Instructors: To be determined Weeks of September 15-December 8, continuing January 19-April 13, 2015 This 24-week visual arts program introduces students to Joslyn’s collections and exhibitions with sequential art instruction in six media – drawing, painting, pottery, printmaking, sculpture, and fiber arts. Students explore each medium, while building art skills and concepts at age-appropriate levels. Joslyn Art School’s museum setting provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity for students to encounter original works of art, to experiment in related art media, and learn from a professional staff committed to providing individual challenges and guidance. Art School classes are from 4:30-6 pm. Home School classes are from 1-2:30 pm. Registration & Refunds Advance registration and full payment is required for all classes except Art Adventures. Classes are subject to minimum and maximum enrollment, so please register early. Register online at www.joslyn.org or call (402) 661-3846. Joslyn’s refund policy is as follows: 50% refund for cancellations made up to two weeks prior to the class start date; no refunds for cancellations made less than two weeks before a class begins. Materials are provided. Student Art Display The Riley Education Gallery, located near the Museum’s classrooms, features artwork by children and adults in Joslyn’s classes. Four times each year a selection of new work is displayed. Stop by to see what our students are doing! Art Class Scholarships Thanks to a special fund established by Mrs. Louise Wickstrum, the family of David S. and Bella Block, and the Joslyn Art Museum Association, financial assistance may be available for class enrollment. If a child’s or adult’s participation is dependent upon financial aid, please call (402) 661-3846. All requests will be held in confidence. Photography Joslyn will occasionally photograph students in classes for use in promotional materials, including the Museum’s website. If you do not want you or your child to be photographed, please notify Joslyn’s Criss Center for Education in writing. Wheel Thrown Ceramics Tuesdays & Thursdays: June 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26; 6-8:30 pm; Open Studio – Wednesdays, 6-8:30 pm; Glaze Session –Tuesday, July 8, 6-8:30 pm Joslyn Members: $192; General Public: $220 Use the potter’s wheel to create functional forms from hunks of moist clay in this class held at Creighton University’s ceramic studio. Tailored instruction will allow new potters to achieve success on the wheel and encourage experienced potters to explore new techniques. Open studio hours will allow you to experiment and practice at your own pace. Instructors: Robert Johnson & Andy Smith Basic Drawing Thursdays: June 5, 12, 19, 26, July 3, 10; 6-8 pm Joslyn Members: $76; General Public: $86 This class will introduce basic drawing concepts and techniques to new students and hone the skills of experienced artists. Students will explore a variety of drawing tools, including graphite and charcoal, while learning to render proportion, value, and perspective. Instructor: Julie Schram Intro to Acrylic Painting Thursdays: June 5, 12, 19, 26, July 3, 10; 6-8:30 pm Joslyn Members: $87; General Public: $97 Learn the basics of acrylic painting with instruction covering everything from color mixing to paint application. Students will complete a series of small exercise compositions while working towards a finished canvas painting. Instructor: Jaim Hackbart Basic Photography: Lauritzen Gardens Sundays: June 8, 15, 22, 29; 1-3 pm Joslyn & Lauritzen Members: $60; General Public: $70 Blooming flowers and buzzing bees are forgiving subjects when you’re learning the ins-and-outs of a camera. This class, held at Lauritzen Gardens, will teach you to utilize your camera’s functions, and the principles of design, to take your pictures to a higher level. Students need to bring a digital camera. Instructor: Jim Ferguson Wilderness Studies Wednesdays: July 2, July 9, 16, 23, 30; 6-8:30 pm at Fontenelle Forest Gallery Tour: Sunday, June 29; 1 pm at Joslyn Art Museum Joslyn & Forest Members: $88; General Public: $98 Join us as we trek the trails of Fontenelle Forest and learn to use a variety of media to capture first-hand views of the forest, wetlands, and prairie. Inspired by Thomas Moran’s visit to Yellowstone, we’ll learn to use watercolors, pastels, and charcoal while on the