Reverend Black Returns as Interim Dean of Student Affairs

Edwards to Deliver SGA Address De’siree Edwards, the 2010-2011 Student Government Association (SGA) Presi-dent, will be the featured speaker during the annual SGA assembly. A native of Florence, SC, Edwards is a senior political science major with a minor in history. Her leadership capabilities have been demonstrated in several organiza-tions including Phi Beta Lambda; the college’s drama club, The Morris College Play-ers; and the Morris College Dance Team. She also serves as a student ambassador. In her thrust for community involvement, she volunteers at the North HOPE Center and with the after-school program at City of Refuge Ministries where she currently attends. Edwards will deliver her SGA address to the campus community in the Neal-Jones Auditorium at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 16.

Groundbreaking Ceremony Scheduled for September 14 A groundbreaking ceremony for a new physical plant building will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Septem-ber 14. Funds for the total cost of construction for this project are part of a $10M gift to the college from Reverend Dr. Solomon Jackson, Jr. earlier this year. The physical plant building will include office spaces, a lawn maintenance equipment area, a staff confer-ence room, storage vaults, workshop areas, and four vehicular bays. The building will be named in honor of the donor’s late father, Mr. Solomon Jackson, Sr.; the late Reverend Dr. William McKinley Bowman, Sr., and Reverend Dr. Raymond Carolina. During the ceremony, the donor will render remarks.

Reverend Eliza E. Black, the highly regarded Dean Emerita of Student Affairs, has returned to Morris College to serve as the Interim Dean. Dean Black retired in 1995 after rendering 40 years of distinguished service. Her Morris College career began in 1955 when she taught English and in 1973 she was appointed as Dean of Student Affairs. Prior to her return, she served as pastor of Reid Chapel AME Church where she retired earlier this year.

Last month, Morris College welcomed the new Pizza Hut Express that had its Grand Opening in the Givens, Blake, Rich, Thompson Student Center. This collaborative effort with Perkins Man-agement Services Company, Inc., the college's food service program providers, solidifies the company’s commitment to offering variety in food selections. The hours of operation for the Pizza Hut Express are 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mon-day through Friday and 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
