Density will long be remembered as an outstanding sire of highly productive daughters with good udders. Still sound and virile at nearly 11 years of age, Density continues to provide natural service use at Schaff Angus Valley.

With little fanfare or promotion, Density continues to sell well year in and year out as customers worldwide recognize the long-term value of his daughters.

Commercial ranches around the globe have used Density to correct udders, feet, depth and real world qualities in their cow herds.

The Genex Fertility Advantage

GENEX LAUNCHES PREGCHECK™ FERTILIT Y RANKING

Beef sire fertility data has always been high on the wish list of Genex members, customers and sales representatives, yet has proven highly elusive. That is, until now. Genex is pleased to

launch PregCheck, the first sire fertility evaluation in the beef industry.

The historical method to evaluate semen fertility was for a trained veterinarian or lab technician to check semen with a microscope for percent live sperm cells, motility and morphology. In fact, every collection of semen produced by Genex is evaluated multiple times in the lab before it’s approved for use in the marketplace. Lab analysis is very effective in ensuring semen has been properly processed, frozen and handled. However, lab analysis of bull semen only tells part of the story. The semen of two different bulls may look very similar under the microscope, yet perform very differently when used in cows. A far better method is to let the cows tell us which bull’s semen is most fertile, and that’s what PregCheck does.

The dairy industry has had sire conception rate evaluations for decades. Routine pregnancy checks, standard farm management software, high artificial insemination (A.I.) use and lack of natural service sires allows modern dairies to capture large amounts of highly accurate breeding data that’s difficult to obtain from beef ranches. Recently Genex has worked with several large dairies to generate PregCheck rankings for beef sires. Beef semen is used on the dairy, a veterinarian pregnancy tests cows at 30 to 40 days post-breeding and reconfirms at 60 to 80 days. Pregnancy results are entered in the farm’s computer software and ultimately this data becomes part of the Genex fertility evaluation run approximately every 90 days.

The evaluation model is the same model used for so many years for dairy sires, except set to a beef base, meaning beef sires are compared against other beef sires. Many variables are statistically accounted for in the model, these include: technician, herd effect, age of cow, milk production levels, number of previous breedings and many others. This highly sophisticated genetic evaluation model, along with accurate on-farm data, results in PregCheck data that is extremely sound and reliable. It should be noted that PregCheck is not an EPD, but can be read and utilized similarly to an EPD or a performance ratio. See the sidebar for information on how to interpret PregCheck data.

In some herds, focusing heavily on maximizing the number of early born, A.I. sired calves is imperative. Using high ranking PregCheck sires from Genex will help do so, versus using unproven young sires or unknown sires from other sources. Using proven, high ranking PregCheck sires from Genex is a great way to stack the deck in your favor!

For most situations, PregCheck will become a part of the A.I. sire selection criteria, but should not be the only criteria. Using PregCheck proven sires will allow the ranch to achieve more pregnancies to A.I., thus reducing labor at calving by tightening the calving window, weaning older heavier calves and making genetic progress at a more rapid rate. Like A.I. sires with proven EPDs for calving ease or growth traits, a sire with a PregCheck ranking will help reduce risk versus the unknown.

PregCheck is an evaluation of the bull’s frozen semen conception rates, not natural service capabilities of his sons or fertility level of his daughters.

While one goal is certainly to find the extremely high fertility bulls, PregCheck arguably offers greater value as a culling tool. Genex has already removed bulls from the lineup due to poor PregCheck evaluations, and will continue to do so as data is available on more bulls. While this decision has sent some genetically solid bulls back to the breeding pasture, rest assured that Genex is committed to providing the most fertile semen in the industry. This dedication to high fertility allows Genex members, customers and sales representatives to use Genex beef sires with a greater confidence, knowing these bulls have not only met the traditional laboratory evaluation but also passed the test on the farm/ranch. Check out the PregCheck rankings throughout this year’s Beef Genetic Management Guide, and watch for more data throughout the year on the Genex website.

how to use PregCheCk:PregCheck is set to a 100 base system, meaning a value of 100

is average. Every one point difference is then equivalent to a one

percent difference in conception rate. For example, if Sire A has

a PregCheck of 102 and Sire B has a PregCheck of 100, Sire A is

predicted to be two percent higher in conception rate than Sire B.