move in the wilderness. Instructor: Ron Sykes Altered Acrylics: Color-Scapes Saturdays: July 12, 19, 26, August 2, 9; 1-3:30 pm Joslyn Members: $83; General Public: $93 The ethereal color and painterly approach of Thomas Moran’s Yellowstone chromolithographs helped convince America to form the National Parks. We’ll use these images as inspiration as we learn to create dreamlike landscapes using alternative acrylic painting techniques that combine traditional approaches, materials from the hardware store, and other far-out ideas. Instructor: Mathew Jones Photography: A Walk in the Parks Sundays: July 13, 20, 27, August 3; 1-3 pm Joslyn Members: $55; General Public: $65 An exhibition by William Sutton’s photographs of America’s public lands will inspire us to capture images of Omaha’s public parks. We’ll begin at Joslyn for inspiration from Sutton’s images and practice some photography basics in the sculpture gardens. You’ll receive a map and the group will meet each week at a different park throughout Omaha. We’ll capture natural beauty at Hummel Park, shoot architecture and landscape design at Elmwood Park, and work with an active model at Seymour Smith Park. Instructor: Jim Ferguson Watercolor in the Gardens Mondays: July 14, 21, 28, August 4, 11; 6-8:30 pm Joslyn & Lauritzen Members: $83; General Public: $93 Stop and paint the roses in this class that will teach the watercolor basics. Instruction will combine practice in the studio and plein air experiences within the picturesque settings of Lauritzen Gardens. All classes meet at Lauritzen Gardens. Observational experiences throughout the Museum will improve your studio skills and guided instruction with a nude model will give you confidence to accurately render the figure. Instructor: Ron Sykes Landscapes: Shooting for the Canvas Thursdays: July 17, 24, 31, August 7, 14, 21; 6-8 pm; Gallery Tour - Sunday, July 13; 1 pm First class session to be held at Fontenelle Forest. Joslyn Members: $105; General Public: $115 This special class will combine basic photography instruction with an introduction to oil painting. Students will start with a camera at Fontenelle Forest, receiving instruction from both a photography and a painting professional, to frame and capture views of the woods to use later in the studio. Back at Joslyn, we’ll discuss ideas of compositional design then edit and combine elements of our photos to create idealized views of nature in a finished oil painting. Instructor: Jim Ferguson & Martie Wagner Create with Color Saturdays: June 14, 21, 28; 10-11:30 am Some artists see the world through rose tinted glasses, others feel a bit more blue. In this class your young artist will learn to mix paint, create pattern, and colorfully express themselves with their palette choices. Students will use wood, wire, and more to create sculptures like those they see in the gardens and galleries. Instructor: CaSandra Johnson Earth’s Beauty Saturdays: August 9, 16, 23; 10-11:30 am This class will celebrate the earth’s beauty as we learn painting basics, create prints, and build a work of sculpture. We’ll look to artists in the gallery that use their art to remind us of the beauty all around us. Instructor: CaSandra Johnson Draw Like a Pro Saturdays: June 7, 14, 21, 28; 10 am-noon There’s more to drawing than just pencil and paper. Learn to draw like a professional in this class that will introduce you to new drawing materials, tools, and techniques. Instructor: To be determined Sculpture: In the Balance Saturdays: July 12, 19, 26, August 2; 10 am-noon Sculptors like Mark di Suvero know the right way to keep their works of sculpture balanced so they don’t crash to the ground. Learn to control gravity in this class as you make free- standing artworks using a variety of materials and techniques. Instructor: Pamela Hinson Canvas Painting: Nature Calls Saturdays: August 16, 23, 30, September 7; 10 am-noon Answer nature’s call in this class that will explore the artistic wilderness of landscape painting and the powerful effect art can have on the way humans treat the earth. We will learn basic acrylic painting techniques while creating scenes of beauty inspired by Thomas Moran’s views of Yellowstone. Campers will learn to use a brush and how to mix colors and they’ll look to artists in the galleries to see how to experiment with unlikely techniques like dripping and pouring paint in new and exciting ways.

