisamatterforreview.CurrentDGPFSSpolicyinmanycaseswillalignwiththeCanadianSocietyforExercisePhysiology(CSEP),whichpermitstheuseofautomatedBPmonitorsbyhearingimpairedfitnessappraisersonly.However,BasesandWingswhowishtoutilizetheautomatedbloodpressuredevicesareauthorizedtodoso,providedthattheDirectorateofMedicalPolicyapprovesthedevice.

21. RecordthenumericalvaluesfortherestingheartrateandbloodpressureontheDND2485BlockD.

22. Youhavecompletedthepre-evaluationscreening.Youwillnow,consideringallfactorsanddirectives,makethedecisiontoproceedorpostponetheevaluation.

23. Ifyoupostponetheevaluation,sendtheapplicantbacktotheRecruitingCentreorthebaseFireChiefwithandappropriateexplanationfordoingso.

24. Fit Heart Rate (HR) Monitor:ProvideaHRmonitorandhelptheapplicantputitoncorrectly.Makesurethatthemonitorisworkingproperly.Thecheststrapshouldbequitesnug.Theheavyclothingandself-containedbreathingapparatus(SCBA)packwillfrequentlycausethestraptomove(anddisruptiontransmission)ifitisloose.

ISSUE TURNOUT GEAR

25. Thecombinationofprotectiveclothingandself-containedbreathingapparatus(SCBA)isgenerallyreferredtoasPersonalProtectiveEnsemble(PPE).Atmostlocations,itisexpectedthatapplicantswillbeissuedgearfromthelocalfirehallorprovidethereown.Thisgearmustbeconsistentwithcurrentsafetystandardsandrepresentativeofthetypeofprotectivegearusedbythefiredepartment.

26. Thegearmustbecheckedtoensurethatitfitsproperlyandthatallcomponentsarepresent.Forexample,thesuspendersandwaistadjustmentsonthefirefightingpantsmustbecompleteandfunctional.Eachapplicantmustbewearingthefollowingensemble:

• Flash-hood;• Jacket(includingliner);• Pants(includingliner);• Rubberboots;and• Leatherworkgloves(notfirefightinggloves).

27. HelmetsandSCBAwillbeissuedtotheapplicantattheevaluationsites(treadmillandjob-related),howeverthiscouldvarydependingonwheretheevaluationisdone.

28. SomeapplicantswillhavelittleornoexperiencewithturnoutgearandSCBA;allevaluatorsmustbefamiliarwithPPEtoensureproperfitandcorrectuse.Evaluatorsmustalwaysbeabletocheck“ataglance”tomakesurethatthegearisworncorrectlyandisingoodoperatingcondition.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

• Theevaluationwilltakeapproximately3.5hourstocomplete.Duringthistime,theapplicantmustremainintheevaluationareas,underthesupervisionoftheevaluators;

• Theapplicantmustobeyallinstructionsfromevaluators;• Thetreadmillevaluationisdonefirstandisfollowedbya60minute

recoveryperiod;• Duringtherecoveryperiod,theapplicantshouldcool-down,rehydrate

andrest.Asmallsnackmaybeeatenifdesired.Thegreetershouldchecktomakesurethattheapplicanthaseitherbroughtfluidsorisawareofwherefluidsareavailable;

• Remindtheapplicantthattheevaluationsareextremelystrenuous,so“smart”hydrationandnutritionproceduresareessentialtoavoidgastricdistress.Itisbettertoeatanddrinktoolittlethantoomuch;

• “Energydrinks”likeRed Bullaremorelikelytocauseproblemsthanaidperformance.Theyshouldbeavoidedunlesstheapplicantusesthemregularlyduringverystrenuousexercise;

• Duringthetreadmillevaluation,applicantswillloseapproximately500mlofbodywaterinsweat,andtherefore,shoulddrinkabout500mlofwaterorsportsdrinkduringtherecoveryperiod;

• Itisunlikelythatmorethan500mlcanbeabsorbedbythegutinonehour,thereforedrinkingsignificantlymorewillprobablyresultingastricdistressduringthejob-relatedtasksevaluation;

• Theapplicantmaytakesipsofwaterorsportsdrinkduringthepracticesessionandduringtherestperiodsbetweenthejob-relatedtasksevaluation;

• Applicantswillwalkforthemajorityofthetreadmillevaluation;• Duringtheevaluation,thegradeandpossiblythespeedwillbe

increasedatregularintervalsuntiltheapplicantistootiredtocontinue.Itispossiblethattheapplicantwillneedtorunneartheendoftheevaluation;

• INALLCASES,theapplicantmustexercisesafely.Iftheevaluatorsareconcernedaboutsafety,theevaluationwillbestopped;

• Runningisneverallowedduringthejob-relatedtasksevaluation;• After60minutesofrecovery,applicantswillcompleteafamiliarization

sessiononthejob-relatedtasksevaluation.Thisismandatoryandmaynot,underanycircumstances,beskipped.