By Stan Lock, Beef Large Herd Development Manager

In recent years one of the most asked questions has been: when are we going to rebuild beef cow numbers in the

U.S.? No doubt the drought over the western U.S. has taken its toll and restocking will require more time as the range recovers. Another obstacle for cattlemen is the availability of water in many western states as demand from cities, industries and other agricultural sectors continue to grow. Many acres of grazing land have been converted to row crops thinking eight-dollar corn would last longer than it did. Let’s face it, when the markets shift, the future looks bright, so many tend to jump on the bandwagon. In order to be successful in the cattle business you have to be passionate about what you do and enjoy the lifestyle regardless of the price of feeder cattle.

These are just a few reasons rebuilding cow numbers will be very challenging, and I’m not sure we need to be in a hurry to get back there. However, it can be done in a profitable manner by building marketing equity with the end producer in mind. Marketing equity is a value premium that a producer realizes because the product is easily recognized and is superior in quality and reliability. Genex customers such as, John Barnhart owner of JB Cattle Co. of Vienna, Missouri, and Herb Holzapfel from Willow, California, have capitalized on marketing equity for years by producing reliable products that consumers recognize.

The consumer of the future will want to know the production history of the commodities they purchase. They will demand products that identify how the animals were handled and cared for, are from known places of origin, and are healthy and safe.

JB Cattle Company is a family operation in the rolling hills of the Ozarks where fescue is the main forage available. This can be a stressful environment, as temperatures will vary from below zero in the winter to 100 degree highs with extreme humidity in the summers. John only uses Genex high accuracy sires to build “designer cattle” for this area. He wants cows that calve on time and can perform on stockpiled grass with very little feeding of harvested forage while still delivering a marketable package. The JB fall-born steers have been marketed the last 14 years on the April or May Superior Livestock video sale for August delivery. John sees a premium for these steers not only because of the exposure Superior Livestock gives him, but also from being able to market pot-loads of cattle that are consistent in size and type. All heifers are retained for replacements, and then JB markets all bred cows when they reach seven years of age. Eighty percent of these females are A.I. sired by Freightliner, New Day, Final Answer, Objective 3J15 and Right Answer. They see a premium for these females because of the consistency and quality from being A.I. sired. JB produces their own cleanup sires from their small registered herd using these same genetics. Currently, 1200 units of Thunder have been used in 2013 and 2014 to produce the next group of elite calves for this program. JB works closely with Dale Edwards, Genex Independent Contractor, in utilizing the Genex chute-side service program to accomplish the synchronization and A.I. in a timely manner.

Holzapfel Ranch runs over 1000 cows between two ranches, one in Willow and one in the high desert area of north central Oregon. With over 25 years of A.I. using high accuracy sires

Herb is able to offer many 1/2, 3/4 and 7/8 siblings to his bred heifer market. Uniform groups of steers are marketed on video auction when they reach 750 to 800 pounds.

In fall 2014, Holzapfel Ranch A.I. bred over 1200 cows and heifers utilizing Genex sires. With dedication to his A.I. program Herb predicts that 90% of his cow herd will be sired by Net Worth and Density within the next two years. Herb avoids using extreme calving ease sires on mature cows and prefers a six frame female. He contends that you cannot get close to having consistency and uniformity of your calf crop without using high accuracy A.I. sires. Geoff Bitle, Genex Independent Contractor, helps the ranch achieve this by assisting with their A.I. program.

Here are two different operations that recognize the value in building marketing equity by utilizing high accuracy sires to produce consistent cattle. By doing so, Herb and John market a uniform set of steers that command premiums, as these cattle are known to produce 60 to 70% Certified Angus Beef carcasses. The real bonus is the lifetime value of the females produced from these programs.

By utilizing Genex chute-side service and high accuracy sires we make it easy and affordable for cattle producers to add marketing equity to their herds. So you'll see, at Genex we are about more than selling semen. For us, getting a female bred is the first step, not the last. Our goal is to offer customers the programs that will enhance their profitability and marketability. With cattle prices at an all-time high, now is the time to let us go to work for you by building marketing equity in your herd so you can be prepared for the future.

