Over the past year, students in

Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 have

participated in the Duke of

Edinburgh Award scheme.

There are three levels of the Award

- bronze, silver and gold. Each

with varying levels of commitment, volunteering and expeditions.

Students that participated have learnt many new skills, volunteered

within the community, taken part in physical exercise and planned

and completed a series of expeditions—first practise then the

qualifying.

Regardless of some of the dreadful weather we have had recently,

they have all done really well and passed with flying colours;

camping, navigating and cooking within their teams and with remote

supervision by their supervisors (teachers).

We would also like to wish the Gold students the best of luck, as

they are completing their qualifying expedition—just as Campus

Times went to press - in Snowdonia, North Wales.

ART & PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION 2012

The recent Art & Photography Exhibition was our biggest & best show

so far, with the largest turnout of visitors we've had at Barnwell.

Students’ work was big and bold; there were canvases 6 foot tall, some

graffiti'ed in spray paint, some covered with chocolate; a dress made

from tea bags and large scale portraits to be proud of.

There were some very professional and haunting projections of moving

imagery; beautiful photography some even framed with animal skulls.

Many of the exhibitions' visitors were heard to say " I would have that on

my wall". We are very proud of our students. Well done to everybody.

Breaking News….

Hatred, treachery and anguish amidst the dark and sinister back

streets of 16th century Venice shocks and engages us still today!

10EngRJ have recently completed a demanding and in-depth

study of Shakespeare’s play ‘The Merchant of Venice’. In this

troubled and tragic story of Shylock (a money lender reviled and

abused by his neighbours) emotions and ideas still relevant today

grabbed 10EngRJ’s imagination and stretched their thinking

powers. Notions of anti-Semitism, prejudice, fairness, justice and

revenge were fiercely debated. Speeches were read repeatedly

until the beauty of Shakespeare’s language became magically

alive.

This long unit of work was pulled together when students wrote their

own front page of The Shakespeare Chronicle to demonstrate their

understanding of the play and Shakespeare’s verse. The work produced was outstanding. The

very best work was achieved by the joint efforts of Sarah Chambers and Chloe Jenkinson whose

full page spread was articulate, analytic and empathetic – journalists of the future perhaps!

Students were able to use this work to inform their Controlled Assessment for GCSE which

required an in-depth study of Shakespeare’s presentation of Shylock’s character.

Mrs.Jewitt appreciates all the hard work put in by the class and commented, ‘It was the best

teaching and learning I’ve experienced for quite a while.’

So well done 10EngRJ – don’t forget to show the work to your parents!

Budding Novelists

7C2 have been writing

their own mini-novels

this term and they are

incredible! Stories

about lone assassins,

fugitive soldiers,

haunted houses, she-

devils and zombie

dogs amongst others have shown

real skill, determination and

perseverance. They are all

imaginative, interesting,

entertaining and have been a

pleasure to read...they are on

display for anyone who would like

to come and have a read of our

future JK Rowling's and Dan

Brown's. Well done 7C2!

Sixth Form students work extremely

hard throughout their time at

school. But the Annual Sixth Form

Ball gives them the

chance to let their

hair down.

This year, the ball

was held at Chesfield

Downs Golf &

Country Club which

the students and

staff enjoyed very

much. 4

On Monday 3rd July Barnwell hosted its New

Intake Evening where we welcomed the Year 6

students, along with their parents, who will be

joining us in September.

On arrival, the students were taken to the

leisure centre and the Parents were directed into

the Hall.

The students were registered by our School

Ambassadors and informed of their House and

Form. They then met their new Head of House,

Form Tutor and completed some ice breaker

activities in their new form groups.

The Parents were welcomed by our Acting Head

Teacher, Mr Fitzpatrick and then informed of

some general school organisation and

expectations by Mr Patching and Mrs Anderson.

