How it all began
Childhood Obesity in Houston 27% of fourth graders are obese (BMI>95%) 19% are overweight (BMI>85% to <95%) 2 million Houston residents: 49% Anglo, 37%
Hispanic, 25% African American, 5% Asian Minority communities greater risk of
childhood obesity, heart disease, stroke, asthma, type 2 diabetes, depression, cancer
More fast food restaurants Only 6 acres of park/1000 residents Approximately 30% uninsured
What is CAN DO Houston? Holistic community-based program
to prevent and diminish childhood obesity
Target group is children 0 – 12 years of age and their caregivers
Recognition that our mission will require a multi-dimensional approach
Programs will be delivered in schools, after-school, worksites, community centers, recreation parks, faith community, and home environments
We must address physical activity, nutrition and healthy minds
CAN DO is About Mobilizing & Coordinating Existing Resources that….. Provide parents the knowledge, skills and
commitment opportunities to improve daily wellness choices (nutrition, physical activity, relaxation/coping skills, etc) at home
Partnering with City Police to ensure neighborhood parks are safe
Support the wellness learning that teachers, health/physical educators and coaches are providing to children at school through promotion and delivery of wellness throughout the community
Build worksite wellness programs to ensure parents are taking wellness concepts home

1. Create local communities as a destination for healthy living – building a healthy, viable community
• IDENTIFY communities-in-need who embrace the CAN DO Houston mission (WHO)
• Health measure improvements (TBD)
2. Build initiatives from the inside out, cultivating engagement and sustainability
• LISTEN to the needs of the community and BUILD on the strengths of the community (WHAT)
• Participation rates in the programming (i.e. kids and parents)
3. Catalyze collaboration with existing resources, businesses, and local community partners
• Serve as a coordinating center for local initiatives and services that promote healthy living (HOW)
• Partner with METRO, Police, Parks and Recreation, Houston Independent School District, Health and Human Services and other community organizations to help Houstonians have better access to a healthy lifestyle
• Disseminate evidence-based and sustainable practices
• Participation rates among partners
• Participation rates among community representatives (i.e. PIP, Parks & Rec, volunteers)