By Bob Weaber, Ph.D., Cow-calf Extension Specialist/Associate Professor, Department of Animal Science and Industry, Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas

T he dramatic changes and volatility in cow/calf production system input costs and calf values have

many producers wondering about the value of heterosis in today’s beef industry pricing structure. Many producers are seeking ways to improve cow/calf production efficiency and profitability. Profitability may be enhanced by increasing the volume of production (i.e. the pounds of calves you market) and/or the value of products you sell (improving quality). The reduction of production costs, and thus breakeven prices, can also improve profitability. Better yet, improving the input:output ratio should enhance profit.

For commercial beef producers, the implementation of technologies and breeding systems that increase the quality and volume of production and reduce input costs is essential to maintain or improve the competitive position of the operation. Some producers are thinking of establishing a more conventional straight breeding system to improve end-product value traits and want to understand the value they are giving up as they sacrifice heterosis. Other producers are considering the establishment of a planned crossbreeding system to capture the value of hybrid vigor. Either way, to make an informed decision, producers need to know the value generated in their herd by heterosis or hybrid vigor.

To fully understand the trade-offs, it is essential to know what it is you sell and how you sell it. The lure of premiums for high quality beef carcasses is appealing; it gets lots of trade publication promotion and it can be profitable. No

doubt growing the top-line of the beef value chain and satisfying customers is important. That said, if you are a producer that sells calves at weaning, you have very limited opportunity to capture the value of selection pressure you place on end-product quality at the expense of other traits or loss in heterosis. Even if you own the cattle to harvest and are paid on a grid, you only get a fraction of the value of the improvement, albeit bigger than the calf premium.

Conversely, the value of heterosis affects every cow on your outfit and it is value you can capture every year no matter how you sell calves. More importantly, it’s not a $20, $40 or $60 premium per head you might get for selling calves or carcasses…the heterosis premium is much, much more.

The use of crossbreeding offers two distinct and important advantages over the use of a single breed. First, crossbred animals have heterosis or hybrid vigor. Second, crossbred animals combine the strengths of the parent breeds. The term ‘breed complementarity’ is often used to describe breed combinations that produce highly desirable progeny for a broad range of traits. With useful across-breed EPDs and adjustment factors, we can effectively select for improvement in a wide range of traits including carcass traits, while seeking to build environmentally adapted cows that leverage the power and value of heterosis.

Improvements in cow/calf production due to heterosis are attributable to having both a crossbred cow and a crossbred calf. Tables 1 and 2 detail the individual (crossbred calf) and

maternal (crossbred cow) heterosis observed for various important production traits. These heterosis estimates are adapted from a report by Cundiff and Gregory, 1999, and summarize crossbreeding experiments conducted in the Southeast and Midwest areas of the U.S. Heterosis generates the largest improvement in lowly heritable traits. Traits such as reproduction and longevity, essential for cow/calf profitability, have low heritability. These traits respond very slowly to selection but heterosis generated through crossbreeding can significantly improve an animal’s performance. To commercial producers the largest economic benefit (roughly 66%) of crossbreeding comes from having crossbred cows (Table 2). Crossbreeding has been shown to be an efficient method to improve reproductive efficiency and productivity in beef cattle.

A variety of crossbreeding systems yield 20 to 30% improvements in weaning weight per cow exposed, not including the additional value generated through sire selection within breed. This represents a substantial change

in output given relatively constant input. Simple examples of a 23% increase in weaning weight per cow exposed using a terminal sire/F1 (two cross) cow can generate $250 to $300 additional revenue per cow per year. I’m not aware of any set of calves that have generated carcass premiums of $250 premium per cow exposed regardless of breed or grid. With today’s calf prices the value of heterosis for a herd of 100 cows is $25,000 to $30,000 per year and represents a decrease in breakeven costs of more than $40/cwt. on 600 lb. calves.

A well-constructed crossbreeding system can have positive effects on a ranch’s bottom line. It not only increases the quality and gross pay weight of calves produced, but also increases the durability and productivity of the cow factory. As you determine to straight-breed or cross-breed, don’t give away a couple hundred dollars per cow to make a $20 to $60 premium per calf sold at market or on the rail when you can go for both!