The Parents were entertained throughout the

evening by our 2012 ‘Barnwell’s Got Talent’

Winner Georgia Barnes who sang and played the

piano, followed by Lauren Thorn and Karina

Redmond who sang a beautiful duet. The

evening was concluded by the incredible ‘Rock

Challenge’ team who presented their award

winning ‘In the Game’ performance.

Many thanks to all those students and staff who

gave up their time to perform and help out at

the New Intake Evening, including a special

mention to all the Key Stage 3 Ambassadors

who worked tirelessly through the night.

We really look forward to welcoming our new

Year 7 cohort of students in September.

Mr Patching

New Intake Evening

On Tuesday 3rd July, 90 Barnwell Sixth Form

students joined thousands of Year 12 students, in their first year of advanced level courses from across the County, to attend the Higher Educa-tion Convention held at the University of Hertfordshire.

The Convention brings together universities and colleges within the UCAS scheme to inform and guide prospective university and college stu-dents. The event plays a vital part in helping our year 12 students decide what and where to study within higher education.

Our students were able to visit 3 exhibitions ar-eas with over 143 stands and speak to different organisations including around 110 higher educations institutions. Exhibitors also included further education colleges, Connexions, GAP Year organisations, professional bodies, student travel firms and student finance. Presentations and seminars ran throughout the day where students could learn, in more detail, about spe-cific courses.

The year 12 students thoroughly enjoyed the day and gained valuable information. Students’ arms were full with University prospectuses as

Gold, Silver and Bronze KS3 Reward Certificates Throughout this academic year I have been monitoring the progress of all students in Key Stage 3 in terms of the amount of their end of year subject targets they have achieved or exceeded. I have great pleasure in informing you that a large amount of our students have been hugely successful this year. As means of celebrating this, and in line with the London Olympic theme, I have sent home Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates to those students who have reached at least 75% of their end of year targets:

‘Bronze’ certificates = 75% - 84% of end of year subject targets reached/exceeded

‘Silver’ certificates = 85% - 94% of end of year subject targets reached/exceeded

‘Gold’ Certificates = 95% - 99% of end of year subject targets reached/exceeded

‘Platinum’ Certificates = 100% of end of year subject targets reached/exceeded

Over 140 students earned and therefore received certificates this year so huge congratulations to those

students and I hope to see even more students achieving certificates next year. Mr Patching

Excellence as Standard!

Aspire’ was a new Key Stage 3 ‘Rewarding Achievement’ team competition where the aim was, for each team, to earn as many points as possible with the overall objective to win the ‘Aspire League’ at the end of the academic year.

Students could earn points by hitting their target grade in each subject following each of the four data tracks through the year including: 1 extra point for every sub-level achieved above target in a subject, 1 point is available for a B4L average score below 2 and 1 point available for 95%+ Attendance.

On Thursday 14th June the Barnwell business team (Mia Bloomquest, Connor Hemmings, Tillee Waite, Daniel Poolman and Alice Mitchell) set off to take part in a business competition at the business and technology centre in the industrial area. Upon arriving, the five of us were greeted and then went into a conference room where there were five other schools. Our first task was to use spaghetti pasta and a few pieces of string and make the tallest structure possible that could withstand the weight of a ball. Amazingly our group won with our tower only being about 30cm tall. For the main business challenge we had to choose from a few different categories and create a business. We chose fitness and then created ‘Junior Gym’- a gym for 12-17 year olds. It was

Business Team Work a Win split into 10 different rounds which were ten minutes each and you were rewarded a possible £5000 for each round. We had to create a USP, think about start-up costs, create promotional techniques, design the ideal candidate for the job and focus on a target audience. There was stiff competition especially after the presentation stage but Barnwell won and we all got a box of maltesers. We were against five other schools in Stevenage; Marriots, Thomas Alleyne, Nobel, John Henry Newman and Barclay. Overall it was a very enjoyable day and was a good opportunity for us to represent our school and was an added bonus to win. With an expected visit from the Duke of Edinburgh cancelled it was a shame for him to not see everyone’s great ideas but we wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him at a later rearranged date. Alice Mitchell