CHAPTER 3

FITNESS ASSESSMENT

SECTION I - TREADMILL EVALUATION PROCEDURES

1. Therearetwoversionsofthetreadmillevaluationdependingontheavailabilityofametabolicmeasurementsystemforanalysisofrespiratorygasexchangedata.TheprotocolusingametabolicmeasurementsystemisdescribedinAnnexK.Thetreadmillevaluationwithouttherespiratorygasexchangewillbeusedinmostevaluationsitesandisdescribedbelow,showninFigure3-1.

2. Ineithercase,thecriterionforpassingtheevaluationisbasedonthecompletionofaspecificamountofexercise.Thatis,thescreeningcriterionrequiresthattheapplicantcompletethestandardizedwarm-up(5minutesduration)andanadditional8minutesofworkataspecifiedspeedandgrade.Ifanapplicantcompletesthefirst13minutesoftheprotocol,thenhe/shehaspassedtheevaluation.

3. Applicantsmayberankedontotalexercisetime.Totalexercisetimeisameasureofoverallphysicalworkcapacity,whichisrelatedtoVO2peak,butisadistinctphysiologicaloutcomeandshouldnotbeusedtopredictorinferVO2peak.InterpretationoftheEvaluationScorescanbeseeninAnnexH,TableK-1ofthePerformanceStandards.

TREADMILL EVALUATION PROTOCOL OVERVIEW

4. Atleasttwoevaluatorsarerequiredtoadministerthetreadmillevaluation.Intheabsenceofthemetaboliccart,thegreetercanfulfillthisrequirement.Thetreadmillevaluationisacontinuousgradedexerciseevaluation.Thenormalend-pointisreachedwhentheapplicantindicatesthathe/sheisunabletocontinueduetoexhaustion.Otherreasonstostoptheevaluationmayinclude:• theapplicantmaydecidetoendtheevaluationpriortothepointof

exhaustion;• theevaluatormayendtheprotocolforsafetyreasons;and• theevaluatormayendtheprotocolbecausethesubjectdoesnotcomply

withinstructions.

CALIBRATION

7. Itisessentialthatthetreadmillspeedandgradeareaccurate.RefertoAnnexFforinstructionsoncheckingtreadmillcalibration.Coverthetreadmillconsole’sdigitaldisplayofthetime,sotheapplicantisnotmisled,theactualtimewillbemarkedbytheevaluator’sstopwatch.

Theapplicantshouldbeinstructedongeneralprinciplesoftreadmillsafety,correctstartingandstoppingprocedures,communicationduringtheevaluation,andevaluationend-points.SeeAnnexL(CanadianForcesFireMarshal’sFirefighterPre-EntryFitnessEvaluationScript)forfurtherinformation.Evaluatorsshouldnotmakeassumptionsthatapplicantswillknowwhatisexpected.Evaluatorsmustbeproactiveaboutcontrollingtheevaluationenvironment,notreactivetowhatthesubjectdoes.

9. Priortothewarm-up,theevaluatorsshouldexplaintheRPEscale(AnnexM)andconfirmhowtheywillacquireresponsesduringtheevaluation.Forexample,itisoftenconvenienttomountthechartonthebackofaclipboard,placeitinfrontoftheapplicantandallowtheapplicanttopointtotheappropriateresponse.Thechartmayalreadybemountedonthewallinfrontofthetreadmill.Theevaluatormaypointtoeachresponseinturnandtheapplicantcansignal(e.g.,“thumbsup”)whentheevaluatorpointstothecorrectresponse.

10. Theratingofperceivedexertion(RPE)shouldberecordedattheendofeachminuteofexercise.WhiletheRPEisnotpartoftheevaluationresultperse,thedataprovidesveryusefulinsightintothefatiguestateofthesubjectduringandaftertheevaluation.

11. ThedegreeoffatiguecanbeevaluatedthroughdirectobservationandtheRPEresponsesatpeakexercise.

COMMUNICATION

12. Evaluatorsmustmaintainaregulardialoguewiththeapplicant.Theapplicantmustbeinformedinadvanceofeverychangeofspeedorgradeandmustacknowledgetheirwillingnesstocontinue.

