Day 1

Can we create a better society?Planning Communities

SHARON WRIGHT:

Good day, student viewers! Sharon Wright here, fresh from my vacation in Norway visiting my friend Camilla. I’m not only relaxed, but I’m inspired. Camilla lives in a community where many people of all ages have a common pursuit: to live together, cook and eat together, and take care of each other. It sure was different from the way I grew up. It got me thinking about what kinds of communities are out there and also ponder another question: If I could build a perfect community, what would it look like?

REID MOORE:

Welcome back, Sharon! I’m remembering back to some months ago when we talked about the different kinds of communities we belong to or want to belong to. In this case, it sounds as though you’re talking about communities that are planned with certain goals in mind. In the past, many groups and individuals have tried to plan perfect communities. Have you ever heard of the word “utopia,” Sharon?

SHARON: Of course! It’s a television program, right?

REID: You’re kidding me, Sharon.

SHARON: Yeah, just pulling your leg, although there is a series called Utopia. So from what I remember, a utopia is an ideal community. These communities make commitments to the values of a group and the rules of the group. Some people have created religious communities, agricultural communities, peace communities—but I wonder if any have actually succeeded?

REID: Well, I think to varying degrees, many have. But many have failed as well. I’m thinking of the example of the Shaker religious community in Massachusetts, which failed because they didn’t allow people to get married and have children.

SHARON: That doesn’t sound like a community with a future!

REID: You’re right! They didn’t last very long. Not allowing marriage or childbearing kind of undermines the survival of a community. Other communities have done better but I don’t think any has ever endured a really long time. Would you call the community you visited in Norway utopian, or an ideal community?

SHARON: Well, I don’t think I’d call it a utopia, but I really like the shared values of the people who live there together. For example, I know many people here in the U.S. who spend most of their salaries on day care for their young children. In the Norway community, the older people take care of the little children during the day so that the children’s parents can work. So, these little kids have a number of grandparent figures, and their parents are happy that their kids are taken care of for free by their neighbors!

REID: Wow, that does sound different from the way we live here. I know my wife and I spent so much money on child care for our kids we weren’t able to accumulate any savings. But back to the community in Norway: What about people who have disabilities? How does the community deal with making things in their community accessible for them?

SHARON: People with disabilities are not only welcome, they’re central to how the community was planned. So, instead of modifying spaces for the handicapped, the community was planned with universal design principles.

REID: I remember hearing about universal design! Isn’t that the idea that architects and community planners should build beautiful and accessible buildings for everyone? If I were planning an ideal society, I’d make sure that everything was accessible to all, including schools, athletic facilities, movie theaters, and museums.

Day 1

Can we create a better society?

SHARON: I actually learned how important universal design can be! I broke my ankle while I was visiting Camilla and I had to use a wheelchair for a week. Everything was wheelchair accessible. I could not have gotten up the five flights of stairs to my apartment here in the U.S. because there is no elevator. So UD saved my vacation!

REID: UD?

SHARON: UD? Get with it, Reid! UD stands for universal design!

REID: Sorry, Sharon!

SHARON: Just kidding, Reid. But seriously, I learned firsthand what it feels like to not have access to everyday things. I’m going to design a perfect community and call it UDland.

REID: Or how about UDopia?

SHARON: I think we should both just stick to the news...

REID: But this is our last newscast, Sharon.

SHARON: Say it isn’t so, Reid!

REID: Well, I just wanted to thank our viewers for being such great students. We’ve really enjoyed our time with you all.

SHARON: We’ll miss you, student viewers! Keep up the great work! Thank your great teachers and start thinking about college and how you and your classmates can make the world a more just, beautiful, and accessible place. This is Sharon Wright signing off!

Turn, talk, and write: With a partner, talk about who you’d like to include in your ideal community and why.

Day 1

Can we create a better society?Discussing Community Problems and Solutions

Martin, Halley, Alyse, and Catherine are talking about problems in their community and how to resolve them.

Line1 Martin: All I want is for people to stop fighting and hurting each other. I can’t walk

through the park without seeing a fight or people yelling at each other.