As you can see from the display, we started our

year looking at the world. We have also covered

castles where we made our own, Harry Potter

when Miss Ellinger brought in Bertie Bott's

every flavour bean, The Fire of London where

we played games on the interactive whiteboard

and chocolate and where it comes from. That

was fun - we got to taste lots of different types

of chocolate. We have also looked at crime

rates, different cultures and lots more. We have

covered lots more topics - too many to mention

but we are definitely cleverer than when we first

came to Barnwell! 7A4

7A4's Fun Year

Our Year 9 STEM (Science,

Technology, Engineering and

Mathematics) day started with an

introduction from John Grover,

from the Smallpeice Foundation. He explained about

the foundation and said we were going to learn how

engineering affects us in our day to day life.

We took part in many activities such as building

towers out of paper and the we got onto the main

project of making a wind turbine.

Using paper, plastic and sellotape we built our model

which was to be tested to see how much energy could

be created.

Group 1 were the winning team consisting of: Martha

Huggins, Tiga-Ebony Abbey, Liam Bayford and

Jacques Guinebolt. The day ended with short pres-

entations and certifi-

cates for every-

one.

All in all, it was a

very enjoyable day

that everyone took

part in. A big thank

you to the teachers

that helped arrange

the event.

The whole school recently took part in an Olympic Theme Week with the focus to educate about past, present and future Olympic Games and to celebrate the London Olympics.

Every subject in school delivered lessons with an Olympic theme. Some of the topics included;

Creating flags, mascots, posters and new National Anthems, writing newspaper articles, diary entries and poems, timelines and political protests, role play, cultural sport and dance, analysing the bodies response to exercise, languages of the world to name but a few.

All students took part in a 'Mini Olympics' in their PE lesson. Students had to perform a run, jump and throw and take part in a game of American baseball. Points were awarded for each event for effort and performance. Each student achieved either a Bronze, Silver or Gold medal.

Tofunmi Ifarajimi was the highest point scorer, he received a prestigious reward of a VIP lunch, Olym-pic T-shirt and photograph taken with the Olympic torch on Sunday 8th July.

Other students will receive their trophies and medals in the celebration assemblies on the last day of term. We would like to say thank you to staff in school for your support and enthusiasm in delivering Olympic Theme Week. We would also like to thank our amazing students for your hard work and effort throughout the week.

Mrs J Carter, Miss K Hull & Miss S Ward

Year 9 had a great opportunity to go on the

science field trip that takes place every year

for which we had been preparing for weeks

in our lessons.

We went to Ridings Woods and had to take

part in many activities throughout the course

of the day. Our group started off by the brook

where we checked for many creatures and

plants living there.

We were put in to groups and had to do many

samples of the parts of this area of land.

Many of us enjoyed looking for wildlife as

we could then begin to get an idea of what

other creatures we would find in this area.

After that morning, we began to look at the

sizes of the trees in that surrounding area.

With the information we gathered we could

then see how old the trees were, therefore

seeing how

old the woods

are.

Later on in

the day we

measured the

temperature,

sound and

light in the

different parts

of the woods.

We had to

think about the impact humans have in the woods and

how this may affect the animals.

This opportunity gave us a chance to apply our skills we

have learnt in lessons outside of school. Thank you to all

the staff that supported us on the field trip.

If You Go Down To the Woods Today….You Are Likely To Meet Our Students!!

Year 9 students taking Art in Year 10 were recently

taken to the ‘Tate Modern’ Gallery in London.

When we arrived we were all assigned our groups

and given a small sketchbook in which to make

notes. The groups went round looking at the artwork

and trying to “read“ a different message from the

pieces.

There was much diversity amongst the pieces in the

gallery ranging from oil paintings and cast models

to structures made from metal and neon light tub-

ing. Some used very little colour but used many

shades and tones within the scale.