13. Theapplicantcanspeaktotheevaluators,butitisstilladvisabletoalsouseasimplesystemofhandsignalsforcommunication.

14. Theapplicantsimplygivesa“thumbs-up”asapositiveresponsetoquestionsfromtheevaluatorsuchas,“Thegradewillbeincreasedin15seconds.Canyoucontinue?”Whentheapplicantwishestostoptheevaluation,he/shemusttapadesignatedspotonthesafetyrailofthetreadmill.Thisshouldbedoneasawarningsignalapproximately15secondsbeforetheapplicantmuststop.Theevaluatorsthenhavetimetoconfirmthattheevaluationwillstopinafewsecondsandremindtheapplicantoftheactiverecoveryperiod.

15. Clearcommunicationbetweenapplicantandevaluator,andeachmemberoftheevaluationcrewisabsolutelyessential.EachpersonshouldknowexactlywhattheotherisdoingatalltimesforboththetreadmillandtheJob-relatedtasks.

Example:• Evaluator A (lead) – Gives instructions, Time, control’s the grade and

speed of the treadmill; and• Evaluator B (Assist) – Record data (RPE and HR), have the backup time.

16. Attheendofthetreadmillevaluation,theapplicantwillmovetotherecoveryareaforonehourbeforebeginningthefamiliarizationforthejob-relatedtasksevaluation.Thegreeteroroneofthetreadmillevaluationcrewshouldhavethedesignatedresponsibilitytoescorttheapplicanttotherecoveryarea,anddeliveringtheclipboardwithdatasheetstothejob-relatedtaskcrew.

MEASUREMENTS

17. Duringtheevaluation,itisessentialtokeepanaccuraterecordofexercisetimeandthecorrespondingworkloadparameters(speedandgrade)foreachminuteoftheevaluation.Allclocksshouldbesynchronized.

18. APolarheartratemonitor(orsimilarsystem)shouldbeusedtorecordHRduringeachminuteofexercise.

19. RecordHRandRPEneartheendofeachminuteoftheevaluation(orasindicatedonthedatarecordingsheet).Forexample,thereadingsforthe8thminuteoftheevaluationshouldbetakenatapproximately7:50(min).

20. RememberthatHRdoesnotchangeimmediatelywhenexerciseloadchanges,soitisimportanttoallowasmuchtimeaspossiblesotheHRresponseisrepresentativeofthetimeassociatedwithit.

21. RememberthatRPEisasubjectiveresponseinrelationtothe“perception”ofeffortorexertion.Wecannotrelyonsomeone’smemoryofhowtheyperceivedthestressofapreviousworkload;therefore,itisessentialtogatherthisinformationduringtheworkload.

WARM-UP

22. Eachapplicantperformsanidenticalwarm-uponthetreadmilltoprepareforphysicalexertion.Thewarm-upconsistsof5-minutesofwalkingataconstantspeedof3.5mph(93.9m.min-1)withaprogressionfrom0-6%grade(2minutesat0%,1minuteat2%,1minuteat4%,and1minuteat6%grade).

23. Theevaluationclockstartsassoonasapplicantiswalkingfreelyonthetreadmill.Theapplicantmaynotholdonatanypointduringtheevaluation.Holdingontothehandrailwillendtheevaluation.

SCREENING PHASE

24. Thescreeningcriterionisbasedonanintensitythatisconsistentwiththeaerobicenergyrequirementsduringinitialattackfirefighting.Thework-rateonthetreadmilltypicallyrequiresanaveragerateofoxygenconsumptionof34ml.kg-1.min-1,whichisconsistentwiththeaverageVO2reportedbyresearchontheaerobicdemandsoffirefightingwork.

25. Theworkloadforthisstageis3.5mph(93.9m.min-1)and10%grade.Thespeedrepresentsanormalorslightlybriskwalkformostindividuals.Theselectionofspeedandgradewasbaseduponextensiveresearch.Thiswalkingpaceappearstobeuniversallysuitableforawiderangeinage,stature,massandaerobicfitness.

26. Anapplicantpassesthescreeningportionoftheevaluationbycompletingtherequiredamountofexerciseconsistingof:

• Thestandardizedwarm-up(5-minutes);• Constantworkphase(8-minutes);and,• Thestandardizedcool-down(5-minutes).

27. Successfulcompletionofthescreeningportionoftheevaluationyieldsatotalexercisetimeof13minutes.Whilecompletionoftherecoveryphaseisessentialforsafetyreasons,recoverytimeisnotconsideredtobepartoftotalevaluationtime.Ifanapplicantisunabletocompletethescreeningprotocol,thatwouldbegroundsforfailureontheaerobicevaluation.

