3 Work together. Find words in the text that mean:

a a serious illness ____________b a space with flowers and fountains ________________c controlling water on the ground to help farming ________________d place of worship for Muslims ________________e improvement ________________f a person who thinks of a machine or device for the first time ________________g not as expensive ________________

2 Student A reads paragraphs 1, 3 and 5. Student B reads paragraphs 1, 2 and 4.Then ask each other what these words refer to.

1 Do you recognize these words: alcohol, sugar, syrup, jacket, sofa? They all come from Arab words. There are many things in modern culture all around the world that originally came from the Arabicsocieties of a thousand years ago.

2 A long time before European doctors knew about medicine and disease, Muslim doctors knew whatcaused many diseases and how to control them. Mecca, Medina, Cairo and other great Muslim citiesall had hospitals with large gardens.

3 The Arabs borrowed their numerical system from ancient India. When they did so, they called thenumber 0 al-sifr. This means nothing or empty. The Arabic word was Latinized as zero. Algebra comesfrom Arabic word al-jabr which means changing a complicated set of numbers into a simplerlanguage of symbols. This knowledge of mathematics was used by the Muslims to explore the seasand the stars: Sindbad was a real sailor who made voyages to China, Japan and Indonesia. All thishappened many years before the European voyages of discovery.

4 While the Muslims were ruling in Spain there was great progress in science, arts, agriculture, andother products of civilization. The Muslims brought ideas like water irrigation—very important in hotcountries — and the use of the waterwheel to create power. Ibn-e-farnas was a Muslim scientist andinventor living in Spain. Around 800 AD he designed a flying machine—700 years before Leonardoda Vinci’s ideas. The Mosque in Cordoba is one of the few remaining buildings that shows theincredible architecture and design of the ancient mosques all over the Muslim world.

5 Many people know that paper was invented in China, but not that paper was made of silk. It was theMuslims who changed silk for cotton, which was much cheaper and easier to use. It was this inventionthat allowed printing to develop in Europe. The Renaissance—one of the most important periods inEuropean history and learning—was possible only because of paper and printing.

11.5 Culture

Every October, Guanajuato is host to the International Cervantino Festival, named in honor ofMiguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote. Artists from around the world perform in recitals, concerts, plays, ballet, modern dance, opera and art exhibits. Some events take place in the JuarezTheater which faces the main square called Union Plaza. Every inch of the interior of the theaterbuilt in 1903, is carved, painted, sculpted or embossed. Guanajuato is a picturesque colonial city nestled in the mountains of Mexico. Its name originatesfrom the word Quanax-juato which, in the indigenous dialect of the region, meant "Place of Frogs".On the outskirts is the Valenciana silver mine, started by the Spaniards in 1558. For 250 years itproduced much of the world’s silver. The great architecture of this gorgeous city was built with theenormous wealth generated from the silver mines. In 1989, Guanajuato was named as a WorldHeritage Site by UNESCO.To get around during the festival, it is best to walk. There are plazas and winding, hilly cobblestonestreets and alleys called callejones. The most famous is the Callejón del Beso. It is so narrow thatlovers, each standing on a balcony of either side of the alley, can reach across and kiss. One of the highlights of the Cervantino Festival is the nightly callejoneada. Estudiantinas, studentchoral groups from the university, walk through the streets and alleys playing guitars andserenading the people.