The ‘Diamond Skull’ created by

Damien Hurst was very

inspirational. This piece showed

the richness of death and sent

out a mixed message. The

meaning of the ‘Diamonds’ in

the skull convey a message of

wealth and happiness, whereas the meaning of the

skull represents death and loneliness. The grim and

unhappy thoughts of death and the way in which it

can happen cant compare to the endless

enrichment of ‘Diamonds’.

Overall I thought that all the artwork was creative

and imaginative in their own ways as well as being

incredibly diverse.

The science department have won a

prestigious Platinum Green Tree Award

from the Woodland Trust to recognise

their continued dedication to ecological

studies and ecological field work.

We are one of the few schools that still offer

ecology trips for KS3 and a residential ecology

trip for Y12 biology students.

Barnwell are the first secondary school to be

awarded the Platinum award so this is a great

achievement for the school. 8

Over the last year Barnwell students have been using their mathematical knowledge to good effect when facing various challenges out of lessons, as well as those in lessons.

Earlier in the year, 17 students from Year 9 and one from Year 8 entered the UKMT (United Kingdom Mathematics Trust) Intermediate Mathematical Challenge. This resulted in a Gold awards for Jason Malcolm, along with an invitation to take part in the Grey Kangaroo, Silver awards for Rosemary Borcherds, Martha Huggins and Laura Burrows and Bronze for Emma Cain and Daniel Brockwell.

Less than a week later more students were in action, this time in the Hertfordshire County Year 10 Maths Challenge. Alex Byrne, Alice Mitchell, Morgan Price, Charlie Reed and Jack Sampson arrived at school in the evening to answer questions as a team and individually in a series of rounds. The students (and staff) were not familiar with this competition and they equipped themselves well, narrowly missing out on achieving a place in the final at Cambridge University.

March saw Jason Malcolm completing his Grey Kangaroo test. Jason performed well and was a credit to himself, to his parents and to school. Not to be outdone, Years 7 and 8 stepped up to the mark at the end of April for the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge. Year 8 provided 17 candidates and Year 7 provided 25 for their attempt. Gold awards were achieved by Daniel Brockwell, Matthew Lee, Ahmed Mohamed, Manav Babbar,Carys Roberts and Kye Graham and Silver awards by Jacob Wallis, Catherine Kelly and Kaitland Baker . A total of 15 students achieved a Bronze award.

I would like to say well done to all those who took part in the above competitions, whatever score they

achieved. Mr Graham

On Tuesday 3rd July, 50 lucky Year 10 students

were given the opportunity to take part in an

employability day.

The 5 workshops looked at a range of skills

students needed when they were

applying for jobs, college, Sixth form

and University.

Students explored skills an employer

would be looking for when hiring

and asked them to assess the skills

they currently possess and what skills they

needed to develop.

All students completed an

interview (with feedback)

and tasks that employees

would have to complete at places like John

Lewis and Waitrose. At the start of the day,

students were apprehensive about the point of

the day however, by the end , everyone had

taken something from the day and learnt a lot.

Work Related Skills

Three students from Years 8 and 9 formed the

Barnwell team for a local public speaking

competition, 'Stevenage Speaks' on June 25th.

The team had been practising all term to fulfil

their roles in the team and Jack Smith as

Chairperson, Eibhlis O'Malley as the Main

Speaker and Amy Danaher as the Proposer of

the Vote of Thanks did a tremendous job

representing the school.

Jack was humorous and steadfast in his

introductions, Eibhlis was astonishingly

eloquent and confident in her main address

(for 6 long minutes!) and Amy did a fantastic

job taking home the prize for best Proposer in

the seniors competition. Unfortunately, the

team did not secure a win on this occasion but

were superb ambassadors for the school and will

continue to work together and coach next years

team with the hopes of entering the national

'Youth Speaks' competition next year.

All three team members agreed that although

they didn't secure first place, it was an amazing

experience. Mrs Spanyol and Miss Brown

Harry Potter Trip 2012

Students from the Visual Impairment

base recently went on a school trip to

the Harry Potter Studios. Ryan

Fletcher and Billy Joe Skipper had

this to say:

“It was a fantastic day! We saw lots of

props and costumes from the

movie and how they did the

special effects.