SELECTION PHASE

28. Uponcompletionofthescreeningstage,applicants,proceedimmediatelytothenextphaseoftheevaluation.Theoutcomemeasureforthisphaseistotaltreadmilltime.Theapplicantistakentothepointofmaximalexertionthroughacombinationofsmallincreases,firstingrade(1%everyminuteuntil15%)andthenspeed(increasedby0.5mphor13.4m.min-1eachminute)untilvolitionalexhaustion.ApplicantscanthenberankedontotaltimecompletedTotalexercisetimeisrecordedinminutesandseconds(min).

29. Forexample:• Ifanapplicantterminatestheevaluationattheendofthescreening

phase,record13:00min.• Ifanapplicantterminatestheevaluationafter15minutesand30seconds

ofexercise,record15:30min.

30. Normally,theevaluationisendedwhentheapplicantsignalsthathe/shecannotcontinue.HOWEVER,inordertotaketheapplicanttothepointofmaximalexertionsafely,itisessentialthattheevaluatormaintainconstantandclearcommunicationwiththeapplicant.Theimportanceofthisacquiredskillcannotbeoverstated.

EVALUATION END POINT

31. Theapplicantshouldbeinstructedtousethehandrailsforsupportwhilethespeedandgradearedecreasedrapidlytotherecoverysettings(2.0mphor53.6m.min-1and0%grade).

32. Itisessentialtorecognizethattheevaluationprotocolmustbecompletedsafely,andhenceanyunsafebehaviourorsignsofexcessivefatiguecouldalsobegroundsforterminatingtheevaluationbeforetherequiredtimehasbeencompleted.

COOL-DOWN (RECOVERY)

33. Uponcompletionoftheevaluation,applicantsarerequiredtoperformastandardizedcool-downconsisting(5-minutesat2.0mphor53.6m.min-1and0%grade).Thespecificexerciseloadmaybeadjustedatthediscretionoftheevaluator.Forexample,tallerindividualsmayfeelmorecomfortableataslightlyfasterspeed.

34. Afterthetreadmillevaluation,mostapplicantswillbeverywarm.Asrapidlyaspossible,thefollowingstepsshouldbecompleted:• Removalofthehelmet;• Removalofglovesandflash-hood;• Looseningofthejacketcollar;and• Providingtheapplicantwithwaterandatowel.

35. Itisunsafetoremovetherestofthegear(e.g.,SCBA,jacket)whiletheapplicantiswalking,anditismoreimportanttomaintainanactiverecovery.Donotremoveanyothergearuntilthecool-downphaseiscompleted.Mostapplicantsshouldberecoveredenoughtostopexerciseafter5minutes.Ifnecessary,applicantsmayremainonthetreadmillforlongerthan5minutes.

36. Theevaluatorsshoulddetermineinadvancewhowillassumetheseresponsibilitiessothatthetransitionfrommaximalexercisetorecoveryiscompletedsmoothly,rapidlyandefficiently.

37. Itshouldbeemphasizedthattherecoverystageisconsideredessentialforasafetransitionfrommaximalexertiontostoppingexercise.Therefore,otherthaninexceptionalcircumstanceswherethesafetyoftheapplicantisinquestion,the5-minuterecoveryperiodispartoftheevaluationprotocolthatmustbecompleted.

38. Monitor HR during recovery. MostapplicantswillbeverywarmandHRmaynotdropasquicklyasmightbenormallyexpectedifsubjectsweredressedinnormalexerciseclothing.Nevertheless,evaluatorsshouldstillobserveasignificantdropinHRduringrecovery.Othersignsandsymptomsshouldbemonitoredcarefullyandevaluatorsshouldcheckfrequentlywiththeapplicanttoverifythathe/sheisfeelingOK.

39. Monitor signs and symptoms during recovery.Evaluatorsmustmaintaintheirvigilancesinceproblemssuchasnauseaandlightheadednessaremorelikelytopresentduringrecoverythanduringexercise.

40. Attheendoftherecoveryperiod,theevaluatormustwarntheapplicanttoholdontothesafetyrailsecurelyandstraddlethetreadmillbelt.Oncetheapplicantisclearofthebelt,itissafetostopthetreadmill.

41. Whenthetreadmillhasstopped,advisetheapplicantofhowtodismountthetreadmill.Applicantsshouldbeinstructedtoholdontopartofthetreadmilluntiltheyaresafelyandsecurelyonthefloor.