2 Halley: Wake up Martin, people will always fight! People fight over the two swings that actually work or for a space to play a game on the run-down basketball court. What you see are people fighting over resources! Just like the water wars of Cochabamba.

3 Martin: People can be selfish, but people are also good. If we shared everything, then we wouldn’t have to fight. Remember the older man in Japan who helped after the earthquake and tsunami? He was helping people in need and wanted nothing in return. He felt a commitment to act.

4 Halley: Face it Martin, most people only look out for themselves and only pursue what’s in their own self-interest. That guy was one in a million.

5 Alyse: I disagree, Halley; there are lots of good people out there. I think the question really is: Why is the park in this condition in the first place? Who’s responsible for keeping this place up? Public spaces need to be protected. Our parents pay taxes to keep spaces like these safe and clean. If someone isn’t in charge, it’ll be the tragedy of the commons all over again! We need someone to enforce regulations!

6 Halley: Like I said, people just don’t care and regulations aren’t going to change that. I mean, look at the litter and bottles accumulating everywhere. We just had a community cleanup day last week, and now it looks about the same as before. Let’s face it, we can’t change the way things are.

7 Catherine: Well, that’s a defeatist attitude, Halley! You’re essentially saying that we have no role to play in modifying the existing order.

8 Halley: Translation, smarty-pants?

9 Catherine: What I’m saying is that we DO have a role in making a difference. We have to be thoughtful about the way to make change happen. We need to invite members of the community to express their ideas about what they want and need. That way we can get people to make a commitment to making the park a place where everyone is represented.

10 Martin: You mean like have elderly people, people with physical disabilities, little kids, basketball players, and kids like us come together and share a vision of the ways that we would all like to use the park?

11 Catherine: Exactly. Then, we could really design the park so that everyone could use it in the ways they would like to.

12 Martin: You mean like universal design? That sounds fantastic! Reader’s Theater continues on the next page.

Day 1

Can we create a better society?

13 Alyse: That sounds utopian! But where are you going to get the money? Who’s going to resolve conflicts that come up? Who’s going to make sure that everyone is safe? Who’s going to be in charge?

14 Halley: Well, if I were in charge, I’d exclude certain people from my park.15 Alyse: Oh, Halley, like who?16 Halley: For example, I wouldn’t let people who come from other neighborhoods into my

new park. That way we’d keep the park safe and clean.17 Martin: Well, that would exclude me then. 18 Halley: Why? You live in the neighborhood and we’re friends.19 Martin: Well, my news is that I’m moving in with my grandmother after school ends in

June.20 Alyse: What?21 Halley: What?22 Catherine: What? Why?23 Martin: We’re going to take care of my grandmother. She’s in a wheelchair and needs

us to help her with everyday stuff. 24 Halley: I didn’t know! And I’d still let you in, Martin!25 Martin: Well that would undermine your “neighbors only” rule! Besides, we couldn’t

come unless your park were wheelchair accessible. 26 Halley: I think I’m beginning to see the light. Too bad we’ll never be able to create a

utopian park, but I guess there’s no harm in imagining.27 Alyse: Well, maybe it’s not so impossible. My mom works for a place called the Future

Communities Foundation. My cousin had to interview an adult about their job and he chose my mom. She explained that a foundation is a place that gives money to people who propose really good ideas. Her foundation funds good ideas about how to create new community spaces. Maybe we could get some help to write a grant proposal for the park of the future!

28 Martin: What a great idea! Maybe we can start by convincing Halley to let more people in.

29 Halley: Under one condition. 30 Catherine: Now what, Halley?31 Halley: If you call our future park Halleyville, everyone is welcome!32 Martin: Oh, Halley...

Discussion question: Is there a park in your community? If so, what would you modify to make the park more enjoyable and accessible to all?

Characters’ Perspectives

Day 2

Can we create a better society?Alyse, Halley, Martin, and Catherine

Alyse thinks that:

Rules and regulations are necessary to keep public spaces clean and safe.

Utopias, or ideal communities, are impossible to create.

Universal design principles should only be used on buses.

Halley thinks that:

People are mostly selfish and look out for themselves.

