President’s Message

Happy Fall everyone! As this is my first official communication with our membership I want to take the opportunity to officially say hello, and to thank you for your continued support to the training community in Canada. I recently took over for Dr. Brent Hayman Abello and have recei-ved the benefit of his wisdom and guidance to prepare me for this role. To recap the last several months, in June, at the International Congress of Applied Psychology / CPA convention, our pre-convention workshop on June 25th provided valuable information on Program Evaluation and Quality Improvement and was presented by Drs. Susan Farrell, Ian Ni-cholson, Ada Sinacore, and Stewart Madon. The worksheets from this valuable workshop that we-re produced in the smaller working groups are currently being assembled by CPA to put together some resource sheets that we can all use moving forward. Thank you again, to the presenters for sharing their expertise with us and we look forward to seeing the finished product! For those of you who did not make it to our pre-convention workshop, we also awarded Dr. Susan Farrell with the CCPPP Excellence in Professional Training award which is well deserved! Also in June we saw some shifts in the executive. While Dr. Costigan completed her term as Past President, we were very fortunate to retain her on the executive in her new role as Secretary. Dr. Gosselin vacated her Member at Large spot to move into the President-Elect position but due to staffing changes at work, has vacated this position meaning that the president elect position will remain vacant until the 2019 AGM. We also welcomed Dr. Lesley Lutes on board as a new Mem-ber at Large. Our student representative, Julie Wershler completed her two year position with our executive and we welcomed Brooke Beatie into this role this summer. Finally, the executive graciously accepted the ongoing support and expertise of Dr. Kerri Ritchie, our current CPA repre-sentative on the CPA Board of Directors, with our listserv and website management needs. Our events and meetings at ICAP/ CPA this June were also full of other important information and changes. We discussed practicum hours and recommended totals within academic settings prior to the internship year. A working group was forged, headed by Dr. Diane Lachapelle, and they are going to work over the course of the next six months to a year to come up with some recommen-dations that can be brought forward to the next CCPPP Executive meeting held in June 2019 in Halifax, NS. We also voted on and approved the introduction of five, $100 student awards to be drawn lottery style for internship applicants to offset some of the travel costs associated with going to inter-views. Finally, after the positive feedback on the 2-step interview notification process started last year, the membership voted to continue with this method going forward. This newsletter will ha-ve the important dates and time listed in a separate article. Also, we did have representatives from the ASPPB come to Montreal to speak to our group about the enhanced EPPP2 and the plan-ned implementation. An update came from ASPPB in August, 2018 indicating their intention to delay the mandatory implementation moving instead toward a voluntary implementation.

SAVE THE DATE: CCPPP Pre-Convention Workshop 2019

Issues that continue to sit on our radar are the ongoing concerns for cross border mobility for training as we recently were made aware of one US student who was considerably detained before finally being able to obtain a work visa to attend their internship in Canada. Represen-tatives from APPIC and the APA of Graduate Students (APAGS) have recently begun collabora-ting to collect information for students and Training Directors to help in this regard, and have connected with CCPPP to consolidate as much information as possible. Since June, we welcomed two new internship programs into the CCPPP (CAP – The Child and Adolescent Psychology Centre in Aurora, Ontario and Counselling and Clinical Services –University of Alberta in Edmonton, AB). Welcome

A very warm welcome

to our two newest mem-

bers of CCPPP.

Aurora, Ontario:

Edmonton, Alberta:

The Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) recently released their latest revision of the ASPPB Supervision Guidelines for Education and Training leading to Licensure as a General Applied Psychologist and ASPPB Su-pervision Guidelines for Licensed Psychological Associate for public comment. As indicated on their website, the ASPPB’s guidelines for su-pervision were last released in 2002, but those have since been retired and they have been in the long process of gener-ating new ones. They decided to divide the guidelines into multiple areas of supervision, and then release drafts of these revised versions as they were created so as to disseminate the information in the most efficient manner possible. Their five areas of supervision guidelines are:

- for the education and training of Health Service Provid-ers (released August 2015)

- for Mandated Supervision (released February 2018) - for the education and training of General Applied Psy-

chologists - for nondoctoral psychology service providers - for non-licensed persons providing psychological ser-

vices. They have now released drafts the third and fourth sections on the above list – ASPPB Supervision Guidelines for Education and Training leading to Licensure as a General Applied Psy-chologist, and ASPPB Supervision Guidelines for Licensed Psy-chological Associate.

Increasing Student Engagement in CCPPP

My name is Brooke Beatie, I am a 3rd year student in the Clinical Psychology PhD program at the University of Manitoba, and I am excited to be your new CCPPP Student Representative! The primary objective of the CCPPP Student Representative is to increase student engagement. It is my understanding that some students are unaware of CCPPP and, more importantly, they are unaware how engaging with CCPPP can benefit them. In an effort to increase student engagement, students can make note of the following tips (and benefits) for students and CCPPP program members: Students:

Email the Student Representative [[email protected]]. My role involves representing the needs and views of professional psychology students across Canada

and acting as a liaison between students and the CCPPP executive. I communicate with the CCPPP executive, providing them with information on student training issues/concerns and student feed-back on their training experiences. Thus, I want to hear from YOU!