42. Oncethetreadmillevaluationisover,theoverallevaluationtimeaswellasfinalHRandRPEvaluesarerecordedonAnnexE(treadmillDataForm)andfillinBlockEofDND2485.Theapplicantisallowedexactly60minofrecoverybeforestartingthefamiliarizationsessiononthejob-relatedtasks.Forexample,ifthetreadmillevaluationendsat10:50AM,theapplicantwillbeginthefamiliarizationsessionat11:50AM.

43. Beforeplacingthedatasheetintheapplicant’sfile,theevaluatorshouldreviewthesheetcarefullytoensurethatallrequiredinformationhasbeenrecordedaccurately.

44. Thesecondevaluatormustverifythatalldataarecorrectlyrecorded.Thatis,nothinghasbeenforgottenandthattheevaluationdataisaccurate.Rememberthatoften,someoneelsewillbetransferringthedataintoareport.Therefore,itisessentialthatallresultsbecheckedforaccuracyandcompletenessatthisstage.

45. Finally,bothevaluatorsshouldrecordanycommentsabouttheevaluation.Thisisanimportantstepwhethertheevaluationwascompletelynormaloriftherewereanyabnormalities.AcommentshouldalwaysbeenteredontheTreadmilldataform,(AnnexE)todocumenttheend-pointoftheevaluation.

TASKS EQUIPMENT & CALIBRATION

47. ItisessentialthatallequipmentiscompliantwiththespecificationsasindicatedintheEquipmentlistinChapter1ofthismanual.MinorvariationsmaybeaccommodatedthroughadjustmentsconsistentwithinformationprovidedinAnnexG(Job-RelatedTaskCalibration).

EVALUATION AREA SPECIFICATIONS

48. Thejob-relatedtasksarecompletedonasmoothconcretefloor.Theamountofworkrequiredforthechargedhoseadvance,theropepullandthevictimrescueisrelatedtothefrictionofthesurface.MinorvariationsmaybeaccommodatedthroughadjustmentsconsistentwithinformationprovidedinAnnexG(Job-RelatedTaskCalibration).

49. Theremustbeanunobstructeddistanceofapproximately140’(42m)inordertoaccommodatethechargedhoseadvance.Theremustbeasuitablewalltosetuptheladder,withprovisionforappropriateanchoringoftheladder.Theremustbeawatersupplysuitableforchargingthefirehose.SeeEquipmentlistinChapterIofthismanual.

One notable exception is made for the treadmill evaluation; running shoes are substituted for firefighting boots.

Figure 3-4 illustrates the correct starting position for the job-related tasks. The applicant should be in this position to start each evaluation.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

52. Atthebeginningofthefamiliarizationsession,thegeneralrulesandproceduresshouldbereviewed.Evaluatorsshouldincludethefollowingpoints:

• Therearesixjob-relatedtasksevaluation;• Thereisa3-minuterecoveryperiodbetweeneachtask;• Duringtherecoveryperiods,applicantsshouldwalkandstretchifdesired.

They may not sitorliedownexceptinexceptionalcircumstances;• Duringtherecoveryperiod,itispermissibletoraisethevisorandremove

thegloves;• Attheendoftherecoveryperiod,theapplicantmustbeinpositionforthe

nexttaskwithglovesonandvisordown.Duringthefamiliarizationperiod,evaluatorsshouldinformapplicantsthata30second“warning”willbeissuedpriortothestartofthenexttask.Atthistime,applicantsshouldbeintheimmediateareaofthenexttask,shouldbegintodonglovesandlowerthevisor;

• Theevaluatorshouldgiveamplefeedbackontimeremainingduringtherecoveryperiod.Theevaluatorsareresponsibleforensuringthattheapplicantisdressedandinpositiontostartthenexttaskbeforetheendoftherecoveryperiod;

• Thenexttaskmuststartwithin 5 secondsoftheendoftherecoveryperiod;

• Applicantsmaydrinkwaterorsportsdrinks(nootherdrinksoranyfoodispermitted).ApplicantsshouldbestronglyadvisedtoSIPwatertoavoidgastricdistress;

• Allequipmentneededfortheevaluationshouldbebroughtintotheevaluationareapriortothestartoftheevaluation(waterbottles,towels,etc.).Evaluatorswillfillwaterbottlesifnecessary.“Outsidehelp”suchasassistancefromfriends,otherapplicantsorfamilyisnotpermittedforsafetyreasonsandtolimitdistractions;