The basketball courts and swings are in good condition.

People are generally good and will do the right thing.

Martin thinks that:

His grandmother should move to their neighborhood so he doesn’t have to leave his friends.

People are able to share and make sacrifices for others.

The park he and his friends are designing should be called Nana’s Park in honor of his grandmother.

Catherine thinks that:

There should be a park for kids and a park for people over 18 years of age.

People are generally selfish and will not care for any park no matter how beautiful or accessible.

People need to be involved in decision-making in order for projects to be successful.

Which character’s perspective do you agree with? Why?

“Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” is a famous phrase from our nation’s Declaration of Independence. It is called a tripartite motto. Tri- means three and partite- means part. Many other nations also have tripartite mottos. Here are some examples:

France: “Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité” (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity)Germany: “Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit” (Unity and Justice and Freedom)Canada: “Peace, Order, and Good Government”

Many young people have collections of items: Coins and toys are popular choices. Charlotte Lee from California has been collecting rubber ducks since 1996. As of 2011, she had accumulated 5,631 different rubber ducks.Brett Martin from Colorado collects items related to video games, including figurines, posters, and clothing. Since 1989 Brett has accumulated 8,030 unique items.

Quote from NBA All-Star LeBron James: “Commitment is a big part of what I am and what I believe. How committed are you to winning? How committed are you to being a good friend? To being trustworthy? To being successful? How committed are you to being a good father, a good teammate, a good role model? There's that moment every morning when you look in the mirror: Are you committed, or are you not?”

The U.S. Congress is made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives. Each state chooses two senators, but the number of representatives depends on the state’s population. Some states with small populations, like Alaska, Montana, and Delaware, choose only one representative to represent them in the House of Representatives. California, however, has the largest population of any state and chooses 53 representatives. How many representatives does your state choose?

Day 4

Betsy’s Journal

Westport, 1811

Dear Journal,

Today was simply a wonderful day in the life of a teacher. I feel as though the great writer Rousseau would be proud of me. I am slightly modifying his words, but I think the spirit is there: “The noblest work in education is to make a reasoning man." Well, Journal, my students have all successfully learned to read, write, and reason! These years have been the most gratifying of my life. Five years ago, I never would have imagined that I would be a teacher in beautiful Westport teaching Negro, white, and Native children — in the same classroom, no less! Rousseau also wrote: “He who believes himself the master of others does not escape being more of a slave than they.” Which brought Master John to mind…

I never wrote much of Master John because I so loathed to even name him. And when he died five years ago after a drunken fall down the stairs, none of us shed a tear. He was cruel and selfish — unlike Mistress, who is so good to all. Mistress also never shed a tear for her husband, and according to Mother, she still hasn’t. In fact, she never mentions him. Mistress set us all free against his wishes. Mother and Father are still with her and she pays them well for their assistance.

But Journal, I want to tell you how it was I arrived to this utopia! It was because of you, dear Journal! A man saw me writing in my journal on a park bench in the port of Providence where he had just descended from a whaling ship. He said seeing me write with such focus reminded him of documenting his travels around the world in his mariner journals. I told him of Hester’s journal and my mother Grace’s journal and how both had led to my own. I explained that Mistress had secretly taught my mother to read from the journal of her great-great-great-great-great-grandmother Hester, and my mother, in turn, secretly taught me with Mistress’ encouragement.

Betsy’s Journal continues on the next page.

Day 4

And so it was that I met Mr. Paul Cuffee who became my brilliant mentor. Can you imagine, Journal, that he is the richest Negro in all these United States? He founded the integrated school in Westport after his own free, mixed-race children were denied regular education with white children. The lesson he has taught me, Journal, is that it does not matter how much money you have — people will still treat you badly and undermine you because of the color of your skin. And because he did not want his children to be educated as second-class citizens, he pursued his own dream — to build an integrated school, which he did on his own property.

And now I am a teacher of free children! Even so, slavery is still alive and well. It is said that the slave trade is only a southern problem, but even Rhode Island is still very committed to this inhuman trade.