St. Bernard dogs to the rescue

a _____________________________________Around 1050 AD, St. Bernard of Montjou established a monastery high in the Swiss Alps, and theSt. Bernard Pass in the valley below was a popular route for travelers and traders. These traderswere the first to bring dogs to the St. Bernard Monastery in 1125. It was around 1600 that themonks started using their dogs to rescue people who were lost or trapped by avalanches. The dogswere given their name in 1880.

b _____________________________________ St. Bernards are strong, large dogs. They have a wide back and a long heavy tail. There are twokinds of St. Bernard dogs—one with long hair and the other with short hair. But both have thickcoats that are red, white and brown. St. Bernards have a large head, a big mouth and a very strongsense of smell.

c _____________________________________ St. Bernards are gentle and calm dogs. They are also loving and caring and really enjoy being withpeople and helping them. They are working dogs—they require plenty of exercise and do not likehot weather. They are large dogs for modern homes, but they are good watchdogs. For the rightfamily, they can make a wonderful pet.

d _____________________________________ The mother of St. Bernard puppies is pregnant for about seven to nine weeks. After they are born, the puppies cannot hear or open their eyes for about fourteen days. After four weeks, they canmove and play with the other puppies. When the puppies are six weeks old, they get their firstteeth. It is important to train them at a young age. They usually live between seven and elevenyears.

a Name three different groups of people that volunteers work with. _____________________________b What is a shield? _________________________________________________________________________c What is a Human Shield? __________________________________________________________________d Where do most Human Shields come from? __________________________________________________e What kinds of places do they protect? _______________________________________________________f What do they belive? _______________________________________________________________________

A new kind of volunteer

Many people are volunteers: they work with rescue services, refugees, AIDS victims, children and old people. But a new kind of volunteer has recently developed: the Human Shield. A shieldwas traditionally used by soldiers and warriors to cover their bodyunder attack. The Human Shield uses his/her own body to protectinnocent civilians from attack. There is a worldwide movement of people who are prepared to put themselves in danger toprotect other people.

The majority of these Shields are from First World countries. They believe that governments will beless likely to drop bombs on locations where they risk killing their own citizens. The locations chosenby the Human Shields are those where the civilian population is most at risk: schools and hospitals, etc.

Some people accuse the Shields of helping the “enemy.” In the war in ex-Yugoslavia, the President of the country tried to use the Shields to protect strategic places: bridges, army camps and electricityplants. However, the mission of the Shields is very clear—they are there only to save the lives of innocent people. The Human Shield movements do not support dictators. They believe war is bad and the people who really suffer are the civilians.

At the beginning of the Iraqi war many Shields traveled to Iraq to help the Iraqi people. The volunteers were from all different areas of life: nurses, students, diplomats and ex-soldiers.

They were normal people, with normal lives, no heroes or heroines, just people who wanted to helpothers.

The Shields admitted that they were frightened, but they believed that peace is better than bombsand killing.

2 Read the text again. What do the Haman Shields try to do?

Be heroes Help dictators Save lives

3 In pairs, ask and answer these questions.

a Are you a volunteer? _______________________________b Would you give up your free time to help others? _______________________________c Why or Why not? _______________________________d What kind of people do you think Human Shields are? _______________________________e Are they brave or stupid? _______________________________f Do you think they do a good job? _______________________________

1 Read the text and put the events in the right order.

1818 Mary Ann Todd is born in Lexington, Kentucky. Her father is a senator and a businessman.

1824 Mary’s mother dies while giving birth to her seventh child.1825 Mary’s father marries again. This marriage gives Mary nine more brothers and sisters.

There are also many slaves in the house, which may be why Mary is always against slavery.1826 Mary begins her studies at Shelby Female Academy in her home town. It is not usual for

women to be educated in those days, but Mary studies until she is twenty-one.1839 While she is living with one of her sisters, she meets Abraham Lincoln at a dance.

They fall in love and get engaged.1842 After some help from friends, they get married on November 4th.

The inscription on her wedding ring is “Love Is Eternal”. 1846 The family moves to Washington, DC when Lincoln is elected

to the American government.1850 Their second son, Edward, dies aged three. Mary is deeply affected by his death.1855 Lincoln loses his first election to be President. 1858 Lincoln loses another election but Mary is more convinced than ever

that he can be President.1860 Lincoln is elected President of the United States—with a lot of help from his wife.