We walked up Diagon Alley

and saw the magnificent

castle at the end. It was

almost like being in the film.”

A huge thanks to all the staff

that accompanied the students on the trip.

At the end of Year 9, when we have finished

our exams, Miss Hanna will usually give us a

project to do. Most times, the project is

classroom based but this year was different.

Miss Hanna had been working

with the Year 6’s at Peartree

Primary School and so she

decided that we should get them

involved. So our job was to get

into groups of four, prepare a half

an hour lesson and then teach it

to a group of about six

students.

As it was Olympic

week at Barnwell we

also had to base the

lesson on the

Olympics. At first I

thought this was going

to be really boring and

we probably wouldn’t

even teach the Year 6’s anyway, just plan the

lesson, but as time went on it turned out we

were actually going to teach them so then it

turned into a really exciting thing to do.

When we first got into groups we decided that

we were going to teach them the French

names of some of the different countries that

Student Linguists Teach Primary Pupils By Heather Fossey

compete in the Olympics and some of the colours that

appear on their flags. To teach them the names of the

different countries we decided to go through some of

them with them before letting them play a taboo game

and do an activity where they had to match

the different country labels to the country

flags.

Then to teach them the colours we created a

PowerPoint and a splat game. This was

probably the most enjoyable part of the

lesson for them and for us! All they wanted to

do was to play splat and it was good to

see them enjoying themselves whilst also

learning the colours. You could see them

remembering them better as they went

on and their chosen answer became

quicker and more frequently correct.

Over all the lesson went well and I think

the Year 6’s enjoyed it and learnt

something. At first I thought it was going

to be hard to control

them and they weren’t

going to listen to us but

they were all well be-

haved and it was surpris-

ingly easy to talk and

teach them. It was a

great experience.

Overall I think they

enjoyed the lesson

and we certainly

had fun delivering

it! Although, it

wasn't as easy as

one would think!

Barnwell School is tirelessly proud of the

achievements of its students, be it during

school, an extra curricular event or in their

own time.

We like to openly praise

achievement and hope

that their hard work

inspires many more.

In this edition of Campus

Times, we say a huge “Well

Done” to Georgia Barnes,

who has just passed her

Grade 6 Piano exam with Distinction!

Achievement Outside of School

Page 10: Campus Times 7

We all value our friendships don’t we? The friendships we have are important and our friends are supposed

to be the ones we trust. What happens when we think our friends aren’t being as friendly to others? Just let

them get on with it because they think it’s a joke?

When your friend is calling someone else a name or labelling them, it isn’t right. When you have been bullied

it makes you feel the worse you have ever felt about yourself. How could your own friend - someone you

trust - make someone else feel like that when they’ve seen what you’ve been through?

So what should you do when you’re faced with your friend being unfair to someone? Sit on the sidelines and

watch because they’re your friend? I think you know the answer to that. Letting your friends make someone’s

life a misery isn’t out of your hands.

We need to give advice to our friends…don’t make them feel bad for what they’re doing but help them and try

to make them realise what they’re doing is wrong. A lot of the time bullies don’t know they’re bullies so

we, as their friends, have to sometimes give them guidance and show them what’s right and wrong.

Recently a group of eager netballers visited

PGL Liddington, near Swindon, for the 2012

netball tour.

Two out of three coaches arrived at PGL

around 7:00pm with the third minibus on its

way to Hereford due to Chelsea Digweed and Zoe Buckley's terrible navigation! When the third coach finally arrived we

started the weekend off with some team

building activities. As well as playing a netball

tournament against a number of other

schools, we were also going to take part in

various PGL activities.

The fun started the next

morning with the announcement

that the prestigious “pants

award” would be given to us

throughout the weekend if we did something

silly or a bit crazy!

