Cyberthreats• I’m a retarded (expletive) for ever believing that things would change. I’m

starting to regret sticking around, I should’ve taken the razor blade express last time around. Well, whatever, man. Maybe they’ve got another shuttle comin’ around sometime soon.

• If you think you’re better than those who take their own lives; you’re not. If you think you’re stronger than those who have taken their own lives; your not.

• It takes courage to face death. Knowing you’re going to die and actually following through takes heart, I don’t care who you are.

Does TV Damage Teen Brains?• Reported February 9, 2009• Watching a lot of TV during adolescence, an alarming new study has

found, can change a normal brain to a depressive one.

• Every extra hour a teen spends watching TV or playing videogames on an average day, he or she is 8 percent more likely to develop depression as an adult.

• TV teaches kids to be passive, and to judge themselves against fictional characters whose looks and accomplishments seem out of reach.

Impact• Online communications can be extremely vicious

• There is no escape for those who are being – cyberbulliedvictimization is ongoing, 24/7

• Cyberbullying material can be distributed worldwide and is often irretrievable

• Cyberbullies can be anonymous and can solicit the involvement of unknown “friends”

• Teens may be reluctant to tell adults what is happening online or through their cell phones because they are emotionally traumatized, think

it is their fault, fear greater retribution, or fear online activities or cell phone use will be restricted.

Is A Threat Real?

• Analyze the circumstances under which threats are made

• A high school student sent an anonymous IM to a friend threatening to harm her and her friends the following day at school.

• A high school student created an animated counter on his profile on a social networking site. Beneath the counter, which counts down days, hours and minutes, were the words, “until I kill Mr. (name of his math teacher).”

Laws and Legal Considerations• CCSD Regulation 5144 sets forth the rules that govern the search of a student's person

or possessions while at school.

• Students enjoy no privacy right in their desks and lockers and are advised of this in advance. Therefore, student desks and lockers can be searched at any time for any reason.

• Students do have a privacy right as to their person and personal possessions. However, while in school, this right is not absolute. The law allows school administration to invade a student's privacy and conduct a search based upon an "individualized, reasonable suspicion that the student is hiding evidence of wrongdoing (even though not necessarily criminal)" and the search is "necessary to maintain school discipline, order or safety, and to prevent the removal or destruction of evidence." The precise procedures for the search are set forth in Regulation 5144.

• Legal has determined that this rule would apply to allow an administrator to "search" a student's cell phone, MP3 player, or similar electronic device for evidence of wrongdoing (i.e., photos, images, videos, sound bytes, test messages, call logs, etc.) if the prerequisite "individualized, reasonable suspicion" exists. Furthermore, it is this office's position that if evidence of wrongdoing is found, the device may be confiscated until the wrongdoing is addressed, either by police or through the school's disciplinary process.

2009

School Responsibility - Criminal• Making threats of violence to people or their property.• Engaging in coercion (trying to force someone to do

something he or she doesn’t want to do).• Making obscene or harassing telephone calls (this includes

text messaging).• Harassment or stalking.• Hate or bias crimes.• Creating or sending sexually explicit images of teens (this is

child pornography).• Sexual exploitation.• Taking a photo of someone in place where privacy is

expected (like a locker room)