Mr. Cuffee has grown tired of being a second-class citizen in his own country and has begun working on his hope for another kind of utopia — to relocate families to Africa, to the nation of Sierra Leone. He believes that these families can create a new community in this new land where race is not an obstacle to the pursuit of making money and getting an education.

Mr. Cuffee has invited us to join him on the journey, but we feel it is best to stay here and carry on his work. I have a wonderful husband, Henry, who is also a teacher here, and two healthy, beautiful children named Grace and Paul. Grace is named for my mother and Paul after our mentor. We live close enough to Mother and Father that we can visit often. My world is good, Journal, and I am thankful for all that I have. And thankful for you, dear Journal, for bringing me to this utopian place!

Gratefully yours,

Betsy

Day 5

The Wealthiest Man of Color in the United States

Paul Cuffee was lucky to be born a free man in 1759 on Cuttyhunk Island, Massachusetts. His mother was a member of the Wampanoag tribe, and his father was from Ghana, Africa and was formerly enslaved. When Paul was 13, his father died, and he and his older brother became responsible for supporting the family.

In order to provide for his family financially, Paul joined his first whaling ship at the age of 16. He successfully completed two voyages, but on the third he was captured by the British and imprisoned for three months during the Revolutionary War. The British released him, and he returned home in 1776. He worked on the family farm until he decided he needed a new pursuit to make more money. At the age of 20, he built his own small boat and tried to take supplies to sell to Nantucket, an island off of the coast of Massachusetts. Pirates repeatedly attacked Cuffee, undermining his efforts. But he had made a commitment to becoming the master of his own fate and continued to build more boats by hand. Finally, he was successful and began to make money.

As Cuffee began accumulating money, the state of Massachusetts demanded that he pay personal taxes. Although he was free, Cuffee did not have the right to vote because of the color of his skin. He and his brother sued the state, explaining that if they had to pay taxes, then they should have the right to vote. Essentially, Cuffee used the concept of “no taxation without representation,” which was the same battle cry that started the Revolutionary War. Cuffee had many supporters in the legislature who agreed, but not enough to modify the law. Three years later, however, the Massachusetts legislature declared that any man who owned land, regardless of color, had the right to vote and be represented in the government.

Cuffee had little formal schooling, so he committed himself to learning to read and write, as well as learning the science behind navigation. He grew into a well-respected seaman who owned a number of ships. He became the wealthiest African American of his time. With his money, he pursued his commitment to his community by investing in a variety of projects. In 1799, he built a schoolhouse on his land and declared that anyone who wanted to attend the school could do so. It was the first integrated school in the United States where children of all colors could attend together and be treated equally.

Slavery was still strong in the South and many free black people were not given the same opportunities as whites, but Cuffee was determined to help his people. He learned about a British colony in Africa called Sierra Leone where they had relocated many people who had been freed from slavery in America. Cuffee journeyed to England and then to the colony of Sierra Leone to investigate this possible utopia. After his trip, Cuffee pursued his commitment to finding a place for people of color where they could be full citizens and have more economic opportunities. In 1816, he helped relocate 38 people to the colony and provided them with provisions for a year.

On September 9, 1817, a year after his journey, Paul Cuffee died, leaving behind a legacy of equality, determination, and belief in community.

Attention Word Generation Students:

We believe that all young people should spend their summers in a healthy and positive community. To show our commitment to this idea, the Future Communities Foundation is offering funding to young designers to create universally designed (UD) summer camp communities. Using what you have learned about community from the previous units, you will compete with others to design a community that would be appreciated by designers and experts.

You will have time to work in groups to accumulate all sorts of ideas—this is called “brainstorming.” After the brainstorm, you will select and integrate the best ideas. Then representatives of your team will present the design of your summer camp community to the class.

Responding to Interview Questions

Better Communities Magazine would like to interview you about your team’s process of designing an ideal camp community. Using the knowledge that you have accumulated about community design, write a response that addresses the following questions.

What were your biggest successes? What were your biggest challenges?

Did you focus more on creating happy experiences or on preventing people from harming others?

What was the biggest lesson you learned about planning a community?

Remember to use examples to support your ideas. Include focus words to make your writing more compelling.