Students wearing the granny knickers over

the weekend included: Mariah Gunn, Mica Cordingley, Chloe Sampford, Shae Field, Alison Rietzler, Emily Arnold, Abigail Wells, Georgia Sullivan, Charlotte Hewitt and Shayle Carlton. All the teams had a fun and challenging

weekend and we played against some

strong teams. However, we didn’t let this

dampen our sprits and spent our off pitch

time taking part in activities including:

Aero ball, Giant Swing, Vertical Challenge,

Archery and many more.

To finish the weekend we all enjoyed a

slumber party with lots of food music and

some amazing onesies! Huge thanks to all

the staff that joined us.

Jesolo 2012

In June half term we took 39 students to the Venice coast

in Italy as part of a Football Tour.

The boys spent time training with coaches from AC Milan in

preparation for their tournament fixtures against a number of

other schools which were held at the local football stadium in

Jesolo.

Competition was tough, however our boys played

some excellent football and won both Under 13 and Under 15

competitions. There were many standout performances from

the team and the boys chose their own players Player of the Tournament and this is how the voting went:

U13 Champions

1: Jack Kelly 2: Mixon Foo 3: Jordan Clinton

U15 B (3rd Place)

1: Robbie Marshall 2: Joe Smith 3: Mitch Waters

U15 Champions

1: Michael Simpson 2: Ben McMullan 3: Lewis Clayton

The boys were an absolute credit in terms of their performance

and behaviour throughout the tour, and aside from the football

we spent time by the pool, beach and the water park.

The staff gave 2 awards for student of the tour for U13 and U15 and those awards went to Jimmy Agnew

in Year 8 and Harry Volland-Butler in Year 10.

Congratulations to everyone involved, and we look forward to future tours. Mr Tyler

SPORTS ROUND-UP

North Herts District Athletics Championship The end of a rainy June saw Barnwell entering the District Athletics competition and not only did the

rain hold off, Barnwell had its most successful day for many years - winning a total of 24 medals, our

best haul for many Championships!

Many of our students made it through to the finals of their events -after fighting through some tough

heats—but just missed out on a medal.

The students performed magnificently with many school and even district records being broken.

On 19th June, the Year 8 rounder’s team set off for the annual District Rounder’s Tournament.

Our team had set ourselves high expectations deciding that our goal was to at least make the finals! We had fast thinking Natasha Ffinch as backstop, first base was covered by Georgia Barnes, 2nd base by Katie Christ, I was on 3rd base, Shae Field and Patrycja Ciosek rotated on 4th base and 3rd fielder positions. Rebecca Beddall was brilliant as 1st Fielder, Catherine Kelly was a very quick and decisive 2nd fielder and our brilliant bowler was Emma Hayter.

We were faced with playing St Chris’s, Marriots and The Priory so we had a tough battle ahead of us. I had faith that the passion, confidence and co-operation in my team would be what would give us the edge.

The results of our first pool were:

St Christopher’s 1 v 3 Barnwell

Marriots 1/2 v 4 1/2 Barnwell

The Priory 2 v 3 1/2 Barnwell

We had won the heats and we were heading into the semis to face Hitchin Girls School after a very long and technically excellent game, we were lost for words and extremely worried, as none of us were sure whether we had made it through to the finals or not; the game was that close.

The result of this game was: Hitchin Girls 1 v 3 Barnwell We had made it into the finals! All of our hard work and weekly training had paid off, we were through to the finals playing Knights Templar.

The round of play was very

successful for us; catching out 2 players and stumping out at least 3.

Throughout the last innings of the game, excellent play followed from KTS, and when the last ball was

bowled, everybody let out a s i g h o f r e l i e f The umpire called out Barnwell School are the new District Champions. We exploded! We couldn’t stop grinning from ear to ear all week knowing that we were the winners!

We would like to thank our teachers and coaches; especially Miss Ward for he r encou ragemen t ,

confidence in us and excellent leadership throughout this rounders season; and that without you guys, we wouldn’t have made it as far as we have! Thank you, and we hope you have enjoyed this successful season as much as we have!
