Description

The red cross motherless babies home consists of an administrative block, a home for the children and a school.

The home houses about 30 children The school’s attendance is not

restricted to the home, hence children from the neighborhood attend the school.

Project Description

Volunteers are to conduct after school lessons and help the children with their homework.

To assist the caretakers in carrying out basic tasks. Eg feeding, changing diapers etc

Specific challenges of the home which we intend to assist in solving are:

phasing the of-age children from primary school into nearby secondary schools

Assisting with adoption processes Organising celebrations to mark holidays

Aims and Objectives

To assist the children academically Fostering of mentoring relationships

which will provide the children with role models

Assisting the over-worked staff by taking over simple tasks such as feeding the children, playing with them etc

Project Outcome

Well developed children (psychologically, emotionally, physically) who are fully equipped to succeed in today’s world.

A mentoring relationship between the volunteers and the children which will provide the children with role models

Sorting out challenges of the home as afore-mentioned such as adoption and phasing children out of the primary school into the secondary school.

S.W.O.T ANALYSIS

Strengths:• Interested students willing to volunteer their time• Financial aid from sponsors can be used to provide teaching aids•Youthful vigour in our approach to teaching children and preteens.

Weaknesses:•Holidays ( volunteers living in distant areas)•Our youthful appearance may not command respect from the children.•Unserious attitude towards commitment in many youths.

Opportunities:•Interaction with the children can have positive influence on the volunteers.•A heightened maturity, an effect from being responsible for persons other than yourself•Rewards at the C2C Gala Nite for dedication to the project.

Threats:•Likelihood of strike•Poor reception due to a lack of professional training in teaching children.•Means and cost of transportation to the venue.

Volunteers

20 volunteers are required for this project, with a set of 4 going each day of the week.

There are about 30 children in the home so there is a ratio of 1volunteer to 7-8 children daily.(1:7.5)

Volunteers put in two hours a week in this project. There is an application form to be filled before volunteers

can be selected. Volunteers are to arrive before 4pm on their designated

days and immediately check in with the holder of the register at the home.

Volunteers are also to tick the register with the project coordinator after putting in their volunteer hours.

Volunteers who are absent thrice in a row will be removed out of the project.

The children are available for after school lessons between 4pm and 6pm from mondays to fridays.

Application Process

The application form is to be filled by prospective volunteers.

One passport photograph is to be submitted along with the filled application form.

The passport photograph will be used in the creation of C2C identification cards, which will be displayed to security or authorized personnel before carrying out volunteer-duties..

Not all applicants may be selected but there will be a back up list from which undedicated volunteers will be replaced.

Rewards

There will be recognition for consistency, creativity in handling the children and all other notable attributes of the volunteers

Exceptional children in behavior and academics will be recognised.

Recognitions shall take place at programs organised by the C2C.

Stakeholders

Orphaned and abandoned children. Overworked staff will receive

assistance. Volunteers who have dedicated their

time to the project.

Requirements

All interested volunteers should familiarize themselves with children learning aids such as queen premier, coloring books, storybooks, textbooks etc.

Teaching aids such as packets of chalk, pencils, paper and even sweets that will serve as rewards for the kids are required.

Timeline

DATE ACTIVITY November 8 2013 - February 25 2014 Develop syllabus and lesson plans for the continuous teaching program for the volunteers for

both first and second semester. March 3 2014 – June 1 2014 Volunteers start teaching from the syllabus and incorporate lesson plans into daily routine. Commence mentoring program. June 1 2014 End of semester program meeting. JUNE 28 2014 – JULY 18 2014 Review syllabus and lesson plans for the continuous teaching program for the volunteers for

second semester. Distribute syllabus and lesson plans to volunteers. Review first semester performance and make improvements. July 21 2014 – October 10 2014 Volunteers start teaching from the syllabus and incorporate lesson plans into daily routine. Commence mentoring program. October 10 2014 End of semester program meeting. November 7 2014 – January 5 2014 Prepare and submit annual report of activities to partners and stakeholders.