• Eachtaskevaluationistimedandshouldbecompletedasquicklyaspossible,howeversafetyisofprimaryimportance;

ahead. Refer to Figure 3-4 for an illustration of the starting position;• The“clock”startsassoonastheapplicantmovestobeginthetask.Thetime

stopswhentheapplicanthascompletedthetaskandreachedadesignatedend-point;

• TheapplicantshouldwearaPolarHRmonitorduringthejob-relatedtasksevaluation.ItisrecommendedthattheHRreceiver(the“watch”)beattachedtotheSCBAharnesssothattheevaluatorscancheckHRfromtimetotimeduringtherecoveryperiods;

• EvaluatorsshouldexpecttoseeveryhighHRvaluesduringtheevaluationperiod,dueinparttothephysicalexertionanddueinparttotheheatstressthatmayoccur.EvaluatorsshouldroutinelymonitorHRimmediatelyaftereachjob-relatedtaskandagainjustpriortostartingthenexttask.HRmaynotdeclineasrapidlyasexpectedbecauseofthermalstress,howeversomereductionisexpected.Evaluatorsmustbecomefamiliarwiththisandintheabsenceof“normal”HRrecoverytakestepstoinvestigate;

• Post-evaluationandrecoveryHRshouldbenotedonthedatarecordingform;• Rarely,anapplicantwillsliporstumbleduringthejob-relatedtasks.Ifitis

clearlyaminorincidentwithnosafetyimplications,theapplicantshouldbeencouragedtokeepgoing;

• HOWEVER,ifthereareanyconcernsaboutsafety,theevaluationprocedureshouldbestoppedimmediately.Ifafterinvestigation,theapplicantisabletocontinue,theequipmentshouldbereset,andthetaskrestarted.A3-minuterecoveryperiodshouldelapsebetweenthetimeoftheincidentleadingtotheinterruptionoftheevaluationandtherestartofthenexttrial;

• NORMALLY,theseincidentscanbeattributedtoalackofcontrolbytheapplicant.Beforerestartingthetask,theevaluatormustmakecertainthattheapplicantunderstandsthatfurtherincidentswillleadtodisqualification;

• Atalltimes,theapplicantisrequiredtopaycloseattentiontoinstructionsfromtheevaluators;and

• Theapplicantmaynotleavetheevaluationareawithoutpermission.

FAMILIARIZATION/PRACTICE

53. Theapplicantshouldbealloweduptoaboutfiveminutesateachstation.Duringthistime,thespecificrulesandproceduresforeachtaskwillbereviewedandtherewillbeopportunitiestopracticethetask.

54. Fiveminutesisgenerallymoretimethanisrequiredateachstation.Evaluatorsshouldnottimethefamiliarizationtoostrictly,butrather,shouldbemindfulthatthewholeprocessshouldbecompletedinapproximately30minutes.

55. Itwouldbeexceptionalforthefamiliarizationperiodtoextendbeyond30minutes.Ontheotherhand,itwouldbeinappropriatetostarttheactualtasksevaluationifthefamiliarizationstephadnotbeenproperlycompleted.

56. Evaluatorsshouldinvestsomeeffortindevelopinganeffectiveplantoprovidegoodinformationwithoutspendinganinordinateamountoftime“explaining”everycontingency.Agoodruleofthumbistoprovidethebasicinformation,lettheapplicantattemptthetask,makeanynecessarycorrections,repeatthepracticeifnecessary,andthenprovidetheapplicanttheopportunitytoaskquestionsbeforemovingon.SeeAnnexL,CanadianForcesFireMarshal’sFirefighterPre-EntryFitnessEvaluationScript.

57. Thepracticesessionmustbecompleted.Therearenoexceptions.

58. Duringthepracticesession,theevaluatorshouldconfirmthattheapplicantisfullyawareofallprocedures.Usephrasessuchas,“Doyouunderstand?”and“Doyouhaveanyquestions?”Makesurethattheapplicantrespondsclearlytothequestions.

59. Applicantsmustwearfirefightingboots,pantsandworkglovesduringthepracticesession.At-shirt(withsleeves)andshortsmustbewornunderthefirefightingjacketandpants.Sleevelesst-shirtsarenotallowed.