E P D T E R M I N O L O G YEPD: Expected Progeny Difference – The expected differences in performance of a sire’s progeny when compared to the average progeny of all sires evaluated within the breed. Based on actual performance, progeny performance and relatives’ performance.

ACC: Accuracy – The reliability placed on the EPD.

CE, CED: Calving Ease Direct – The difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first–calf heifers.

BW: Birth Weight – The birth weights of a bull’s progeny when compared to the breed average, in pounds.

WW: Weaning Weight – The adjusted weaning weights of a bull’s progeny when compared to the breed average, in pounds.

YW: Yearling Weight – The adjusted yearling weights of a bull’s progeny when compared to breed average, in pounds.

UDDR: Udder Suspension (Hereford) – Differences in sire EPDs predict the difference expected in the sires’ daughters udder characteristics when managed in the same environment. Weak udder suspension results in pendulous udders that make it difficult for a calf to nurse.

TEAT: Teat Size (Hereford) – Differences in sire EPDs predict the difference expected in the sires’ daughters udder characteristics when managed in the same environment. Oversized teats are difficult for newborn calves to nurse and the calf may not receive adequate colostrum.

RADG: Residual Average Daily Gain (Angus) – The adjusted amount of post weaning gain in future progeny, in pounds, given a constant amount of feed consumed.

SCR, SC: Scrotal Circumference (Angus, Charolais, Hereford) – The adjusted yearling scrotal circumferences of a bull’s progeny when compared to breed average, in centimeters.

DOC (Angus) – The difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility.

CETM, CEM, MCE: Calving Ease Total Maternal, Calving Ease Maternal, Maternal Calving Ease – The difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first–calf daughters.

Milk, MM: Maternal Milk – The amount of pre–weaning performance gained by calves which can be attributed to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters, expressed in pounds of calf.

TM, MWW: Total Maternal, Maternal Weaning Weight (Red Angus, Simmental, Charolais) – Measure of a sire’s ability to transmit milk production and growth rate through his daughters. Predicts the weaning weight of a sire’s daughters’ calves. Equal to his milk EPD plus half his WW EPD.

M&G: Maternal Milk & Growth (Hereford) – The Milk EPD plus half the WW EPD. A sire’s M&G EPD reflects what he is expected to transmit to his daughters for a combination of growth genetics and maternal production.

ME: Maintenance Energy (Red Angus) – Differences in mature cow maintenance energy requirements. Expressed as megacalories per month.

HPG, HP: Heifer Pregnancy (Red Angus, Angus) – Differences in percent probability of female progeny conceiving to calve as 2-year-olds; a more accurate measurement than her sire’s or paternal brothers’ scrotal circumference.

MkH: Milking Herds (Angus) – Indicates the number of herds from which daughters are reported.

MkD: Milking Daughters (Angus) – Reflects the number of daughters having progeny weaning weight records included in the analysis.

MW: Mature Weight (Angus) – A predictor of the difference in mature weight of a sire’s daughters compared to the daughters of other sires, expressed in pounds.

MH: Mature Height (Angus) – A predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires, expressed in inches.

STAY: Stayability (Red Angus, Simmental) – Differences in percent probability of daughters staying productive past the age of six.

CW: Carcass Weight (Angus, Simmental, Charolais, Red Angus) – The adjusted carcass weights of a sire’s progeny, expressed in pounds.

MB, MARB, IMF: Marbling – A predictor of the difference in a sire’s progeny for percent marbling score or percent intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle compared to other sires.

YG: Yield Grade (Simmental) – Expressed as a deviation of Yield Grade units where negative values are desirable.

REA, RE: Ribeye Area – Adjusted ribeye area of a sire’s progeny, measured in square inches.

FAT, BF: Back Fat – The adjusted twelfth rib fat thickness of a sire’s progeny, expressed in inches.

SHR: Shear Force (Simmental) – Pounds of force required to shear a steak.