Nature in ArtJune 23-26; 9-11:30 amArt can transport us to the top of a mountain or to the edge of a crashing sea. In this camp we will look at how artists use their work to celebrate the beauty of nature. Campers will create paintings, sculptures, and prints as they learn about the world’s diverse ecosystems and terrains.

The Art of Theater DesignAges 9-14: June 2-6; 9 am-4 pmJoslyn & Rose Members: $185; General Public: $210

Spend mornings at The Rose and walk to Joslyn for afternoons of exploring the exciting world of theatrical design! Discover what it takes to make scenery, costumes, props, lighting, and sound for productions. Meet professional designers and technicians and create lots of hands-on theatrical scenery and props to be used in an upcoming Rose production!

Get to know your good ol’ pal Joslyn a little bit better in this camp that will introduce you to some of our favorite artworks and even some of the people who work so hard to make the Museum special. We’ll visit the galleries to see the greatest hits of the collection and make paintings, sculptures, prints and more in the studio. Throughout the week, special guests will stop by to tell us about their jobs in the Museum and we will even get a few peaks behind-the-scenes.

A Brush with Nature(A) Ages 6-8: June 9-13; 9 am-4 pm*

(B) Ages 9-12: June 23-27; 9 am-4 pm* Joslyn & Lauritzen Gardens Members: $185; General Public: $199

Spend time at Joslyn and Lauritzen Gardens in this camp that will explore artists’ love of nature. We’ll trek Lauritzen’s many gardens to learn about plants, animals, and bugs and we’ll sketch what we discover. Visits to Joslyn’s galleries will introduce us to artists like Thomas Moran and Claude Monet who risked bug bites and sunburns in order to paint the perfect sunset or blossoming flower. *Days 1, 3 and 5, campers must be dropped off and picked up at Lauritzen Gardens. Days 2 and 4, campers must be dropped off and picked up at the Joslyn Art Museum. Children will have lunch prepared by the Café. This camp will teach you how artists weave, knot, and decorate fabric to create art to wear and use. In the studio, we’ll create textiles of our own. You will learn to create batik designs, how to dye cloth, and print images to create fashionable objects and clothing. For some projects, students will be encouraged to bring old shirts from home to be altered.

If you’re going to make art, why not do it with style! This camp will teach you about many popular approaches to art throughout history and encourage you to create with a style all your own. We’ll get started by making paintings, prints, and sculptures patterned after the masters in the galleries and by the end of the week you will debut your original style to the world.

Doodles are great. We all love doodles, but this class will teach you to do even more with your pencil or pen. Spend a week in this camp learning to use a variety of drawing tools to draw like an artist. We’ll combine serious studies (like drawing a model) with games and fun exercises (like drawing on bananas) to teach you to draw what you see.

Often it’s the modern or contemporary artworks in a museum that make you wonder, “is this really art?!” Trips to the galleries and art-making experiences will help us figure out what artists are thinking when they get all abstract and conceptual to create paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture that makes people think.

Nothing’s quite as beautiful as the sunset over the horizon…but we can try! In this camp we’ll learn to capture the beauty of nature through art. You’ll explore a variety of painting, drawing, and printmaking techniques to replicate the wondrous colors, shapes, and textures of plants, rocks, water, and sky.

Creating sculpture can be a balancing act! We’ll use an exhibit of sketches, models, and sculptures by Mark di Suvero to gain insight to how an idea grows into a work of sculpture. Find out for yourself by learning to use a variety of materials to transform your sketches into freestanding sculptures.

The subject of an artwork is what the artist is showing us. In this camp we’ll learn about some of the most popular subjects throughout art history by visiting the galleries to find still lifes, figures, portraits, narratives, and landscapes. In the studio, we’ll create artworks that tell amazing stories, show views of faraway lands, and pictures of very special people.

Printmaking is a hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves kind of art-making that allows you to replicate artistic images again and again. We will learn to print using a variety of techniques and create posters, greeting cards, book bags, and more.

Not all artists are confined to an easel in a studio. Many artists make their art while exploring the wilderness. Take a look at a special exhibtion of colorful views of Yellowstone for inspiration, then pack your bag and explore! Campers will document their journey in sketchbooks and field paintings created throughout the Museum, galleries, and gardens and use their studies to create finished masterpieces in the studio.

This camp will focus on making images with the printing press. You will learn to incise lines onto a printing plate in order to create a dry point edition, create one-of-a-kind monoprints, and experiment with combining the two techniques.

Sticker design, zine publication, and skate decks are ways to take art out of the gallery and into the real world. This camp will apply art-making techniques and principles to outlets that reach people beyond the traditional art audience.

TEEN CAMPS: CRE ATE ON CAMPUSTeen camps are held at Creighton University’s Lied Education Center for the Arts (2500 California Plz., just up the street from Joslyn) and will give you a taste of the college studio experience. Each camp includes a visit to Joslyn’s galleries. Optional Wednesday Lunch & Stroll: On Wednesdays at 11:30 am, bring a sack lunch, or money to buy lunch at Java Jay. We’ll chat about how you might pursue art after high school – during college or in a career - and take a walk around campus.

CAMPS AGES 6-12 Half-day Camps (Monday-Friday) – Joslyn Members: $75 per camp; General Public: $90 per camp

Snacks provided. Campers attending a full-day camp, or pairing morning and afternoon camps in the same week, should bring a lunch and drink and join the supervised Lunch Bunch, from noon-1 pm.