TROUBLE-SHOOTING

62. Fromtimetotime,evaluatorswillencounterapplicantswhodonotfollowtheinstructions.Itisessentialthatapplicantsrespecttheprocedures,therulesandtheequipment.Thefollowingpointsshouldbehelpfulinresolvingproblems:

• Evaluatorsshouldexpectthathighlymotivatedapplicantswill,foravarietyofreasons,“breaktherules”.Forexample,anapplicantmaytrytorunwiththechargedhose.Oneofthemainpurposesforthefamiliarizationstepistoidentifypotentialproblemswithindividualapplicantsand“niptheminthebut”;

• Evaluatorsshouldpracticeoneachothertodevelopoptimalstrategiesforidentifyingproblemsanddealingwiththemexpediently.Evaluatorsshouldbearinmindthatallinfractionsarenotdeliberate,andshouldgivetheapplicantthebenefitofthedoubtinthefirstinstance.Repeatedinfractionsleadtomoreseriouspenalties;

• Thesameprocedureshouldbefollowedintheactualtask.Aneffectivepolicyisasfollows:

o Theapplicantmaycontinueifthe“problem”iscorrectedIMMEDIATELYafterawarning.Ifasecondwarningisrequired,thetaskisstopped;

o Theapplicantisgivenanotherchanceatthetask.Whileoneevaluatorresetstheequipment,theothermustaddresstheproblemdirectlywiththeapplicant;

o Thesecondchancemustcommenceassoonaspossibleaftertheequipmentisreset.Noadditionalrestisallowed;and

o Theapplicantmustbeawarethatafurtherinfractionwillresultindisqualification,whichmeansfailureonthattask.Afailureonanysingletaskleadstoanoverallfailure.

• Someapplicantsmaybeverytentativeandthisshouldalsobecorrectedduringthefamiliarizationperiod.Inthiscase,theevaluatormustencouragethetentativeapplicanttoworkharder;

• Forexample,Applicant“A”picksupthehose,startstowardsthefinishlineinagaitthatistooslowtogainmomentum.Evaluator“B”shoutsimmediately,“Pickitup…goharder!”If“A”reactsandincreasesthepaceimmediately,theproblemislikelydealtwith.If“A”doesn’trespondimmediately,“B”shouldshout,“STOP”.Theproblemshouldbediscussed,thehoseresetand“A”givenanotherchancetodoitcorrectly.Inthiscase,doingthetaskcorrectlyinvolvesgainingmomentumtocountertheincreasingresistanceofthehose;

• Someapplicantsmaytryto“short-circuit”thefamiliarizationinanattemptto“savetheirenergyfortherealtaskevaluation”.Itisessentialthateachapplicantshowagoodeffortduringthefamiliarizationperiod.The familiarization period is compulsory, and non-compliance may lead to disqualification;

• Inanycasewheretheapplicantisnotresponsivetotheinstructionsoftheevaluator,theevaluatorshouldimmediatelyadvisethesupervisor,whointurn,shouldtakeappropriateaction;and

• Inrarecases,anapplicantwillbeunabletocompletethefamiliarization.Insuchcases,thesupervisorshouldtakechargeofthesituation.Ineachcase,thewarm-upactivityrepresentslessthantheactualtask.Ifaphysicallimitationisidentifiedduringthefamiliarization,thereislittlepointincontinuingandtheapplicantshouldwithdraw.

ANNEX D – CANADIAN FORCES FIRE MARSHAL’S FIREFIGHTER PRE-ENTRY FITNESS EVALUATION – EVALUATION DESCRIPTION

To ensure that you are ready for the demands of the firefighter trade, you will be asked to undergo a Physical Fitness Evaluation as a part of the recruiting process. Successful completion of this evaluation is a necessary step toward being accepted into the firefighter training.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PHYSICAL FITNESS EVALUATIONS

Thisprogramisdesignedtoevaluatethephysicalworkcapacitiesofhealthy,physicallyactiveindividuals.Eachtaskrequiresamaximaleffort.Allofthetasksarecompletedwhilewearingfirefightingpersonalprotectiveequipment(PPE)thatweighsapproximately22kg(50lb).Thisensembleincludes:helmet,flash-hood,gloves,pants,boots,jacketandself-containedbreathingapparatus(SCBA).YouwillnotbreathefromtheSCBA,butyoumustcarryit.Forsafetyduringthetreadmillevaluation,runningshoesaresubstitutedforfirefightingboots.

Thefirstcomponentisatreadmillworkcapacityevaluation.Aftercompletingthetreadmillevaluation,youwillrestfor60minutesbeforestartinganorientationtothejob-relatedtasks.Theorientationtothejob-relatedtasksevaluationconsistsofa“walk-through”sessiontopracticeeachofthetasks.Thiswilltakeapproximately30minutesandwillfamiliarizeyouwithevaluationproceduresaswellasprovidesasuitablewarm-upforthedemandingevaluationthatfollow.