I am also happy to answer questions about training, particularly in regard to the pre-doctoral intern-ship process.

Connect with us on Facebook [https://facebook.com/ccpppstudent]. Here, you will find updates on student training and tips for the internship application process. You can also connect with fellow students by posting on the page; ask questions or provide your fel-

low students with tips that have been helpful to you. Visit our website [https://ccppp.ca/resource-documents].

Our website has a page dedicated to students, including information and advice about the internship application process and additional resources (e.g., sample interview questions).

CCPPP Program Members:

REMINDER: Forward emails from CCPPP to your student body, highlighting relevant information for them.

Help your students understand the role of CCPPP early in their graduate training. We recommend including information about the CCPPP in your graduate orientation packages.

Encourage your students to visit the CCPPP website, Facebook page, and connect with the Student Representative.

Ms. Brooke Beatie, CCPPP Student Representative

Page 7: Canadian Council of Professional Psychology Programs ...Professional Psychology Programs Conseil canadien des programmes de psychologie ... To recap the last several months, in June,

Several years ago, CCPPP programs in the APPIC match in Canada began testing a new universal notifi-cation day – the first Friday in December. After the success of this new protocol, this past year we pi-loted a new two-step process for internship interview notifications. Specifically, we trialed adding to the Universal Notification day a Universal Response Day on the following business day. Our hope was to streamline the notification and interviewing scheduling process while also decreasing anxiety and stress in both future interns and internship sites. Given feedback from the students and members at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) this past June, we are happy to say that we are continuing to use the 2-step interview notification and booking system this coming year. Therefore, CCPPP members have agreed to adhere to the following: Friday, December 7, 2018 - Universal NOTIFICATION Date. That is, all applicants applying at Canadian Internship Sites will be informed of their interview status on this day but no interviews will be booked until the following Monday. Monday, December 10, 2018 - Universal RESPONSE/BOOKING date. This is the date applicants can be-gin contacting sites who have offered them interviews. Specifically, that means student can start book-ing their interviews with their internship sites at 11:00 am EST on Monday, December 10, 2018. With regard to booking interviews, please also remember that CCPPP member programs have agreed to the following windows for completing INTERVIEWS across the country: East/Atlantic January 2 -16 Central (Ontario, except Thunder Bay) January 9-23 West (Thunder Bay and Western Provinces) January 16-30

We wish everyone another successful year of matching excellent students with excellent internships in a (somewhat) less chaotic

manner!

CCPPP Awards for Excellence in Professional Training –

Seeking Nominations!

It is time to consider who you would like to nominate for the annual CCPPP Awards for Excel-lence in Professional Training! The CCPPP Executive is seeking nominations for amazing col-leagues and/or mentors for these awards, which are intended to recognize outstanding contri-butions to the professional psychology training of graduate students/interns. Contributions can include teaching in the area of professional psychology, supervision in practica and internships, development of textbooks on professional training, administrative mentorship, citizenship within the larger training environment, and the development of innovative programs for profes-sional training of graduate students/interns. It is not necessary that a recipient of the award excel in more than one of those areas of profes-sional training. Typically, though, outstanding contributions will take time to amass and so award recipients often will have made multiple contributions over a period of time. Only psy-chologists who are members of internship sites or university programs that are CCPPP members are eligible for the award. Nominations may be made, though, by any graduate student(s)/interns(s) in psychology who has received or is currently receiving training from an eligible psy-chologist, or by any psychologist(s) in a CCPPP program Nominations should be sent to Brent Hayman-Abello ([email protected]) by De-cember 1, 2018. These should include a nomination letter containing information about the ba-sis of the experience the nominator has had with the nominee, relevant evidence to document the person’s excellence in professional training, and may also include letters of support from the nominee’s peers, as well as opinions of current and former graduate students/interns. Full details on the award and nomination process can be found on the CCPPP website at https://ccppp.ca/award Please note that the policies and procedures for the award were recently revised (slightly) based on feedback from past Awards Committees (largely clarifying timelines, expectations of typically a longer period of contributions, and options for nominees who do not win to be con-sidered again the subsequent year). Please feel free to share with others in your program.

To date, 82 programs have updated their information on the website/directory and paid their

dues. Thank you to everyone for your diligence in getting this done. One programs has updated,

but we have not received their cheque at this time. Another 3 programs have not yet com-

pleted a yearly update, nor paid their dues. All unpaid programs have been emailed monthly. If

you have not yet logged into the website to update and pay, we ask you to do this at this

time. Please note, if the DCT or TD of your program changes, it is very important to login and

update with the new information, and ensure your successor knows how to login as well.

Anyone having any difficulty remembering their password, having website issues, or needing

help in any way can contact our treasurer Susan Jerrott at [email protected].

Please note, any unpaid program by the end of December will have to be removed from our

membership unless Dr. Jerrott has heard from you directly with explanation.