Even his beard is probably her idea, to make him more attractive!1862 Another son dies of fever. Even though Mary has many family problems,

she still works hard to help the slaves.1865 Five days after the end of the American Civil War, Lincoln is shot and killed at a theater.

Mary never really recovers from this tragedy. 1882 Mary dies, still wearing her wedding ring.

2 Before you read the text, try to answer these questions: who was Alfred Nobel andwhy is he famous?

Alfred Nobel was born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden. He was a scientist, an inventor and a businessman. He is most famous for two things — heinvented dynamite and he established the Nobel Prizes.

Each year the Nobel Foundation Committee, a group of experts in Sweden, decides which people have done the most for humanity in five areas: physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace. The prize is a medal, a personaldiploma and an amount of money. The awards are given by the King ofSweden in a very elegant and traditional ceremony in Stockholm every yearin December. But the most important part of the prize is just winning it.

Alfred Nobel’s early life was not easy. His father lost a lot of money inbusiness, and they were separated for over five years. His father was workingin Russia, and Alfred stayed in Sweden with his mother and brothers.

In 1850, Nobel began his travels. First he went to Paris, then to Italy,Germany and the USA. After ten years of traveling, he started his experimentswith explosives. He followed in his father’s steps and went into engineeringand building. He was looking for a substance that would be useful, but therewere many problems. In 1864, Nobel's brother, Emil, was killed during anexperiment. Experimenting on a boat on the River Elbe, Nobel tried to makenitro-glycerine safer to handle. He finally mixed it with a kind of sand, whichcould be made into any shape. He had discovered dynamite.

In his last will and testament, Nobel wrote that much of his fortune was to be used to give prizes to those who have done their best for humanity. The first prizes were not awarded until 1901 because Nobel’s family did notagree with the will. Since then, over seven hundred people have won theawards. Some names you might recognize are Nelson Mandela, AlbertEinstein and Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Marie Curie, the French scientist, is special because only four people have won the Nobel Prize twice—andshe is the only woman who has ever done so!

1 Match the headings to their paragraphs.

1 Modern science has found answers for many of the world’sproblems but a lot of people these days prefer to use alternativemedicine instead of drugs to help cure their illnesses. Manyalternative therapies come from Eastern cultures such as Chinaand India and are thousands of years old. There are varioustypes—some include actual medicines and others use physicalor mental techniques.

2 There are therapies, like Chi Kung, that involve the use ofenergy fields but the existence of such fields is not accepted as ascientific fact. Chi Kung and Tai Chi are part of traditionalChinese medicine that combines movement, meditation, andbreathing exercises to help the flow of chi—the vital energy inthe body. Acupuncture is also from the East and is the practiceof releasing energy around the body by using tiny needles in oneof five hundred special points on the skin.

3 Homeopathic medicine is based on the belief that “like cureslike.” It uses small, highly-diluted quantities of naturalsubstances—which would harm the patient if given in higher quantities. Instead, in these smallquantities, it cures by stimulating the body’s defence systems. Other therapies use substances found innature, such as herbs, foods, and vitamins but some of them are still unproven—for example, using sharkcartilage to treat cancer.

4 Lots of people prefer aromatherapy, which means using the smells from all sorts of different natural productsto create a healthy and healing atmosphere. They say it is extremely relaxing, like massage. Others do yoga, which they say is very good for them because it reduces stress and allows the body to heal itself.

BOBBY: … I know what you mean, but things are definitely better for women generally these days, aren’t they? (a) ________

D: Yes, that’s true. Did you know that when my grandmother was a little girl, most womenstayed at home looking after children? (b) ________

but the rest of the time, why shouldn’t they? (j) ________S: In the past there were some cultures in Greece and South America and India where the

women were more powerful … (k) ________B: Yes, and in many places today the women do all the work … because the men are so lazy

and stay at home talking about soccer! (l) ________D: Men’s soccer or women’s soccer ... ? Ha-ha-ha ...