Carc H/P and Ult H/P: Group/progeny (Angus) – Reflects the number of contemporary groups and the number of carcass and ultrasound progeny included in the analysis.

I: Interim – The EPD is based on performance information of a bull’s sire, dam and relatives.

P: Pedigree estimate.

$EN: Cow Energy Value (Angus) – Assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires, expressed in dollar savings/cow/year. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals. $EN savings include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

Page 77: Canada Beef Genetic Management Guide

77

$W: Weaned Calf Value (Angus) – The expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit, expressed in $/head. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size.

$F: Feedlot Value (Angus) – Calculates a $/head difference in expected progeny performance for post weaning merit. $F uses WW and YW EPDs along with trait inter-relationships. Typical feedlot gain value, feed consumption and cost differences are accounted for in the final calculations.

$G: Grid Value (Angus) – Combines quality grade and yield grade attributes, and is calculated for animals with carcass EPDs, ultrasound EPDs or both types of EPDs. A three-year rolling average is used to establish typical industry economic values for quality grade and yield grade schedules.

$B: Beef Value (Angus) – The expected average dollar per head difference in the progeny post weaning performance and carcass value. The $B value is comprised of two pieces: $F and $G.

API: All–Purpose Index (Simmental) – Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with daughters retained and remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

TI: Terminal Index (Simmental) – Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold on a grade and yield basis.

BMI$: Baldy Maternal Index (Hereford) – An index to maximize profit for commercial cow/calf producers who use Hereford bulls in rotational crossbreeding programs on Angus-based cows and heifers. Retained ownership of calves is assumed, with fed cattle marketed on a Certified Hereford Beef® (CHB) pricing grid.

CEZ$: Calving EZ Index (Hereford) – Similar to BMI$, except Hereford bulls are mated only to yearling heifers. Increased emphasis on CE and MCE compared with the other index

BII$: Brahman Influence Index (Hereford) – This index is similar to BMI$, except Hereford bulls are used in rotational crossing with Brahman rather than Angus. Greater emphasis placed on traits deficient in Brahman-cross cattle, (fertility and age at puberty) and less on acceptable traits (growth and calving ease).

CHB$: Certified Hereford Beef Index (Hereford) – A terminal sire index where Hereford bulls are mated to British-cross cows and all offspring are sold as fed cattle on a CHB pricing grid.

HB: HerdBuilder (Red Angus) – Used by producers to increase the sustainability of the cow herd and ultimately their operation. HB assumes bulls will be mated to both cows and heifers, replacement females will be retained within the herd, and the remaining progeny will be sold on a quality based carcass grid.

GM: GridMaster Index (Red Angus) – Used by producers whose primary goal is to maximize profitability of feeders in the feedyard and on the rail. GM assumes bulls will be mated to cows only, and all progeny will be sold on a quality based carcass grid.

S I R E I N F O R M A T I O NGenetic Defects In the last couple of years several genetic defects have been identified in Angus and other breeds, defects which include Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH), Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA), Developmental Duplication (DD) and Osteopetrosis (OS). It is important for A.I. companies to be vigilant concerning genetic defects as the opportunity to increase the frequency of these negative traits on the population can be significant. With bulls selling 50 to 100,000 units, a single carrier bull can widely spread a genetic problem. Genex has worked hard to ensure this does not happen. All Genex bulls listed in this directory have either been tested or are known free by pedigree for the major genetic defects unless otherwise stated.

Pulmonary Arterial Pressure: (PAP) – PAP EPDs can be used to select for decreased PAP score, which is associated with a lesser incidence of high-altitude disease. EPDs are reported in units of mm Hg. Smaller or more negative EPDs are more desirable, just like lower numeric phenotypic PAP scores are more desirable.

Genex Quest Graduate – The Genex Quest Program is designed to collect performance and carcass data on Genex young sires from nationwide sources representing various types of operations. The Quest Graduate logo appears on sires that have excelled and graduated from the program.

P R E G C H E C K ™An evaluation of an individual sire’s frozen semen conception rate. The model and data collection process is the first of it’s kind in the beef industry. PregCheck is not an evaluation of future fertility in a sire’s daughters. For more information visit http://tiny.cc/vmw0qx
