• Germany soon took over Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Poland

• It also had the largest air force in the world.

Blitzkrieg (“lightning war”)

• A new type of warfare used to quickly conquer most of western Europe.

• Squadrons of German planes would suddenly appear to bomb a country’s military bases and factories.

• At the same time, hundreds of German tanks and thousands of troops would quickly move into that country’s cities.

• Using the “blitzkrieg,” Germany conquered Poland and France, each within a month.

• Within 3 months, Germany also conquered Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, and Belgium