Eachtaskisfollowedbyarestperiodof3minutesforrecoveryandhydration.YouarenotpermittedtoleavetheevaluationareaorremovethePPEduringtherestperiods.Thetasksaredescribedbrieflyinthefollowingpages.1. Aerobic Endurance

ANNEX F - TREADMILL CALLIBRATION

Treadmill CalibrationThetreadmillshouldbecheckedeachevaluationdaytoensurethatthespeedandgradearecorrect.Thisisessentialsincethecriteriaforpassingtheevaluationrequiresthattheapplicantcomplete13minutesofexercisethatconsistsofspecificspeedandgradesettings.Ifthespeedand/orgradeareincorrect,thenitispossiblethatindividualswhoshouldfailwillpass,oralternately,individualswhoshouldpasswillfail.

Thissectionprovidessimpleguidelinesforcheckingthecalibrationofthetreadmill.Actualadjustmentofthesettingstoensurepropercalibrationmayrequireservicebyaqualifiedtreadmilltechnician.Checkthemanualforthetreadmilltoseeifadjustmentsarepossible.Alternately,thestepsdescribedbelowallowevaluatorstocheckforcalibrationerrorsandcompensateforthem.

Treadmill SpeedThespeedofthetreadmillistypicallyreportedonthedisplayinmilesperhour(mph).Ifatreadmilldisplayisinkilometersperhour(kph),Seetreadmill’soperationmanualorvisitthemanufacturewebsiteonhowtochangethedisplayoryoucanusethissimplecalculationtoconvertfrommetrictoEnglishunits.Helpfulconversionsare:

Speed in kilometers per hour x 0.62 = speed in miles per hour

Speed in miles per hour x 26.82 = speed in meters per minute

Themajorityoftheevaluationiscompletedat3.5mphandtherefore,thisisthemostimportantspeedtocalibrate.Inmostcases,calibrationshouldberobustforarangeofspeeds,anditshouldnotbenecessarytocalibrateforallpossiblespeeds.Forexample,ifthetreadmilliscorrectat3.5mph,thenitwillalsobecorrectthroughouttherangebetweenabout3.0and5.0mph.Thiscanbeverifiedonanindividualbasisifnecessary.

Tocheckthecalibrationofthetreadmill,thefollowingequipmentisrequired:• Measuringtape(longenoughtomeasurethelengthofthebelt);• Markingtape(athletictapeorducttape);• Stop-watch;and• Calculator.

First,determinethelengthofthetreadmillbelt.Thismaybeavailablefromatechnicalmanual,butiseasilymeasured.

Next,calculatethenumberofbeltrevolutionsexpectedat3.5mph(93.9m/min).Forexample,ifthebeltlengthis4.3m,thenat3.5mph,yourcalculationswillreveal:

• 21.8revolutionsperminute;• 2.75secondsperrevolution;and• 55.1secondsfor20revolutions.

• Setthetreadmillat3.5mphandhaveoneevaluatorwalkonthebelt(thisisimportantasthebeltspeedisoftendifferentwhenthetreadmillisloadedorunloaded);

• Thesecondevaluatorshouldmeasuretheelapsedtimeforagivennumberofrevolutions,notingeachcompleterevolutionthemarkingtapepassesthetapeonthetreadmilldeck(seeFigureG-2);

• Intheory,youcouldmeasuretheelapsedtimeforonerevolution,howeverthe“experimentaltime”isshort(2.75s)andtheinfluenceofreactiontimeandmovementtimecouldresultinasignificanterror.Timingareasonablylargenumberofrevolutions(e.g.,20)diminishesthiserrorsignificantly.Reactionandmovementtimearenowverysmallcomparedtoarelativelylarge“experimentaltime”.Youraccuracymaybeimprovedbypractice,bydoingseveralrepetitions,orhavingmorethanonetimer;

• Iftheactualelapsedtimeisthesameasthepredictedelapsedtime,thenthetreadmillspeeddisplayisaccurateandnothingfurtherisrequired;

• Iftheactualelapsedtimediffersfromthepredictedtime,thenadjustthespeedcontrolupordownslightlytocompensateforthedifference,andrepeatthetimingprocedure.Thismayhavetobedoneseveraltimes;

• Forexample,youmayfindthatwhenthespeedcontroldisplays3.6mphthatthebeltspeedisactually3.5mph;

• Bearinmindthatbyfollowingtheabovesteps,youhavenotcalibratedthetreadmillspeed.However,youhavecheckedthespeedandtakenstepstocompensateforanydifferencebetweenthedisplayonthespeedcontrollerandtheactualspeedofthebelt;and

• Ifrequired,contactatechniciantoproperlycalibratethetreadmill.
